Grief is a looming presence in this audiobook. The three Blue sisters try to move on after the death of Nikki, their vivacious and beloved fourth sibling. AudioFile's Leslie Fine and host Jo Reed discuss how Kit Griffiths narrates the sisters' parallel stories with a measured cadence, conveying the survivors' internal and external struggles as they wrestle with the past and try to salvage their futures. Overall, Griffiths offers a strong narrative voice, but she keeps the listener at a distance. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Coco Mellors is the author of Cleopatra and Frankenstein, which was a Sunday Times bestseller and is currently being adapted for television. Her second novel, Blue Sisters, came out in September 20240 and was a Read with Jenna pick. She joins Marrie Stone to talk about it. Coco discusses writing from different POVs, writing compellingly about addiction and substance abuse, how to write sex scenes in all their various forms (and how to trick yourself to write difficult scenes by switching POV), the elegant weave of backstory, and her favorite advice by former professor Rick Moody. They also discuss the difficult heartbreak of the publishing process and the business of being a writer — rejections, MFAs, and the pressure of the next novel. We also get into bookworm mode to discuss one of the most hotly anticipated books of the summer - Coco Mellors' second book Blue Sisters.
Laufey, the 25-year-old singer-songwriter, has risen to prominence by taking the trials of today's dating world — casual relationships, no labels and seemingly endless swiping on apps — and turning them into timeless love songs.Today, Laufey reads Coco Mellors's essay, “An Anxious Person Tries to Be Chill,” which is about a woman trying to work through her deep-seated relationship anxieties and attachment issues in an on-again, off-again situationship. Laufey says she, too, has been an anxious partner. While she thinks a toxic relationship, like the one in the essay, can make for a great love song, she now knows secure relationships can make beautiful music, too.
Hiiii! On today's show: it's been another week of Princess Kate headlines - apparently she's at the farm shop! Nothing to see here! Everyone carry on! Plus, Meghan Markle's curious timing for her new business launch, Olivia Munn reveals her cancer diagnosis, J Lo's got a bit of a career headache on her hands, and Kylie Jenner is… getting into the alcohol game? This week, Zara recommended Blue Sisters by Coco Mellors and The Bee Sting by Paul Murray. Mich recommended a snazzy TikTok colour analysis hack (you'll have to listen for that one!) and the ABC Conversations episode ‘From Yale to psychiatric prison'. Coco Mellors is an author living in New York. Her current book, Cleopatra and Frankenstein, is available now. We chat about jet lag or depression, wifi was down on his flight, so Chris watched Yellowstone, is her name real? Dancing with countertop drugs, Carrie Bradshaw read her book, was SATC better than AJLT? A recent holiday in Italy, her vacation style, bicoastal humility, she makes a good case for going to school, her indie sleaze phase, why she stopped partying, her drunk meal of choice, how her relationships have changed, dealing with her onscreen adaptation, the famously underrated man in his forties, who plays Cleo, and her top three dry goods. twitter.com/donetodeath twitter.com/themjeans www.instagram.com/cocomellors Learn more about your ad choices. Happy Saturday, book club friends! This month, we read Coco Mellors's best-selling debut novel, Cleopatra and Frankenstein. The book follows 24-year-old British artist Cleo, whose chance meeting with a man called Frank (who is some 20 years older than her), changes the course of both of their lives. In Frank, Cleo finds a future where she can paint, be happy and, well, land a green card. When the darkest parts of each of them meet each other, Frank and Cleo are forced to reckon with their demons, what it means to be their best selves and what it is they actually want out of their future. Join us in the all the book chat over on our Insta, @theshamelessbookclub, and our TikTok, @theshamelessbookclub. Welcome to Pagecast, the book-centred podcast series presented by Jonathan Ball Publishers. In this episode. Tecla Ciolfi, the Founder & Editor of Texx and the City, will be chatting with Coco Mellars, the incredible author of the captivating novel Cleopatra and Frankenstein! For readers of Modern Lovers and Conversations with Friends, an addictive, humorous, and poignant debut novel about the shock waves caused by one couple's impulsive marriage. 'A tender, devastating and funny exploration of love and friendship and the yearning for self-evisceration. Coco Mellors is an elegant and exciting new voice' PANDORA SYKES, author of How Do We Know We're Doing It Right New York is slipping from Cleo's grasp. Sure, she's at a different party every other night, but she barely knows anyone. Her student visa is running out, and she doesn't even have money for cigarettes. But then she meets Frank. Twenty years older, Frank's life is full of all the success and excess that Cleo's lacks. He offers her the chance to be happy, the freedom to paint, and the opportunity to apply for a green card. She offers him a life imbued with beauty and art-and, hopefully, a reason to cut back on his drinking. He is everything she needs right now. Cleo and Frank run head-first into a romance that neither of them can quite keep up with. It reshapes their lives and the lives of those around them, whether that's Cleo's best friend struggling to embrace his gender identity in the wake of her marriage, or Frank's financially dependent sister arranging sugar daddy dates after being cut off. Ultimately, this chance meeting between two strangers outside of a New Year's Eve party changes everything, for better or worse. Cleopatra and Frankenstein is an astounding and painfully relatable debut novel about the spontaneous decisions that shape our entire lives and those imperfect relationships born of unexpectedly perfect evenings. Coco Mellors was raised in London and New York City. She completed her MFA in Fiction at New York University, where she was a Goldwater Fellow. Cleopatra and Frankenstein has been translated into over ten languages and is being developed for television by Warner Bros. She lives in Los Angeles, California, with her husband.
