Hangman Adam Page: Bullet Club member, former tag team partner of Kenny Omega, and super lonely guy? In our most cowboy shit episode yet, Headmaster Michael (he/him) and Homecoming King Samee (they/them) chug a bunch of beers and cheers Hangman Adam Page's road to becoming AEW World Champion (2019-2021).  The long-form storytelling between Hangman, The Young Bucks, and Kenny Omega was incredibly compelling and effective, both in-ring and in promos.  Audiences found an unlikely babyface in the anxious millennial cowboy, which begs the question: do babyfaces need to lose more than win? You can contact me here: rick@theoutdoorbizpodcast.com Show Notes   00:02:27 - 00:02:58 How did you get into duck hunting? Josh got into duck hunting through his interest in the Texas Waterfowl Brigade. 00:03:44 - 00:04:06 Do you do any other kinds of hunting? "I'm actually more of a pheasant hunter than a duck hunter" 00:04:27 - 00:04:55 How did you meet Jennifer? "I actually was doing an event down in a little place in North Dakota called Washburn and we went to a DU banquet and I was selling a puppy because we still had a couple of them. I saw an advertisement saying, "join us trip down to Texas". And I thought that was really fun. So I emailed her and that's how it started." 00:05:17 - 00:05:42 What exactly is the North Dakota Waterfowl Brigade? The North Dakota Waterfowl Brigade is a program developed based on the Texas Waterfowl Brigade model. It focuses on educating kids about waterfowl, habitat management, leadership, and teamwork through a five-day camp. 00:09:23 - 00:10:21 Why did you choose the Texas Waterfowl Brigade model? Josh was drawn to the Texas Brigade model because of its seamless setup, emphasis on hands-on learning, incorporation of leadership activities, and the successful engagement of kids in outdoor activities. 00:12:45 - 00:13:26 Which program are you modeling from the Texas Waterfowl Brigade? They are specifically modeling the Waterfowl Brigade from the Texas Brigades' camp program. How are you using that program to develop your program? We're adapting the Texas Waterfowl Brigade model but with a different curriculum focusing on the breeding grounds in North Dakota instead of habitat management for wintering ducks in Texas. 00:14:09 - 00:14:15 When will you launch the program? The North Dakota Waterfowl Brigade program is set to run for five days, scheduled from June 3rd to June 7th, 2024, during the summer. Is everyone excited about it? Yes, there is a level of excitement surrounding the program, but some individuals are also a bit hesitant or cautious about the new endeavor. 00:21:27 - 00:22:02 Are there any hunting trips in your future? Josh mentions potential hunting trips to Red Lodge, Montana, for Rough Grouse and to Ohio for deer hunting with his father's friends. 00:22:30 - 00:23:11 Do you have any suggestions and/or advice for folks looking to get into duck hunting? Josh recommends finding someone experienced to teach you, emphasizing the importance of learning from others, even if the hunt isn't successful. He also suggests that hunting with a group can make the experience more enjoyable. Jensifer's advice is: that in North Dakota, we have organizations that host different Types of hunts. Like, I know our pheasants forever. Like, they're they do a youth hunt, and then our the North Dakota game and fish, Excuse me. The North Dakota Game and Fish, we have there's a they have an r three coordinator who also coordinates some Hunting around waterfowl and things like that, so they're almost like mentored hunts. What is your favorite outdoor gear purchase under $100? 00:25:35 - 00:25:57 Josh mentions a good dog brush with dual sides for detangling dog hair, particularly helpful after hunting trips when dogs often get tangled in cockleburs. 00:26:27 - 00:26:32 Jennifer says you've got to have a good headlamp. How about some of your favorite books? 00:26:41 - 00:27:15 Josh talks about "The Lonesome Cowboy with Friends," a book given to him by an author he met at a camp. 00:27:56 - 00:28:02 Jennifer discusses "Devolution" by Max Brooks, a Bigfoot-themed book that combines fiction with survival advice. Is there anything else you'd like to say or ask of our listeners? Jennifer promotes fundraising efforts for the North Dakota Waterfowl Brigade through Ducks Unlimited, encouraging support for their camp on February 8th, 2024, during Giving Hearts Day. Josh advises people to spend time outdoors and disconnect from screens. Where can people find you if they'd like to follow up (email, Twitter, Instagram, etc)? What a Creep
The origin story of "Stockholm Syndrome" & NON-Creep Jaycee Lee Dugard

