Mama Bird Doula Services' mission is to improve the maternal health outcomes for Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color (BIPOC) and their babies in their community.  They believe that all birthing persons and their families should feel Safe, Seen, and Heard. Through lived experience, the founder of Mama Bird, Birdie Johnson, came to understand the importance of having complete support and information to make decisions for the best possible outcomes.  Knowing that this support and information is often missing, she made it her mission to be sure that others would have a better birth and postpartum experience than she had. Because knowledge is power, she set out to make the childbearing year better for those in her community.   Today's podcast includes the history of Mama Bird Doula Services as we visit with Felicia Hawkins, Director of Doula Program, and Emma Lemke, Director of Communications and Outreach.  Felicia is a seasoned healthcare professional and dedicated advocate for expectant mothers and Mama Bird's Doula Mentor. With 24 years of dynamic patient/client care, a doula certification, and robust nursing expertise, Felicia brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to the organization. Her alignment with Mama Bird's mission of empowering BIPOC pregnant individuals for better birth outcomes further amplifies her impact as Mama Bird's Doula Mentor.  Emma is a dedicated professional with a background in program management and volunteer coordination, driven by her fervent commitment to reproductive justice. Her unwavering commitment to reproductive justice, bodily autonomy, queer and trans liberation, and anti-racism is evident and aligns with Mama Bird's mission of increasing visibility for families of color.     Listen and Learn:   What gap was seen in maternity care for first black and then all people of color that Mama Bird aims to close   Who qualifies for the services Mama Bird Doula Services offers  What challenges or barriers do Mama Bird's clients face  How the doulas who work with Mama Bird are trained  What the “Care-Team” model is   Who funds the work that the organization does  What makes Mama Bird's services different from other organizations  How listeners can create a program similar to Mama Bird in their own area    Resources & Mentions:  Mama Bird Doula Services    InJoy Products:  Understanding Pregnancy Curriculum Understanding Birth Curriculum Understanding Breastfeeding Curriculum Understanding Your Newborn Curriculum

Why Your Nest Doesn't Feel Right - #9497

A Word With You

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 6, 2023

Recently, a friend of mine had a ringside seat on a family of birds. They actually decided to nest under the roof on the porch. The fun part was watching the birth and development of those baby birds. My friend actually got to see them hatching out and then settling down into their nest. They all fit in there so nicely - at first. See, Mama kept filling their open mouths with more and more food, and the little birdies didn't stay little! They grew and the nest seemed to shrink. As it got more and more crowded, each baby did more and more wiggling around to kind of keep his position in the nest. Then they feathered out and they forgot about all of them sitting in the nest ever again! Well, they began to perch on the edges of the nest until they were pushed off the edge by their siblings in a battle for whatever food Mama brought. One by one, as crowding pushed those little birds to the edge - and then over the edge - they were forced to fly or die. They decided to fly. The last nester stayed in the nest for actually another full week, being fed as an only child by Mama Bird. Finally, Mama must have gotten disgusted with her nest-addicted child. She quit feeding him. First, there was a lot of squawking and fussing, and then even he abandoned the nest to finally touch the sky. I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Why Your Nest Doesn't Feel Right." We all know what those baby birds have to discover - that they weren't made to just hunker down in their comfortable nest. Neither are we. Those birds are destined to leave where it's safe so they can finally fly, and so are we. In fact, God uses an example just like this to describe His loving plan for our lives. It's in our word for today from the Word of God in Deuteronomy 32:10-11. It says of a child of God, "He shielded him and cared for him; He guarded him as the apple of his eye, like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them on its pinions." The mother eagle actually removes all the cushioning in her nest, and that leaves her eaglets living on just the rocks and the sticks underneath. Ultimately, the stirring of that nest leads to their willingness to leave the nest where they had been so comfortable and then they ultimately take to the sky. Maybe your nest isn't quite as comfy as it once was. Things are stirring - they're changing. In your environment and in your heart there's this gnawing restlessness that seems to say, "God's got more for you than this." He does, and He's making you restless for it because restlessness almost always precedes a great work of God. Your Lord's trying to move you into a new season of your life where you can make a far greater difference than you have ever made before. But you'll miss it if you insist on staying where it's safe; financially safe, geographically safe, occupationally safe, where it's methodologically safe, socially safe. Abraham would never have discovered God's amazing plans for his life unless he was first willing to leave the safety and prosperity of a familiar and secure place. The disciples would have always been just another bunch of fishermen unless they had been willing to abandon the security of their career for the call of Jesus. Peter could have never known what it was to walk on water if he hadn't gotten out of the boat. Neither will you. God has much more of Him that He wants you to experience, but it will only happen as you move beyond all your usual security blankets and you abandon yourself to total trust in Him. He has so much more He wants to do with your life, but it's beyond your comfort zone. Like those baby birds, you weren't created to just hunker down in your safe, secure little nest - a nest that's becoming increasingly unsatisfying isn't it? You see, that's because you're destined to fly!

