In this episode of Thriving in Intersectionality, host Lola Adeyemo speaks with Craig DeLarge, a digital healthcare strategist and mental health advocate whose remarkable 45-year career spans pharmaceutical giants, academia, and global leadership. Craig began as a fashion design major before switching to marketing and has subsequently led to an impressive career trajectory through marketing research, advertising, product management, and eventually digital strategy in the pharmaceutical industry at companies like Johnson & Johnson, GlaxoSmithKline, Novo Nordisk, Merck, and Takeda. Parallel to his corporate roles, he maintained a 25-year teaching career across five business schools in the Philadelphia area. In this conversation, Craig shares invaluable insights on career development across cultural boundaries, the transformative power of international experience, and why it's never too late to pursue new opportunities and advanced education. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why it's never too late to pursue new career opportunities and advanced education How international experience can transform your perspective and challenge unconscious biases The importance of focusing on process and legacy rather than just career outcomes How personal challenges can evolve into professional purpose and advocacy Understanding intersectionality as a source of both challenges and unique strengths Key Career Insights: Age is Just a Number in Career Development Craig completed his first international assignment at 49 and obtained his second graduate degree at 53. His message to younger professionals: "Don't give up... It's not too late if you're called to it, if you surround yourself with the right community, and if you have a vision for yourself and how you want to impact the world." International Experience Transforms Perspective His three years in Singapore challenged his "American Imperial bias" and connected him with the global African diaspora in unexpected ways. For cross-cultural success, Craig advises: maintain a sense of humor about yourself, build community, and be willing to critique your own biases. Focus on Process, Not Just Outcomes "Make sure that whatever outcome you want, you're not forgetting to have fun and to be engaging meaningfully in the process... You have more control over the process of your career than the outcome of your career." Personal Challenges Drive Professional Purpose A family tragedy involving mental health 19 years ago transformed Craig's career focus, leading to his current work combining digital health expertise with mental health advocacy. This demonstrates how our personal journeys can inform and enrich our professional contributions. About Our Guest Craig DeLarge's career includes executive roles at Johnson & Johnson, GlaxoSmithKline, Novo Nordisk, Merck, and Takeda, alongside 25 years as a university professor teaching marketing, communications, leadership, and business ethics. His educational journey includes degrees from Philadelphia University, University of Westminster (UK), and King's College London. Craig's intersectional identity as an African American male from the South raised in the North, along with his roles as husband, father, and grandfather, have shaped his unique perspective on career development and leadership. The Northern Wei was a nomadic conquest dynasty that existed in north China between 386 and 535 CE. It was founded by the Tuoba (Tabgach) clan of the Xianbei (Särpi) peoples, a nomadic-pastoralist people originating from the Mongolian steppes. The Northern Wei is particularly noted for unifying northern China in the first half of the fifth century, bringing an end to the chaotic Sixteen Kingdoms period that plagued China for almost a century. In addition to bringing relative peace to north China, the Northern Wei also saw the firm establishment of Buddhism. The culture, institutions, and practices of the Northern Wei would have a tremendous impact on China, for it was the precursor to two great Chinese dynasties - the Sui and the Tang. Professor Scott Pearce, an expert on the Northern Wei, joins us to talk about about this nomadic regime. Contributors Scott Pearce Scott Pearce is a Professor of History at Western Washington University, specializing in the intersection of Chinese and Inner Asian histories in the medieval period with a particular focus on dynasties of Inner Asian origin that ruled northern China during the 4th through the 6th centuries CE. He recently completed a volume on the Northern Wei, a nomadic regime founded by Xianbei peoples, which ruled northern China from 386 to 535 CE. Yiming Ha Yiming Ha is the Rand Postdoctoral Fellow in Asian Studies at Pomona College. His current research is on military mobilization and state-building in China between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries, focusing on how military institutions changed over time, how the state responded to these changes, the disconnect between the center and localities, and the broader implications that the military had on the state. His project highlights in particular the role of the Mongol Yuan in introducing an alternative form of military mobilization that radically transformed the Chinese state. He is also interested in military history, nomadic history, comparative Eurasian state-building, and the history of maritime interactions in early modern East Asia. He received his BA from UCLA, his MPhil from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and his PhD from UCLA. He is also the book review editor for Ming Studies. ANGELA'S SYMPOSIUM 📖 Academic Study on Witchcraft, Paganism, esotericism, magick and the Occult
