Welcome back to another special episode of Run with Fitpage! In episode 183, we're revisiting our chat with one of the most loved guests on the show so far - Pete Pfitzinger. Pete is an American former distance runner, an author, and an exercise physiologist. In this episode, Vikas and Pete talk about how you can train to run faster.Pfitzinger is a 1979 graduate of Cornell University. He also holds a Master of Business Administration from Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management and a Master of Arts in exercise science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Pfitzinger is the co-author of two highly popular training books for distance runners - Advanced Marathoning (with Scott Douglas) and Faster Road Racing (with Philip Latter). He is also a senior writer for Running Times Magazine. In the 1984 Olympic Marathon Team Trials, Pfitzinger became immediately known among American marathoners by storming past the heavily favored Alberto Salazar in the final fifty yards to win the race, in a time of 2:11:43. In the 1988 Olympic Marathon Team Trials, Pfitzinger finished 3rd in a time of 2:13:09. He was a consistent performer: All of his 13 career marathons were run in times between 2:11:43 - 2:15:21. He won 5 of his 13 marathons, and finished 2nd or 3rd in 4 others. We cared for our farmer-owners, who cared for the land, which sustained healthier cows, which provided better milk. And better milk made better dairy products. It's a simple recipe that we've followed for over a century and it has never failed. More About Paul Snyder: Paul Snyder joined the Tillamook County Creamery Association (TCCA) in 2019, as Executive Vice President of Stewardship. In this role, Paul leads several functions including corporate responsibility, sustainability, community engagement, corporate communications, government affairs, farm services, and co-op member relations. Before joining TCCA, Paul served as Global Vice President – Corporate Responsibility at InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), based in Atlanta, Georgia. In that role, Paul co-led IHG's global corporate responsibility function and directly oversaw sustainability strategy and execution for the company's nearly 5,200 hotels worldwide. Additionally, he directed the company's Americas Public Affairs activities, its U.S. based Foundation and several community-based and diversity-focused initiatives. He also held various other leadership positions during his time at IHG in development, operations, marketing, and brand management. Prior to joining IHG, Paul worked at Marriott International in the company's Brand Management, Development and IT departments. He started his career in the hospitality industry with Winegardner & Hammons, Inc. as a line level employee at a Holiday Inn hotel and was promoted into managerial positions in both the Food & Beverage and Rooms departments. In addition to his role at TCCA, Paul currently serves on the board of directors for Newtrient, an organization that partners with dairy farmers, technology providers and other stakeholders to help them make informed decisions regarding manure management opportunities and challenges. Additionally, he serves on the Advisory Committee of Oregon's Greenhouse Gas Emissions Program 2021 Rulemaking — a new Climate Protection Program to limit greenhouse gas emissions from some of the most significant sources in Oregon. Prior to relocating to Oregon to join TCCA, Paul was a committed community leader in Atlanta, having served on the Boards of the Georgia Center for Non-Profits, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Opera and the Metro Atlanta Chapter of the American Red Cross. He also led the Marketing efforts for the Atlanta chapter of Conscious Capitalism. Dean Nelson, what makes a Cornell Executive MBA program different from other EMBA programs? [1:55] [Dean Mark Nelson] That's a great question, Linda. I mean, first off is the fact that we have these four different flavors of a Cornell MBA. And that's very intentional, it's been developed over time. We started initially with our Metro EMBA program, which is based in New York City, and which is focused on a general management EMBA, providing that jurisdiction, that market. Second, then we have our Americas EMBA program, and that's a really unique program where we're reaching out to executives throughout the Americas using our own unique approach to distributed learning. And then third, we created an FMBA program, a collaboration with Tsinghua University, a finance-focused EMBA, and that's bilingual and offered in Beijing. And then fourth, we have our MBA/MS in Healthcare Leadership program, which is providing both an EMBA and also an MS in healthcare from two great institutions, the Johnson School and the Weill Cornell Medicine. And so I go through that because the unique combination here is that we've got a general interest EMBA in New York, we've got something focused in the healthcare sector, we've got something that's a unique and leading program in China, and then this Americas program serving the Americas. And I see that as a pretty special and unique roster of great EMBA programs. Now, when you think about what's the spine that relates all these together, there's a couple things that I'd shout out, and then I'd maybe ask my colleague, Manoj, if there's anything he wants to add in. One is that in all of these programs, we have a team-based learning approach that we think is really, really important. And by that I mean that we have students that, of course they're performing individually, but they're also on small teams, they're coached, they're assessed, they're given feedback. So we think of business as a team sport, and the ability of these executives