Kerry and Collin are joined by first-time guest, longtime friend, film critic Nick Digilio, who claims "The Ref"--starring Dennis Leary, Kevin Spacey and Judy Davis--is his favorite Christmas film of all time. Collin has similar feelings and wanted to wait until the movie had an anniversary, so it could be featured prominently in the December line-up, when the movie would hopefully get more attention than it did back in the day. Why did the studio botch its release? Do people still make fruitcake jokes today? How did screenwriter Richard LaGravenese get his revenge on a Chicago film critic with this film? Also, Nick's choice for a Christmas episode/TV special is none other than the classic "Pee-Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special." It truly is one of the best Christmas specials of all, as evidenced by the joy everyone experienced making it and the joy it continues to bring to audiences several  generations later. (NOTE: Apologies for some of the sound quality on this one. It's mostly in the first 15 minutes).

In which the Mister and Monsters join me in reviewing THE FISHER KING (1991), from writer Richard LaGravenese, the film is directed by Terry Gilliam.   A narcissistic radio host, Jack Lucas (Jeff Bridges), has it all and is riding high on a wave of fame, success and adulation. However, one day his reckless words inadvertently inspire a tragic event, plunging him into a self-destructive spiral. He crosses paths with a mentally ill man, Parry (a luminescent Robin Williams) and together they embark on a surreal and transformative journey to find meaning, redemption and recovery.  The film clocks in at 2 h and 17 m, is rated R and is to buy/rent on Prime Video. This week Megan saw Yorgos Lanthimos's KINDS OF KINDNESS (2:28), a whackadoo triptych fable starring Jesse Plemons, Emma Stone, and Willem Dafoe. It's getting all kinds of raves but also some drubbings — including Megan's. Evan, Megan, and Dave watched CONVERSION (15:15), Zach Meiners's documentary about survivors — the film's director, an ex-Mormon woman, and a famous drag queen — of so-called conversion therapy (programs designed to make queer kids straight, but in reality it's trauma-inducing psychobabble). We had mixed reactions. Finally, everyone weighed in on A FAMILY AFFAIR (45:45), a rom-com directed by Richard LaGravenese  and written by Carrie Solomon starring Joey King, Nicole Kidman, and Zac Efron as three garbage humans apparently more interested in ruining each others' lives than anything else. Reactions were not mixed. But we had fun taking it apart! And over on Patreon, our Pride Month poll winner is TRICK, a 1999 gay rom-com starring Christian Campbell, J.P. Pitoc, and — that's right — Tori Spelling.

"Beautiful Creatures is a 2013 American romantic gothic fantasy film based upon the 2009 novel of the same name by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl". - wikiWe would not call it romantic per say, rather a hormone driven novel. For once though the film was better than the book. Don't agree? Have a listen and see if we can convince you. We discuss everything from sex to the hard and soft rules of magic in this episode. It turned out to be more of a commentary on social norms that we intended but hey that is art for you. It was fun to make this episode and while I will never read the book again, the film is something I'll be happy to have on in the background. We all wish we could do magic right? I swear a bit more than usual in this episode but what can I say? I am passionate about teenage literature. We are about half way through our Fantasy Season 1 so thank you for listening, we appreciate the love. On this episode we look at films on talk show breakdowns. This comes naturally to us since we already have a failed talk show in this very podcast, so we watch two other gentlemen dealing with their own personal demons in the format. In Oliver Stone’s 1988 film adaptation of Eric Bogosian’s stage play, Bogosian plays Barry. A rude, contemptuous talk show host becomes overwhelmed by the hatred that surrounds his program just before it goes national. Barry and Talk Radio go up against the shock jock Jack, played by Jeff Bridges in the 1991 movie THE FISHER KING, directed by Terry Gilliam and written by Richard Lagravenese. Here instead of a breakdown on air, we see the damage that can be done off air, as an offhand remark sends a listener into a restaurant with a gun, where he guns down a man’s wife and causes the husband played by Robin Williams to hide his grief by living in a fantasy world. Heavy stuff, with strange doses of comedy make for a perfect double feature to followup new to video WELCOME TO ME.

On this episode we look at life, and in particular a sex life, immediately after divorce. In the 1998 Richard Lagravenese film LIVING OUT LOUD, Holly Hunter drinks one too many martinis and finds herself the target of a crush from the bellhop in her building, and Steve Carell finds himself the target of ladies man Ryan Gosling in CRAZY STUPID LOVE. All of these shenanigans of the newly single inspired by the great new film GOODBYE TO ALL THAT starring Paul Schneider and we get a chance to talk to the writer and director of this new release, Angus MacLachlan.

After the financial disaster that was 'The Adventures of Baron Munchausen,' Terry Gilliam needed a way to prove to the studio brass that he could make a great movie that was on budget and made money at the box office. He found it in 'The Fisher King,' the film he made and released in 1991. Join us — Pete Wright and Andy Nelson — as we continue our Terry Gilliam series with the fantastic 'The Fisher King.' We talk about why this film works so well for us, even if Roger Ebert clearly didn't click with it. We discuss the brilliant 4 leads in the film — Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams, Mercedes Ruehl and Amanda Plummer — and look at what each of them bring to their own roles that make them work so well. We chat about the brilliance of Richard LaGravenese's script and how honest he portrays the characters yet how efficient the script is as well, giving full portrayals of characters even for minor characters (like the brilliant Michael Jeter). And we cover how this film succeeded at the box office and even gathered a handful of Oscar nominations, showing people that Gilliam can make films that make money. It's a wonderful film that we have a great time talking about. Tune in! Hey! You know what would be awesome? If you would drop us a positive rating on iTunes! If you like what we’re doing here on TNR, it really is the best way to make sure that this show appears when others search for it, plus, it’s just a nice thing to do. Thanks!!
