Happy Freaking Tuesday. Caro read One Italian Summer and listened to Taylor's Swift surprise song set in Gelsenkirchen and decided just because she's married it doesn't mean she can't fall in love again. It's the summer of "sexy dates" - which are basically "engates" (engaged-dates) for washed up married girlies like ourselves. The real tea comes from audience tips, who are proof that this theory works and Niki has enough ideas to write a book on cool things we should all start doing with our spouse. Listen for a little touch of delusional inspiration because there's no reason we all shouldn't be living in our own rom-coms, and the book should keep getting saucier with each chapter (even when the logistics of life are trying their DAMNDEST to get us).

On this episode of Complicated Conversations we welcome back Rebecca Serle, New York Times bestselling author of One Italian Summer and In Five Years, to discuss her new novel, Expiration Dates, a story about the search for love and finding yourself in the process.  This is our third time chatting with Rebecca and every time our minds are blown by what we take away about the interplay between fate vs free will and life's big questions. We discuss the scene that moved Rebecca to tears when writing it and what it taught her about not abandoning herself; the radical act of putting yourself first; magical realism as a natural extension of external things occurring in life; the energetic footprint of love; the mantra that she tells herself about the Universe; and how the “twists” in her novels tell her what the story is really About.  Rebecca told us, of her writing, that she just wants “to make people feel.” Mission accomplished! Expiration Dates is out now. Buy it, read it, share it, and listen to our spoiler-free chat wherever you get your podcasts.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hearts & Daggers

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 6, 2023 52:58

Summary: Ciao, bella! Welcome to the first stop on our Summer Jetset Series - Italy! Today Devin and Holly visit Venice and Positano together to understand the close relationship between love and death in Italy. Since the time of Shakespeare, the country has been a place of passion in literature (second only, perhaps, to France). They agree that regardless of your prior experience visiting the country, novels set in the country are always vivid, intriguing, and colorful.  Topics Discussed: The Dagger (4:19): Holly discussed Death at La Fenice by Donna Leon, a crime fiction novel set in Venice featuring the fictional hero Commissario Guido Brunetti. The book opens at the end of intermission at Teatro La Fenice; the conductor, Maestro Wallauer, has been poisoned and is dead on the floor of his dressing room. Holly's key takeaways were: The mystery of who killed the Maestro is a slow burn through the book. Brunetti's tactics are conversation focused, and the novel is the opposite of a templated popcorn thriller. That being said, it came together very effectively by the end.  Leon has lived in Venice for years and brought her experiences to the page; we get great behind-the-scenes looks at the Venetian opera house, excursions by canal around the city, and a colorful cast of Italian characters (most of whom are constantly smoking and drinking coffee)  This series is the Italian cousin to the Bruno Chief of Police series set in southern France; if you're a fan of Louise Penny you'll also likely enjoy these books!  The Heart (17:35): Devin discussed One Italian Summer by Rebecca Searle, a novel set in Positano that follows Katy Silver on a vacation that was intended as a mother-daughter trip. When Katy's mother dies before they can make it to the Amalfi Coast, Katy's entire sense of reality and herself is turned upside down. She is unsure if she wants to stay in her marriage, and uses the vacation to get some space. Devin's key takeaways were: This is essentially a time travel story; once Katy arrives, she meets her own mother (Carol) at 30 years old in the summer she had spent in Positano before meeting her husband and settling down. The time travel element isn't fully explained and the reader is left unsure of how Katy travels back and forth across decades (best not to think too hard on this and just enjoy the story).  Searle explores this mother-daughter relationship in-depth through the novel. Katy has a romantic fling as well, but ultimately the book posits that Carol is her soulmate. Katy must learn how to reframe herself as an individual, instead of as a bonded pair with her mother.  Regardless of the plot holes, this novel had such vivid descriptions of Positano, the hotels, the hills, the restaurants, even Katy's outfits, that the reader is fully drawn into the Italian adventure. The sense of place could not be stronger.  Hot On the Shelf (38:34): Holly: Decent People by De'Shawn Charles Winslow Devin: In the Lives of Puppets by TJ Klune What's Making Our Hearts Race (41:15): Holly: Libro.fm  Devin: Ted Lasso Season 3    Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Her debut novel was the wildly successful The Dictionary of Lost Words (2020), which was based on her original research in the Oxford English Dictionary archives. The Bookbinder of Jericho (2023) is her second work of historical fiction, and exists in the same world as The Dictionary of Lost Words. Her first work was One Italian Summer, a memoir of her family's travels in search of the good life. Australian writer and social researcher Pip Williams' first novel, The Dictionary of Lost Words, was published just as the world locked down due to covid, and became an international best seller. It tells the story of motherless Esme who spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, a garden shed in Oxford where her father and a team of lexicographers gather words for the first Oxford English Dictionary. Over time she discovers words relating to women's experiences often go unrecorded. She's just published a companion book ,The Bookbinder of Jericho, which is the story of twin sisters who work in the bindery at Oxford University Press in Jericho. Pip Williams was a social researcher with dozens of peer reviewed academic papers in the fields of psychology, sociology, public health, medicine, work and family, and community development. But a few years ago she got fed up with academia, and "the only logical thing to do was give it up and drag the whole family to the other side of the world to work as labourers on organic farms." That adventure was documented in a previous book One Italian Summer. Pip Williams will be appearing at the Auckland Writers Festival next month.