to deliver exceptionally well in that context, we think it's really important and so we're very intentional about how we go about that approach. It is the case that in all of these programs, the students are working on problems that they're addressing at work right now, so they're able to put it into practice, and we think that team-based approach is really key. And I guess the other thing that is unique, not only about the EMBA programs but about Cornell is that we have our Cornell Tech campus in New York City. In the 97th episode of Run with Fitpage, we had the opportunity to speak to Pete Pfitzinger. Pete is an American former distance runner, an author, and an exercise physiologist. In this episode, Vikas and Pete talk about how you can train to run faster.Pfitzinger is a 1979 graduate of Cornell University. He also holds a Master of Business Administration from Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management and a Master of Arts in exercise science from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Pfitzinger is the co-author of two highly popular training books for distance runners - Advanced Marathoning (with Scott Douglas) and Faster Road Racing (with Philip Latter). He is also a senior writer for Running Times Magazine. In the 1984 Olympic Marathon Team Trials, Pfitzinger became immediately known among American marathoners by storming past the heavily favored Alberto Salazar in the final fifty yards to win the race, in a time of 2:11:43. In the 1988 Olympic Marathon Team Trials, Pfitzinger finished 3rd in a time of 2:13:09. He was a consistent performer: All of his 13 career marathons were run in times between 2:11:43 - 2:15:21. He won 5 of his 13 marathons, and finished 2nd or 3rd in 4 others. He works on creating digital nudges that leverage technology to achieve massive scale and help millions make better financial decisions. He received a Ph.D. from Cornell University's Johnson Graduate School of Management and is currently a professor emeritus and co-founder of the Behavioral Decision-Making Group at UCLA Anderson School of Management. He is also a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Wharton Behavior Change for Good Initiative.   Benartzi's work has demonstrated the potential for far-reaching improvement. Along with Nobel Laureate Richard Thaler of the University of Chicago, he pioneered the Save More Tomorrow™ (SMarT) program, a behavioral prescription designed to nudge employees to increase their savings rates gradually over time. In their original research, Benartzi and Thaler found that SMarT increased employee savings rates from 3.5 percent to 13.6 percent. The SMarT program is now offered by more than half of the large retirement plans in the U.S. and a growing number of plans in Australia and the U.K. The program has also been incorporated into the Pension Protection Act of 2006, enabling approximately 15 million Americans to boost their retirement savings.   To help bridge the gap between academic research and the real world, Benartzi has worked with many financial institutions and served on multiple advisory boards. Robert H. Frank is the Henrietta Johnson Louis Professor of Management and Professor of Economics at Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management. I don't know him personally and until 2016 I had no idea who he was, but that's the year I read an article in The Atlantic entitled, "Why Luck Matters More Than You Think." It was intriguing me, but honestly, there wasn't anything new about my intrigue. The subject of luck has fascinated me for a long time. Some people don't believe in luck. Or serendipity. Or chance. Especially when it comes to success or achievement. By "late-life" I don't necessarily mean age, but it might include that. Most certainly it includes experience. A person begins to learn something at an early age. Take a current professional ice hockey player. His parents put him in ice skates for the first time when he was 3. Since then he's spent almost as much time in ice skates as he has sneakers. By the time he's approaching 14, he's a decade into the learning curve. Off he goes to play major junior hockey - a high level of play for boys approaching high school. He moves to another town where the team is located and he begins to play the highest level of amateur hockey while living with a host family who has taken him in. Before his 18th birthday, he's drafted by an NHL team. He's 15 years into the learning process, but he's only 18. A person matures past middle-age. She's spent her entire life pursuing art. As a young girl, she fell in love with painting and she's been at it ever since. It's never earned her much of a living. Until now. A while back she had a little showing at a local gallery. A blogger with a widely read blog happened to live in the area and visited the exhibition. And wrote a piece about this woman's artwork, along with posting some pictures of her work. About a hundred miles away, in a big city, an art gallery owner saw the blog post about this now older woman's showing. An email was sent and now after 4 decades of painting artwork in relative obscurity, she's achieving late-life luck. She's experienced at art and life. There are many flipside stories that counterbalance these. Stories of people who began early and never found any success. People who persisted for decades and never found any luck. Robert Frank is the H. J. Louis Professor of Management and Economics at Cornell University. His newest book “Under the Influence, Putting Peer Pressure to Work” discusses how social environments profoundly shape our behaviors and how we can unlock the power of social influence – through fascinating ideas from behavioral contagion to consumption taxation. 

