The uncomfortable topic no one is talking about. Or, not too many people are talking about because it can be awkward and weird like everything else in life. But it's so important for women to understand. And, there are some great recovery revelations in this episode that have nothing to do with life stages or being a man or a woman – but have everything to do with getting sober and living the life you really want. You may know today's guest from the To 50 & Beyond podcast. When she quit drinking at forty-five, she felt like she had been run over by a truck for years. She was doing the back and forth, back and forth thing, and she finally decided to quit drinking after thirty years of a close relationship with alcohol – finally tired of settling for that life. Lori Massicot loves to talk about the disadvantage of just a small amount of alcohol. From sleepless nights, waking up in the morning fuzzy and hungover, to ending the day with another drink even when you promised yourself you weren't going to drink today. She found herself in mid-life, stressed out, she didn't like her work, had no confidence, and knew her life had to change. And if you aren't a 12-step person, you're definitely going to love the inspiration and motivation that comes with Lori's story because she had a different path, is respectful of the program, and has amazing and fulfilling sobriety.   Links mentioned in this episode:  Insights Into Addiction and 12-Step Programs Today with Angela Pugh:  https://www.lorimassicot.com/to-50-and-beyond-podcast/283 Lori Massicot:  lorimassicot.com Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/addictionunlimited Want to work with Angela? 15 Signs you need to Take a Break from Alcohol with Lori Massicot

My guest this week is Sobriety Coach Lori Massicot. Lori was on the podcast back in 2021 and that episode was one of our most popular ones with more than 2,000 downloads.  We were talking about why women should quit drinking in mid-life – that seemed to strike a chord with many of our listeners - Here is a link to that podcast  I invited Lori back so that we could highlight the signs… The signs that we are drinking too much..  Signs that most of us ignore for as long as we can! Trying (and failing) to moderate has to be a big one… a moderate drinker is someone who might have a glass of champagne at a wedding or a glass of wine with a special meal… alcohol isn't even on their radar! Once we've crossed a line with our drinking there is no moderating, no going back – just going forward and creating an alcohol free life that we love. Creating Rules around our drinking is another classic sign – it's a sign that we know its getting out of control and that we need to rein it in… to avoid having to give it up altogether which is the ultimate nightmare for most drinkers! Having no “off” switch – however good our intentions are once we've had that first glass of wine all the bets are off – as the saying goes “one is too many and a thousand isn't enough” We drink for the buzz – personally I wasn't bothered if I was drinking a fine wine or a bottle of plonk – for me it was all about the buzz – I used to drink for the way it made me feel rather than the taste. Waking up at 3am wracked with anxiety – of course that's when the alcohol is leaving our system so if we've been numbing out to avoid thinking about a problem it will reappear with a vengeance at 3am. Drinking alcohol is like pouring gasoline on our anxiety! The shift from drinking to socialise to drinking to self medicate. The normal timeframe is about 20 years… so many woman drink to socialise in their 30's and 30's but then as the demands of juggling a career and childcare pile up they rely on it to cope with their stress. If you worry about the prospect of having to quit drinking one day – if that's your worst nightmare – if you can't even imagine what your life would be like without alcohol then that's a sure sign you need to take a break Along with self medicating with alcohol comes the habit of drinking alone – a sure sign that it's moved away from the fun place to the place of numbing out the strains of the day. You heard Lori saying that she had hangovers that lasted 2 or 3 days – as we get older our bodies struggle to cope with excessive drinking. We have less water in our bodies and become more susceptible to the dangers such as breast cancer. Finding yourself in the Groundhog Day routine of daily drinking is another sign – waking up feeling under par and vowing not to drink that evening. By 5pm you're feeling quite perky and well up for a glass of wine!  If we drink every evening we spend our days in withdrawal from alcohol – that's why that first glass of wine tastes so good! Increasing level of tolerance is another warning sign.  When I started drinking I could get a nice buzz going with a couple of glasses of wine but towards the end of my drinking career I could drink two bottles of wine and not feel a thing! Being very health conscious – doing the yoga, eating organic yet working your way through a bottle of wine in the evening. It's as if the alcohol is the last piece of the puzzle - although we know if our hearts it's not good for us we just can't let it go.. Taking a strategic approach to your drinking is a bit of a give away – I would plan my week on a Monday morning and make sure that I hadn't scheduled anything too taxing for the morning after a night out! You worry about your drinking!  