Brittany Davis is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer who is truly like no other. Their exceptional songwriting began, capturing the attention of Stone Gossard and his Seattle-based record label Loosegroove Records. In conversation with host Anne Erickson, Brittany dives deep into their relationship with music, themes that went into their debut album Image Issues, their relationship with Stone Gossard, and shares some wisdom beyond their years about identity and why staying true to yourself is the most important thing. Brittany Davis - "Sepricon" from the 2024 album Image Issues on Loosegroove Records Last we spoke with Seattle artist Brittany Davis, they had released an EP via Loosegroove Records, the label ran by Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard (who is also Davis's bandmate in the side project, Painted Shield). Now, they've returned with their debut full-length album, titled Image Issues, out March 1st on Loosegroove. It's an ambitious 26-track, concept-driven release, interspersed with spoken word pieces by Davis, and with deeply personal lyrics touching on their "discrimination as a Black, non-binary, blind musician, to traumatic family experiences touching on abuse, gun violence, and the prison system." The LP was co-produced by Josh Evans (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Brandi Carlile), with Gossard's full support. (“He is everywhere in spirit and conception and love and vision,” Evans told Spin Magazine.) Davis describes today's Song of the Day as "definitely born to funk...to soul funk! The record is an ode to James Brown and filled with thoughtless greatness...there really is no rhyme or reason to it...all primal instinct." James and the Cold Gun - "Something to Say" from their self-titled 2023 album on Loosegroove Records Often referred to as “South Wales' loudest group,” the Cardiff, UK-based garage rockers James and the Cold Gun share their self-titled debut album via Seattle's own Loosegroove Records, the label owned by Stone Gossard (Pearl Jam) & Regan Hagar (Malfunkshun, Brad, Satchel). Gossard describes the band as "a shot of pure adrenaline," and invited the group to open for Pearl Jam at their Hyde Park show. Frontman James Joseph calls the new LP, "a no frills rock and roll ripper recorded ourselves in the garage where we first started jamming as a band, we think it's a great introduction to what we're about at our core, loud, energetic guitar rock." We also talk about the development of high school bands in Seattle during the 1980s, which later gave rise to successful Seattle bands like Pearl Jam or Guns n Roses. Tigercub “Tigercub steps up to claim the front runner status as the new heavy. They emerge from Brighton UK under the 7 foot frame of Mr. Jamie Hall and his Tigercub.” ~ Stone Gossard Revolver announced that Loosegroove Records has signed Tigercub c/w US Headlines dates in conjunction with their US & Canada shows supporting Clutch & EYEHATEGOD. The signing of Tigercub on Loosegroove Records marks the reboot of the influential indie label that Gossard founded back in 1994 with Regan Hagar. Significantly Gossard and Hagar signed Queens of the Stone Age and released the band's debut album in 1998, providing a foundation to build to where they are now. “When we discovered Tigercub, it felt like the right time to start Loosegroove back up,” says Hagar. Stone adds “It's almost 23 years to date that Queens of the Stone Age debuted at Mercury Lounge in NYC. And now Tigercub makes their Big Apple debut in the same club on April 16th. This is just the beginning for this incredibly talented group from Brighton UK to enlighten us Yanks to the sound of the new heavy!” Tigercub's latest album ‘As Blue As Indigo' was met with rave reviews from metal, rock and alt press internationally, establishing the band's genre-pushing originality. Written over two years, ‘As Blue As Indigo' champions introspections drawing on the subjectivity of colour, paired with masterclass songwriting, mind-bending arrangements constructed with boundary-pushing production. https://open.spotify.com/artist/6ekYAO2D1JkI58CF4uRRqw https://music.apple.com/gb/artist/tigercub/658911023 https://tigercubtigercub.bandcamp.com/music https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIq8QZNx4Ge6rbBejiSwQBw