How does Shakespeare's King Lear resonate in a world facing climate catastrophe? Novelist Julia Armfield explores this question in Private Rites, a novel set in a near-future London reshaped by rising sea levels. Following three sisters grappling with their father's death, Private Rites weaves together themes of inheritance, power, and familial wounds—echoing Shakespeare's tragic monarch while carving out a distinctly modern, queer perspective. Armfield, author of Our Wives Under the Sea, discusses her fascination with disaster narratives, the inescapable dynamics of sibling relationships, and how Shakespeare's work inspires her storytelling. From the storm in King Lear to the watery depths of her fiction, she reflects on how queerness, horror, and the climate crisis intersect in literature. Julia Armfield is a fiction writer living in London with her wife and cat. Her work has been published in Granta, The White Review, and Best British Short Stories in 2019 and 2021. In 2019, she was shortlisted for the Sunday Times Young Writer of the Year Award. She was longlisted for the Deborah Rogers Award in 2018 and won the White Review Short Story Prize in 2018 and a Pushcart Prize in 2020. She is the author of salt slow, a collection of short stories, which was longlisted for the Polari Prize in 2020 and the Edge Hill Prize in 2020. Her debut novel, Our Wives Under The Sea, was shortlisted for the Foyles Fiction Book of the Year Award in 2022 and won the Polari Prize in 2023. Her second novel, Private Rites, was longlisted for the inaugural Climate Fiction Prize in 2024. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast. Published March 11, 2025. © Folger Shakespeare Library. Hannah van der Westhuysen gives a quiet, melancholic performance of this contemplative, grief-filled reimagining of KING LEAR. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Kendra Winchester discuss Julia Armfield's story set in a vague future of drowned cities and constant rain. The story revolves around three queer sisters after the death of their famous father, an architect. Van der Westhuysen captures the meandering, watery quality of the novel with their soft, almost musical narration. A sad and beautiful listen; Armfield fans will not be disappointed. Christmas is almost upon us, and before we ring in the New Year with our GOTY picks, it's time for us here at the Indieventure podcast to pour ourselves a generous glug of mulled wine and reflect on the year as a whole as it pertains to indie games. Has it been a good year for indies? How did it stack up against previous years – especially the wall-to-wall hit machine that was 2023? And, putting personal preferences aside (because we'll be digging into that in-depth in our next episode, don't worry) what have been the biggest indie games of the year? Naturally expect Balatro, 1000xRESIST, Hades 2, and Pacific Drive to get a lot of airtime in this one, as well as Silksong (still conspicuous in its absence as we head into 2025). We also look back over our most-anticipated games from the start of the year, checking in with what came out, what got delayed, and what landed unexpectedly (or not) from a list that included Anger Foot, Creepshow, Crow Country, Demonschool, Europa, Loco Motive, Lost Records, The Mermaid Mask (née The Mermaid's Tongue), Rise of the Golden Idol, Sucker for Love 2, Synergy, Thank Goodness You're Here!, and Tiny Bookshop. And then – just in case you thought we were going to be if anything a bit too sensible in this one – an old friend returns to deliver a self-indulgent quiz! There's really no point in outlining the premise here, just trust us when we say that it has to be heard to be believed. We end, as always, with our current hyperfixations! Rebecca has been defying gravity thanks to the Wicked movie, Rachel has been reading a stack of queer fiction (specifically Julia Armfield's Salt Slow, Eliza Clark's She's Always Hungry and Rachel Yoder's Nightbitch), while Liam has turned his attention to the skies - and the places it leads - with Mark Vanhoenacker's Imagine A City. Our music was written and performed by Ollie Newbury! Find him on Instagram at @newbsmusic. Kate (who happens to be the writer of this description) hopes that her newest monologue on women in publishing, this time made with the aid of intensive allergy medication (she thought she had a cold, turns out her body's ability to withstand pollen is just terrible), is just as entertaining as all the others.

Hi pals!  In this ep, we cover our brush with celebrity as well as the relationships that are soft launching and crumbling.  It seems that Venus Retrograde is (still) wreaking havoc on people's relationships. We reference this Vogue US piece by Laura Pitcher titled, It's Been A Summer Of Relationship Chaos. Was It Written In The Stars? Next, there's a rumour that Red, White and Royal Blue star Nicholas Galitzine is actually royalty. We break it down and reference this Teen Vogue article.  What began as a radio segment in New Zealand has quickly turned into a viral movement. “Girl Math” is taking the internet and brunch conversations by storm. We chat about whether it's actually empowering or if it's another way to infantilise women. We read from this Refinery29 article titled, Is Girl Math Really Helping The Girls? By Elizabeth Gulino. We also share this reel from the Girls That Invest account. Follow them! Over in Illinois, they've become the first state to regulate kid influencers. The legislation "creates a private right of action for child influencers against their parents that featured them in videos and did not properly compensate them," according to the governor's website.  We chat about why this is important and whether it'll make it to Australia.  For recommendations, Jas has been loving Our Wives Under The Sea by Julia Armfield, while Maggie has been listening to the Who Shat On The Floor Of Our Wedding? podcast.  That's all folks! It's Bookshelf time here at The Book Club Review podcast, when we talk about the books we're reading outside of book club, the ones we get to pick and choose for ourselves. And so listen in to find out what Laura thought of The Ginger Tree by Oswald Wynd, a lesser-known backlist gem, A Place of Greater Safety, Booker-winner Hilary Mantel's immersive doorstop about the French revolution, and The Goblin Emperor, Katherine Addison's blend of court intrigue, goblins and steampunk. Meanwhile I'm reporting back on Babel by R.F. Kuang, the bestselling fantasy epic set in 19th-century England, Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield, part bruisingly tender love story, part nerve-clanging submarine thriller, and Either / Or by Elif Batuman, the follow-on from her first novel The Idiot. It's the continuing adventures of her protagonist, Harvard student Selin, and has been described as ‘a second year of love, sex, and books'.

This week we're joined by the incredible Julia Armfield! The author will be telling us about her love of shark movies. A self confessed connoisseur of the genre, Julia, Olivia and Ione will be chatting about why shark films are the perfect escapist genre, how all couples have a 'shark person' and a non shark person, why we shouldn't consider these films guilty pleasures, and lots more. Julia will also be telling us about how nostalgia and our lust for summertime plays into our societal obsession with shark movies, why we shouldn't read too deeply into the subtext of these films, and how water inspires her own writing.Every other week we'll be picking the brain of a different creative about something they admire that has nothing to do with how they generate their income.Want to support the podcast?
