"It was so difficult to become someone." The house hero talks about Chicago's competitive scene, developing a sound and letting go of his ego. Theo Parrish is one of dance music's most influential DJs and producers. Raised in Chicago, he's become synonymous with slow-burning, immersive grooves and sets that mix classics with obscurities. He began DJing in 1986 aged 13, eventually earning a degree in sculpture and moving to Detroit, where he hit his stride as an artist and became a member of the collective Three Chairs alongside Moodymann, Rick Wilhite and Marcellus Pittman. He also started the label Sound Signature, which uses the language of soul, jazz, disco, Chicago house and Detroit techno. A few months ago, Resident Advisor teamed up with London institution fabric to host Parrish for an eight-hour set—his first time playing the club. While he was in town, he also spoke with CDR's Tony Nwachukwu. In the Exchange, Parrish talks about the intensely competitive scene he grew up in. He DJ'd for 13 years before he was ever paid or had his name billed on a lineup. It took years of passion and hard work to break out of his local scene and build the career he's become known for. "At five years, you're dealing with the technical part [of DJing], at ten it's finding your sound and at 15 it's dealing with the ego of it all," he says. "It's not until much later that you actually start to play for and with people." Parrish also reflects on the ongoing dearth of diversity in the dance music industry and posits whether some of the most popular music in the US—such as trap—reinforces counterproductive racial stereotypes. He asks: did house music ultimately survive because it left where it originally came from? Listen to the episode in full. -Chloe Lula

This episode of FSQ actually has not much to do about dolphins other than the fact the opening track is by dream alt indie pop star Emmett Kai and is titled "Dolphins" - it is a total bop. The show does swim through two hours of genres that feel oceans apart, from the indie alt pop of Kai himself with more cuts from his new album "Whale Milk", to selections from Art Feynman, Gordy Cox, and Kasabian. Don't sleep on the Balearic set that opens up the second hour with new music from Kinobe, Santino Surfers, and Residentes Balearicos. The show takes a dance pop turn with big room hits from Braxe & Falcon, Nelly Furtado, Tove Lo, before working its way back to deeper releases from Charlie Soul Clap with Martin Buttrich and the new Soul Clap Records led compilation from their sub label, House of EFUNK which this time focuses on Detroit talents like sillygirlcarmen, Mike (Agent X) Clark, and Marcellus Pittman. At this point, Shy One might be familiar to most music fans as one of the hosts of NTS's daily breakfast show, Soup To Nuts, where she helps listeners across the UK and Europe settle into their morning routines with an eclectic and soulful selection of dance music and downtempo. But the London artist has been around a lot longer than that, with a discography that goes back well over a decade. She started releasing music as a regular on Scratcha DVA's label, and it was there that she sketched out a recognizable but impressively varied approach rooted in her home base of London. On her records, Shy One sometimes feels like London incarnate, synthesizing the histories of Black British dance music—drum & bass, grime, UK funky, broken beat, jazz, you name it—into one syncretic and immensely appealing sound. But her music glows with the warmth of American deep house, too, which lends it a timeless, ageless quality that has proven immensely appealing. She furthers this mission with Private World, a party she started with Ruby Savage. The name kind of says it all: she's inviting you to her own personal space, but what awaits is a whole wide world of music and culture. Her RA Podcast feels like a hybrid between a club DJ set and her morning show, and here, she zeroes in on a the lineage of American house music from the '90s and beyond, featuring tracks from the likes of Green Velvet, Marcellus Pittman, Roy Davis Jr., Wbeeza, Jay Daniel and more, plus a spotlight from Baltimore club king DJ Technics. It's patient and easygoing but perfect for a small dance floor (or a livingroom party), focused but stylistically diverse. It's everything we've come to expect from an artist like Shy One, who weaves stories and histories with her DJ sets, and does it effortlessly, too. @shyonebeats Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/911