https://tigercubtigercub.us7.list-manage.com/subscribe?id=d9fefe5a42&u=5adb5e49f2c09c28ec6402fa3 Clutch CLUTCH shares more in common with The Grateful Dead, Rush, and the Allman Brothers than their heavy riffs and heady twists-of-phrase might suggest. Because like those bands, the supporters who adore CLUTCH are there for the experience, community, and authentic connection. To love CLUTCH is to feel a sense of ownership, membership, and belonging. A worldwide cabal of fans and critics cherish the band's dense and diverse catalog of underground classics, released through major labels, indies, and since 2009, Clutch's own Weathermaker imprint. Sunrise On Slaughter Beach, the band's thirteenth studio album, is a slamming summary of everything that makes the band great and another giant leap forward into career longevity. New bangers like “Red Alert (Boss Metal Zone),” “Nosferatu Madre,” “Skeletons on Mars,” “Jackhammer Our Names,” and “Mercy Brown” take their rightful place alongside the classics. Sunrise On Slaughter Beach is the natural culmination of what Clutch began as teenagers in the early ‘90s. Sunrise On Slaughter Beach introduces some “firsts” into the Clutch canon: vibraphone (from Gaster), theremin (J. Robbins), and female backup vocals from singers Deborah Bond and Frenchie Davis. The album's nine songs are a diverse ride, destined to please longtime fans and intrigue newcomers alike. This week's guests are Brad/Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard & Brad drummer Regan Hagar. Seattle's Brittany Davis has released a debut EP on Pearl Jam Guitarist Stone Gossard's label, Loosegroove Records. Davis was born blind and started recording music around the age of 13 when they were homeless. They talk about their musical journey, reflecting on the past two years through music, collaborating with Gossard and addressing blindness in a song. “As much as blindness as disability is romanticized, nah dude, that stuff ain't romantic. That stuff impacts you in ways that a lot of people don't think about,” Davis says. Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/ See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This particular episode was a long time coming, for a variety of reasons. Josh Freese has had the type of career - and has the type of personality - that has made me want to interview him for a lot longer than I've had the capacity to actually conduct interviews. He might have played with everyone from Sting to Guns 'N' Roses to Nine Inch Nails to The Offspring to Dweezil Zappa to Juliana Hatfield to Kelly Clarkson, but if you've been involved in the punk rock scene at all for the last three decades, he's still Josh from The Vandals. Or, for a small number of us, Josh from Viva Death. Anyway, Josh just put out a new solo album, "Just A Minute: Vol. 1" - it was written and recorded from his home studio during quarantine. It's twenty songs in, you guessed it, twenty minutes, and it was released on Loosegroove Records, a label owned by Pearl Jam's Stone Gossard and Brad's Regan Hagar. It's wild: some of the songs are expertly crafted and fully thought-out punk rock songs and some of them sound almost like the descent into madness that a lot of us experienced when locked in our houses for an indeterminate amount of time. We cover a lot of ground over the course of 75 or so minutes: Danny Elfman, The Vandals, Stone Gossard and Pearl Jam, living in Long Beach, playing with Sting, Queens Of The Stone Age, setting up a home recording studio a decade ago and actually finding the time to use it during a pandemic, and a lot more. We also talked, obviously, about "Just A Minute: Vol. 1" and probably spent more time talking about "Just A Minute: Vol. 2," which should hopefully be out during the spring of '22. Josh Freese is, hands down, a drumming great. From his work with Guns n Roses, to Nine Inch Nails, to the Offspring, to his continued work with DEVO, Josh has remained busy. And, apparently, a little downtime during the pandemic was just too much, so Josh wrote and recorded two new albums of music. And each song on these albums is only one minute long. Just A Minute Vol. 1 is available this Friday, October 29th. For more information, follow Josh on Instagram, or follow Loosegroove Records on Facebook.

