Len and Kyle discuss eradicating complacency in HR, management, and leadership positions, how HR teams can remain vigilant against competition and keep top talent in the face of the Great Resignation, and how better employee advocacy can encourage a more engaged team. It's not surprising that the more success and power one cultivates, the greater their chance of becoming overconfident and complacent. Author Len Herstein, who has led branding teams for huge companies such as Coca-Cola and Nabisco, has seen this scenario unfold all too often. He wrote his new book Be Vigilant: Strategies to Stop Complacency, Improve Performance, and Safeguard Success in order to aid HR professionals and management leaders in eradicating complacency and unrest in employees before it begins. He can speak to:The Danger of Success: Why past HR successes may be setting you up for future failures, and how to avoid this common scenario in a constantly evolved workplaceQuestion Everything: A key part of being vigilant is questioning everything (even things that go right) - how to brief and debrief your way to continued successThe Metrics Trap: Why the way your reading your metrics may be encouraging overconfidence, and how to gauge your performance safelyRebel HR is a podcast for HR professionals and leaders of people who are ready to make some disruption in the world of work. We'll be discussing topics that are disruptive to the world of work and talk about new and different ways to approach solving those problems.Follow Rebel HR Podcast at:www.rebelhumanresources.comhttps://twitter.com/rebelhrguyhttps://www.facebook.com/rebelhrpodcastwww.kyleroed.comhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/kyle-roed/Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Are you successful? Do you know that success can lead to complacency? Complacency can decrease productivity, create mistakes, and impact the bottom line – it costs money. Len Herstein sits down with Kevin to discuss the dangers of complacency and why vigilance enables us to remain successful. Self-awareness is a start. When we become predictable, either personally or in our organizations, it becomes easier for a competitor to take over. We need to be strategically unpredictable and develop habits that minimize overconfidence. Key Points Len Herstein discusses complacency vs. vigilance and how we notice if we are becoming overconfident. He shares the OODA loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act). He talks about metrics and unintended consequences. Meet Len Name: Len Herstein His Story: Len is the author of Be Vigilant! Strategies to Stop Complacency, Improve Performance, and Safeguard Success. He is on a mission to empower organizations and individuals to protect the success they've worked so hard to achieve. Len has a 30+ year history in business, marketing, and entrepreneurism–working in brand marketing for Coca-Cola, The Campbell Soup Company, and Nabisco before founding Manage Camp (a business conference producer). Worth Mentioning: In 2015, Len answered a higher calling to public service when he became a Reserve Sheriff's Deputy in Douglas County, Colorado, where he works up to 850 hours a year as a state-certified peace officer on the patrol team – for free. Len quickly realized he was learning valuable lessons through his law enforcement training that applied directly back to his business. The most important lesson, and one of the very first he learned, was the concept that complacency kills, and vigilance saves This episode is brought to you by… The Daily Email, daily inspiration for leaders sent Monday-Friday every week. Now, as the author of Be Vigilant! Strategies to Stop Complacency, Improve Performance, and Safeguard Success. Your Business and Relationships Depend on It, he's on a mission to empower organizations and individuals to safeguard the success they've worked so hard to achieve.  Len has a 30+ year history in business, marketing, and entrepreneurism. Before founding ManageCamp Inc and producing 19 annual iterations of the world-acclaimed Brand ManageCamp marketing conference, Len worked in brand marketing and innovation for Coca-Cola, The Campbell Soup Company, and Nabisco.  In 2015, Len answered a higher calling to public service when he became a Reserve Sheriff's Deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office in Colorado. In this volunteer position, he works up to 850 hours a year as a State-certified peace officer on the patrol team – for free. Inspired to make a positive contribution to the safety and well-being of the citizens of Douglas County, Len works to be part of the solution of creating better relationships between police and the community.  