Heroic Purgatory: An Asian Cinema Podcast

In this episode of Heroic Purgatory we put on our wuxia hats and EastmanColor glasses for King Hu's 1967 iconic piece, Dragon Inn. It is a film of many influences coalesced into a Ming dynasty tale of brave warriors standing up to an evil eunuch's army, with beautiful action pieces and big emotional swings. We discuss how the film holds up today and how it compares with the more recent Tsui Hark produce New Dragon Gate Inn (1992). We hope you enjoy our discussion. For our first live episode - recorded at the wonderful Depot Cinema in Lewes, UK - we welcome back the actor and martial artist Katrina Durden, who first appeared on Episode 12 of the podcast back in 2017. From her work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 'Doctor Strange' (2016) and Joey Ansah's fantastic 'Street Fighter' web series, to roles in TV's 'Strike Back', 'Heads of State' starring Idris Elba and John Cena, and the upcoming 'Red Sonja' reboot, Katrina has been kicking-ass in action movies for over a decade. In this special live episode, podcast host Ben Johnson is joined by friend of the show and author of 'Life of Action', Mike Fury, to discuss Katrina's journey from London to Hollywood, her inspirations both on-screen and off, and her experiences working in action movies. This conversation took place after a rare screening of the 1967 Taiwanese wuxia classic, 'Dragon Inn', directed by Chinese auteur King Hu, showing as part of the BFI's Art of Action season. Ben, Katrina and Mike discuss why the film is so important in the history of martial arts and 'wuxia' cinema, and how it continues to inspire generations of filmmakers. This conversation took place on 7 November 2024 and is the first of four live shows recorded as part of the BFI's Art of Action season, organised in association with the Independent Cinema Office and Film Hub South East. A huge thank you to everyone who came along to the show and the wonderful staff at the Depot Cinema in Lewes.LINKSKatrina Durden on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/katrinadurden/Katrina Durden on Kung Fu Movie Guide Podcast, Episode 12: http://kungfumovieguide.com/kfmg-podcast-s02-episode-12-yolanda-lynes-david-cheung-katrina-durden/Katrina Durden profile on Kung Fu Movie Guide: http://kungfumovieguide.com/profile-katrina-durden/Mike Fury on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/themikefury/Mike Fury's website: https://www.mikefury.net/'Dragon Inn' review on Kung Fu Movie Guide: http://kungfumovieguide.com/dragon-gate-inn/King Hu profile on Kung Fu Movie Guide: http://kungfumovieguide.com/profile-king-hu/'Dragon Inn' trailer, courtesy of Eureka Entertainment: https://youtu.be/ySSUsV_qGS8Buy 'Dragon Inn' on Blu-ray: https://eurekavideo.co.uk/movie/dragon-inn/Visit the Depot Cinema in Lewes: https://lewesdepot.org/Learn more about the BFI's Art of Action season: https://www.bfi.org.uk/art-actionA huge thank you to Independent Cinema Office (https://www.independentcinemaoffice.org.uk/) and Film Hub South East (https://www.independentcinemaoffice.org.uk/film-hub-south-east/) Hosted on Acast. Zero and Wiz RECOMMEND A Touch of Zen Technically, A Touch of Zen is a surprisingly ageless, gorgeous film. Both Zero and Wiz were impressed by the visuals of the film, from the cinematography featuring the natural landscapes and the towns all the way to the editing of the fight scenes. The film feels surprisingly modern: maybe it was the remastering of the film we watched on Criterion Channel, but the film feels more like something that could have been made in the 80s/90s that an early 70s. They also both enjoyed the story, but for different reasons: Zero liked the political machinations that were on display as well as the references to Buddhism that pepper the film. Wiz just thought it was a fun, enjoyable epic action film that reminded him more of The Hidden Fortress in some ways. What they both feel is that the film isn't that deep, but it's still a highly enjoyable film with great fight choreography and visuals.