“Introspection and Awareness" The French born drummer Greg Gilmore landed in Seattle as a young man and what better way to punctuate those formative teenage years than with a punk band? Joining forces with John Conte, Todd Fleishman, and Duff McKagan Gilmore and his pals played speedbag punk that fell somewhere between the Clash and The Germs. They became local favorites, opened for DOA in Vancouver and Seattle and thanks to a quick studio session, recorded seven tracks which are now seeing the light of day for the first time. Released on Loosegroove Records which is owned by Stone Gossard of Pearl Jam and Regan Hagar of Satchel and Brad, the band’s set is called The Living 1982 and of the document, Gossard says, is "a reminder that the Living are ground zero for the Seattle sound.” The songs are fast and dynamic and played with a frenzied punk spirit and youthful momentum. The idea to put these songs out came from Gilmore, who actually unearthed the recordings. He says: “The Living was the beginning of all things Seattle for me --a turning point in my life. I joined a band and a community. These guys are still my brothers. I've cherished these recordings since the days we made them. This record is a fantastic document of a loaded moment. I love it.” Well, in music years, The Living really were only around in music years for about a moment. After the band, broke up, Duff and Gilmore landed in Ten Minute Warning, then the two pals went to LA. McKagan ended up joining Guns N’ Roses and Gilmore headed back to Seattle where he played briefly with Skin Yard before co-founded Mother Love Bone. After the death of Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood, Gilmore went on to collaborate with Seattle producing legend Jack Endino for a series of albums. He also played with Land, Doghead, and Steve Fisk. As a drummer, Gilmore plays with thoughtful muscle. He’s an introspective guy and his playing has the perfect blend of cerebral athleticism. We talk about that introspection here among a lot of other things: travel, friendships, self-awareness, intellectualizing ourselves in and out of enjoyment and the ins and outs of being social. https://www.instagram.com/loosegrooverecords linktr.ee/loosegroove www.alexgreenonline.com Instagram: @emberseditor Twitter: @emberspodcast
Before Seattle's Duff McKagan went on to become the bassist for Guns N’ Roses and before Seattle’s Mother Love Bone started influencing the city’s grunge sound, there was The Living. It was an early 80’s Seattle punk band made up of a teenage Duff McKagan on guitar, Greg Gilmore (of Mother Love Bone) on drums, Todd Fleischman on bass, and John Conte as the band’s frontman. Seattle’s Loosegroove Records, which is co-run by Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard, has just released The Living’s album, titled ‘1982,' for the very first time. “It’s Seattle hardcore, pre-grunge [...] it really showcases who the real king of grunge is and I think it might be Duff and Greg and Todd and John,” Gossard says. For this episode, drummer Greg Gilmore talks about the themes on the record and how it's finally seeing the light of day. Donate to Seattle Theatre Group at http://stgpresents.org/donate Greg Gilmore is a Seattle musician. Greg's first Seattle band was called The Living, turns our they're about to finally be a big deal around here. There is a long lost recording being released on vinyl thanks to Loosegroove Records later this month. Greg would also go on to play in Ten Minute Warning and MotherLoverBone. He stopped by to the Moore Theatre talk to us about his recollections of what the music scene was like in Seattle at the end of the 70's, early 80's and into the 90's. Geoff and Steve have both known Greg for more than twenty years, but, rarely is it the time or place, out in bars or at clubs (or even on ferries) to speak about true experiences and perspectives. At two hours into our conversation, Greg said he was just getting warmed up... and we couldn't have been happier to oblige. Hope you enjoy! On April 16th Regan Hagar and Stone Gossard, atop their newly rebooted Loosegroove records will offer, for your listening pleasure, the long lost recordings of The Living. A band that played around the NW for about a year in 1982 before it went the way of most bands. It morphed, into something else. Luckily, in that year, the boys would go up to American Music in Fremont WA and lay to tape, what they'd been up to. Had it come out then, that recording would have been the first time the "world" would hear Greg Gilmore on drums, and, at a salty 17 years old, Duff Mckagan, making his debut as an absolute monster of a creative driving force. Seattle Today was lucky enough to have, both Greg, and then Duff come to The Moore Theatre to talk with us about that period in their lives. We were also blessed with a visit from the Mighty Blaine Cook, who would be the singer in the band that both Greg and Duff would follow up The Living with, Ten Minute Warning.