It wasn't long before Len realized he was learning valuable lessons through his law enforcement training that could be applied directly back to his business. Now Len has developed actionable strategies to help business leaders stop complacency, improve performance, and safeguard success through vigilance. When things are going well in our agencies and our personal lives, it's easy to relax into the comfort of that success. One of the risks of that comfort is missing the signs that trouble is brewing below the surface. There's a difference between living in fear and anticipating challenges. No one is suggesting we live a life of paranoia where we're constantly waiting for things to fall apart, but a vigilant approach to life and business can help us steer clear of troubled waters before we're knee-deep in them. Author Len Herstein started as a consultant in consumer-packaged goods marketing before life took an expected turn that led to him becoming a police officer at age 45. Though these worlds seem vastly different on the surface the through-line he discovered was one about the risks and dangers of complacency. In this episode of Build a Better Agency, Len and I take a deep dive into complacency: how it's defined, the damage it can do, and why agency owners are among the most susceptible to its dangers. We discuss tangible tactics for creating awareness in your agency, the importance of transparency, and how to successfully self-assess your own complacency. It's a big conversation about an important topic meant to inspire you to be vigilant. How to Avoid Complacency in Customer Interactions  Shep Hyken interviews Len Herstein, CEO and President of ManageCamp Inc. and author of Be Vigilant!: Strategies to Stop Complacency, Improve Performance. They discuss how businesses can be vigilant against complacency by safeguarding success and customer relationships. Top Takeaways:   What breeds complacency in business? Most businesses don't realize that one of the main drivers of complacency is success. The more success we have in our customer interactions, the more we get overconfident. We become vulnerable to taking customer relationships for granted. This week on Amazing Business Radio, Len Herstein discusses why complacency is dangerous and how to avoid it. He offers the following insights and more: ·      Avoid tunnel vision. Companies can become too focused on matching their top competitors that they lose sight of new competitors or new categories that have entered the market. ·      Be a disruptor. Successful companies like Amazon and Netflix are always coming up with new ways to engage their customers. Instead of reacting to what their top competitors are doing, they are the disruptors in their industry and beyond. ·      Learn from success. Most companies debrief when a mistake happens with the idea they will avoid the same mistakes in the future. However, they often forget to look back on their successes, not realizing there are opportunities to replicate the same moving forward. (DOES THAT SOUND OKAY?) ·      Always be vigilant. The best way to fight complacency is to be aware of it. You can't protect against threats that you didn't see coming.  Quote:   "The best way to fight complacency is to be aware. The more aware you are, the more in the moment you are, the more you have that forces you to think, and the less complacent you're going to be."   About:   Len Herstein, CEO and President of ManageCamp Inc. and author of Be Vigilant!: Strategies to Stop Complacency, Improve Performance, and Safeguard Success. In this week's episode of the SIMPLE brand With Matt Lyles podcast I talk with Len Herstein, author of Be Vigilant: Strategies to Stop Complacency, Improve Performance, and Safeguard Success.Over the past couple of decades, too many businesses have continued to operate the same way for decades because "that's how we've always done things." While there are so many thought leaders and authors who are providing some fantastic lessons on how to become successful, no one is talking nearly enough about how ensure you remain successful once you do make it. And that's why I'm happy to talk with Len Herstein this week.  Len's had a long history developing, growing and managing some pretty well-known brands: Campbell's Soup, Coca-Cola, Nabisco. Today, he's the Founder, CEO & President of ManageCamp Inc., where he provides the strategic vision behind the annual Brand ManageCamp conferences, leads the planning on clients' custom events, and is the day-to-day contact and project leader for ManageCamp's brand consulting projects. And this is pretty cool - On the side, he's a volunteer sheriff's deputy in Colorado. And Len is the author of Be Vigilant: Strategies to Stop Complacency, Improve Performance, and Safeguard Success. Your Business and Relationships Depend on It. So many books and authors teach lessons on how to become successful. But Len's lessons are a little different. They focus on what to do once you're already successful. In Be Vigilant, Len teaches us how so many successful companies - and even successful leaders - can fail big time when they get complacent. And he teaches us how to best guard against complacency so we can remain successful. What's really cool here is that - in his book - Len uses cautionary tales from both businesses that have fallen but also from some of the crime and police lessons he's learned in his time as a volunteer sheriff's deputy. RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODELen's book: Be Vigilant: Strategies to Stop Complacency, Improve Performance, and Safeguard Success Len Herstein's SiteBrand ManageCamp

It's at that very moment that we need to be more attentive, more vigilant, than ever. And that's what Len Herstein writes about in his new book Be Vigilant! The strategy of simple, sensory-based reminders to enforce positive behaviors at the workplace and at home.
