Todd Palmer, senior vice president of global partner sales at Tanium, joins Larry Walsh to talk about the mythical “right partners” that vendors always seek to sell their products and why it's important to set the right expectations when developing go-to-market partnerships.  Vendors often say that they want to work with the right partners — resellers and solution providers with the ability and willingness to sell their products, support their customers, and, most of all, book consistent sales and beat revenue expectations.   “The right partners” are the white whales of the channel — a bit of a myth, if not misnamed. A partner's appropriateness for a vendor's go-to-market needs and program depends on alignment of the right product, vendor brand and product marketability, and sales economics, and on the partner's alignment in capabilities, capacity, and willingness to invest resources.   That's a pretty tall order, which is probably why the average vendor generates about 95% of its indirect revenue through less than 5% of its partners. And that's also probably the reason why so many channel people say they want “the right” partners. In the survey for our 2022 Channel Chief Outlook, 83% of channel professionals said they're challenged in getting partners to meet their sales goals and revenue expectations.  It's an endless pursuit to identify, recruit, enable, and engage partners that will self-actualize in the market, hunt for net-new opportunities, and build books of business that accelerate revenue growth.  Channel veteran Todd Palmer, senior vice president of global partner sales at security vendor Tanium, joins Changing Channels to discuss ongoing efforts to find the right partners, how it's often an unrealistic pursuit, and how vendors should approach the issue of finding qualified and capable go-to-market partners.   Follow us, Like us, and Subscribe!  Channelnomics: https://channelnomics.com/   LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/2NC6Vli   Twitter: https://twitter.com/Channelnomics      Changing Channels Is a Channelnomics Production  Follow @Channelnomics to stay current on the latest #research, #bestpractices, and #resources. Len Herstein sits down with Kevin to discuss the dangers of complacency and why vigilance enables us to remain successful. Self-awareness is a start. He shares some of the challenges he has ever faced as an entrepreneur and how he addressed them. He says the biggest challenge was imposter syndrome. Todd never felt he deserved his success. He never owned the success but owned his failures.  To solve this, he decided to work on himself and hired a coach to help him see purpose in his life.Another big challenge Todd faced was COVID-19. With its impacts felt in almost every industry, COVID-19 was also a threat to his business. But quickly realizing that COVID-19 “happened for us, not to us,” was key in navigating and finding opportunities amidst the pandemic. One final challenge Todd faced is operating in Vacuum. However, he was able to overcome this with the help of Jack Stack's book, The Great Game Of Business, open-book management. He says he doubled down on using Jack Stack's tools extensively and overcame this challenge. He says there's one critical skill that all entrepreneurs should have to succeed. “The best leaders I have ever interacted with are the ones who ask the best questions, and practice the most active listening.” Links and Resources Connect With Todd PalmerWebsite: https://extraordinaryadvisors.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/toddpalmer1/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCswsalTqVuynCKv1rwCyJfQMentioned ResourcesLiving Well From Within YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcPn9PIGkEe5fWDOEIMB8yQ/featuredThe Great Game of Business: Unlocking the Power and Profitability of Open-Book Management https://www.amazon.com/Great-Game-Business-Expanded-Updated/dp/0385348339 Don't forget to check out this week's featured tool for entrepreneurs below! If your business was $600,000 in debt, what would you do?   If you're like most people, you'd probably figure out a way to throw in the towel, sell off assets and call it a day.    After all, they can't all be winners, right?   But if you ask Todd Palmer what he did, you'd get a totally different answer.    He found himself in a place where he was over $600,000 in debt.    He was depressed.   He wasn't sleeping.  The bank was about to foreclose on his house, leaving him and his son homeless.    What did he do? Todd was a guest on the Leadercast Podcast and talked all about:  - Hitting rock bottom and how it was the best thing to happen to his career   - When a company should and should not throw in the towel    - Why discovering your “why” is crucial to making it.    Check out the full podcast with Todd Palmer by clicking here.
