In a distant future where all life has been destroyed by technology, Brendan, James and Nathan sit down with their friend Bjay from The Bjay BJ Game Show to record a podcast about a Doctor Who episode called Smile. Notes and links Anticipating with relish the final demise of X, we have decided to preserve here for posterity the Twitter exchange between Nathan and Mina Anwar that he mentions early this episode. Nathan suggests taking a look at this — an aerial view of the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia in Spain. Brendan admits that he is a regular reader of Lance Parkin's AHistory: An Unauthorised History of the Doctor Who Universe, which is an impressively quixotic attempt to harmonise all the televised stories, spinoffs and deuterocanonical material into one vast, sprawling ridiculous chronology. We thank him for his service. James mentions how the phenomenon of social contagion was observed in a large-scale study conducted on Facebook in 2012. The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences published an article describing the results of the experiment in 2014, which makes it a plausible influence on this episode. Here's a contemporary news article discussing the ethical problems with this experiment. Grey goo is a kind of technical term for the possibility that everything on Earth might be consumed by rogue nanotechnology. The term was first coined in 1986 by Kim Eric Drexler in his book Engines of Creation: The Coming Era of Nanotechnology. It's also the basis of Michael Crichton's 2002 novel Prey. Erewhon: or, Over the Range (1872) by Samuel Butler is a satirical description of a utopian society, which bans machines for fear that they might become conscious and self-replicating. And more You can find links to all of the podcasts we're involved in on our podcasts page. But here's a summary of where we're up to right now. 500 Year Diary is our latest new Doctor Who podcast, going back through the history of the show and examining new themes and ideas. It's first season came out early this year, under the title New Beginnings. Check it out. It will be back for a second season early in 2025. The Second Great and Bountiful Human Empire has broadcast our hot takes on every new episode of Doctor Who since November last year, and it will be back again in 2025 for Season 2. This week's guest on Flight Through Entirety is Bjay Hobbs, who can be heard regularly discussing indie games with our very own Brendan Jones on The Bjay BJ Game Show. In their most recent episode, they discuss The Talos Principle (2014), a puzzle-based game that raises questions about identity, consciousness and religion. The episode Brendan mentions on Lost in Play will actually be out in a couple of weeks. Brendan, Richard and Steven have just released another episode of their Avengers podcast The Three Handed Game. It's the third episode of their triptych The Cool War, covering an early Season 2 episode called The Decapod, featuring Julie Stevens as Venus Smith, with a guest appearance by Philip Madoc, (probably) not in fishnets. The Blakes 7 podcast Maximum Power started recording its Series D coverage yesterday; new episodes will be released in December. And finally there's our Star Trek commentary podcast, Untitled Star Trek Project, featuring Nathan and friend-of-the-podcast Joe Ford. Last week, they paid a visit to an idyllic bird person planet with deranged exocomp Peanut Hamper in an episode of Lower Decks called A Mathematically Perfect Redemption.
Star Trek: Lower Decks, Series 3, Episode 7. First broadcast on Thursday 6 October 2022. This week, a mathematically perfect recurring villain gets her own episode of Star Trek, and we discover how much fun the show can be without all that relentless moralising, just moments before we also discover how much fun it is to watch a villain get her comeuppance while some dunderheaded bird people shake off the dead shackles of a stupid tradition.

Chirp, chirp, CAW, muthafucka! Peanut Hamper is BACK (for the first time) in a Very Special Episode of Lower Decks, and this episode of Jaxilly is also very special because the wonderful Michelle Ugalde flies back to the nest and rejoins the flock to sing her songs about it, songs that Jack, Sean, Sam and Barm are all too happy to join in singing. Songs about birdmen, nipples, Final Fantasy, why ANDOR is the greatest goddamn thing ever and so much more. Roost here! CORNISH GAME HENS ARE BIRDS

#StarTrek #Podcast #StarTrekPodcast #LowerDecks
This week on Star Trek Lower Decks, it's the unexpected return of the Exocomp Peanut Hamper! After abandoning the crew in the Season 1 finale, Peanut Hamper has been floating in the Pakled/Federation battle debris field. She manages to escape a Drookmani salvage ship and finds herself on an isolated planet called Areolus (no really, that's what it's called). While adjusting to living with the bird like Areore, we see her start to change and look to redeem herself and the choices she made in the past....or is she? Plus, at the end of a great episode, we get a hint of a new super menace that we could see again in the future! Dan, Kasey and Bill have a great time talking about an episode that really takes a chance, but works on so many ways. Although we don't all agree on how good the episode is, we still have a fantastic time discussing everything that takes place in episode seven of Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 - "A Mathematically Perfect Redemption"! Grab your favorite beak mask and get ready to soar as we have some great fun and discussion! WE COVER LOWER DECKS LIKE NO ONE ELSE Interested in great talk about Star Trek: Lower Decks? A lot happens in the world of Star Trek in just two weeks! First, we chat about our New York ComiCon experience, and our thoughts on the Discovery, Prodigy, and Picard panels (which we unfortunately couldn't attend in person). Though we wish we were there, at least we still got some trailers to react to. Speaking of reactions, we also give our honest thoughts about two episodes of Lower Decks, "Hear All, Trust Nothing," and "A Mathematically Perfect Redemption." While it was awesome to see and visit DS9 again (though perhaps we were left wanting for more), it's the Peanut Hamper episode where we have rather... different opinions. What did we each think? You'll have to listen to find out!

A very peculiar episode of Lower Decks. Well, we find out what happened to the exocomp Peanut Hamper after they abandoned the crew of the Cerritos at the end of Season One. They wandered around for a bit, found their way to pre-warp planet, and do what Peanut Hampers do. There's some romance, some flying snakes, some more *explicit* romance, a bunch of secret places shared, and a big reveal (or two) at the end. So to speak. What have we learned from this episode? Peanut Hamper gonna Peanut Hamper. ANNNNND - we find out about all the latest Trek News from NYCC! And don't forget to join us on http://patreon.com/setphasers
