I had the honor of chatting with the phenomenal Stephanie Land, an author and activist whose voice resonates deeply with so many of us. Stephanie's work sheds light on the crucial issues of social and economic justice, all while sharing her powerful journey of parenting under the harsh reality of poverty. You might know Stephanie from her debut book, Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive. This raw, unfiltered look at her struggles became a #2 New York Times bestseller and captivated millions as a hit Netflix series.  The Netflix adaptation of Maid wasn't just popular; it was transformative. Reaching 67 million households in its first four weeks, it became Netflix's fourth most-watched show of 2021. The series' impact was so profound that it led to a record number of calls to the National Domestic Violence Hotline, showcasing the real-world change that powerful storytelling can spark. With over 60 million hours of viewing in the first half of 2023 alone, Maid continues to inspire and resonate across platforms like TikTok. But Stephanie's journey didn't stop there. Her second book, Class: A Memoir of Motherhood, Hunger, and Higher Education, debuted in November 2023 as Good Morning America's Book of the Month and was hailed as one of the best books of the year by Amazon. It even garnered a nomination for the Reading the West award in Biography/Memoir. Publishers Weekly gave it a starred review, calling it “eye-opening and heartrending.” Class takes us through Stephanie's senior year in college and her daughter's first year of kindergarten, highlighting the challenges they faced and the socioeconomic barriers they overcame together. Beyond her books and speaking engagements, Stephanie is an arts and entertainment ambassador for the National Domestic Workers Alliance, championing the rights and recognition of over 2.2 million essential workers in the US. Her advocacy ensures that nannies, housecleaners, and home care workers receive the respect and rights they so richly deserve. Our conversation was filled with raw honesty, heartfelt moments, and a profound understanding of the struggles many face. Stephanie's story is not just one of survival but of relentless hope and unyielding strength. Tune in to this episode to hear Stephanie's inspiring journey firsthand. When Stephanie Land set out to write her memoir, Maid, she never could have imagined what was to come. Handpicked by President Barack Obama as one of the best books of 2019 and later adapted into the hit Netflix series Maid, Stephanie's escape out of poverty and abuse in search of a better life inspired millions. Maid was a story about a house cleaner, but it was also a story about a woman with a dream. In her new book, Class, Land takes us with her as she finishes college and pursues her writing career. Facing barriers at every turn including a byzantine loan system, not having enough money for food, navigating the judgments of professors and fellow students who didn't understand the demands of attending college while under the poverty line — Land finds a way to survive once again, finally graduating in her mid-thirties. Class paints an intimate portrait of motherhood as it converges and often conflicts with personal desire and professional ambition. Who has the right to create art? Who has the right to go to college? And what kind of work is valued in our culture? Class grapples with these questions, offering a searing indictment of America's educational system and an inspiring testimony of a mother's triumph against all odds. Stephanie Land is the author of the New York Times bestseller Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive, called “a testimony…worth listening to,” by The New York Times and inspiration for the Netflix series Maid. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Guardian, The Atlantic, and many other outlets. Her writing focuses on social and economic justice and parenting under the poverty line. She is a frequent speaker at colleges and national advocacy organizations. Find out more at Stepville.com. Sara K. Runnels is a seasoned humor writer, copywriter and writer-writer living in Seattle, WA. She is a regular contributor to The New Yorker, and her satire has been featured in McSweeney's, Betches and Overheard, among other publications that respect scintillating wordplay. Sara has also spent more than 15 years pushing corporate boundaries by writing extremely fun and edgy copy for a variety of popular brands (including airlines, TV networks and dating apps—all of life's necessities). Her witticisms, viral one-liners and sharp social commentary can be found, quite literally, all over the internet (@omgskr). She specializes in clever dating and relationship content, and always has something to say about politics, pop culture and the Pacific Northwest. She is currently working on a funny novel in between episodes of terrible reality TV.  Class: A Memoir of Motherhood, Hunger, and Higher Education The Elliott Bay Book Company

Those living in poverty often aren't seen or acknowledged on a daily basis by the rest of society. There are organizations and government agencies that try to help. And many who express empathy, but do they really know how difficult life is for someone who doesn't have resources and may not know where their next meal is coming from. With that in mind, it's not a big surprise that there aren't a lot of books or TV shows about poor people. So, when Stephanie Land's debut book Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay and a Mother's Will to Survive, chronicling her struggles as a single mother living in poverty became a best seller in 2019, it opened many readers' eyes about how hard day-to-day living is for poor people. More people  learned about it when Maid inspired a TV series on Netflix. Stephanie Land has written a new book – that just went on sale Tuesday called Class: A Memoir of Motherhood, Hunger, and Higher Education that describes her time trying to juggle raising a daughter, a pregnancy, going to college to