It's really intensely weird, but it's beautiful."So like the title says, this week we're talking about Star Trek: Lower Decks, Godzilla Minus One, and the newest seasons of Black Mirror and Love Death + Robots. SOME of which we've actually watched. (Okay it's Star Trek and Godzilla. LD+R isn't out yet and we haven't psyched ourselves up to watch Black Mirror yet because DEAR LORD SO BLEAK.)Anyway, spoiler warnings for the Peanut Hamper episode of Lower Decks, because we've gotta discuss how there's not a trope left unturned in this show, and they will subvert every expectation you have. Think you know which way they'll go? Nope because BIRD PEOPLE ROBOT SEX that's why. Then we'll get into why we're looking forward to Love Death + Robots (Robert Valley mostly) and why we haven't watched Black Mirror yet (when you look at *emphatic gestures at THE WORLD* sometimes it's hard to jump in.)From there we talk about how Godzilla Minus One is possibly Nathan's second favorite Godzilla movie (and when you know how much he loves Godzilla that is SAYING SOMETHING) before discussing Wonder Woman 1984, consent in Vampire Diaries, the recent San Diego earthquake and Japanese beds that eat people. This week's outro is a clip from Sanctum by White Bat Audio. No lie, the 1998 Godzilla movie was hit or miss, but the museum trailer is SO COOL.Correction, the Black Mirror we said was kinda bleak and pointless was "Hated in the Nation," not Hated in America.Correction, the Black Mirror Elizabeth said was fine was "Demon 79."Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person?
This week, six millennials are astonishingly successful finding a large house to rent — the power points don't work, there's no mobile reception and the walls are quite literally made of alien woodlice. Oh, and it collapses into dust on their first night. It's Knock Knock. Notes and links Brendan quickly identifies two of the film antecedents of this story: The Evil Dead (1981), with its demonically possessed trees, and Hitchcock's Psycho (1960), whose antagonist has a complex relationship with his mother. Nathan first encounters David Suchet as Blott in Blott on the Landscape (1985), a BBC adaptation of Tom Sharpe's 1975 satirical novel of the same name. Knock Knock was written by Mike Bartlett, who was famous for a TV series called Dr Foster (2015), starring Suranne Jones as a woman who starts to suspect her husband of infidelity. David Suchet's first appearance in a Poirot property starring Peter Ustinov as Poirot — the 1985 made-for-TV movie Thirteen at Dinner (1985), an adaptation of Christie's Lord Edgeware Dies (1933), in which Suchet played Inspector Japp. Simon refers to the vault-related theorising of Whovians, a comedy aftershow that accompanied Series 10, 11 and 12 of Doctor Who on ABC-TV in Australia. Our very own Adam Richard was a regular in the show's first two seasons. And finally, Brendan recklessly introduces us to another possible inspiration for this episode, the 1977 film Death Bed: The Bed That Eats, which we would all have been better off not knowing about. In a distant future where all life has been destroyed by technology, Brendan, James and Nathan sit down with their friend Bjay from The Bjay BJ Game Show to record a podcast about a Doctor Who episode called Smile. Notes and links Anticipating with relish the final demise of X, we have decided to preserve here for posterity the Twitter exchange between Nathan and Mina Anwar that he mentions early this episode. Nathan suggests taking a look at this — an aerial view of the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia in Spain. Brendan admits that he is a regular reader of Lance Parkin's AHistory: An Unauthorised History of the Doctor Who Universe, which is an impressively quixotic attempt to harmonise all the televised stories, spinoffs and deuterocanonical material into one vast, sprawling ridiculous chronology. We thank him for his service. James mentions how the phenomenon of social contagion was observed in a large-scale study conducted on Facebook in 2012. The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences published an article describing the results of the experiment in 2014, which makes it a plausible influence on this episode. Here's a contemporary news article discussing the ethical problems with this experiment. Grey goo is a kind of technical term for the possibility that everything on Earth might be consumed by rogue nanotechnology. The term was first coined in 1986 by Kim Eric Drexler in his book Engines of Creation: The Coming Era of Nanotechnology. It's also the basis of Michael Crichton's 2002 novel Prey. Erewhon: or, Over the Range (1872) by Samuel Butler is a satirical description of a utopian society, which bans machines for fear that they might become conscious and self-replicating. In their most recent episode, they discuss The Talos Principle (2014), a puzzle-based game that raises questions about identity, consciousness and religion. The episode Brendan mentions on Lost in Play will actually be out in a couple of weeks. Brendan, Richard and Steven have just released another episode of their Avengers podcast The Three Handed Game. Check your software and make-sure to update your anti-viral software because our Casual Explorers are looking at times when Artifical Intelligence went ‘Wibbly' in the first episode, Voyager's ‘Dreadnought,' Torres deals with a super-intelligent missile from her past, then in Discovery's ‘Stormy Weather,' we do some exploration in a dark abyss while the Discovery's sentient computer struggles with self-doubt about her own skills and talents (and gurl, same) and then, Miles has to endure ‘A Mathmatically Perfect Redemption' and has to deal with his most hated Lower Decks character and consistently get their name wrong, on a completely seperate tangent, Peanut Hamper is the damn worst. No connection. Honest. We didn't use AI to write these show notes. Episodes talked about: ‘Dreadnought' (09:15) ‘Stormy Weather' (37:51) ‘A Mathmatically Perfect Redemption' (1:04:17) Talking Points: Paranoia, Iain M. In der 28.

