March 24, 2025 | Season 5 | Episode 8Clarity of mind is your most valuable asset in today's complex financial landscape. Keith Lanton opens with powerful insights from James Clear's philosophy on understanding others by watching what they reward and understanding yourself by observing what you envy. These principles form the foundation of the objective thinking necessary for navigating markets filled with noise and competing narratives. As we mark the 25th anniversary of the dot-com bubble burst, Lenton draws important parallels and distinctions to our current market environment. While today's AI-driven rally carries echoes of that era, the magnitude doesn't yet match the extreme appreciation witnessed between 1995-2000 when the NASDAQ soared over 700% before losing 80% of its value. This historical perspective provides valuable context for evaluating today's technology valuations. We're also reflecting on the five-year anniversary of the COVID-19 market bottom, a reminder of the market's resilience through pandemic disruptions, political upheaval, geopolitical conflicts, and aggressive rate hikes. The S&P 500's 173% return since March 2020 reinforces the wisdom that attempting to trade around news cycles is nearly impossible for individual investors. The podcast delves into the Treasury Secretary's focused campaign to lower 10-year yields, NVIDIA's ambitious AI roadmap unveiled at their GTC conference, and the infrastructure challenges posed by AI's massive electricity demands. Lenton also highlights potential policy changes affecting municipal bond tax exemptions that investors should monitor carefully.Throughout these diverse topics, one theme remains consistent: the quality of your investment decisions depends on maintaining clear, objective thinking while understanding both your own psychology and broader market sentiment. What single habit, if implemented consistently for the rest of this year, would transform your investing approach and results?** For informational and educational purposes only, not intended as investment advice. This week, Gillian chats with Professor Tim Lenton, a seasoned expert in Earth System Science from the University of Exeter to find out. We dive into the profound connections between our planet's systems and the Gaia hypothesis; exploring how the conditions of life on earth are maintained by self-regulating systems in the ocean, atmosphere, rock and by life itself.Key Takeaways:Understanding Earth System Science:Earth System Science views our planet as a cohesive unit, focusing on the thin, life-supporting layer from the top of the atmosphere to the crust. This perspective emphasises the interconnectedness and interdependence of all planetary components.Gaia Theory Revisited:Gaia theory conceptualises Earth as a self-regulating, complex system, akin to a living entity but not an organism. It maintains its stability through feedback mechanisms, despite lacking the robust material exchanges characteristic of organisms.Climate Tipping Points:The discussion highlights critical tipping points in the climate system, such as the melting of ice caps and permafrost, which could dramatically alter global climate patterns and sea levels.Positive Tipping Points:Positive developments in renewable energy technologies, such as solar and wind power, are becoming self-sustaining through economies of scale and could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.Societal and Behavioural Changes:Emphasising the need for a shift in societal behaviours and norms, particularly in energy consumption and diet (reducing meat consumption), which are crucial for achieving sustainable environmental outcomes.Global Gaia Happiness IndexA new measure of success. Fifth of the world’s people face life-threatening heat by end of 2100

At the end of the century, more than two billion people will be living in countries where extreme heat becomes life-threatening according to researchers in Europe and China. That is expected to be a fifth of the population according to their research just published. The warning about life-threatening global warming says that extreme heat will make life unbearable for many in the Global South. The authors of the report on global warming say evidence shows humans have historically flourished in regions where the temperature is around 13 degrees Celsius. Monsoon areas in South Asia have also fared well peaking at around 27 degrees Celsius. But the report says people living in areas outside of these favored climates are less likely to thrive. Using previously published research, the report says human health declines for many reasons, such as poor agriculture, therefore poor diet and nutrition. Extreme heat also leads to lost days of employment and poorer economic outcomes as well as having a direct effect on human health according to the report. Countries in Europe will become drier too according to lead author Professor Tim Lenton from the University of Exeter. He describes the areas that will survive well as a ‘niche' zone. The study calculates that by conservative projections the temperature will have reached 2.7 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels in the year 2100. It says that means two billion people would be living in life-threatening climatic conditions. According to Lenton, less than 1% of humanity currently lives in places of dangerous heat exposure, but the study shows climate change has already put 9% of the population – more than 600 million people – outside this favored ‘niche' area. Lenton believes it's important not just to focus on the deaths that will occur because of extreme heat. He believes it's also important to focus on how efforts to hold down global temperatures now will save billions of lives in the future. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Here is the latest session of our online study of Chris Green's new book, Being Transfigured, in which we talked about doubt. Here are some of the quotes from the chapter that we cited and discussed:• Grace cannot save us without first losing us, which means grace always makes things awkward.• Not all questions are faithless. And sometimes, in fact, the only faithful response to truth is confusion.• If we're honest, we'll have to admit that much of what passes for doubt is nothing but honest hesitation, the inevitable upshot of generations of poor or bad teaching, teaching which trades in simplicities and cheap certainties, often eschewing pain at all costs, leaving us to feel that our salvation depends not on the mystery of faith, sustained by God's devotion to us, but on our own grasp of our own beliefs or on the intensity of our desire for religious experiences.• We have to be saved from “simple faith.” But not so that we might have “great faith.” That, too, always proves false. We need, instead, “the faith of God,” which is what is left of our faith after it has been purged by the Spirit.