get a degree, not bringing in much money and fighting to realize her dream of becoming a writing. Rich families around the world employ butlers and maids to look after their expensive properties. These houseworkers have access to every aspect of their employers' lives: they get to know their habits and their deepest secrets. Kim Chakanetsa talks to two former maids who worked for wealthy families in the USA and the UK. Stephanie Land is the bestselling author of Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive, a poignant memoir highlighting the plight of overworked and underpaid domestic workers in the USA. Her story has recently been turned into the successful Netflix series, Maid. When she was 19, Sara Vestin Rahmani moved from Sweden to London to work as an au pair for a rich family. She thought she would only stay for a year, but she quickly became embedded in the family's life, and was exposed to a lifestyle she never imagined was possible. This week, BBC Culture dropped its list of “The 100 Greatest TV series of the 21st Century.” No. 1 is exactly what you’d think it’d be, but below that, there’s plenty to argue about. (Deadwood at 18?! Horse pucky.) The Nose, over the years, has covered many of the shows on the list, by the way: Atlanta, Black Mirror, Fleabag, Game of Thrones, The Good Place, I May Destroy You, Mindhunter, OJ: Made in America, The Queen’s Gambit, Schitt’s Creek, Stranger Things, The Underground Railroad, Watchmen… to name a few. And, speaking of shows: Maid is a Netflix limited series inspired by Stephanie Land’s memoir, Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive, and created by Molly Smith Metzler. Netflix describes it this way: “After fleeing an abusive relationship, a young mother finds a job cleaning houses as she fights to provide for her child and build them a better future.” Its 10 episodes dropped on October 1. Some other stuff that happened this week, give or take: Alec Baldwin Fired Prop Gun That Killed Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, Injured Director Hartford names city’s first troubadour and flow artist; Khaiim Kelly and Lael Marie Saez will serve three-year terms The Many Decades of Bond “How has someone who is a borderline rapist, murderer, and potential sociopath, endured through all these decades?” Michael Caine Says His Latest Film Is His Last, but He’s Not Retired The 88-year-old screen legend says he’s transitioning to writing, while his representatives walk back his remarks. Stephanie Land is the author of the New York Times bestseller, Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive, which is now a successful Netflix series. Carol Fitzgerald had the pleasure of interviewing Stephanie in two pre-publication interviews in 2019, when Maid was selected as a Bookreporter Bets On Selection. Netflix recently released a brilliant 10-part series called Maid with Margaret Qualley based on the book, which is back on the bestseller list. Before the book, Stephanie Land wrote a piece on Vox that went viral, and that led literary agents to ask for book on the topic. She discusses her meetings with the producers and writers of the Netflix show, where she shared both memories and photos, and she talks about scenes that still resonate with her. Stephanie and Carol talk about elements that enhanced the show that weren't in the book. They catch up on where she is now in life and what she's writing next. What does fake abuse look like? Or does it even exist? Emotional abuse might not leave a mark, but it certainly injures. Society generally agrees that physically abusing someone is wrong and that it can be classified as domestic violence. But what about constantly criticizing someone,  making them the subject of jokes, or blocking their access to finances, transportation, or friendship? Emotional abuse can be a taboo topic in a world that suggests: no bruise means no risk. In this episode, I explore emotional abuse, it's impacts, and just how much emotional abuse shaped the way I view the world and my place in it.*If you or someone you know is suffering from abuse, you can call the Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE). Or text "START" to 8878.*It's also helpful to tell a trusted friend, pastor, supervisor, coworker, or counselor. You're not alone. As mentioned in the episode:Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive by Stephanie LandWhat is emotional abuse? How to Recognize Verbal AbuseResources for Allies and SupportersAdditional resources: (no affiliate links)Parental Psychological Abuse toward children and Mental Health Problems in adolescence by Syeda Fariha Iram Rizvi and Najma NajamThe Deepest Well by Nadine Burke HarrisYou can follow Anna Frymire on Instagram @frylikefrenchfry. It's my delight to be able to bring you a remarkable and important story today. I'm joined by author Stephanie Land, who has become known for her unflinching writing on poverty and motherhood. Stephanie writes about her years seeking out an existence for herself and her daughter through her work as a housekeeper. She writes about her struggle to make ends meet, her reluctance use of food stamps and the bigotry she encountered for needing to access social services. But she also chronicles her efforts to keep alive her dream of going to university and becoming a writer something she nurtured in blog posts about her life with her daughter and getting by in those years. Since then her work has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Vox, Salon and elsewhere. Her book Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay and a Mother's Will to Survive is already a New York Times bestsller that's been met with all kinds of critical acclaim. Although her circumstances have now changed, Stephanie remains active in fighting to change the stigma surrounding people in poverty, especially single mothers. Stephanie lives in Montana but while in Toronto to give in a talk she visited me in my small home studio. Show Notes Love our work? Please check out our Patreon Campaign!
