Don't Call It Nothing continues its tribute to the Screaming Trees and the late Mark Lanegan by reviewing the years 1990-93. The decade began with Lanegan releasing his solo debut, The Winding Sheet, with help from Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana. Both Conner brothers released records in 1990 through New Alliance Records, a subsidiary of SST that began life as an outlet for D Boon and Mike Watt of the Minutemen. In 1991, the Trees released their major label debut and final album with original drummer Mark Pickerel, Uncle Anesthesia. Barrett Martin then replaced Pickerel in time to record the band's masterpiece, 1992's Sweet Oblivion. We end the episode in 1993 as Mark Lanegan joins The Walkabouts for a soulful walk through the Charlie Rich catalog.Support the show
Don't Call It Nothing pays tribute to the late Mark Lanegan by discussing the Screaming Trees in the 1980s. Everyone, even all-time greats, has to start somewhere and this episode tracks the Trees early years, when they went from faithful sons of Nuggets, Sabbath, and The Stooges to masters of melodic acid rock.Support the show

Walk through to this side of the Invisible Lantern, with special guest Mark Pickerel. . . . YOU DON'T KNOW MOJACK is a podcast dedicated to exploring the entire SST catalogue, in order, from start to finish. During the podcast we will discuss all the releases that are part of our core DNA, as well as many lesser-known releases that deserve a second chance, or releases that we are discovering for the very first time (we actually don't know Mojack!). First and foremost we are fans, and acknowledge that we are not perfect and don't know everything – sometimes the discussion is more about a time, place, feeling, personal experience or random tangents, and less about the facts (but we will try to get to the facts too). Mark Pickerel You never know where your skills will take you, even if you grow up in a small town that has no real outlet for your creativity. You could start a band that is part of the founding of a movement called Grunge. Mark Pickerel talks about starting The Screaming Trees, drumming with Nirvana, and how life and wisdom has changed him from trying to force the direction of life, to producing his own music and being okay with where his creativity lands, but still doing his best to get the word out about it. Give a listen to one of the founders of Grunge Rock to now a maker of Americana Music. It's a great talk.
Singer, songwriter, and musician Mark Pickerel was a founding member of the Screaming Trees, a PNW band that shaped the course of grunge history in the 80s and 90s. After recording five studio albums with the Screaming Trees and recording with Nirvana as well, Mark started the bands Truly, The Dark Fantastic, and Mark Pickerel and His Praying Hands, (now Pickerel and the Peyote 3). Mark has also collaborated with musical icons such as Brandi Carlile, Mark Lanegan, and Guns and Roses' Duff McKagan over the years. Mark's most recent album is I Have Visions. What you will learn: Mark talks about his most recent album, I Have Visions, and reflects on his evolution from Mark Pickerel and His Praying Hands to Pickerel and the Peyote 3. He also shares what it was like to perform live for the first time since the pandemic began. [0:00-10:25] How Mark and his fellow Screaming Trees band members grew to feel a lot of PNW pride during their popularity. What it was like forming his first band in high school and graduating with two records under his belt. [10:25-21:26] How his collaboration with Nirvana came about, and the catalyst that inspired Mark to shift his focus to writing and singing. [21:26-31:48] How Mark has grown to enjoy the song-writing process, the inspiration he found learning that there was an audience for his songs, and how he learned to lean into vulnerability. [31:48-39:55] Mark breaks down his creative process when writing songs, and describes the balance he strikes between letting inspiration flow and implementing technical structure to his music. What Dwight Yoakam taught Mark early in his songwriting career. [39:55-50:32] Mark recounts his impressive history of artistic collaboration, and how much of it was born from mutual interests and respect. He shares an amazing story about his first time recording with Brandi Carlile on her first album, and how he knew right away he was, “dealing with a talent of a different caliber.” [50:32-1:02:57] Why Mark chose to settle in Ellensburg, a small, a rural town in Central Washington about 90 miles from Seattle. Mark gives insight into the differences between Los Angeles and the PNW regarding songwriting and performing opportunities. Mark provides some upcoming show dates, describes his plans for future, and shares about his family life. The Screaming Tree's 1992 record coming in at no. 17, guitarist Gary Lee Connor joins Bakko to share insights and stories of this classic album as well as the bands entire career and his relationship with the other members. Screaming Trees were an American rock band formed in Ellensburg, Washington in 1985 by vocalist Mark Lanegan, guitarist Gary Lee Conner, bass player Van Conner and drummer Mark Pickerel. Pickerel had been replaced by Barrett Martin by the time the band reached its most successful period. Although widely associated with grunge, the band's sound incorporated hard rock and psychedelic elements. The band released seven studio albums, five EPs, and three compilations. Screaming Trees is known as one of the pioneers of grunge along with the Melvins, Mudhoney, U-Men, Skin Yard, Soundgarden, Green River, and Malfunkshun.[citation needed] Screaming Trees rose to fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, along with bands such as Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden and was one of the most successful underground music acts of the 1990s. The band achieved one top ten single on the Modern Rock Tracks charts. Screaming Trees were plagued by extended inactivity due to their problems with making a follow up to Dust. This led to their official breakup in 2000.