What a Creep

What a CreepSeason 19, Episode 5“Stockholm Syndrome”Real diagnosis or just sexist trash? On Thursday, August 23, 1973, a convicted felon Jan-Erik Olsson entered the Kreditbanken Bank in Stockholm, Sweden (technically Norrmalmstrong); he was wearing a wig, painted his eyebrows black, pulled out a submachine gun, and yelled in English with an American accent “the party has begun!” He fired several shots into the ceiling, announced this was a robbery, and ordered people to the ground. A silent alarm alerted the police, and two officers showed up (one of them unarmed.) Ollson shot one of the officers in his hand while the other was ordered to sit in a chair and sing “Lonesome Cowboy” while taking four hostages into a vault. Six days later, the entire group, including convicted criminal Clark Olofsson, came out of the bank sacred, dehydrated, and in fear for their lives. They were all scared of the cops, and the kidnap victims had so much sympathy they hugged the captors before being taken to the hospital. All refused to testify against their kidnappers and said they felt more terrified of being harmed by the police than the criminals who held them for days at gunpoint. The term “Stockholm Syndrome” or, more accurately, Norrmalmstrong Syndrome” was created by Nils Bejerot (a criminologist and psychiatrist), who theorized that victims come to love their kidnappers as a coping mechanism. This would also be the basis of other labels that pathologize and often discredit victims, like trauma bonding (or TROW-MAh, according to Jamie Lee Curtis), battered wife syndrome, and why women seem to pick abusive men. Over the years, the bank heist and kidnapping situation has been revisited and revised to show a complete picture of what happened in these six days and why Stockholm Syndrome might be a false theory. In short, it's a creepy diagnosis meant to show women how weak they are under pressure. We think it is bullshit. Musician, actor, songwriter, producer and past TCBCast guest Jamie Kelley returns with Elvis collector & expert John Michael Heath, the co-host of their new YouTube video series EAP Society, to sit down with Justin to talk all about what they've been up to in the past couple years, their history as collectors, and then get down into the nitty gritty behind the classic 1957 film starring Elvis Presley himself, "Loving You." But first - we take a "Detour" to analyze the original short story it was based on, Mary Agnes Thompson's "A Call From Mitch Miller," first published in a June 1956 issue of Good Housekeeping magazine, then dive headlong into the cinematic tale of rock and roll singer Deke Rivers, who comes up through the country and western field with the help of an exploitative manager, only to explode into mass popularity that sets off a firestorm of controversy among those who say his music corrupts youth and... hey, wait a minute... something about this seems oddly familiar?  As we discuss the soundtrack, Justin also begin laying down the rails for a story that runs parallel to the making of Loving You and connects thematically with the movie and will be concluded on the next episode, along with Songs of the Week! [02:16:16] The Cure- Just Like Heaven “Where words fail, music speaks.” There's no such thing as a perfect story.  I've been trying to create it since the mixtape began.  It's what keeps me creating.  A blank TDK cassette tape was my canvas.  Records were my tool.  Some of you were my inspiration.  My parent's got me my first duel turntables for Christmas during junior year of high school (1985).  One had pitch control & the other not so much. Trying to beat mix was an event, but looking back on it, it was practice man (Allen Iverson 200?).  There was hope though.  A new kid just moved across the street from Panama that knew how to properly beat mix.  Tim Huggins aka The Lonesome Cowboy had the equipment for the job.  This is where I got my first taste of real beat mixing.  After countless hours of trying to mix Madonna, Tears For Fears & Soul Sonic Force together I was getting there. Us and few other fellas used to battle for spinnin' time during Youth Center dances.   While there I realized my niche' was house/freestyle music not really hip-hop.  Back then hip hop was mainly drum beats and samples.  Freestyle and House had electronic swirls, melodies, samples, and disco meets a hard hip hop breakbeat, but faster.  At times I felt like I was floating/flying. Then came my failed attempt at college.  But hey, the music was great!  In the Fall of '87 I moved into a dorm room in Eddy Hall at ENMU (the only co-ed dorm on campus- cool).  I showed up with my music. By now in my mind I was a mixtape specialist.  But who has time for that when you're out on your own for the first time? Eat. Sleep. Basketball. Party. Repeat. I lived on the 2nd floor and I remember consistently sticking my big ass speakers out the window so we'd have music to ball to and dance between games.  Every pickup game was a dance party. I landed a couple of gigs for some frats for free.  Hell, I DJ'd at a damn football stadium for a football game.  What a time to be alive!  I just loved DJing and discovering what I could do with all this music I had. I must give credit to music for all the people I met.  I was social, but not as much as music helped me.   By Fall '88 all that music, mixtape business and partying led me to one of the best decisions of my life. I joined the Air Force. My first assignment was Keesler AFB, Mississippi.  Once again I found myself on the 2nd floor of the dorms.  I was making mixtapes for late night work shifts, room parties & car rides.  We all used to go Fiesta or Take Two nightclubs on the beach.  I wasn't just there to dance, but I was checking out what the DJ's were playing and then going to the record store the next payday and picking up those tracks. I probably drove the DJs crazy asking for the name of the track they were playing. This also included a bunch of people loading into a car go to New Orleans almost every payday weekend and heading to The Blue Crystal- an industrial, goth, alternative club.  We'd wear all black and do a million stupid things in the streets of New Orleans or go to the nightclub in Jax Brewery. Dancing until 4 & 5 in the morning. I was always so curious about what the DJ was gonna play in a big city.  So many discoveries in those joints.  Just trying to expand my musical taste and what would make the perfect mix. Since then, I learned tempo & keys by ear of all this stuff I was listening to. There was so much more to making a mixtape. This mix has been put off for years.  It's truly hard to capture a snapshot of not just my life but those around you during our huge transition(s). I don't like letting people down, so that fear of failure put this “mixtape” off for years.  This mix isn't just about me but for the people that lived it. It incorporates the people I met during those times before I was a club DJ (it took me took til 1997 after giving up around 1993).  I hope it takes you back. As with every mix I hope it tells a story. Music does most of my talking.  It's not perfect, but is anything.  Enjoy…