If it's on your mind then take action – don't torment yourself any longer – go to tribesober.com and hit join our tribe.  You don't even need to quit drinking straight away – just listen and learn and get inspired by people who've done it. Finally if you're listening to this podcast and still drinking that's a bit of a sign that you're sober curious… so well done if that's you - carry on listening and learning! What should you expect to feel and do and experience in your first year of sobriety?  You've probably heard that the first 30 days sober are the absolute hardest and that hitting the one year milestone is big and important, but what comes in between?  Your first year sober can be a complex, emotional rollercoaster. You'll feel immense pride and joy and also uncertainty and vulnerability. It's beautiful and hard, tender and transformative.  And it can be really helpful to know what to expect in your first year, from people who have been there before you.  I asked my friend Lori Massicot, midlife sobriety coach and host of the To 50 And Beyond Podcast, to join me in talking about our own experiences and memories of our first year of sobriety. We dive into what we thought, felt and did between the last day we drank, the big 30, 60 and 90-day sober milestones, how we felt at 6 months alcohol-free and what we did to celebrate hitting one year of sobriety and our first “soberversary” (yes…that's a thing!) 3 Ways I Can Support You In Drinking Less + Living More Join The Sobriety Starter Kit, the only sober coaching course designed specifically for busy women.  My proven, step-by-step sober coaching program will teach you exactly how to stop drinking — and how to make it the best decision of your life.   I learned recently that only 10% of podcasters manage to publish more than 100 episodes so today I wanted to mark the fact that the Tribe Sober podcast is still going strong after 150 episodes! Yes it's hard work getting out a weekly episode but it's also been such a pleasure connecting with some fabulous guests and of course getting feedback from listeners all over the world. I've taken a deep dive into our podcast archives and highlighted the top ten most popular episodes At number 10 we have 3 podcasts with 1,700 downloads! 10. The Happy Brain with Loretta Breuning  That was Dr Loretta Breuning – author the Happy Brain.  I always learn a lot from my guests and my conversation with Loretta led me to a personal lightbulb moment which actually changed the advice we give to our community. It's common to experience a low mood in early sobriety – a spell of anhedonia. It certainly happened to me so I discussed this with Loretta She taught me that we don't have to just grit our teeth and get through this difficult patch – there is a way out! A way to trigger our happy chemicals and banish those early sobriety blues It's fascinating stuff so do have a listen to the interview – Tribe Sober podcast episode 55 on Apple podcasts or via this link 10. “Take a Break” Another episode that came in at 10th place with 1,700 listens was the episode called “Take a Break” – 3 Tribe Sober members talking about the benefits of taking a break from the booze. We believe in Challenges here at Tribe Sober - every year we run 2 #Sober66 Challenges as well as our Dry January Fundraiser. On this episode we hear from 3 ladies who did a 66 day Sober Spring - why did they sign up?  what was it like?  what tips do they have?  Have a listen to Claire, Helena and Pam and if you're inspired you can go to tribesober.com and sign up for the next #Sober66 which starts on 20th March Find this episode on Apple podcasts Tribe Sober episode 75 or via this link 10. Rebranding Sobriety with Susan Christina  The third episode at number 10 is my interview with the fabulous Susan Christina from Hola Sober. Susan Christina is on a mission to rebrand sobriety and make alcohol free living as attractive and glamorous as we thought drinking was She's an advocate for the modern recovery movement and wants women to take back their power!  Susan Christina publishes a gorgeous 100 page online magazine call Hola Sober, packed with features and inspiration – I'll put the link in the shownotes https://linktr.ee/holasober The episode with Susan Christina is called Rebranding Sobriety – episode 67 on Apple or via this link  8.  Casey joins up the dots... between drinking and anxiety Next up is an interview with Sobriety Coach Casey Mcguire Davidson with 1,800 downloads Like me Casey was caught in the corporate workhard/playhard culture as well as the mommyjuice trend…using alcohol to cope with stress and anxiety and becoming  more dependent over the years… But somehow we both found our way out of that trap and now we are finding joy in helping people to do the same  We talked about the strong women we come across in our sober communities – and how many of us managed to hold it all together through the drinking years. Once we are liberated from the shackles of alcohol addiction there is no stopping us and we go on to achieve great things.  