Madison and I talk about the unique job of being Kangaroulas, a unique birth worker that was developed by Dr. Nils Bergman and his wife Jills Bergman to focus on bonding and attachment of baby and mother. We also talk about our unique premature baby stories. Madison Hendry (aka Mama Bird), transitioned into motherhood in 2014. As a visual artist and recent graduate in 2011 with a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY, she began to see a shift in her artwork, career, and perspective on life. Her artwork has been exhibited and published internationally and included in pioneering events such as Project AfterBirth; the first-ever international exhibition based on the subject of early parenthood. With the premature birth of her second son, Madison became fascinated with the dynamics of the mother/infant relationship. She realized her touch, sound, smell, milk, and relationship with him were not only beneficial; she was essential and played an active role in his development. The process of having a premature infant taught her to listen to her instincts and her child's needs and respond to them. Madison received a scholarship and completed her Breastfeeding Educator Certification with Birth Arts International in 2018. She went on to become a Certified Birth Doula with BirthWorks Int. And Certified Kangaroula with Jill & Dr. Nils Bergman in 2020. Madison has over 9 years (and counting) of personal breastfeeding experience. She lives in a 1950s Sears Home in Cleveland, OH suburbs with her husband, tattooer, Angus Hendry, two boys, Angus and Huckleberry, daughter, Evergreen, and a baby on the way. Ki Teitzei, this week's parsha, has the most number of mitzvot mentioned in all of the 54 parsha installments. These mitzvot are pretty miscellaneous — paying wages on time, family inheritence, treatment of domestic animals, weights and measures, and lots of others. One mitzvah that continually perplexes us is one dealing with baby birds, mama birds, and their nests - the mitzvah of שילוח הקן / Shiluach HaKen, or sending away the nest. It's special for a few reasons - firstly, it's one of only 2 mitzvot in the Torah where a reward is specifically mentioned (the other is Kibud Av v'Em, honoring one's mother and father). We are instructed that if we come upon a mother bird upon her nest of either eggs or young, we are to shoo the mother bird away before taking the eggs or the young. If we take the eggs / young after shooing the mother away, it will be “good for us” and we will have a long life - לְמַ֨עַן֙ יִ֣יטַב לָ֔ךְ וְהַֽאֲרַכְתָּ֖ יָמִֽים. What's the first thing that comes to mind for this? I think the natural train of thought is, “Oh, G-d loves all creatures. It's kind of mean to take a mother's babies when she's there, so the mitzvah is to NOT let her see them being taken.” But then why is eating meat ok?? If it's “mean to animals” to kill them, we shouldn't eat them!! Ok so the Ramban, Rabbi Moshe ben Nachman, explains that having compassion for animals simply inculcates compassion for humanity. People should accustom themselves to act mercifully and kindly to all. And if we're kind and empathetic to even baby birds, then even more so would we be kind to our fellow humans. Lovely idea! Also you can see the obvious parallel between Kibud Av v'Em and Shiluach Haken, because we have the respect of a parent at the center. Shiluach Haken is interesting though because the mitzvah only counts if it's the MOTHER bird, not the father bird, while Kibud Av v'Em is both the mother and the father. Let me know your thoughts on this distinction! Ok so let's talk more broadly about mitzvot! As we learn from a few sources, there are 613 mitzvot. According to the Midrash, there are 248 positive mitzvot (Mitzvot Aseh, a mitzvot you SHOULD do), and 365 negative mitzvot (Mitzvot Lo Taaesh, mitzvot you should NOT do). We learn that 248 corresponds to the number of bones / limbs in the human body. Every part of the body is directly related to one of those mitzvot. (EX: you should OPEN your hand to give charity - תִּפְתַּ֛ח אֶת־יָֽדְךָ֖). Every part of our physical body, then, is elevated by the mitzvot corresponding. The 248 mitzvot become our spiritual “body” double. Ok so what about the 365? The Or HaChaim cites the Arizal - our soul is split into many sparks of life. Each spark represents a day we have been granted by G-d. Each day we have an opportunity to do a mitzvah. If we complete a mitzvah, the spark is actualized. If we do not do a mitzvah, that spark becomes blemished. The Or HaChaim says this helps us to understand sleep - we need sleep to be the “changing of the guard.” Replacing yesterday's spark with tomorrow's. And when sleep is described as 1/60th of death, this makes sense! One bit of our soul IS departing - one spark-let is leaving but if G-d wants us to live another day, we get a new one for the next day. So every day is an opportunity to connect with the Divine every day of the year - 365 times per year. Because the 365 negative mitzvot correspond to each day of our lives. Every day is an opportunity to connect to the Divine and every limb is, too. Ashley and her husband purchased a farm house in February of 2017 that came with seven chickens and so they decided that they wanted to start selling free range eggs and honey locally. They added onto their flock and at one point had up to 90 chickens, ducks and geese. Ashley joined us to tell some of the crazy experiences she has had since she started this journey so we hope you all enjoy as much as we did!