Lonesome Cowboy Dave is back in the house! We recorded a phone-in to Tarzan's Radio Station at Fossil House on Stang Ranch in Stangsville, Texas on 2021-08-09, and none of us had died yet... although according to the news, the world might end before you get a chance to hear this show all the way to the end. But, what better way to spend your time just before the atmosphere either freezes entirely, or boils away? (... Depending on your location.) Three classic songs by Dave and ESO are included, plus live versions of two of them at the end! Good luck living through the Weather Apocalypse that long. (Note: Apologies to Larry Blamire for the title. Correction: The movie GASLIGHT is actually from 1944.) http://subgenius.com

Early one was encouraged by his mentor director, John Huston, to work behind the camera. He was introduced to Mr. Huston via the star of LIFE AND TIMES OF JUDGE ROY BEAN, PaulNewman. Mark was a young boy at that point in his career and soon decided this was the work for him. Mark continued working on such films as McLINTOCK! with John Wayne, MONTE WALSH with his friend Lee Marvin and countless other movies. Mark even got the pleasure and honor of working with Frank Sinatra on DIRTY DINGUS MAGEE and Andy Warhol on LONESOME COWBOY. Since Leaving Arizona for the goldfields of California, he has had a stellar career as producer and line producer, being privileged to produce such films as STAND-INS and Visioneer. While Mark's experience blends the creative and technical aspects of filmmaking, his true genius lies in the behind-the-scenes nuts and bolts aspects of movie production that are key to making any successful film.