We agreed that yes Sobriety is definitely a Superpower! Catch Casey on Tribe Sober podcast episode 66 on Apple or via this link 7. Is your Lizard Brain the Boss with Staci Danford Coming in at number 7 is neuroscientist Staci Danford which also has had 1,800 listens Staci is a neuroscientist who loves working with the sober community.  In this episode she shares some really practical and useful information about our brain. Staci explained how our primitive lizard brain will go on autopilot unless we intervene – she calls her Lizard Brain Earl and calls him out if he tries to hijack her behaviour! She confirmed that our #Sober66 Challenge is long enough to create a new neural pathway to change our drinking patterns She also said that the “secret sauce” of our Challenges is the community support Our next #Sober66 Challenge starts on 20th March so just go to tribesober.com and you'll see the sign up box on the homepage You can catch Staci's episode on Apple podcasts, episode 57 or via this link  6.  Why we need to ditch the drink in mid-life with Lori Massicot Next up in our Top Ten is Lori Massicot, also with 1,800 listens. Lori Massicot a midlife sobriety coach. I discovered Lori when I found her podcast – it's called “to 50 and beyond” – it's a podcast aimed at women in mid-life where she highlights the beauty of aging and the freedom that comes along with alcohol free life. I was 63 when I finally ditched the booze so as you can imagine we had a great conversation about how giving up alcohol is one of the best things we can do for ourselves as we get older. Let's remember that 20% of social drinkers WILL become dependent over the years That's exactly what happened to most of our Tribe members who are now busy supporting each other and changing their habits So if you want to improve your health and increase  your happiness just go to tribesober.com and hit join our tribe. Catch Lori's episode on Apple podcasts episode 72 or via this link 5. My Relationship with Alcohol with Eusebius McKaiser  Holding down the number 5 spot with 1800 downloads is South African journalist and broadcaster Eusebius McKaiser He signed up for our Dry January Fundraiser a few years ago and much to his surprise he's maintained his sobriety.  We first met when I was on his radio show reading out my Goodbye to Alcohol Letter.  A goodbye letter is a cathartic and powerful ritual that can help us draw a line under our drinking years.  During our conversation Eusebius shared the benefits he is experiencing and explained how he has substituted different kinds of music for alcohol - to stimulate the right mood when he is writing. You can it via this link or on Apple podcasts episode 29 Eusebius and I also recorded another Tribe Sober podcast episode together – called Busting Sobriety Myths – episode 77 on Apple podcasts or via this link   4.  Why we get hangxiety with William Porter  At number 4 with 2000 downloads is another podcast about anxiety!  – title was “Why we get Hangxiety and my guest was William Porter.    We talked about "hangxiety" and how it's caused by chemical changes in our brain - when it becomes over-sensitised If you drink a bottle of wine every night then your brain will take the first glass as a signal that the rest of the bottle is coming! That's why moderation is so difficult - and it's exhausting as we are thinking about it all the time Dependency happens once we learn (consciously or subsconsciously) that another drink will quell the anxiety caused by the first FAB is responsible for many people falling off the wagon as they think they can now have "just one" - which is not sustainable William also explained that it's a complete myth that alcohol helps you sleep - the truth is that it ruins our sleep! This conversation is on episode 50 on Apple podcasts or you can access it via this link 3.  How I ditched the drink with Clare Pooley  At number 3 we have the fabulous Clare Pooley with 2,100 downloads Clare is the author of “Sober Diaries” and a wonderful example of how your dreams can come true when you ditch the booze.  Her sober blog not only helped her to stay on track but it attracted a publishing deal which led to the sober diaries – she then went on to write two further novels.  Her childhood dream was to be an author and now she is! CLAIRE's TOP TIP - she reconfigured her day - went to bed at 7pm (to avoid evening drinking) and got up at 5am feeling great! As cooking the evening meal was a big temptation for her she cooked it in the morning and heated it up in the evening Her blog - the obstacle course went viral and is essential reading in early sobriety – I'll put the link in the shownotes Clare's key message in her blog is to keep going however hard it gets - stopping and starting is the hardest way and means you are doing the hardest bit – over and over The episode is number 39 in Apple podcasts or via this link  2.  How I quit drinking and started a tribe with Janet Gourand At number 2 is my story with 2,200 downloads I talk about my long struggle with alcohol – how I nearly drowned by passing out in my bath at the age of 25 and carried on drinking How I got breast cancer - and carried on drinking How a "walking, talking blackout" made me (finally) ditch the drink I talk about my quest for sobriety, my failure as an AA member and how I finally got sober.  