In this episode, we delve into the rich traditions of Samhain in Contemporary Paganism. Often referred to as the "Witches' New Year," Samhain is celebrated as a time when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead is thinnest, making it ideal for communicating with ancestors and performing powerful rituals of transformation. We explore how Gerald Gardner, the founder of modern Wicca, revived Samhain within the Pagan Wheel of the Year, blending folklore, ceremonial magic, and the seasonal cycles to craft a new esoteric meaning for this ancient festival. We cover the significance of ancestor veneration, divination practices, shadow work during Samhain, and how Pagans set up their altars with symbols of death and renewal. We also look closer at public and private Samhain celebrations, the roles of death deities like Hecate, the Morrigan, and Anubis, and unique rituals such as the Dumb Supper. CONNECT & SUPPORT

The cults of Ahmose-Nefertari and Amenhotep I were vibrant in the west Theban region, and their oracles were essential to solving many disputes. Herihor connected his militarily-achieved kingship to his position in the Karnak priesthood using the ancestor kings as touchstones. Twenty-first Dynasty Theban elites named their children after 18th Dynasty monarchs; Theban High Priest and king Panedjem named a daughter Maatkare, ostensibly after Hatshepsut of the 18th Dynasty, and a son Menkheperre after Thutmose III. Examination of the 20th and 21st Dynasty interventions of the royal mummies from Dra Abu el Naga and the Valley of the Kings indicates these royal corpses were used as sacred effigies of a sort, rewrapped and placed into regilded containers even after they had been stripped of their treasures and golden embellishments. This paper will examine how immigrants and mercenaries were able to move into Theban elite circles by marshaling ancestral connections to power. Men like Herihor and Panedjem, one of them at least of Meshwesh origins, worked within an Upper Egyptian cultural system that put its temple communities of practice before its military and veiled its politics with pious rituals and oracular pronouncements. Such elites had to negotiate their identities and power grabs through the cultural memory of the region's royal ancestors.* Episode 83- Thutmose III and the Veneration of the Royal Ancestors * Cooney, Kathlyn M. 2022. Today's conversation is with Rachel Smith who has been practicing weight management medicine or obesity medicine since 2016. I wanted to have Rachel on the podcast to shed some light on the recent uptick in weight loss medications and offer a balanced opinion about what these medications are all about. Today we talk about the GLP 1 agonists, semaglutide, ozempic…. We dive into the obesity epidemic, and yes it is an epidemic in our country. We talk about the drivers of this, people who have dieted all their lives, what the medications actually do and who benefits the most from them. As a health coach my purpose in having Rachel here for this conversation is really to illuminate the fact that we can't just take a pill and expect our overall health to improve without putting in the effort. The fact remains that lifestyle and the choices we make on a daily basis are still the most important part of this weight loss medication journey. If you take these medications and you don't focus on eating healthy, protein loaded foods often during the day and focusing on exercising and lifting weights you can be end up in a nutritionally depleted state and with incredible muscle loss. That is not sustainable nor healthy yet that is happening all over the place. Rachel and I talk about how to do that and who might be the best candidate for this approach. This conversation is really important. I have to say in the beginning I was in the camp of “these medications are not safe and no one should be on them for just weight loss” but I now feel that there are populations of people who can benefit from their use. Those who have been chronically obese for years, have metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, diabetes, NAFLD. All of these conditions are helped by losing weight but doing it in a way that supports a healthy lifestyle not just taking a pill and not eating. The research still needs to be done about the connection with the gut microbiome and how that shifts during the medication use. We talk about how to find someone who can do this work for those who truly would benefit from it and are focused on the safest method and support. It's not just for someone who wants to lose 20 lbs and can't get there… We also have to consider the mindset and mental health of those who are struggling with weight. Rachel and I didn't talk enough about this but maybe that is another podcast. I have talked about mindset here many times and there is no healthy living without shifting our mindset about what we are capable of and….we are capable of so much more than we could ever imagine. Digging into the “why” around weight gain and lifestyle choices cannot be ignored. The medications here are a jump start but they are not effective if you are not changing your eating habits, exercise, sleep, stress and overall lifestyle. This is so important to take away from this conversation. So who is Rachel Smith? Rachel graduated from the Midwifery Institute at Philadelphia University in 2006. She fell in love with metabolic health and obesity medicine in 2016 after developing a weight management program for a large obstetrical practice. She trained as a health and wellness coach at Duke University, which is how we know one another…then she obtained advanced training in functional medicine and obesity medicine and switched her focus to obesity medicine. Rachel has since added a family nurse practitioner degree from Frontier University as well as a Doctorate in Nursing. As an advance practice nurse Rachel has focused her career on health promotion and patient-centered care working with hormonal and metabolic optimization. Rachel has been the program director for a successful obesity medicine practice in Bradenton for the past 5 years and has now started her own practice in obesity medicine called Aspect Wellness! Check show notes for her links! She is a member of the Obesity Medicine Association, the American Academy of NursePractitioners,