This week on Star Trek Lower Decks, it's the unexpected return of the Exocomp Peanut Hamper! After abandoning the crew in the Season 1 finale, Peanut Hamper has been floating in the Pakled/Federation battle debris field. She manages to escape a Drookmani salvage ship and finds herself on an isolated planet called Areolus (no really, that's what it's called). While adjusting to living with the bird like Areore, we see her start to change and look to redeem herself and the choices she made in the past....or is she? Plus, at the end of a great episode, we get a hint of a new super menace that we could see again in the future! Dan, Kasey and Bill have a great time talking about an episode that really takes a chance, but works on so many ways. A lot happens in the world of Star Trek in just two weeks! First, we chat about our New York ComiCon experience, and our thoughts on the Discovery, Prodigy, and Picard panels (which we unfortunately couldn't attend in person). Though we wish we were there, at least we still got some trailers to react to. Speaking of reactions, we also give our honest thoughts about two episodes of Lower Decks, "Hear All, Trust Nothing," and "A Mathematically Perfect Redemption." While it was awesome to see and visit DS9 again (though perhaps we were left wanting for more), it's the Peanut Hamper episode where we have rather... different opinions. What did we each think? You'll have to listen to find out!
Although we don't all agree on how good the episode is, we still have a fantastic time discussing everything that takes place in episode seven of Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 - "A Mathematically Perfect Redemption"! Grab your favorite beak mask and get ready to soar as we have some great fun and discussion! WE COVER LOWER DECKS LIKE NO ONE ELSE Interested in great talk about Star Trek: Lower Decks? Look no further than the Trek Geeks Podcast Network! Discovering Trek breaks down every episode with our own Lower Decks crew of Dan, Kasey and Bill. First up: all the juicy trailers and announcements from New York Comic Con, then a dive into the Peanut Hamper!!
Uhhh... Peanut Hamper is back? We are following up on her misadventures in horniess with Forrest and Stacy. But it begs the question: Is this episode good, bad or just plain weird? We also ponder where Strange New Worlds fits into Trek and how it is shaping up to be the new gold standard.

This episode contains: Steven and Devon record on a glorious Sunday afternoon. Where's Ben? It's fun to have Nicole Lawless on the show (ep421) as an actual science person. Devon woke up in a good mood, until he watched the Star Trek: Picard trailer. That Star Trek: Picard trailer was TOO DARK. Brighten it up! Devon continues to work on removing the tree stump. With fire. When Devon removed the stump, did he shout "STUMPFEST"? Steven and Devon drool over the new Lego Razorcrest. Lego just bumped up all their prices due to inflation. Crazy. Steven finally gets a day off from single dad duty after Martine's recovery. Ok ok ok, where's Ben? Lego: so much money for plastic in different orientations. Evolutionarily speaking: Dead fish breathes new life into the evolutionary origin of fins and limbs. Evolution is AWESOME. Devon's 4yo. asked "when were chickens invented?" Devon talks evolution. Previously, our galeaspid fossils only had heads. Now we have a whole fossil. Primitive creatures on earth either had fins or limbs. Not both. If it wasn't for one measely asteroid, the dinosaurs would still be here. Is there a dinosaur planet out there? Is that where Ben is? https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2022/09/220928113007.htm Stressed friend: Dogs can smell when we're stressed, study suggests. A psychological stress response alters odor profile in our breath or sweat. Dogs can detect an odor change in VOCs produced by humans in response to stress. Want to test stress among study participants? Give them Math tasks! https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2022/09/220929133419.htm Common gene variant linked to COVID mortality: Presence of the APOE gene can predict cancer, dementia, and COVID severity. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2022/09/220921093000.htm Science Fiction: We have a picture of the hosts in Lower Decks style. Join our Patreon to see it! You want a whole episode of Lower Decks about Peanut Hamper? Be careful what you wish for. And they didn't really do any development on the character of Peanut Hamper. The bird people made Lower Decks feel like Rick & Morty. More Jeffrey Combs in Lower Decks this last week. AGIMUS is back, baby! But not Ben, I guess. Worf is a super serious Klingon, because he wasn't raised as one. Picard season 3 trailer came out, and everybody is SOOOO OLLLLLD. So... Worf is a pacifist now? Cool. We're down for it. Worf started as a cliche, but thanks to DS9 he's a well-rounded character. Big spiky ship now wants to blow us up, like the last few Star Trek films. Round ships vs. spiky ships: It's a simple rock-paper-scissors situation. How does 7 of 9 become captain of a Starfleet ship, given the first two seasons of Picard? Devon tears apart the ships of Picard season 3. Devon will not sell his Eaglemoss ships, even though it's out of business. Devon likes Andor! At least the first two episodes! The internet breaks! Devon review's Dennis E. Taylor's new book: Roadkill. Light read and fun. The A.I. in Roadkill is kinda like if the character Frasier from the show Frasier wanted to kill humans. Steven reviews The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers:
When Peanut Hamper's story continues with a crash landing on a backwater planet, she's more C-3PO than Paul Sheldon to the owl people who find her. But when Rawda takes the wayward space box under his wing, the ancient secret he shares ends up changing the course of the planet. Does Tom Hanks not know how to land a plane? Has new goat-milking technology affected the Areore population? What did woke culture ruin this time? A very peculiar episode of Lower Decks. Well, we find out what happened to the exocomp Peanut Hamper after they abandoned the crew of the Cerritos at the end of Season One. They wandered around for a bit, found their way to pre-warp planet, and do what Peanut Hampers do. There's some romance, some flying snakes, some more *explicit* romance, a bunch of secret places shared, and a big reveal (or two) at the end. So to speak. What have we learned from this episode? Join Erik, Girafe, Hawk, and Julian as they review and break down this divisive Peanut Hamper-centered episode. This episode is all about redemption….or is it?
