Listen to author and critic Erica Wagner in conversation with Huma Qureshi, writer of “Playing Games”, her first novel published by Sceptre in 2023. In her novel, the author draws a nuanced portrait of sisterhood, family, love and loss through the arc of two main characters, Hana and Mira. Throughout the conversation, Erica Wagner and Huma Qureshi evoke Alice Munro, Ann Patchett or even Ann Taylor, feminine writers who deeply inspired her to write about quiet, but significant, everyday moments. They also discuss how the author returns to the subject of real life informing fiction in “Playing Games”, a recurrent theme in her writing. As part of the Rendez-vous littéraires rue Cambon [Literary Rendezvous at Rue Cambon], the podcast "les Rencontres" highlights the birth of a writer in a series imagined by CHANEL and House ambassador and spokesperson Charlotte Casiraghi.Huma Qureshi, Playing Games, © Sceptre, 2023.© Huma Qureshi, Playing Games, 2023. TW: mentions of miscarriage, infertility and grief. This episode was recorded in late October.I'm so pleased to be joined by Huma Qureshi on the show this week, talking about her work and her first novel and latest book, Playing Games. Playing Games tells the story of two sisters, Hana and Mira, who like most sisters, love each other deeply but have a relationship that is flawed and complex. Mira, an inspiring playwright, overhears a very private and personal conversation her sister is having with her husband. Mira finds her sister's words so powerful, they set off the cogs of writers inspiration in her mind, and she writes the scene of a play exploring marriage for a modern-day couple. Huma poses questions about using real life for fiction, and where the boundaries and lines are. Is it ever okay to write about someone else's life, and what happens if that someone else is your sister? Hana herself is going through a tumultuous time in her marriage, as she experiences loss and deep longing for motherhood.Huma Qureshi is the award-winning author of four books, including How We Met: A Memoir Of Love and Other Misadventures and the short story collection, Things We Do Not Tell The People We Love, both published to critical acclaim in 2021. In 2022, How We Met was shortlisted for the Books Are My Bag Non-Fiction award, and Things We Do Not Tell The People We Love was long listed for both The Jhalak Prize and The Edge Hill Short Story Prize. Her first book, In Spite of Oceans, received The John C Laurence Award. In 2020, Huma won the Harper's Bazaar Short Story Prize, with her story The Jam Maker. Her novel, Playing Games, will be published in November 2023. Huma writes the popular newsletter Dear Huma and teaches a variety of creative writing courses via her website, www.humaqureshi.co.ukI really hope you love this episode, and as always I'd love to hear from you. When I first saw the trailer for Sonakshi Sinha and Huma Qureshi's Double XL, I was thoroughly excited. Here were two plus-size women in the public eye, promising a film about two fat women, Saira (Sonakshi) and Rajshri (Huma) fighting for their dreams in a world where their capabilities are diminished because of their size. Did the film manage to live upto my expectations? Tune into this review to find out.

A collection about mothers and daughters, children lost, unborn, grown up, grown apart, and the dissonance between lovers. It exposes the silences in families and the parts of ourselves we rarely reveal. A daughter asks her mother to shut up, only to shut her up for good; an exhausted wife walks away from the husband who doesn't understand her; on holiday, lovers no longer understand each other away from home. The underlying themes of loneliness, secrets, family and displacement and also the desire to belong to someone, to some place; a yearning for love, intertwine these stories. The collection includes "The Jam Maker", which has just been awarded the Harper's Bazaar Short Story Prize 2020.