The three discuss the transnational formation of the Jewish far right over the 20th and 21st centuries, the gradual movement of far right actors into the heart of the Israeli state, and the shared investment in territorial maximalism, racial supremacy, and natalism across the Zionist ideological spectrum. Coming up next in RTB 120: Lori and Ajantha sit down with John to synthesize what Murli and Natasha had to say about Ethnonationalism in Indian and in Israel. 1991's Black Robe is probably a movie you've never heard of, but maybe you should. It's one of the rare films that travel back to 17th Century New France to allow us to witness interactions between Indigenous communities and Jesuit missionaries. I watched this film in college and it made an impression on me. So I asked Michael Oberg to come on the pod to talk not only about this film but about how to teach this film as well as point out the complicated relationships between people during the era. This is maybe a bit more cerebral episode than some of the others, and I hope you like it.About our guest:Michael Leroy Oberg, the author of Native America, is Distinguished Professor of History at SUNY-Geneseo and founder of the Geneseo Center for Local and Municipal History, which he directed from 2019 until 2022. In addition to this textbook, he has written the following works: Dominion and Civility: English Imperialism and Native America, 1585-1685 (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1999); Uncas: First of the Mohegans, (Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 2003); Samuel Wiseman's Book of Record: The Official Account of Bacon's Rebellion in Virginia, (Lanham: Lexington Books, 2005); The Head in Edward Nugent's Hand: Roanoke's Forgotten Indians, (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2007); the first edition of Native America; Professional Indian: Eleazer Williams's American Odyssey, (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2015); and Peacemakers: The Iroquois, the United States, and the Treaty of Canandaigua, 1794, (New York: Oxford University Press, 2015). In today's podcast we talk about acupuncture and Ayurvedic medicine to support fertility with Michelle Oravitz. Michelle Oravitz began her career as an architect upon graduating from Philadelphia University. After many years of experiencing missed periods (which traditional doctors could not resolve) and enduring stress at her high demand job in NYC, she decided to go to an acupuncturist named Dr. Li who immediately regulated her cycle. Not only did her symptoms resolve, but she also felt a renewed sense of well being and clarity. She was unable to recognize just how disharmonious she felt until she experienced a new sense of well being that arose from her treatments. When moving to South Florida, she enrolled in an Ayurvedic school which gave her tremendous knowledge about this ancient and rich healing approach. She then enrolled into school to get her master's degree in Oriental Medicine. Michelle believes that if she had not gone to a TCM doctor, she probably would have had a hard time getting pregnant with her two children. This has influenced her to develop a special interest in treating gynecological disorders and infertility. When you start to become more balanced in your body you start to get more clarity in your mind, and you start to see what's good for you and what's not so good for you and then your body and mind become aligned. You start seeing everything differently. It is sometimes difficult to do this because our society dictates that if you have chosen one specific path, like a corporate job for example, and have invested money and energy on that path, then you should stick to it even if it doesn't fulfill your life. The mind is such an important aspect of our health. Sometimes we just get used to the way things are in our lives and we are reluctant to change and to follow our hearts. This is exactly what acupuncture did for Michelle. It gave her this openness to change and to follow her heart. If your body/mind are telling you something, like “I am getting the feeling that food is really related to one's health, maybe I should eat healthier” then you should listen to it and start making the necessary changes towards that direction. If you recognize that there's something about that job or that career or that routine that's harming your health, then you need to act on it and make the shift to a new environment that feels good for you, otherwise you will not be healthy and you will not be able to enjoy life to the fullest. There is so much research coming out related to women's health and fertility, new natural treatments, supplements, herbs, and nutrients to help women with fertility that there is always something new to learn and to try. Talking about alignment we can see that if a person is in a stressful environment or if they are not aligned in the