 In this interview, Prof. Frank explains the core ideas of his book in detail: how individuals are constantly “under the influence” of others’ behaviors and thus do not always make the most rational decisions; how Adam Smith’s concept of “Invisible Hand” has been greatly misconstrued and overblown by free marketers; why we have a powerful and legitimate public policy interest in encouraging socially beneficial memes and discouraging socially harmful ones… We also discuss Prof. Frank’s progressive consumption tax proposal. It may sound surprising to many, but imposing higher tax rates for the rich might not hurt their purchase power because the prices for the scarce goods they pursue will come down correspondingly. However, by taxing lavish spending behaviors, we can discourage competitive biddings that do not improve society’s overall welfare. On the other hand, a progressive consumption tax would encourage saving and investment in ways that income taxes cannot, and a carbon tax will be effective in disincentivizing environmentally unfriendly activities. The deeper part of the conversation is towards the end, when Prof. Frank and Tiger talk about whether the field of economics needs a somewhat complete reworking – not to simply include more behavioral economists’ opinions, but even rethink the ways we teach about supply & demand and uproot fundamental theorems. It matters because economics is not an objective science, and it is built upon a set of assumptions that often do not hold true in reality when irrational agents come together. We talk about the “mis-valuing” of essential workers during Covid-19 to the glaring naïveté of free-marketeer Capitalism underpinned by UChicago-styled economists from the 80s… Robert H. Frank is the Henrietta Johnson Louis Professor of Management and Professor of Economics at Cornell's Johnson Graduate School of Management and a Distinguished Senior Fellow at Demos. For more than a decade, his "Economic View" column appeared monthly in The New York Times. Today's global pandemic is testing the limits of people’s ability to cope with massive disruption in their lives, including steps they take for the public good. And there may be lessons there regarding our response to climate change. In this edition of the Columbia Energy Exchange, host Bill Loveless is joined by Robert H. Frank, a professor of management and economics at Cornell University’s Johnson Graduate School of Management and the author of a new book from Princeton University Press called Under the Influence: Putting Peer Pressure to Work. They discuss human behavior in a crisis, whether it is the COVID-19 pandemic that we are enduring today, or the climate catastrophe that we may be just beginning to experience. In his book, Robert explains how the strongest predictor of our willingness to support climate friendly policies, install solar panels or buy an electric car is the number of people we know who have already done so. And while climate change may not be uppermost in people’s minds now amid the pandemic, he draws parallels for Bill between our reaction to this health crisis and how we might respond to climate change. They also talk about another book, one by the journalist David Wallace-Wells called The Uninhabitable Earth: Life After Warming, which Robert says had a big impact on his thinking. Psychologists have long understood that social environments profoundly shape our behavior, sometimes for the better, often for the worse. But social influence is a two-way street — our environments are themselves products of our behavior. Under the Influenceexplains how to unlock the latent power of social context. We are building bigger houses, driving heavier cars, and engaging in a host of other activities that threaten the planet — mainly because that's what friends and neighbors do. In the wake of the hottest years on record, only robust measures to curb greenhouse gases promise relief from more frequent and intense storms, droughts, flooding, wildfires, and famines. Robert Frank describes how the strongest predictor of our willingness to support climate-friendly policies, install solar panels, or buy an electric car is the number of people we know who have already done so. Frank and Shermer also discuss: luck and how lives turn out circumstances of behavior peer pressure and pressures on peers free will, volition, and self-control positive behavioral exernalities, e.g., solar panels happiness vs. purpose/meaning/comfort utilitarianism vs. natural rights theory abortion, capital punishment, polygamy, prostitution, and the selling of organs behavioral contagions: smoking, problem drinking, obesity, tax cheating, bullying, and wasteful energy use. same-sex marriage and other areas of moral progress arms races: good and bad climate change belief in god and religion in decline, and UBI (universal basic income) Robert H. Frank received his M.A. in statistics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1971, and his Ph.D. in economics in 1972, also from U.C. Berkeley. He is the Goldwin Smith Professor of Economics at Cornell University, where he has taught since 1972 and where he currently holds a joint appointment in the department of economics and the Johnson Graduate School of Management. He has published on a variety of subjects, including price and wage discrimination, public utility pricing, the measurement of unemployment spell lengths, and the distributional consequences of direct