On today's show we chat to Beth Wilson: a Melbourne-based makeup artist turned entrepreneur. As a makeup artist who loved her job, Beth always dreaded one thing after every appointment: cleaning the makeup, the brushes and the tools. Being unable to find the beauty cleaning products she was always searching for, Beth did it herself, launching her very own beauty brand Saint Jack back in 2020. So join us as we unpack Beth's journey from makeup artistry to business owner; that one viral TikTok video that sold out her product four times; and what the future holds for business women trying to break through the noise in the very saturated market of beauty. – Beth recommends reading Cleopatra and Frankenstein by Coco Mellors, and watching Daisy Jones and the Six, based on the book of the same title by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.
This week we were joined in the writer's studio by Coco Mellors, author of one of our biggest selling novels of the year, Cleopatra and Frankenstein. It's the story of a woman and a man—Cleo and Frank—who meet in New York on New Year's Eve 2006, who fall in love despite—or perhaps because of—their very many differences, and whose marriage within months causes not only an earthquake in their own lives, but also sends disruptive aftershocks out into the lives of their friends and families. All of which makes Cleopatra and Frankenstein one of the most devilishly readable debuts of the year.Buy Cleopatra and Frankenstein: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/product/6416505/mellors-coco-cleopatra-and-frankenstein*SUBSCRIBE NOW FOR BONUS EPISODESLooking for Friends of Shakespeare and Company read Ulysses? https://podfollow.com/sandcoulyssesIf you want to spend even more time at Shakespeare and Company, you can now subscribe for regular bonus episodes and early access to Friends of Shakespeare and Company read Ulysses.Subscribe on Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/sandcoSubscribe on Apple Podcasts here: https://podcasts.apple.com/fr/podcast/shakespeare-and-company-writers-books-and-paris/id1040121937?l=enAll money raised goes to supporting “Friends of Shakespeare and Company” the bookshop's non-profit, created to fund our noncommercial activities—from the upstairs reading library, to the writers-in-residence program, to our charitable collaborations, and our free events.*Coco Mellors grew up in London and New York. Hello, book clubbers! This month, we read Aussie author Diana Reid's second novel, Seeing Other People. Seeing Other People follows two sisters, Eleanor and Charlie, living two very different lifestyles in Sydney after lockdown. When the novel begins, Eleanor has a corporate job and is in a relationship with Mark, Charlie is an actress living in a sharehouse with friends (namely, her long-time crush Helen). Then, all these characters suddenly collide, and Eleanor and Charlie's seemingly sturdy bond is put to the ultimate test. Annabelle got to interview the very clever Diana Reid for this one - we will play that chat in the second half of this episode. "When the darkest part of you meets the darkest part of me, it creates light." This is one of the many incredible lines readers will find in Coco Mellors's luminous debut novel Cleopatra and Frankenstein. In this riveting story, readers meet Cleo and Frank, two disparate characters whose chance encounter brings them closer in ways they couldn't have expected. Throughout the book, readers also meet Cleo and Frank's closest friends and family members, whose own stories add texture to Cleo and Frank's relationship and provide a nuanced portrait of what it means to come together, grow up, and in some cases, grow apart. Cleopatra and Frankenstein may be a work of literary fiction, but for Coco, it also calls upon what she deems "emotional nonfiction." And her own story of transformation and curiosity is a reminder that slowing down—and looking inward—is often the only way forward. In this interview, Coco shared more about what led her to write Cleopatra and Frankenstein, her thoughts on gratitude and faith, and the importance of spending time doing what you love most. This episode also opens with a story by Alyssa Natoci. Coco Mellors has written for ‘The New York Times', ‘The Stack' and ‘Flash Fiction Magazine' among many other publications. She has now turned her hand to novels and her debut, ‘Cleopatra and Frankenstein', details the whirlwind romance and marriage of 24-year-old British artist Cleo and forty-something advertising executive Frank. She speaks to Georgina Godwin about her book, which goes beyond a conventional love story.
Coco Mellors gets deep with us about her debut novel, Cleopatra and Frankenstein, a “new New York love story.” ** Complicated Woman: Cleo. Coco describes Cleo as “the heart of the novel,” but explains that it took her years of writing to get to know her because it was like mining her unconscious -- like looking into the sun (01:51). ** We discuss Coco's bold narrative choices and how the structure evolved over the seven years she wrote the novel. We loved hearing about how it was an organic, “faith based” process for her. (04:54) ** Coco shares how she tackled a massive rewrite following critical feedback and still managed to remain hopeful. (09:53) ** We discuss how cinematic the scenes are in this book, how important the location and setting are to specific scenes. Coco explains that she is a “story writer,” in the sense that for her the emotion always comes first, then she looks for settings to allow that to come though. (11:55) ** Coco shares our obsession with characters being SEEN by another. She discusses how that is a “through line” in the novel. (15:04) ** We talk about what love is and how her definition and understanding of love evolved and grew alongside her characters' own views. (18:27) ** Coco and her novel give us more narratives around addiction and its many variations. (22:14) ** What's your damage is something we love to explore and Coco is right here with us! We discuss her interest in mommy issues and agree that at some point the path to healing is to accept that this our life is ultimately our own. (25:50) ** Coco preaches to the choir as we discuss how growth is never linear and perfectionism just may be the worst addiction around. (30:53) ** We love to hear about a debut author's path to publication, especially when it is a tale of perseverance and patience like Coco's journey. We even get a sneak peak at her second novel. (36:00) ** We talk astrology or “what's your horoscope” as Frank puts it. Coco and Kate, true Leos, bond over liking to “preen” and to celebrate their birthdays. (39:21) ** As always, we ask Coco to share what she is loving right now in terms of books, movies and TV shows. Because we can't shut up about it, we end up gushing about “The Lost Daughter”! (41:48)