It was July 4 at 22X-Day Drill, and by the fourth hour of live blabbershow, Dr. Drummond and even Dr. Hal had pooped out -- but Rev. Ivan Stang and Princess Wei had returned, re-energized. This thus sounds very much like a Stang Ranch or Cleveland show with Dave calling in, except that instead of Dave on the phone we had on stage our erstwhile Cleveland Heights neighbor, IDRMRSR, aka Mister Sister, one of the few official Church conservatives. He had been tippling a bit. (We managed to slide a little Lonesome Cowboy in the mix too.) Also represented are Rev. Watt deFalk, and music by Rev. Angry Larry with mystery accompanist X recorded live at 22X-Day Drill -- complete with loud boorish drunks talking over it. Also: The Rudy Schwartz Project; The Skeletons (Psycho); and Dewey Cox (two songs from "Walk Hard"). LeMur's cutting-up spices everything, and Mr. F. LeMur is actually discussed as a person by the only one of us who has actually met him!

We managed to get through this (probably) last truly live broadcast from WCSB without crying or even getting sappy like we did a couple of shows back. At first there's a new Liberty Tubes song, an amazing rock-n-roll mash-up by Dido (?), and ten minutes of a funny 2017 X-Day podcrust with Revs. Shoggoth, Peas and Eggplant. Then Dr. Sinister joins StangDoe and the Lonesome Cowboy for, after twenty years, one final bout of live jibber-jabber using WCSB's excellent microphones, headphones, and phone-caller audio. (Our home studio at Stang Ranch is a bit less professionally appointed.) There are some thank-yous, some reminiscing about the more freakish frequent WCSB callers, some secrets revealed, the usual sudden tangents into twisted versions of current events, science, and ancient history, killer clowns, momos, and some philosophizing from Stang regarding his recent indignities of aging and how they've slowed the final epic move of sacred SubGenius crap from Cleveland to the secure rural Texas compound (an hour from Waco! Heh!). The show ends with a recording of "SubGenius Lullaby" from Chas Smith's old ESO show on the station, which is probably a real tear-jerker for long-time listeners.

This is one HELL of a rerun, since much of it takes place in Hell. Much of it comes from a rip-roaring live ESO Swamp Radio show of the year 2000 or so, and it's a wonderful example of the days when Prof. Chas Smith was still alive and producing amazing improv shows. He, Rev. Stang, Princess Wei  and the Lonesome Cowboy were particularly inspired on this one, and it's hard to believe none of it was scripted. We sure were FASTER back in those days... There's a subplot involving murder on the high seas, but the main story is the ongoing infinities of torture meted out to, first, Dave, and then poor Stang. One of our very favorite oldies! All the insane-sounding collages of "Bob" Dobbs bulldada come from the great Fernandinande LeMur. Some ranting about the War on God is by Stang and Einstein's Secret Orchestra in the Pufferdome at Starwood Festival of 2000. A Puzzling Evidence clip with Dr. Hal talking about the hot link of X-Day is even older, the 1980s, and we hear Nenslo's great song "There's a Feller Down in Texas", recorded at a big devival either in Portland or Seattle, in the 1990s.

This one's a Radio Synaesthesia show without Dr. Sinister, with Stang at the controls, Princess Wei and Dr. Hal (with yet another new song!) in the studio, and the Lonesome Cowboy on the phone, recorded July 9 "2017." Many Church secrets are revealed including the history of SubGenius transgender weddings. Pretty much everything important is discussed, followed by discussions of everything else. Hopefully we will have Tarzan's Radio Station fully cranked up next week.   Order Lonesome Cowboy Dave's novel NEIGHBOR WORLD and/or THE BOOK OF THE SUBGENUS (signed): http://www.subgenius.com/scatalog/books.htm