foreign investment. For the past several years, his research has focused on rivalry and cooperation in economic and social behaviour. Professor Ryan Guggenmos and Professor Kristina Rennekamp (MS '11 and PhD '12) introduce the field of behavioral accounting by discussing the common biases that individuals, investors, managers, and regulators face when making decisions. From being too overconfident when picking stocks to anchoring on a low number when buying a car - they illustrate the common biases that individuals face and connect these to managerial decisions. They also discuss their research into the evolutions of investment disclosures, including pro-forma earnings, readability, and social media as a new medium. And they describe their newly coined term I-FOMO, Investor Fear of Missing Out, which is used to assess how changing investor communication practices are impacting everyday investors.  Ryan Guggenmos is an Assistant Professor of Accounting at the Johnson Graduate School of Management. His research focuses on how biases in human behavior affect decision processes in accounting contexts. He received his PhD from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and his BA from Seattle University. At Johnson, he teaches the popular elective Managerial Accounting and Reporting. Kristina Rennekamp is an Associate Professor of Accounting at the Johnson Graduate School of Management. Her research examines financial accounting from a behavioral perspective, and particularly how biases affect managers' disclosure decisions and users' judgments with respect to those disclosures. She received her Masters of Science and PhD from Johnson in Accounting and earned her MBA and Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Iowa. He was chief of the Financial Studies Division in the research department of the International Monetary Fund; before that, he was the head of the IMF's China division. Vishal Gaur discusses the innovative ways that retailers are modifying their operations and using data to make strategic decisions. Specifically, Gaur discusses how firms can mitigate product expiration challenges by exploring different packaging sizes or moving a product’s location within a store. Gaur goes on to explain how inventory levels can help predict a firm’s financial performance, by using an example from the men’s suits retailer, Jos A Bank. He also discusses why boosting sales growth isn’t necessarily the best strategy for mature firms to pursue, but rather growing earnings is a better option. And after serving as associate dean for MBA programs for five years, Gaur provides advice for Drew Pascarella, the incoming dean for MBA programs at Johnson.  Professor Gaur is the former associate dean for MBA programs, Emerson Professor of Manufacturing Management, and professor of operations, technology and information management at the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell. He holds a PhD from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. Episode 18 - Dr. Andrew Davoodian, MD, MBA, was born in Los Angeles and raised in Central California in the Assyrian-dense city of Turlock. He completed his undergraduate studies in Integrative Biology with an emphasis on Human Biology at the University of California, Berkeley. At UC Berkeley, he created, lectured and directed courses in Modern Assyrian Culture, Introduction to Neo-Assyrian/Neo-Aramaic (INANA), and Assyrian Dance–the first such courses on Modern Assyrian Studies at a major academic research university. He also helped advance an “Assyrian/Chaldean” checkbox for the world’s largest educational system, the University of California admissions application, making for the largest-scale state demographic recognition of the Assyrian identity. He then earned his Masters in Business Administration at the Johnson Graduate School of Management with a graduate minor in Real Estate at The School of Hotel Administration at the SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University in New York. He then earned his Doctor of Medicine at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine and is currently completing his residency training in Anesthesiology & Perioperative Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland.

Professor Robert H. Frank is the Henrietta Johnson Louis Professor of Management Professor of Economics at Cornell University's S.C. Johnson Graduate School of Management. He is a monthly contributor to the "Economic Scene" column in The New York Times. Until 2001, he was the Goldwin Smith Professor of Economics, Ethics, and Public Policy in Cornell's College of Arts and Sciences at Cornell University. He has also served as a Peace Corps volunteer in rural Nepal, chief economist for the Civil Aeronautics Board, fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences, and was Professor of American Civilization at École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris. Professor Frank's books include Choosing the Right Pond, Passions within Reason, Microeconomics and Behavior, Luxury Fever, and What Price the Moral High Ground? The Winner-Take-All Society, co-authored with Philip Cook, was named a Notable Book of the Year by The New York Times, and was included in Business Week's list of the ten best books for 1995. Professor Frank holds a BS in mathematics from the Georgia Institute of Technology. He also holds an MA in statistics and a PhD in economics, both from UC Berkeley.