BellBottom, inspired by true events, is set in the 1980s, described as a time when hijacking had become rampant. The films propels itself forward on a certain caper-style energy, slickness and scale. Watch Anupama Chopra's review of BellBottom on @Amazon Prime Video India , starring Akshay Kumar, Lara Dutta among others.
BellBottom is the first film to release on the big screen after theatres reopened post the second wave of coronavirus pandemic. Starring Akshay Kumar as a RAW agent, the film is a heady blend of emotions, action, entertainment, drama and stunning visuals. Directed by Ranjit M Tewari, BellBottom is an edge of the seat thriller with a well-researched script, effective screenplay and impactful storytelling. The film also stars Vaani Kapoor, Lara Dutta, Huma Qureshi, Adil Hussain in pivotal roles. Inspired from real life hijackings that shook the country in the 1980s, the film narrates the episode of Indian Airlines flight ICC 691 that takes off from Delhi and is overtaken by four terrorists. This was our fifth plane hijacking in seven years and then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi (played by Dutta) has had enough. While she plans to let the Pakistani government negotiate with the hijackers (as the plane has landed in Lahore), under-cover RAW agent, Anshul Malhotra (played by Kumar), code-named BellBottom, has a different plan in place. He wants to not only rescue 210 passengers but also capture the hijackers. How the team carries out India's first covert mission, gives BellBottom its main plot. Watch the film in theatres near you.
MONSOON MARRIAGES - it sounds like a film, doesn't it? Mira Nair's film was ‘Monsoon Wedding' (2002), but this is theme of our Nat Bollywood's June Bird Eye Review Show (Episode 14) as she digs her bird claws into ‘Maharani' (Sony Liv), ‘Ek Mini Katha', a Telugu production available on Amazon Prime and finally, ‘Triple Whammy' starring social media sensations Urvashi Goverdhan and Sanjay Manaktala (Malayalam/English) and available on Neestream. Maharani, which stars well-known Huma Qureshi (see her Asian Culture Vulture interview with from Cannes, link below) is about the wife of a politician thrust into the top job when her husband decides to hand over the reins unexpectedly to his wife. In ‘Ek Mini Katha' a young man really thinks he won't measure up – yes in the trouser department! And in ‘Triple Whammy' a cute couple go off the rails…but why and how? Have you seen any of these? What do you think of these series? Huma Qureshi in Cannes 2018 https://youtu.be/zLCJ70Vd2rA
I would want to remind them that my first film ever was Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), a really big ensemble film. I was barely there for 15 minutes, and that film changed my life. Army of the Dead again, ironically, happened almost 10 years after that, it was my debut film in Hollywood. That was a big ensemble with a really acclaimed director (Zack Snyder).” says Huma Qureshi. Joey Cage, Gabriel the manbeast01, CJK and the return of the king EpicJasooooooooooooon talk... Army of the Dead is a 2021 American zombie heist film directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay he co-wrote with Shay Hatten and Joby Harold, based on a story he also created. The film features an ensemble cast consisting of Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Ana de la Reguera, Theo Rossi, Matthias Schweighöfer, Nora Arnezeder, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tig Notaro, Raúl Castillo, Huma Qureshi, and Garret Dillahunt. It follows a group of mercenaries who plan a Las Vegas casino heist amid a zombie apocalypse. Snyder conceived the idea for Army of the Dead as a spiritual successor to his 2004 debut film Dawn of the Dead. The project, originally from Warner Bros. Pictures, was announced in 2007 with Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. attached to direct. However, the film spent several years in development hell before Netflix acquired distribution rights in 2019. With a $70–90 million production budget and Snyder also serving as cinematographer, principal photography took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico and Atlantic City, New Jersey in mid-2019. The film underwent reshoots in September 2020 after several sexual misconduct allegations were made against cast member Chris D'Elia; he was replaced by Notaro using green screens and CGI. Army of the Dead was released in select theaters in the United States on May 14, 2021, and was digitally released on Netflix on May 21. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with praise for its cast, humor, and action sequences but criticism for its runtime, emotional tone, and overall execution of its premise. Two prequels, a film entitled Army of Thieves and an animated series entitled Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, are scheduled to be released on Netflix. Snyder has also mentioned the possibility of a sequel.

Snyder was announced as director, and the cast joined over the next several months. Chris D'Elia was originally cast in the film, but after several sexual misconduct accusations were made against him in August 2020, Tig Notaro was hired to replace his character and reshot his scenes using green screen and body doubles. The #talkintv boys break down their thoughts on the movie, how it adds to the zombie subgenre and what it does for Snyder as a whole, before giving their final thoughts.