mind-body connection, maybe because they don't really like their job or their relationship, or are under so much constant stress, then sometimes that is part of why the pregnancy is not happening. We want to balance our hormones and we want to balance our microbiome and neurotransmitters but if there is something not working on the mind-body connection then it is much more difficult to heal. A very interesting aspect of Chinese medicine is that it works by acknowledging connection. Everything that happens around us (the universe, the sun, the stars, the moon, etc.) reflect in the rhythms of life and in our bodies. We are walking living ecosystems that thrive on balance. When something in our bodies is out of balance, we start to see health problems. Our bodies could have too much heat or too much cold or not enough blood production in a day-to day basis. There are so many different things that can cause the same symptom. We must look at the pattern, we look at the underlying root cause and then we can solve the problem. The human body is incredibly intelligent, but it is a living organism, and it requires attention and care, it is not a machine, and even machines require attention and care. If we do not give it what it needs to be in balance it is going to eventually give you some signs and signals and disharmonious feelings that something is not right. Acupuncture is all about reaching that balance in your body and mind. It works on our energy as its flowing to feed all the different systems and get into different organs. And once you give the body what it needs then it removes the blockages in order to move that energy across all systems and creates that homeostasis state where it begins to heal. In this modern world we are so used to have everything we think we need readily available for us, like fruits and vegetables that don't grow in our regions depending on the seasons, or artificial light disrupting our inner resting cycles and hormones, or not going out because it's too cold so we don't get sunlight, all these things make our bodies go out of balance and we suffer the consequences in our health. We also forget that our Earth has all the necessary nutrients and herbs to keep us as healthy as we can be, and that there are alternative ways instead of the traditional western medicine. For example, there is a lot of research showing the benefits of Ashwaganda in reducing stress, which also causes fertility issues, or Phosphatidylserine to reset our Cortisol levels which help regulate our mood and sleep patterns. In these alternative treatments it is important to know that there is no “one pill fits all” it has to be about the person, his unique body and his unique response to external factors. In this modern world we sometimes forget that excessive amounts of stress are probably one of the main root causes of serious health issues like heart attacks, cancer, dementia, infertility, etc. We have to recognize our own patterns and our unique bodies' response to stress, so we can control it and not the other way around. Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it
In 1776 a massive British fleet of more than 400 ships carrying tens of thousands of soldiers arrived outside New York Harbor. Many of these soldiers were German, hired from their princes by the British government. Americans then and now have called them Hessians. For the next seven years, these German soldiers marched, fought, and suffered seemingly everywhere in eastern North America, from the walls of Quebec City to the sandy beaches of Pensacola Bay. When the British army left, many Germans were left behind–both the living, deserters who had found new lives or others who settled with Loyalists in Canada, and the dead. Just this summer, on the battlefield of Fort Mercer, across from Philadelphia, an archaeological dig discovered a grave with the remains of thirteen German soldiers–and that just a fraction of the Germans who died in that place on October 22nd, 1777. With me to describe the Hessians and their American odyssey is Friederike Baer, Associate Professor of History at Pennsylvania State University, Abington College, and author of the new book Hessians: German Soldiers in the American Revolutionary War. For Further Investigation Friederike writes, "for those interested in researching their Hessian ancestors, try this database of records at Hessian State Archives, Marburg, Germany and the Johannes Schwalm Historical Association (which also publishes an annual journal) A digitized collection of maps related to the Revolutionary war in the Hessian State Archives Marburg, Germany (collections 28 and 29) "A classic to read is" Edward J. Bio:A reference in the samba world, the musician, arranger and educator, Gabriel Policarpo, stands out for his creative and virtuosic way of playing the repique. At the age of 13, he joined the school in his neighborhood in Niterói, G.R.E.S Unidos do Viradouro, and soon took the place of 1st repique and soloist of the school. In 2015 he composed the drum masters commission for the special group of the carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Their first album featured Yamandú Costa, Nicolas Krassik, Carlos Malta, Marcos Suzano, Mestre Ciça and the African singer Ashimba. Since then, as an educator, he has performed on different stages and universities around the world, including The Juilliard School of Music, The Philadelphia University of Arts, City University London and Copenhagen Rytmisk Konservatorium. In addition to having founded the Escola de Ritmos, Bloco e Orquestra Batuquebato, an active bloco known in the streets of Rio de Janeiro.