I share my motivation for founding Tribe Sober and read out my Goodbye to Alcohol Letter. This was the very first episode of the Tribe Sober podcast so is episode one in Apple podcasts – or via this link People often find podcasts by googling key words so the fact that our most popular podcast was called “How to Stop Binge Drinking” would indicate that a lot of people find themselves without an off switch once they start drinking. I certainly fell in that category – a couple of glasses every evening and probably a binge once a week. If you've ever wondered exactly how much you have to drink to constitute a binge you may be surprised to learn that:- Binge drinking is defined as consuming 4 or more drinks on one occasion for women or 5 or more drinks on one occasion for men Australian sobriety coach Kathryn Elliott was a binge drinker 1.  How to Stop Binge Drinking with Kathryn Elliott  Kathryn would be in a cycle – go for it, recover, go for it, recover She didn't really see this as a “problem” even when she started having blackouts at 16 – some blackouts which involved driving If you listen to last weeks Tribe Sober episode with Professor Nutt you can hear him explaining the science behind blackouts – and the fact that blackouts can actually lead to brain damage! She could go for weeks without drinking and challenges like Dry January were easy for her but she would always see these dry periods as permission to binge before and afterwards! As Kathryn looks back on those short periods of abstinence she realises they did nothing to help her understand her binge drinking habit Women need to understand that binge drinking is particularly dangerous as it can take up to a month for our liver to recover from a heavy session. We tend to think that once the hangover has gone we can start drinking again but that just piles more damage on top of the existing damage. When you're stopping drinking it's pretty normal to focus on what you're giving because alcohol is involved in most of your social activities, hobbies and relationships.     When I was a ‘red wine girl' alcohol was a part of cooking dinner, evenings on the couch, date nights, girls nights, work happy hours, Sunday brunches, afternoons at the ballpark, vacations and everything in between.    In order to create a better life without alcohol it's important to add new things to your life that bring you peace, happiness and pleasure when you are removing alcohol.   Lori Massicot, midlife sobriety coach and host of the To 50 And Beyond Podcast, has joined me to talk about how to create a better life without alcohol, how to use your time away from alcohol as a period of discovery, why setting boundaries will help you find time to explore new hobbies, and so much more!   For full show notes and resources mentioned in the episode, head to www.hellosomedaycoaching.com/112   Ready to drink less + live more? Tribe Sober - inspiring an alcohol free life!

When I started podcasting almost 2 years ago I wasn't sure that I was going to be able to stick at it.  Finding guests, interviewing guests and then editing the conversation was pretty time consuming.  Then I read that 60% of podcasters give up after less than 10 episodes which seemed like a challenge!  Through this podcast Tribe Sober has connected with people from all over the world and our membership is becoming more and more international! So next week we celebrate our 100th episode so a huge thank you to our listeners who have helped us to get this far!  If you are new to the podcast then welcome – and if you've been with us from the start then thank you!  In either case we'd love you to leave a review. So this week I've delved into our podcast download stats and highlighted the most popular podcasts – our top ten! In this Episode At 10th place with 1150 downloads is Episode number 72 (released in December 2021) – it's called “Why We Need to Ditch the Drink in Mid Life” – my guest was Lori Massicot who has a podcast herself called “to 50 and beyond” – it's a podcast aimed at women in mid-life where she highlights the beauty of aging and the freedom that comes along with alcohol free life. She on a mission to raise awareness towards the life changing impact of sobriety as we age and had me guesting on her podcast as an example of someone who ditched the drink later in life. You can find that on episode 182 of her podcast. At 9th place with 1192 downloads is Episode 67 (released in October 2021) we have an episode called “Rebranding Sobriety” with the fabulous Susan Christina.  She's on a mission to make alcohol free living as attractive and glamorous as we thought drinking was!  Susan shares her own story of recovery and talks about the “drinking train” that many women board and pointed out that it was only travelling one way – the way of increasing dependence, rehab and for some people it's unfortunately travelling to disease and death.  At number 8 with 1206 downloads we have episode 81 (released January 2022) called “Take a Break” from the booze.  We believe in Challenges here at Tribe Sober and every year we run our Sober Spring Challenge - and then another one in January.  