BONUS EPISODE ALERT! Join me and today’s guest Max Vernon (book, music and lyrics - The View Upstairs) as we talk all about bringing his off-Broadway musical to London, being a queer creative in the theatre industry and the unique challenges when writing a show based on a forgotten piece of LGBTQ history. ____ Connect with Max on Twitter: @MaxVernon Instagram: @frauleinsallybowels ____ Book tickets to see The View Upstairs, currently playing at the Soho Theatre until August 24th 2019: http://theviewupstairs.co.uk/ Check out the original cast recording, now available to download and stream on iTunes & Spotify! ____ About the show: Millennial fashion designer Wes has just purchased an abandoned building, but little does he know that this forgotten gem was the UpStairs Lounge, a vibrant ‘70s gay bar in the French Quarter of New Orleans, starting an exhilarating journey of seduction and self-exploration in the summertime heat with the rush of lust, sex and incense mixed in the air. A provocative new musical, The View UpStairs is inspired by the true story of the 1973 arson attack that was the largest single attack against the LGBTQ+ community until the Pulse Nightclub shootings in Florida in 2016. Filled with a collection of beautiful love songs and power rock ballads, this is a musical about friendship, community, how far we’ve come and how far we still have yet to go. It is a story of hope; and it’s a rainbow rollercoaster you do not want to miss. We saw the new immersive musical The View UpStairs, and the man who wrote the whole thing is here to debrief with us! Writer and composer Max Vernon talks to us about the history of the project, why he thinks it's important to tell depressing stories in a fun way, and the exciting combinations of understudy tracks that keep the show just a little bit dangerous. Speaking of danger, we also reveal to him that there was a special guest star at our performance who almost sent us into cardiac arrest. This is our fourth and final episode of our Let Me Ascertain You: Sex Variants 1941, taking inspiration from a study conducted in the 1930’s by Dr. George Henry in which he interviewed a couple hundred individuals and cataloged data such as a complete family history with symbols to indicate who had what venereal disease, tuberculosis, alcoholism, who committed suicide, who was psychotic. We set some of these personal histories to song and brought others to life with monologues performed at Joe’s Pub in NYC. To kick us off, we’ll start with a song written and performed by Max Vernon taking inspiration from the case study of Moses I. And the little intro you’ll hear is taken from Dr. Henry’s own words, performed by Trey Lyford. Also featured, actor Nedra McClyde performing the case study of Myrtle K, a vaudeville comedian. After that, we’ll wrap things up with a sea shanty, “Odd Girl Out” written by Jill Sobule, inspired by Roberta H., and performed by Marykate O’Neil. Many thanks to everyone involved in this project and our project contributors Ian Daniel, Joel Glassman, Amina Henry, Leicester Landon, and Benjamin Viertel.
