When life throws you a curveball, like a daycare closing on your much-anticipated golf day, you've just got to roll with the punches and maybe throw a Super Bowl party instead. That's exactly what unfolded this week, and I'm here to spill the beans on everything from the homemade wings and burgers that almost made me miss kickoff, to the tantalizing tales of a Vegas Super Bowl experience that was nothing short of electrifying. We even reminisce about unexpected celebrity run-ins, proving that whether you're whipping up game day grub or rubbing elbows with the likes of Matthew Barry and Ryan Clark, it's all about embracing the moment.Sometimes, the game's outcome hinges on a few critical moments - and this Super Bowl was no exception. Join us as we dissect the heart-stopping plays between the 49ers and Chiefs, where a muffed punt and a fumble took center stage alongside Harrison Butker's impressive kicking. But it's not just the on-field action we're chatting about; we also raise a glass to coaching legends, from Andy Reid's triumphant arc to Doc Rivers' scrutinized career. And let's not forget the halftime show - we're betting on Kanye West to bring down the house at a future Super Bowl with his expansive hit list and history of captivating live performances.Steering the conversation to a more serious note, we tackle the urgent topic of gun reform and the responsibility we each hold in ensuring community safety. We share personal encounters that underscore the normalized presence of firearms in everyday life and the varied reasons behind why people carry them. Shifting gears, we then take you on a ride through Saudi Arabia's intimidating driving culture and what it reveals about universal traffic behaviors and cultural nuances. Fasten your seatbelts for this multifaceted discussion that merges the excitement of sports, the depth of personal stories, and the gravity of societal issues.Support the show

Lots of tensions at the New York Times this past month. An episode of its popular podcast program The Daily was pulled during a newsroom debate about the strength of a prominent article led by Pulitzer Prize-winner Jeffrey Gettleman, which claimed that Hamas had systematically used sexual violence as a weapon of war. Here at home, sexual assault is the most common offense associated with wrongful convictions – and racial bias is at the core of these injustices. Someone who's been tracking it for years is Matthew Barry Johnson, Professor of Psychology at John Jay College of Criminal Justice & The CUNY Graduate Center – and author of the text Wrongful Conviction in Sexual Assault.

SURPRISE!! In honor of the BRAND NEW YEAR, it would be very fitting to bring back the people who not only founded this iconic podcast but the people who were part of this incredible experience. When I was a freshman at Xavier High School, one of the first involvements I joined during my time was the small podcast club called "Falcon Talk" bringing the latest of all things Xavier. Matthew Barry, Bryan Hultgren, and David Hoover were the founders of this podcast. Those founders are the same people who became my closest friends and brothers a fellow man could ask for. In addition, Julen Ljambio, another Xavier Alum who also joined the podcast in 2016 became part of the reunion as well. In this very special episode, the founders of Falcon Talk take a trip down memory lane on how the podcast came to be. Plus, we reminisce from notable interviews of Xavier Alums to our funniest moments that might surprise our audience. This special episode holds near and dear to my heart. As a Xavier Alumnus looking back into my start in media production and podcasting, definitely brings back the nostalgia on how far I've come. This is truly the moment I will never forget forever. Matthew Barry is a Los Angeles-based actor, casting director, and acting teacher. His early career involved landing roles on television shows such as Family Ties and Cagney and Lacey. He then appeared alongside Robert Redford, Demi Moore, and Woody Harrelson in Indecent Proposal, as well as Johnny Depp and Bill Murray in the Tim Burton film Ed Wood. In the 90s he became one of Hollywood’s most esteemed casting directors, working on films such as Unhook the Stars, She’s So Lovely, The Notebook, Alpha Dog, Con Air, Rush Hour 1 & 2, and the soon-to-be-released film All Star Weekend, directed by Jamie Fox and starring Robert Downey, Jr.  What you will learn: How Matthew’s involvement in the New York punk scene, and growing up around famous people, influenced his decision to act. [02:51-09:33] How his father influenced his interest in acting, and how he got his big break at a young age on a Bernardo Bertolucci film dealing with mature storylines. [09:33-18:13] How the success he found in film acting at a young age was a negative influence during his adolescence; What made him realize he was on the wrong path, and how he relaunched his career after a “wakeup call.” [18:13-23:46] The rarity of loyalty in Hollywood and how he got lucky in that regard with a close-knit group of friends he met on set in the 80s who continue to work together to this day. [23:46-27:54] How his decades-long friendship with A-list film director Nick Cassavetes has resulted in their collaboration on all of Nick's films. How and why he transitioned from acting to casting, and how his blunt honesty and candor have served him well in the industry. [27:54-36:44] What it was like casting The Notebook, what the casting process is like generally, and why the casting business has become more difficult in recent years. [36:44-48:56] What Matthew saw in young and relatively unknown actors like Amanda Seyfried and Ben Foster that made him want to cast them in Alpha Dog; his thoughts on the impressive number of well-known actors whose careers he’s helped launch over the years. [48:56-55:33] Matthew’s experience working on Alpha Dog; remembering Anton Yelchin. [55:33-1:01:29] How he found James Gandolfini for a role in Crimson Tide with Denzel Washington and how Gandolfini almost got fired from the film on the first day of shooting. [1:01:29-1:06:24] How Matthew found a new passion in teaching acting classes, and why being a successful actor with experience in the industry helps set him apart from other acting coaches. [1:06:24-1:11:26] Why actors shouldn’t take rejection personally. [1:11:26-1:15:20] Resources: Matthew Barry’s: Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, IMDb page Matthew Barry Teaches

