What is the spiritual path and how does it change us? This is a solo episode with some thoughts and reflections on what it means to have a spiritual practice and discipline. I offer a reading from the book: "Ritual As Remedy" by Mara Branscombe, a guest from back in January, episode 148, and speak to how my own practice has shifted and changed over the years. “Your faith may be found inside the quiet of daily meditation practice or in your evening prayers. Be it fire ceremony, sweat lodge, tea ceremony, yoga practice, playing music, ecstatic dance, or kitchen dance parties. Be it your journal practice, turning pottery, or summiting a mountain. What is your conscious practice where you build your house of faith? Where do you fill yourself up on a soul level? What consciously and wholeheartedly lights you up and brings you lasting joy?” - Ritual as Remedy, by Mara Branscombe These are important questions to reflect on when you're cultivating a life of spirit. How best can you honour this spiritual quest of life? What makes you come alive and feeds your soul? This is what I'm diving into today. We had the sense today that we were speaking with a soul who has a transcendent sense of confidence in herself. Not in any way an arrogant sense of entitlement, nor in a narcissistic way. But, someone who has the confidence that comes with not fearing death. Death being that slow cool release from a lifetime of bubbling growth, in the way that water must fall off a mountainside. The water has to fall eventually. So why not bathe yourself in it? Mara Branscombe is a mother, writer, yogi, artist, teacher, mindfulness leader, ceremonialist and spiritual coach. Mara and Tessa chat about what a ritual is, what different energies mean, and what it looks like exploring them. Mara Branscombe is a ceremonialist, spiritual-coach, yoga teacher, and meditation guide. She is the author of Ritual as Remedy, Embodied Practices for Soul Care . Timestamps(01:55) Fall rituals (03:25) Negative connotations surrounding rituals (05:55) Witches, black cats, and the black plague (09:10) What is a ritual? A ritual is anything done with intention and being fully present both inward and outward. Welcoming the extraordinary, leaning into what lights you up, and creating sacred spaces are all aspects of practices. Ritual and rhythm are paired together hand in hand, yin and yang. 2. Anxiety and intuition are predictive and generative energies respectfully. Anxiety is predictive energy because we often forecast that we will fail or feel negative outcomes. Generative energy with intuition, "feels like a big yes" as Mara puts it as it, however, we are conditioned to not feel or follow that calling. Where will that "big yes" take us and what can we generate, develop, and achieve through it? 3. Mara's evening routine consists of no media consumption, a warm shower or ocean dip to wash off the day, working with plant energies such as lavender and acknowledging that your work for the day is done. We are sensitive beings, if we don't stop working even during sleep, we become endlessly tense. 4. Finding a community of like minded people could begin with asking if anyone is holding an equinox or solstice gathering or finding new and full moon circles. If finding that company is difficult to find, following the lunar cycles and simply observing the moon is powerful. Holding space for the new moon with new beginnings and full moon for wild, expansive powers is a beautiful opportunity for others to join you as well. 5. We are all born intuitive with the capacity to heal and self guide. Becoming attune to the environment and the rhythms of nature and aware of energy, we become more spacious and centric, embodied in being connected. In this episode I chat to ceremonialist and spiritual coach, Mara Branscombe. You might be familiar with Mara from her yoga teacher offerings, but she's also known for her ritual work which is what we talk about from her beautiful new book - Ritual as Remedy: Embodied Practices for Soul Care. What I enjoyed about her book is how Mara invites us to explore our inner mystic through esoteric self-care practices. One of my personal favourite practices is working with the elements, so I wanted Mara to share why the elements are important to acknowledge inwardly and out. We also discuss how and why people are affected by the wind, and how we can use wind as an ally for inspiration. Mara shares the difference between a ritual, a habit and a superstition, like when someone wears a good luck charm. You don't have to be into dancing in the moonlight, or bathing in it for that matter to love this book, all you need is an open heart. I hope you love Mara as much as I do! HIGHLIGHTS: - Mara talks about her background as an adventurer, Waldorf Education school teacher and dancer - all these combined experiences shine through in her new book. Mara also expands on the varied traditions she has experienced that allowed her to create a unique manual of practices. - We talk about spiritual longing, what it is and what longing feels like, and what it means to ritualize healthy habits, and how do we do this? - We discuss becoming the witness. A practice that is not as easy as it sounds. ABOUT MARA: Mara Branscombe is a mother, writer, yogi, artist, teacher, mindfulness leader, ceremonialist and spiritual coach. Today's episode of The Mindful Minute is a conversation with Mara Branscombe about the power and simplicity of everyday rituals as a form of soul care. Mara is a mother, writer, yogi, artist, teacher, mindfulness leader, ceremonialist and spiritual coach. She is the author of a new book “Ritual As Remedy: Embodied Practices For Soul Care.” Mara is passionate about weaving the art of mindfulness, self-care, creativity, mind–body practices, and earth-based rituals into her life and work, and she has been leading community ceremony since 2000. Together, we chat about what ritual is and why it matters now more than ever. Mara explains how to begin a daily ritual, and why she chose the elements and the Wheel of the Year as the framework for her book. My personal favorite part of the conversation was our discussion of how and why our personal practices might change over the course of a season - why we might lean into an element or practice more heavily at some point and then gradually add, shift or evolve that practice as the season changes. Be sure to listen all the way to the end as Mara guides us through a short mindfulness practice! You can learn more about Mara at https://marabranscombe.com/ And you can find her book at https://www.ritualasremedy.com/ Download my FREE OFFERING: 5 Practices for Heartbreaking Times Here: merylarnett.comIf you enjoyed today's episode, please consider making a one-time or monthly donation to support the growth of this labor of love. The one word I am going to spend my entire life trying to know and integrate is “Dao”.  I am obsessed with understanding Dao even though I know that the closer I get to it, the less I will know. This word is nearly un-nameable because it takes on a unique meaning for each unique person. And I swear, I'm not trying to be obtuse on purpose here. The words we have to translate “Dao” in English is a good try, but it's hard to capture such an elusive word. We call it Road. Path. Middle Way. Purpose. And when I roll these words along my tongue, examining them to see if it matches what it feels like in my Heart, I feel a bit like Goldilocks with the too small bed, the too hot porridge and the too big chair. In this episode, I've asked Mara Branscombe to join me in conversation to help capture what it means to live in harmony with intention, intuition and alignment with the Dao.