Rare are those birds who go, ‘I know what I was made for.’” —Priscilla McKinney   “I think it's about staring down this difficult situations and seeing them as opportunities.” —Priscilla McKinney   “It takes a long time to become the business owner and the entrepreneur and the leader that you want to be. It's a long time. But, once you get that voice, you are not going to walk away from it, you're not going to stop talking. ” —Priscilla McKinney   “I believe in process. I believe in creating a system that teaches your clients how to work with you, really develops a relationship model with your clients, and that is really geared towards partnership. How are we going to do this together?” —Priscilla McKinney   “Who are you sharing that bold idea with? Are they really the right person? By that, I mean sometimes we share this bold, crazy idea with someone who is not qualified to give us sound advice. I'd say, slow it down, think it through for a minute, because I do believe in process.” —Priscilla McKinney Resources Priscilla’s Twitter and LinkedIn Little Bird Marketing Website Ponderings from the Perch Podcast

If it's not important to do right now… Is it really important to do? It is easy for entrepreneurs and business leaders to get caught up in the busyness of our own design, letting a stack of What If projects grow until they consume us. But we don't have to get caught up in the ‘burden of the backburner.' We can stop, take stock, and build the life we want based on a clear purpose. We can start with WHY. Priscilla McKinney is the CEO and resident Mama Bird at Little Bird Marketing, a boutique agency based in Joplin, Missouri. Little Bird works with premiere brands, helping them gain clarity around messaging and develop an annual plan for content delivery and lead generation that aligns with their sales goals. McKinney also serves as the host of Ponderings from the Perch: A Modern Podcast for the Modern Entrepreneur. Today, McKinney explains how others saw her potential in the realm of marketing when she did not. She shares the lessons she learned when her creative studio burned to the ground and how the experience helped her to ponder the WHY—and build the business AND the life she wanted. Listen in for McKinney's insight on what she calls ‘the burden of the backburner' and learn how to let go of the What If projects and focus on what's important to do right now!   Key Interview Takeaways Listen to the people who see you. McKinney took over a local advertising firm when the woman who owned it pointed out that marketing is her native genius. Start with WHY. Little Bird Marketing is different because McKinney's team asks good questions up front to help clients get clarity regarding their desired outcome. Your business is the people. When McKinney's creative studio burned to the ground, it gave her the opportunity to carve out the business she wanted—and the life she wanted around that business. If it's not important to do right now, it's not important to do. It is easy for entrepreneurs to get buried under the pressure of What If projects—but rebuilding after the fire in her studio helped McKinney get free of the ‘burden of the backburner.' Team up with premiere brands. To avoid disingenuous marketing, Little Bird makes it a point to work with companies that deliver at an 8, 9 or 10, simply bringing their branding and content strategy up to the same standards. Spiritpreneur ™ School: Spiritual Business for Entrepreneurs

Hey Goddess, UNGentle reminder, news alert, all points bulletin: THEY DON’T ALL DESERVE YOUR MAGIC. I just had a chat with an amazing woman who just signed up for my Spiritpreneur Guru Academy — & was in TEARS because her “BEST FRIENDS” are un-supportive of her goals & dreams. She said that as she has been talking about her incredible coaching and product biz she wants to build, they say versions of: “people like us” don’t build businesses. They say she’s not educated enough, too broke and too old. This woman — who has a record of life success, hustle & making stuff happen — was seeing herself as LESS THAN because of her family & “friends.” And I know she’s not alone. Listen, you do NOT need to share all of your dreams with EVERYBODY. I was reminded of this recently as well. OF COURSE THEY CAN’T SEE IT — THE VISION WAS GIVEN TO YOU, NOT THEM. Different relationships serve different purposes. If your Friday night drink buddies aren’t down to sit and do a quarterly goals review with you, then realize their position in your life or move on. They want to keep you small because they want to keep you safe— but more importantly, they want to keep themselves safe. They don’t want you upsetting the balance of the Universe as THEY see it. So what do you do? You can OPT THE EFF OUT of relationships where you can’t bring your whole self to the party. Sometimes it may be a LESS HARSH situation. When something hasn’t come into being YET, we DEAL with our OWN FEARS, BAGGAGE & ISSUES. So we may not be strong enough for someone’s well-meaning questions or doubtful energy. Their ‘NO’ ENERGY or QUESTIONING ENERGY for your dreams may be more powerful than your ‘YES’ ENERGY. YOU need all of your heart strength to give birth to your dream— not to CONVINCE people who don’t even BELIEVE in THEMSELVES to believe in YOU. This is what praying in the closet means. Nurture your dreams like a Mama Bird nurtures her eggs. She doesn’t get up to give everyone a peek & ask what they think. She is sure of the outcome, so she sits, focuses, creates, takes inspired action & manifests. Don’t spread your dreams under everyone’s feet. Some are dream tramplers. Your BELIEF is POWERFUL magic. It DISSIPATES when you open it to the BLIND. xoxo, a. P.S. Make it happen for YOU.