Well, what a relief that was. After a 17-day break, which followed three Premier League defeats on the spin, Everton returned to action and returned to winning ways tonight with a 3-0 victory at Cardiff City which, come the end, was every bit as comfortable as the final scoreline suggested. Two goals from top-scorer Gylfi Sigurdsson and one from Dominic Calvert-Lewin ensured the Blues stopped the rot and set themselves up nicely for Sunday’s Merseyside at Goodison Park. But this podcast concentrates on what happened at the Cardiff City Stadium and starts with the verdict of our Everton FC correspondent and reporter, Phil Kirkbride and Adam Jones. You'll then hear host Paul Wheelock's conversation with Cardiff-based Everton season-ticket holder Matthew Barry, who for once had a short trip home after attending tonight’s match. Before the podcast ends with the full audio from Marco Silva’s press conference who I’m sure speaks for us all when he says he hopes the result turns around the Blues’ season. And, before we go, just to let you know some tickets remain for our first-ever Royal Blue Live event, held at the Baltic Market in Liverpool city centre on Wednesday (February 27).Tickets cost £5, include a free drink, and can be purchased by clicking HERE. This week’s View from the Gwladys Street fan podcast is brought to you by host Ian Croll and guests, Rob Astell, Connor O’Neill and Matthew Barry. A much needed win has given everyone associated with Everton a massive boost. After a torrid couple of weeks, the 2-0 win over Bournemouth at Goodison Park has definitely stopped the rot. The lads discuss how important the win was, not just for the club and the fans, but for Silva himself. How much pressure has he really been under? The Keane and Zouma partnership seems to be thriving, but what does this mean for Yerry Mina? Is Lucas Digne to be considered the best left-back in the Premier League? And why Jordan Pickford needs to be less erratic. As ever, we finish on the fan questions which have been sent in via the Royal Blue Facebook page.  For information regarding your data privacy, visit acast.com/privacy

Another home game, another win for Everton. But while the performance was not entirely convincing, a seventh goal of the season for top-scorer Gylfi Sigurdsson was enough to beat Cardiff City 1-0 and earn the Blues a fourth straight victory at Goodison Park. And, just for good measure, it also lifted them into the top six.So little wonder, then, it is a happy Post-Game podcast. The pod kicks off with the considered thoughts of our Everton FC correspondent Phil Kirkbride and Everton FC reporter Adam Jones. You then get the verdict of season-ticket holder Matthew Barry, who had particular reason to be pleased by the outcome. And the show rounds off with the full audio from Blues boss Marco Silva's press conference.