https://notesonfilm1.com/2024/01/28/thinking-aloud-about-film-four-moods-taiwan-1970/ We continue our discussion of the GOLDEN DECADES: CINEMATIC MASTERS OF THE GOLDEN HORSE AWARDS, with a chat on Four Moods, a portmanteau film, originally conceived as a project to raise funds for Li Han-hsiang's ailing film company, Grand Motion Picture Company in Taiwan, The four short films that together compose FOUR MOODS are: First, Joy, is directed by Pai Ching-Jui, a bold beginning, shot as a silent film, with diegetic music but no dialogue The second is King Hu's Anger, which no doubt King Hu's fans will rejoice at. Sadness, the third, is directed by “godfather of Taiwanese cinema” Li Hsing, is perhaps misnamed as it's perhaps more about self-destructive anger and vengefulness than anything else. Happiness, the last, and our favourite, is directed by Li Han-Hsiang himself All involve ghosts, hauntings, and desires. A historically and culturally significant film, featuring four of the most popular and significant directors of the time. Fabulistic and allegorical, yet, the length of the podcast testifies to the limits of our understanding. The frustration of watching these films is the bounds of one's knowledge, and we would encourage listeners who want to know more to read these excellent articles by Andrew Heskins and Hayley Scallion. The copy kindly made available for viewing is brown and a bit murky colour-wise and does not deserve to be publicised as a restoration. The sub-titling, particularly of text within the narrative, could be improved. That said, w're very glad to see it.

King Hu - geniusz, perfekcjonista, mistrz kina światowego.

Episode 83 (Chang Cheh: Grandmaster) Alec and Derek begin a journey through the career of one of the undisputed masters of action films and one of the greatest directors of the famous Shaw Brothers Studio, Chang Cheh. Beginning with the film that started it all 1967s The One-Armed Swordsman. Following the success of King Hu’s Wuxia classic Come Drink with Me, and taking influence from Rebel Without A Cause, Cheh and star (Jimmy) Wang Yu present a brooding teenaged swordfighter who’s coming of age is complicated by the need to kill a horde of trained killers while defending the very people who cut off his arm. With its vivid color palate and displays of graphic violence, The Shaw Brothers had their first million dollar smash hit, lighting the fuse for the Kung Fu craze of the 1970’s, ensuring Hong Kong cinemas would never be the same. Only four years later Cheh would reboot the idea with The New One-Armed Swordsman this time with stars David Chiang and Ti Lung (more about them later) and would amplify the melodrama and violence to dizzying heights creating a film even more memorable (and homoerotic) than its beloved predecessor. All of the films we will be discussing in this series are currently streaming on Amazon Prime and we encourage our listeners to watch along and share their thoughts!Three ways to support this podcast:1. Check below for information on how to enter. But before that, Dylan and Chris discuss Jason Bourne, the new film from Paul Greengrass starring Matt Damon, Tommy Lee Jones, Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel, and Julia Stiles. After a long break and an attempt to pass the franchise off to Jeremy Renner, Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass are back to the series that made shakey-cam into a staple of action filmmaking and turned Matt Damon into a badass. Dylan also saw Nerve, the new film starring Dave Franco and Emma Roberts that critics have been clamoring over, and Dragon Inn from director King Hu. There's some news regarding whitewashing in The Great Wall, and the blu-ray releases of the week (find Dylan's recap of them here). But more importantly, we've got a Bourne Collection to giveaway. Open to residents of North America only, if you answer the following skill-testing question regarding the Bourne franchise, you'll be entered for digital copies of The Bourne Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum and Legacy. These are iTunes/UltraViolet copies. Question: What is Jason Bourne's real name? Email your answer to christopher.cross@bagogames.com before August 8th, Noon (12 PM) EST. Carlos Rojas‘s new book is a wonderfully transdisciplinary exploration of discourses of sickness and disease in Chinese literature and cinema in the long twentieth century. As its title indicates, Homesickness: Culture, Contagion, and National Transformation in Modern China (Harvard University Press, 2015) focuses particularly on what Rojas calls “homesickness,” a condition wherein “a node of alterity is structurally expelled from an individual or collective body in order to symbolically reaffirm the perceived coherence of that same body.” (vii) Sickness and disease, here, are not just signs of weakness and instability, but are also potential sources of dynamic transformation. In three major parts of the book set in three years – 1906, 1967, and 2006 – Rojas places immunology, biomedicine, literature, and film into a conversation that spans the work of Richard Dawkins; writers Liu E, Ng Kim Chew, Zeng Pu, Jin Tianhe, Lu Xun, Hu Fayun, Yan Lianke, and Yu Ha; immunologist Élie Metchnikoff; and directors King Hu, Tsai Ming-liang, and Jia Zhangke (among many others). In each case, Homesickness contextualizes literary work within a broader historical context that allows readers to understand the relationships between contemporary tropes – or memes – of Self and Other as they manifest in concerns about healthy and sick bodies at many different scales. It’s well worth reading for those interested in Chinese literature or film, the history and literature of biomedicine, and/or the ways that discourses of immunology and modernity have mutually shaped one another.