Live 2017-08-27 Music includes very old (The Monkees, Glassmadness, Dr. G. Gordon Gordon and Drs. for Extreme Prejudice) and very new (Dr. Faux and the Right Angles, Xposed 4Heads, and two songs from a 2014 album by The Rainmakers that was new to us but uncannily timely. Then it gets talky, with a discussion about the Western Jackelope from Stang Ranch followed by some Thorazine Urine Podcrust from 20X-Day (Peas, Faux, Shoggoth in this case), and finally the Lonesome Cowboy calls the station. Dave's centrifuge of spittle versus The Elite. Who ARE the Elite? Fox News being the most mainstream and elite. Dave's slippery, soapy problems with connective tissue of the topic of discussion. The Air Force can induce a near-death OOB experience just by putting pilots in a centrifuge! Neighborworld is about to be on sale! The Salton Sea and the SubGenius in Mexicali or Calexico. Dave's cousin Fornicato. Dave's novel Neighborworld about to be published; excerpt. A mouse gnaws on Dave's phone line. Stang's job and the SubGenius documentary. Hurricane Harvey versus Obama's flood regulations (removed by Trump 2 weeks prior). Crazy greed-mongerers like "Bob." Wei's new word: EXTEMPORADIO. Podcrust of 20X-Day. The Texas studio, where gravity is higher.

Some shocking and controversial subject6s are covered in depth, such as Dave's new novel NEIGHBORWORLD being published by the new SubGenius Foundation press; Stang's theories about the Russian hackers' "BBC-BBW" Internet porno propaganda intrusions exacerbating racism; The Easter Snake; ruins of Atlantis found all over Stang Ranch; children and the Illuminati; taxes and chiggers, how they interact; the beehive next to our faces; and the exact uses of The Acid Bath.

After being psychologically knocked for a loop, we are back with ten times as many screaming heads as they tried to cut off! We had a lot of fun assembling this episode, which is actually scripted, in a funny way; it helped us to get over THE HORROR and to move on with THE BATTLE in order to win THE JOKE. For the first half hour we copped (and recut) a lot of uncredited collage work from The Puzzling Evidence Show of the previous week (election week), then called up The Lonesome Cowboy and climbed back into the saddle for another bout in the ring. (Is it possible that a boxing ring is the wrong place for a horse race? WHO CARES? Why not both?) We also copped some good lines from those tricky Scrubgenius forum posters. The Swinging Love Corpses close out this heartfelt show with their prescient song, "We Are Going to Save the Universe."

First up are some good samples from 19X-Day: two memorable new songs by St. Andrew the Impaled and Rev. Amy MmHmm, and two new improvised rants by Revs. Faux and Stang with guitar god backing (Lord Angry Larry and Lord Rock God). We also have a DEVO cover that Rev. Bleepo Abernathy had something to do with. Captain Ahab (Gregory Peck) spouts off about that darn old whale, or maybe "Bob." And Rev. Jimmy Ryan rawks. But the focus of the live talk part of the show are two songs from an ancient 45 rpm record by The Chronics, a punk band of some reknown from the late 1970s that featured our favorite lonesome cowboy, Dave, when he was a tiny little youth. Dave instructs us about The Chronics and reveals yet more secrets about his surreal life among the corruptigating worms.

But this show has the Lonesome Cowboy! -- and lots of music too: Xposed 4Heads, The Fantastic Plastics, O.O.B. Experience, Doktors 4 Extreme Prejudice. Discussions cover The Age of Stupid, current events, undercurrents, currants, the elections, and how to repeat, quip your jab and Slock on. Back in 1994, Hour of Slack came from Dallas, but we used a lot of material recorded whenever Rev. Stang visited Cleveland and sat in on the late Chas Smith's show, "ESO Radio/Brain Rot Theater" on WCSB. One of the best chunks of one of the best of those shows, "Lonesome Cowboy Dave in Space," comprises the majority of this. Many listeners thought it was SCRIPTED! What was scripted however was the intro to the show, detailing the truly dire deadlines and circumstances of The SubGenius Foundation at that time. Chas Smith still had his life, and his original band, and you hear them playing along musically with wherever Stang and Lonesome Cowboy Dave go -- which was primarily to Hell and back. Dr. Hal, Rev. Stang, the Lonesome Cowboy, and a mess of callers continue as guests on the second part of Dr. Sinister's Radio Synaesthesia from June 28, just before 18X-Day. The list of subject matters covered (on the text log at subgenius.com) is a couple of pages long, but as you might guess, both dinosaurs and low budget old sci fi movies are covered, along with eternal verities, inspirational real-life anecdotes, and a lot of smart-assery. The Paleo Diet and flying saucer sightings also get the treatment. And Rev. Ivan Stang once again reverts to his alter ego, the shriekingly angry teabucker redneck Yahoo-commenter inside him.