RODNEY KHALASCHI (They’re Here, Housepitality / San Francisco) Rodney Khalaschi (@rodney-kh) fully immersed himself in the San Francisco underground music scene upon moving to the city from Los Angeles in 2014 . With a respectful understanding of the unique culture that exists around collecting and playing vinyl, Rodney pursued deeper musical knowledge and a fine-tuning of his skills under the mentorship of Tyrel Williams (Acid Test, Immortal Sin). Rodney’s unwavering love for vinyl quickly extended into his life away from his decks at home, ushering him into working for Vinyl Dreams and RS94109; two of San Francisco’s most beloved record stores catering to dance music enthusiasts of all varieties. As Rodney fell into family-style relationships with artists and dancers in the Bay Area, his sound began to take shape. His DJ sets fall somewhere on the spectrum between sultry and energetic, always paying homage to the roots of dance music with their simultaneous Chicago and Detroit flavor, and never missing an opportunity to showcase music from local Bay Area artists. Rodney has played a myriad of memorable and expressive gigs, such as his recent set at the Sunset Campout 10 year anniversary in 2019, as well as opening sets for names like BMG, Tin Man, and Justin Aulis Long. He is a resident for Housepitality SF, and co-founder of They’re Here, a monthly dance party with a cult following of dancers who prefer a raw, post-punk edge. This mix is a special demonstration that was recorded in October 2020 from the deeper space of Rodney’s collection in light of feeling inspired by the new beginnings that were starting to unfold in his personal life. Nicola Loporchio is a producer and DJ, born and based in Bari, South Italy... In late 2008 he gave life to one of his most famous projects, Nico Lahs, immediately attracting the attention of some of the best electronic music outputs in the underground scene. It didn’t take long for some well-known and respected labels to notice him and, indeed, in 2010 he signed an EP on 8bit Records and since then his career has been steadily on the rise: in 2011 his first EP with Josh Wink's Ovum Recordings, another one in 2012 and, in the same year, also his first EP on Steve Bug’s Poker Flat, to finally come back on Ovum in 2014. During those years, he touched base in some of the most prestigious electronic music clubs around the world such as Cable, Sankeys, Club der Visionaere, Globus/Tresor, KaterHolzig, Weekend and Rex Club, just to name a few. Here he serves up a delicious hour of deep cuts, taking in work from artists such as Marcellus Pittman, Hanna, Carl Criag and Kevin Yost... to name a few. On the recommendation of UR founder ‘Mad’ Mike Banks, Ferguson purchased the Ensoniq ASR-10 in 1998. The ASR workstation would become the most intregal part of his sample heavy, filtered down sound. Our last guest was XDB and in the past we brought over Marcellus Pittman, Hakim Murphy, John Heckle and Paul du Lac to mention a handful. I'm a regular at Control either with local players and movers on the scene or in supporting acts for control guest DJ’s such as Even Tuell, Ulf Eriksson, Legowelt, Gunnar Haslam, DJ TLR and so on”. This mix is an incredibly smooth and dynamic mixture of eerie, trippy ambient soundscapes; curiously introspective moments; hypnotic minimal tracks and also some beautifully crafted melodic tracks too… it’s something that you can really lose yourself in and then re-find yourself an hour later after the silence has begun. “The first thing that comes to mind about how this mix came out is balance. A podcast is a great opportunity to stop researching music outside of the box and concentrate on what is already inside the collection. The process of finding pieces of a jigsaw that fit perfectly and crafting a spot, a shape or a space for something else or around something is one of the best ways of getting a deeper knowledge and understanding of the music that lured you in. The way you map it all out is where the DJ shows their true creative edge.” Dorin Croitoru, August 2015 https://soundcloud.com/luger https://soundcloud.com/chameleonparties ===== Full tracklist for this mix coming soon, but do feel free to ask for track ID's in the comments in the meantime.

As Detroit veteran and one quarter of 3 Chairs, Marcellus Pittman is a true original. He first raised heads on Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature label in 1999, while further releases on Omar S’s FXHE label and his own Unirhythm imprint have become modern classics. Pittman’s work recently featured on a release from Brazilian outfit Far Out Monster Disco Orchestra, and album which comes with a second disc of remixes. A selection of Far Out Records’ favourite Brazilian luminaries and many of Rio’s finest musicians, it enlists remix work from Pittman as well as fellow admirers Theo Parrish, Mark Pritchard, John Morales, Mark E and more. For Crack Mix 69 the distinguished selector fuses an exhilarating mix of uptempo disco, funk and soul, with a degree of lo-fi crunch. As with much of his work, this one’s peak time fire. Moving on from the last fine installment of the Avenue Red Podcast by Exos in Reykjavik, Iceland, we travel to another capital city in the opposite corner of Europe for this new addition. For number 017, we have a very interesting mixture of Detroit-tinged deep house records from a DJ from Bucharest, Romania who goes by the name of Profet. We first noticed Profet from a recent promo mix he put out for his Bucharest-based agency Sonus Discis, and we know quality when we hear it. With a confident swagger through distinctly jazzy and techy swathes of house music with a rich musicality, Profet has a really unique way of smoothly shifting through the gears and gets a really good eclectic vibe going in his sets. This mix for Avenue Red is no exception. He plays regularly at prolific gigs in the Romanian capital, most notably for the Chameleon parties for which he is a resident at the prestigious Control club. He has played alongside some world-renowned underground DJ's including: Even Tuell; Scott Grooves; Marcellus Pittman; Hakim Murphy; John Heckle and FUNKINEVEN to name a few. Also worth noting - Profet along with his friend and Chameleon co-resident Luger have busily amalgamated a hardware-only setup and are staring down the barrels of production work too, so this is yet another staple in the burgeoning Romanian music scene to look out for! We are very pleased to have his contribution to our series as here he demonstrates a really unique and fresh approach to constructing a story with pure wax. "A selection of special, beloved tracks that I love to play. I don't think in terms of 'house' or 'techno'... I just think the only criteria should be 'good music!'"