Summary: Holly and Devin dive into books about mothers, what they go through, and how authors portray them. While some tropes about motherhood can be worn out and uninteresting, they both agreed that a fresh and nuanced perspective on mothers can bring a lot of richness to any book.  Topics Discussed: The Heart (1:36): Devin discussed Still Life with Bread Crumbs by Anna Quindlen. A financially strapped professional photographer Rebecca Winters finds herself leaving Manhattan for rural New York in an effort to save money. Once there, she not only uncovers a new community but a new perspective on herself, her family, and her future. Her key takeaways were: While set up as so many Hallmark movies are, with the Big City Woman going to find a Small Town Fella, Quindlen's empathy and creativity around each character adds a depth that creates profundity while the reader also gets to enjoy the coffee shop banter and peacefulness quintessential to daytime TV rom coms.  While our protagonist is a mother herself, a key exploration of the theme came in her art; Rebecca initially became famous for a series of photographs from domestic life and the messiness therein for mothers, as well as photos of her infant son.  The 3 generations of family portrayed by the Winters clan (Rebecca's mother, Rebecca, and Rebecca's son) gives a nuanced and important portrayal of parenthood, trauma, and the past's impact on present-day choices.  The Dagger (20:29): Holly discussed The School for Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan. Our protagonist Frida is struggling through a divorce with a one year-old little girl to take care of. One bad choice brings her in front of Child Protective Services, and lands her at the School for Good Mothers, where she must prove that she is capable again of having custody of her daughter, Harriett. Holly's key takeaways were:  Chan works to expose society's lack of support for mothers, racism, and unhealthy expectations for parents via an extreme scenario: forcing those who have made mistakes into a cruel rehabilitation program. This dystopian novel is close enough to reality that the added layers at the School of Good Mothers are especially disturbing and impactful. There is an unexpected sci-fi element and the novel called to mind others like The Push and Klara and the Sun. This book will give the reader even more empathy for mothers and to critically analyze their own biases and judgements of parents, motherhood, and portrayals on social media.  Hot On the Shelf (41:38): Devin: One Italian Summer by Rebecca Searle Holly: The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St. James What's Making Our Hearts Race(45:01): Holly: Inventing Anna on Netflix Devin: Turning Red on Disney+ Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle Website: https://gobookmart.com Buy Now: https://amzn.to/3Iv638Y “Rebecca Serle is known for her powerful stories that tug at the heartsrings – and her latest is just as unforgettable.” —Woman's World “An unconventional love story that embraces people's flaws and selfishness as part of what makes them human.” —Kirkus “Poignant and ultimately uplifting. The mouthwatering descriptions of Katy's food and the lush Italian coast bring a strong, atmospheric sense of place. Recommend to fans of Helen Fisher's Faye, Faraway (2021) and those who enjoy being transported to other countries through fiction.” —Booklist “A touching story…the mother-daughter bond is made palpable through Katy's grief and desire for connection.” —Publishers Weekly "Going down as easy as a limoncello on a hot summer's day, this daydream of a story affirms what it means to love and be loved. An enchanting book for the last cold days of winter, but also suggest it to readers come summer.” —Library Journal “In these cynical times full of snark and memes, it's nice to surrender to magic every now and then. Plus, the wanderlust that the book conjures is worth it as is….[A] story about love, loss and that point in adulthood where we learn our parents are human, too, and not always perfect.” —Associated Press --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/support

We are thrilled to chat with Rebecca Serle once again, this time about her new novel One Italian Summer. This book explores the powerful bond between a mother and a daughter, set on the breathtaking Amalfi Coast. We devoured this book in one sitting and yet it kept us talking for days! One Italian Summer is the story of a young woman who has lost her mother, who was her best friend and her first phone call. Carol passes away before they can go on their trip together, but Katy decides to go alone. In a magical twist, once she arrives on the Amalfi coast, Katy ends up meeting her mother as a 30 year old woman.  ** We start by discussing the captivating setting of this novel, Positano. This book is a love letter to Italy. We loved hearing about the personal story between Rebecca and her own mother that is the genesis for this novel. (01:38) ** Complicated Woman: Katy. Rebecca shares how she relates to Katy, calling this novel a letter to her future self. We love her response about deep platonic love between women! (06:45) ** We discuss Carol and how Katy comes to see her mother as a complex, flawed woman. (09:45) ** We read and discussed a powerful passage about the rage associated with grief. (12:40) ** Fate vs free will is a favorite theme in Rebecca's novels and this podcast. We loved chatting with Rebecca about how narratives are fiction and we get to choose the stories we tell about our lives. (16:15) ** Rebecca always leaves a special message in her acknowledgements so of course we HAD to ask her more about this one. (18:49) ** Of course we discuss astrology and Rebecca's role in our astrological journey. (23:07) ** We talk about The Gilmore Girls and the incredible fact that Lauren Graham reads the audiobook version of One Italian Summer. (27:15) ** Rebeeca shares what she is loving right now. (29:34)

Rebecca Serle is taking readers to Positano, Italy in her latest novel, “One Italian Summer.” The story follows Katy, who, in the depths of grief after her mother's death, goes alone on a planned mother-daughter trip to the Amalfi Coast.  Rebecca joins the podcast this week to talk about writing the emotional novel about a daughter's love for her mother, the inevitable future of defining yourself after you lose your parents and her fears of losing her own parents. She talks about curiosities surrounding your parent's life before yours, “memory is fiction,” she says. Rebecca shares an incredible memory of her own of a trip to Rome with her mother, that even involved meeting a man her mom had dated!  Olivia and Rebecca discuss her other works, and the magic that is “The Gilmore Girls” and audiobook narrator, Lauren Graham. “One Italian Summer” is available now from Atria Books.
