On the Schmooze Podcast: Leadership | Strategic Networking | Relationship Building

Today's guest helps organizations and individuals get from where they are to where they want to go. She engages employees, develops leaders, and helps people find meaning on a daily basis—a concept she calls “breadcrumb legacy.” She is a speaker, teacher, and coach. After a 30-year career as a college professor of business management and leadership, she built her own business to share what she's learned. She is the host of the podcast "Becoming a Sage," which interviews thought leaders about life and work wisdom, and writes a column for Training Magazine called "Leading Edge." She is the author of six books, her latest book is “Breadcrumb Legacy: How Great Leaders Live a Life Worth Remembering.”  Please join me in welcoming Dr. Jann Freed.  In this episode, we discuss: Her thoughts on leadership: “A leader is someone in the position to influence the lives of others, positive or negative - this includes parents, teachers, pastors.” Jann's small-town roots while growing up in a tiny town in northern Iowa. Growing up with a heavy influence on her education from her parents, along with the friendly “threat” from her dad to prioritize finishing college before getting married. Her rebel streak and love for social justice. She was married in 1982 and kept her maiden name, surprising no one that knew her. Jann found her path by getting her degree, “falling into” banking, and realizing it wasn't the right fit for her. “I enjoy teaching because I'm passionate about learning.” Why she decided to go back to school and get her doctorate. Trying to understand promotions that didn't pay more money but provided tenure - another moment where her justice streak was at the forefront of her career. When she started thinking about leaving the role or moving on to bigger things, her sons were almost at university age, but she had an itch to create a different path. Her struggles with marketing and figuring out where she should be spending her time. Landing her TEDx talk through Marie Incontrera. The impact of meeting Dorie Clark. How she networks and stays connected with the different layers of her network, including 30 years of past students. Listen, subscribe, and read show notes at www.OnTheSchmooze.com

"Leading through crisis means being willing to pivot and being human, at the end of the day." - Marie IncontreraThe willingness to change and do things differently is imperative in running a successful and sustainable business. We do leaders a disservice by teaching them that there is one right way to do things or any kind of one-size-fits-all solution. The more we (as leaders) micro-manage, confine or deny, the more we limit people kicking butt on our behalf. That is what we get into in today's conversation with, digital marketing consultant, Marie Incontrera. Her key takeaways from the pandemic are:1). We need to be okay with hearing the feedback that we think we explained something and we actually didn't (in a way that was easily understood). 2). We need to be okay with people coming to us and telling us they're having a problem. We have to create a space where people are safe to come to us--even if they don't have a solution for what they're dealing with. And, "we're not out of the woods yet. It's not too late (to implement some of these helpful changes). We might as well use the opportunity to change now.” -----To learn more about Marie Incontrera, you can find her online at https://www.incontrera.com/. Welcome to yet another exciting live coaching session with me, Alissa Daire Nelson, your host. Our guest for today has been building her career in music since her 20s. Marie Incontrera has had a really awesome career but the arts don’t always pay the bills. Join me in finding out what made her leap from music to promoting others and discover how she steadily built her business, and how you can glean lessons from her journey to take a leap of your own.    About Marie Incontrera Marie is a social media and publicity expert, speaker, consultant, fitness enthusiast, and jazz musician. Fascinating combo, isn't it?! Her consulting services include social media and online branding service for individuals and small businesses; media bookings (specializing in podcasts); TEDx talk development and speaker booking outreach; and blogging and ghostwriting on platforms such as Thrive, Quora, Medium, LinkedIn Pulse, and more.) Her social media clients have included national best-selling business authors, medical professionals, wellness experts, a popular science-based gaming app, thought leaders, executive coaches, and more. Her speaker clients have booked TEDx conferences around the country, and her media clients have been booked on popular podcasts, and radio shows such as Entrepreneur on Fire, The World’s Most Amazing People, Positive Productivity, and more. Marie’s Top 5 StrengthsFinder Themes:   Ideation Input Intellection Futuristic Significance    Key Takeaways “Your easy is your gift.” Part of what creates our superpowers is not only our formal education but also our life experiences. We all have triggers and it’s important to know how and why we react. We don’t have to get stuck in all the BS that comes along with that one, legitimate concern. Entrepreneurship is a risky thing, but there are things that we can put in place to give us a little bit of breathing room. Learn to get that time for yourself to be able to come up with great, new ideas. Think outside the box and make it a non-negotiable. Let your Significance drive your WHY. Time-Stamped Show Highlights [02:19] Getting to know how Marie took that leap from music to promoting others. I’ve always done social media for my music career. I just sort of was naturally good at it. [06:32] We hear about Marie's StrengthsFinder themes. [08:10] Marie's challenge, and one that is important to address. Something minor goes wrong, and all of a sudden I’m stressed out. [09:34] How does the theme of Ideation function? Ideation is very common in entrepreneurs because we don’t like to be in boxes. [10:59] Writing down your stresses can be helpful. Oftentimes, by writing down your worry, you can have just a little bit of distance from it to actually have a conversation with it. [15:30] What to do when you find yourself saying yes to more things than you wish you would. [20:45] Addressing stress management and the ways to fill your cup When you take that time that you need for you, your ability to be most effective skyrockets. [26:29] Marie's legacy and the significance she wants to leave this world. I wanted to be able to support the arts in a very significant way [31:08] Podcast recommendation of the week!