On this podcast we hear from 3 ladies who did Sober Spring 2021 - why did they sign up?  what was it like?  what tips do they have?  If you are listening to this and decide you'd like to do a challenge then just go to tribesober.com and hit Join Our Tribe and we'll put you on our 30 day starter challenge for new members. At number 7 with 1215 downloads was “Coping with Cravings” (released January 2021) - my interview with South African natural health expert Mary Ann Shearer.  Both of her parents were alcoholics yet she became passionate about health and has published a bestselling book called The Natural Way.  Mary Ann is a woman before her time and was advocating veganism thirty years ago! She advised people who have stopped drinking to satisfy their cravings by eating fresh fruit not chocolates or sweets  Our bodies need glucose and eating fresh fruit satisfies the craving for alcohol – we offer this as standard advice in our community as many many people battle with those cravings for sweets when they stop drinking. Mary Ann explained the damage that alcohol does to our endocrine system - and how it makes menopause much worse At number 6 with 1279 downloads was Neuroscientist Staci Danfield – released in August 2021 that episode is called “Is you Lizard Brain the Boss?”  She explained that our brain tricks us into thinking that alcohol is making us happy but in fact it is a depressant – if you've been drinking for years then the alcohol will have altered the balance of your brain which is why you become increasingly dependent. When we understand how our brains work we can work with it – and that's when the magic will happen – a great analogy is to think of how we use our computers – we work with programs that are installed in our computers – not against them! Understanding our brains means that we can understand ourselves better and see what we are gaining by ditching the drink – we need to create a “pattern interruptor” At number 5 we have episode 66 with 1318 downloads (released in October 2021) -  “Anxiety and Alcohol” was the topic and my guest was Casey McGuire Davidson.  Casey went to doctors and therapists about her anxiety and insomnia – most of which was caused by alcohol but she was in denial about her drinking and just didn't CONNECT THE DOTS Like many of us Casey started making rules – in fact Casey and I had a whole conversation about the rules we used to make that you can find on her podcast (Hello Someday – episode 77 )  The reason we make these rules of course is that we are still trying to moderate as we can't imagine our life without it – having to give up completely is our worst nightmare – whereas with hindsight both Casey and myself can say that giving up completely was the best thing we ever did! She eventually hired a Sober Coach and checked in with her every single day – because she was sick and tired of being sick and tired. Episode 50 is at number 4 with 1510 downloads.  - another podcast about anxiety! That's why moderation is so difficult - and it's exhausting as we are thinking about it all the time Dependency happens once we learn (consciously or subsconsciously) that another drink will quell the anxiety caused by the first FAB is responsible for many people falling off the wagon as they think they can now have "just one" - which is not sustainable He explained why it's a complete myth that alcohol helps you sleep - the truth is that it ruins our sleep! At number 3 we have the fabulous Clare Pooley with 1587 downloads.  The episode is number 39 and was released in April 2021 - called “My Top Life Hack”   Clare is a wonderful example of how your dreams can come true when you ditch the booze.  Her sober blog not only helped her to stay on track but it attracted a publishing deal which led to the sober diaries – she then went on to write TAP and is about to publish a second novel.  Her childhood dream was to be an author and now she is! CLAIRE's TOP TIP - she reconfigured her day - went to bed at 7pm (to avoid evening drinking) and got up at 5am feeling great! As cooking the evening meal was a big temptation for her she cooked it in the morning and heated it up in the evening Like many of us she had a major low in early sobriety - she calls this "the wall" and believes it's our brain chemistry adjusting Her blog - the obstacle course went viral and is essential reading in early sobriety Clare's key message in the blog is to keep going however hard it gets - stopping and starting is the hardest way Clare also said it was essential to "find your tribe" and recommended tribesober.com At number 2 we have Eusebius McKaiser with 1599 downloads. South African journalist talking about his relationship with alcohol.  Eusebius signed up for our Dry January Challenge a fewyears ago and to his surprise maintained his sobriety.  We first met when I was on his radio show reading out my Goodbye to Alcohol Letter.  We recommend writing a GTA letter on the basis that for some of us alcohol is like an abusive lover we  need to get it out of our lives.  A goodbye letter is a cathartic and powerful ritual that can help us draw a line under our drinking years.  