he Jordan Cook AKA Reignwolf crazy buzz started almost two years ago with a stunning in-store performance at Easy Street Records in Seattle and an equally stunning performance at Sasquatch! and Bumbershoot 2012 and Sasquatch! 2013. Mr. Cook is wowing fans across the land with his electric and intense showmanship. Reignwolf is an artist in perpetual motion and there is no stage or space that can contain him. This is one wild wolf that can’t be caged and consumes anything and everything in his path. He does his thing live, large and walks a musical tightrope without a net. On this week’s episode of SMI Radio I chat with Reignwolf to talk about his style is approach to his live performances and his blues-based, gritty, raw Americana rock sound. Back in the 1990′s band’s like Nirvanna, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Screaming Trees helped lead a rock and roll revolution and collectively contributed to putting Seattle on the music map. Another Seattle rock outfit called Truly earned a ton of respect but their sound defied the grunge classification. Truly featured former Screaming Trees skin pounder, Mark Pickerel, former Soundgarden bassist, Hiro Yamamoto and the smooth yet menacing voice and overdriven guitar stylings of Robert Roth. The power-trio was first championed in the 90′s by DJ and tastemaker, Marco Collins while he was on air at 107.7 The End. The band’s first full length record and sonic masterpiece Fast Stories From Kid Coma released on Capital Records garnered praises from MTV and Steve Kurutz of Allmusic. Kurutz gave the album four and a half stars, calling it “a loosely based concept album. After a several year hiatus, Truly is back and will help celebrate The Moe 20 Neumos 10th Anniversary Shows on Sunday, January 12 at 6:00pm

One of the great things about doing a podcast and having a community page for the show is you get to meet fellow music lovers from the other side of the globe. I have met one such fellow, John Ross who started the excellent Feed My Ears Facebook page. For Episode 32 of Love That Album podcast, John and I discuss an album he recommended me, the excellent 2012 release for Ray Wylie Hubbard, “The Grifter’s Hymnal”. This album is a love letter to roots rock and roll and the many practitioners along the way who have inspired Hubbard. Ray loves singing about the power of rock – no lip service, he truly loves his music. He also writes about war, death, ratbag music industry executives, his own life and God. This man has a way with a lyric and telling a story, plus his music is gritty and honest. It was a great album for John and I to discuss. As usual, Eric Reanimator provides the show with another great “Album I Love” segment. He discusses the album ”Cody’s Dream” by Mark Pickerel (ex-Screaming Trees) and his Praying Hands. Download the show either from http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com or search for “lovethatalbum” in the itunes store. Send any feedback to rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au – either written or mp3. If you wish to join Feed My Ears, go to https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/373264322732907/ Start a discussion at the Love That Album facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum and tell us your favourite song that mentions a famous musician as part of its lyric..