Wrapping your head around the idea that God, the creator of everything, loves you as his child and creation, is not the simplest exercise. In the bible, it says we are created in the image of God, designed to be in relationship with him. But how can we practically live in the idea of God as creator, on a daily basis? This week, Gold Coast Associate Ps. Isaac Lenton, discusses his journey of bridging the gap of God as creator, and us living as he created us to be.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart . . .” Proverbs 3:5a As we begin our Lenten journey, it seems appropriate to explore the topic of trust, trust in God, trust in ourselves and trust in others. Trust influences our experience of life and is fundamental to our sense of safety and security in the world. It is foundational to our psychological and spiritual development from birth through adulthood. The well-known psychologist, Erik Erikson, developed one of the most popular and influential theories of human psychosocial development. The first stage he describes is Trust vs. Mistrust which begins at birth and extends to about 18 months. During this period, the child forms a view of whether or not the world is a safe and loving place. According to Erikson this is the most important stage since it shapes the child's world view and influences the personality she/he develops. James Fowler, a theologian and professor at Emory University, developed the Stages of Faith in which he describes a process of human faith development. His first stage, Stage 0 extends from birth to 2 years. He calls this stage Undifferentiated Faith. It is similar to Erikson's first stage in that this is the period when a child learns about the safety and security of his/her environment. If the child experiences consistent nurture and care, then she/he develops a sense of trust and safety in the universe and the divine. If neglect, hurt and abuse are experienced, then mistrust in the divine and the universe develops. If we are to engage in the process of reflection and self-examination that we are called to during Lent, then trust in that process is important. Trust that we will be safe embarking on such a journey; that God will be with us and we won't be challenged with more than we can handle. No one is completely trusting or totally mistrusting. We are all somewhere on a trust continuum. As we are willing to be open to where we are on that continuum and explore our life experiences that have landed us there, we have the opportunity to change and grow.As you move through each of the five steps, consider this issue of trust and your relationship with it. Try to practice it as many times as possible this week.·       Place yourself in God's presence. How does it feel to place yourself in God's presence?  Give thanks for God's great love for you. Do you truly believe and trust God's great love for you?·       Pray for the grace to understand how God is acting in your life. Do you trust that God will give you grace to understand God's action in your life?·       Review your day — recall specific moments and your feelings at the time. What moments during the day brought feelings of trust or mistrust?·       Reflect on what you did, said, or thought in those instances. Were you drawing closer to God, or further away? How did trust or mistrust influence what you said, did and thought and your sense of being close to or further away from God?·       Look toward tomorrow — think of how you might collaborate more effectively with Spirit. Be specific. How would you like to be different in the coming day? How might you practice greater trust? Conclude with The Lord's Prayer or your own prayer around trust. Ask for clarity and guidance where you need it. Ask for wisdom and courage where you need it.Support the showSupport us here:https://www.bpcusa.org/financial-ministry/ BPC Youtube Channel:https://www.youtube.com/c/BrentwoodPresbyterianChurch