Go to ts.com, hit inspiration and hit GTA letters to read the letters written by tribe members. Eusebius shared benefits he is experiencing and explained how he has substituted different kinds of music for alcohol - to stimulate the right mood when he is writing. Eusebius wrote a blog for our website called "Sober Diary Reflections" - you can read it here and we also recorded another Tribe Sober podcast together – called Busting Sobriety Myths – episode 77. At number is my story "How I quit drinking and started a tribe!" with 1675 downloads Just beating Eusebius by a mere 76 downloads is my story!  I can't claim too much credit as this was the very first episode – released way back on my 5th Soberversary in May 2020 – episode 1!  In it I talk about my long struggle with alcohol – how I nearly drowned by passing out in my bath at the age of 25 and carried on drinking How I got breast cancer - and carried on drinking How a "walking, talking blackout" made me (finally) ditch the drink I talk about my quest for sobriety, my failure as an AA member and how I finally got sober.  I share my motivation for founding Tribe Sober and read out my Goodbye to Alcohol Letter. Tribe Sober - inspiring an alcohol-free life! This weeks podcast guest is the lovely Lori Massicot a midlife sobriety coach. I discovered Lori when I found her podcast – it's called “to 50 and beyond” – it's a podcast aimed at women in mid-life where she highlights the beauty of aging and the freedom that comes along with alcohol free life. She's on a mission to raise awareness towards the life changing impact of sobriety as we age.  She interviewed me for her podcast and you can hear that conversation on episode 182 of to 50 and beyond. It's called “Getting Sober Over 60” and you can access it here In this Episode I'm always fascinated by the way peoples drinking evolves over the years – I'm the first person to admit that drinking can be a lot of fun – until it's not – until you become dependent - check out our podcast on how we go from "liking to wanting to needing"  Let's remember that 20% of social drinkers WILL become dependent over the years – if we are in that 20% then that doesn't make us bad people – or weak people – or diseased people. It just makes us people who have become addicted to an addictive drug!  People who will have to do a bit of work to change their habits – and that's where people like myself and Lori come in – we've been where you are and we can help you make the change.  As you heard Lori did the fun bit in her teens and 20's – partying as a teenager and then working in real estate, earning good money and drinking wine with friends and colleagues. Then it was the mommyjuice phase – in here 30's Lori felt depressed, put on weight and found her high pressure job all a bit much. She was using wine at home to cope with her stress and felt trapped in a vicious cycle. She refers to her early 40's as the “dark years, she lost her mom and could get through two bottles of wine at a time. She had a wake up call when a family member asked her if she was an alcoholic.  That's when she realised that alcohol had become the centre of everything in her life. Of course like many of us she tried “the rules” (drinking only on certain days, drinking red rather than white etc etc) which of course didn't work. Of course she also tried to “moderate” but of course that didn't work either - in fact we agreed that for many of us its only when we try to cut down that we realise the extent of our problem.  We realise that we have crossed a line with our drinking and it's going to take more than a bit of willpower to make a change. So if you are busy trying to “moderate” and using rules to control your drinking please save yourself a lot of heartache and take a complete break – no need to use the F (forever word) – just take a break Every drinker needs to take regular breaks to test their dependence. Tribe Sober has just opened their annual Dry January Fundraiser which offers community and online support for 30 days - more info here. “Playing the Movie Forward” is a very popular tool in our community.  Lori found herself “playing the movie forward 20 years” and was  horrified at what she saw.  She knew her drinking would escalate over the years and decided that she was done.  She poured her Chardonnay down the sink and got started on her life changing journey to sobriety. Lori used journaling as her key tool –there is so much evidence of the value of keeping a journal – and it helps us so much when we are on this path. We can use it to process our emotions, note our triggers and track our journey.  We can read back to the early days and see how much easier its getting and realise how many benefits we are experiencing. And of course the more benefits we do experience the less likely we will be inclined to return to Day 1! Exercise was another key tool for Lori and she educated herself about the best ways to strengthen her body in midlife. So journaling, exercise and playing the movie forward are all great tools which will help us to quit drinking. We all need to create a personal toolkit and we help you with that at our regular Tribe Sober workshops.  Read more about our workshops here. Sobriety has given Lori freedom and peace. When she feels anxious she now understands how to self soothe without alcohol. I loved the way she said that in early sobriety we have to protect ourselves and build ourselves up so that we can learn to cope. Then we can go on to learn how to actually thrive our alcohol free lives. That's exactly what we help our members to do at Tribe Sober with our 7 step program – get more info and sign up here.  