At first it's a fairly "normal" show (by Hour of Slack standards anyway). Then, seemingly out of desperation, Stang starts reading ONAN CANOBITE'S DECEMBER 2014 SERMON. For 20 minutes, the show alternates between Stang reading chunks of the great ONAN SERMON and Dave doing his patented surrealist extemporaneizing -- altogether, an excellent combo of clever writing and pure Spouting. At the climax, the worst "Bob" song in the world is played! We apologize for NOTHING!

"When the legend becomes fact, print the legend!" The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance Monument Valley, Lonesome Cowboy, Wild West!

We're posting this early because the world ends next week, and we don't want to have to stop right in the middle of the Apocolypse just to mess with distributing this show.  This 2003 episode was one listener's intro to the Church of the SubGenius, and he recently drew our attention to it because he was looking for a copy. We're glad he did because neither the war nor X-Day have changed much, and our 2003 description  remains almost valid: "This is The Greatest Hour of Slack Ever. I know I often say that, but this time it's true for sure. The live ESO shows of the last 3 weeks have been WAR TALK and X-Day Hankerin'. The best in those veins that wasn't TOTALLY stupid, yet was still gut-blowingly hilarious - yet horrifying, considering the subject matter - those clips went into this one. Also, Mister F. Le Mur cranked out noise like he previously cranked out art. I guess Le Mur is now the Slack man's Terry Gilliam to the Slack man's Monty Python, in that he does a lot of the show, yet he's never heard. This show furthermore contains an Artemia Salina chop-up which should get lots of future replay as it's copied and bounced around audio sarcasm collectors. And, the newly Hour of Slacked Hank Flloyd and the Swerving Headlights presents yet ANOTHER great alien abduction C&W ballad." The live parts were recorded at WCSB, Cleveland, for the late Chas Smith's show ESO Swamp Radio. Chas is heard along with Lonesome Cowboy dave, Preincess Wei R. Doe and Rev. Stang.

This episode starts with a colossal Connie collage by Rev. Susie the Floozie, done back in the old days before people got so suspicious of Mrs. Dobbs. That's 20 minutes of song and dance, and a little killing. The show ends with the end of Susie's "Bob"/Connie show. In between, Stang, Doe & Dave the Lonesome Cowboy go at it. The word "tattoon" is coined. The Koch Brothers and Africanized Killer Deer are discussed, but not together. Dave recounts his punk rock years. We prove that the Duck Dynasty guys are Muslims. This, to me (Stang), is a better than usual Hour of Slack, because I as show host was lucky enough to have both Dr. Hal and Lonesome Cowboy Dave in the studio at WCSB -- and, halfway through the show, Dr. Sinister. You cannot get much more pure audio Slack than that -- unless you also have Dr. G. Gordon Gordon, who emailed us a topical (!) short rant about the Batman Movie Massacre, inserted near the beginning. (Technically, Dave was phoning in, but since he's generally the only person ALLOWED to phone in, he might as well have been in the studio.) The conversation between the Doktors of the Air ranges from 15X-day, which had ended earlier that very day, to DAMNED NEAR EVERYTHING ELSE, such as, for instance, Fleischer cartoons and how the "human blockhead" sideshow act is done. Both Dr. Hal and Dave turn in STERLING performances. We still have almost 3 more hours with these worthies from Dr. Sinister's show, and our hope for upcoming episodes is to intercut that material with the location X-Day recordings of rants, music and "radio shows" -- a truly daunting editing task, the thought of which makes me (to quote Little Big Man) "shrivel like a spider on a hot stove."