We agreed that ditching the booze gives us a feeling of power - we are doing something that the majority of the population would not even consider - Sobriety is a Superpower! Times are changing and the sober curious movement is helping that. People are getting “sober curious” and wondering what their life would look like without it. Your past is not your potential. In any hour you can choose to liberate the future. -Marilyn Ferguson On August 11, 2013, while watching a Lifetime movie home alone, Lori Massicot made one decision that changed the trajectory her entire life. Astrologically, the time around our 50th year is particularly potent, and this is because of an asteroid called Chiron. Chiron is the “wounded healer” and describes the quality of our childhood traumas, and also shows us the unique medicine we need to heal them. In our 50th year, we have an opportunity to create a bridge between our past and our future, by healing our Chiron wounds.  As we do this, we unlock essential things within ourselves, and ultimately, we use what we learn to teach others how to heal themselves. This is called the Chiron Return. My guest Lori Massicot, a Sober Lifestyle Coach pulled off some miracles during her Chiron Return, things that paved the way for what she does now. Are you experiencing menopause?  Have you been worried about how you are going to feel?  In this episode we dive into learning more about menopause, and all the things that our bodies are going through. There is so much more information available for women in today’s society. We discuss how what we put in our bodies, and what we choose to do with our bodies makes a difference in how our menopause journey will go.   In this episode I talk with Lori Massicot, a sober lifestyle coach for women over 40, podcaster, certified nutrition coach, and LOVER of all things midlife.  She joins us to discuss her own menopause journey, and her sober life journey. After eight years of going through perimenopause while drinking two bottles of Chardonnay in one sitting, Lori decided to take the road less traveled and quit drinking after three decades of being the “party girl.” We dive into what women can do to take their journey into their own hands and find the best course of treatment to live a happy healthy lifestyle even over 50!   Questions I asked: How can we keep ourselves from succumbing to aging stereotypes? In Episode 6 the couple are chatting with Lori Massicot about all things aging! It’s the night before Melissa’s 31st birthday and the conversation couldn’t have come at a better time! Lori teaches women how to create a healthy lifestyle, both mentally and physically, so that they stop numbing out and start feeling happier and more confident in the middle of life; alcohol-free. The topic is perimenopause, but as usual the conversation gets SO much deeper! Listen along as the trio discuss aging - how to do it, what to look for, what it feels like, and how to handle it. Lori is a sober lifestyle coach for women over 40, podcaster, certified nutrition coach, and LOVER of all things midlife. After eight years of going through perimenopause while drinking two bottles of Chardonnay in one sitting, Lori decided to take the road less traveled and quit drinking after three decades of being the “party girl.” Cody and Melissa find themselves inspired as it becomes clear that you can pursue your dreams at any age, and we know you’ll be inspired too. Certified Nutrition Coach, Holistic Wellness Coach and Sober Coach   Lori primarily helps women who are over 40, and she says that that time of life is a wake up call, "where you really need to start  making adjustments to yourself care, to what you're eating, to how you're thinking and to how you're moving your body."   Host of Podcast to 50 & Beyond   We need to rally and support each other during this time of life.     "Midlife is the Best Life"   Lori discusses an easy first change we can make to improve ourselves, and that would be to focus on the food that we are eating. Start adding things, instead of taking things away. Add more water, vegetables, make some healthy swaps (crunchy apples vs. crunchy chips).       Lori works with her clients on  reinventing stories that they've been telling themselves for years. THey work on reconnecting their body and mind and asking, "what is really going on?" It's all about taking the time and sticking with it, and being really consistent.   If you leave things inside, then you're your own accountability. Once we start talking about things openly, it changes our perspective completely.   Lori's advice for those who have a fairly sedentary life is to start slow and start with what you have. Go for walks, dance, add in basic strength training. It is life changing!  Start with a basic 30 minute workout three or four times a week.   Lori has found that one of the best times to work out is in the morning; it will change your mood, get your metabolism and get you revved up. You'll have a better outlook to the whole day.   Lori Massicot
