Welcome to the second episode of Podcasting for Authors. In the last episode, we covered a lot of the basics - and mostly mental exercises. We looked at the importance of knowing your audience, your why, your goal, and brainstorming for your topic. Today, we’ll be looking at your podcast title, cover artwork, and media hosting options. Podcast Title The title for your podcast is an important thing to consider. For this, it may be obvious to you if you are basing the podcast on a book you wrote, but here are some things to consider first. The most important thing is how the title relates and appears to your audience. The title may be obvious to you and loyal followers, but maybe it involves some inside joke or information that an “outsider” may not quickly resonate with. Make sure that your title: Relates to your audience (refer back to ep 101) Clearly conveys the topic of your podcast without being too long Can fit onto the artwork and be clearly read (more on this later) You’ll want to avoid these mistakes: Don’t be overly clever with your title Don’t stuff keywords The overall idea is to make sure that your title is clear, not just clever. It is one of the first things people will see (as well as your artwork), and as such, the title needs to grab their attention. Podcast cover artwork As an author, you understand the importance of the cover for your book. In many ways, the cover artwork is the same for your podcast. It’s one of the first things to catch someone’s attention as they are swipping through the options of what to listen to. You want to make sure that your artwork will stand out. I’m not a graphic designer, but here are some tips to help: Make sure that title on your artwork can be easily read when it is shrunk down Don’t make the artwork too busy https://theaudacitytopodcast.com/how-to-make-great-podcast-cover-art-tap191/ Technical specs to watch: Smallest size: 1400x1400 pixels Largest size: 3000x3000 pixels File size needs to be 500 KB or less Needs to be JPG or PNG It is possible to go cheap with designing your cover art yourself or going to Fiverr, but many times you get what you pay for. Some “designers” on Fiverr have been caught stealing work from other people and sites, but you could be liable for using it. It’s best to go to a reputable source to get design work done. Even though it’s more expensive, you’ll have a better product, not to mention more peace of mind. Media hosting options When it comes to hosting your mp3 files for your podcast, there are several good options to choose from as well as many false ideas to watch out for. First of all there is a difference between website hosting and media hosting. Media files, like audio and video should not be hosted on your website host. Some have done this and been fine, but many have had their website shut down because of using too much bandwidth on their “unlimited” host. This is because the way that media files are downloaded or streamed is different than text and pictures, and regular website hosts are not optimized for that type of downloading. My personal recommendation for media hosting is Libsyn. I started in early 2013 and this is the only media host I’ve used personally. I am now an affiliate with them (enter the code ‘JOSH’ when checking out), but that was only after being please with their service for several years. I have also heard good things about Blubrry, Speaker, and Podbean. Dave Jackson from the School of Podcasting has shared his requirements when it comes to choosing a media host: Don't mess with my file. What I upload is what I want people to download. Give me the ability to have an unlimited back catalog (unlimited storage) Don't limit my audience size (unlimited bandwidth) Don't control my feed, and make it easy to leave if I choose to do so. I need to be able to put in an iTunes redirect script. Give me support. Charge me for your service so you can stay in business Give me stats so I can see what's working. It would be nice if they were accurate. I hope this episode helps you to clarify your title, design your artwork, and understand media hosts. You can go to the website to get specific recommendations and further help. In the next episode, we’ll talk about choosing the right format for your podcast. If you’d like to check out more resources, go to PodcastingAuthors.com. This will take to the podcast page on my website that links to the other episodes and a growing list of resources. It's another battle of podcast media hosting versus podcast self hosting in our 150th episode as we run down the workflow on how to start a podcast (from a technical perspective). SP talks about media hosting and Stephen talks about self-hosting. We break this down into four main sections: - Ground Work - Setting Up Your Podcast - Posting - Misc Information In this week's Better Podcasting Download, we review the new Spotify podcaster dashboard and what it means for people who are self-hosting their podcast and what you should do if you're already a podcaster in Spotify. Additionally in the Download, we talk about the new Skype 7 end of life. During the Better Podback, we chat about a recent exchange with blubrry and their Podcast Directory of 600,000 shows (and how a lot of them are dead). Finally, Stephen shares a personal story about how he's STILL LEARNING 150 episodes later. You want to launch a podcast, and in the past, I've talked about how there are 27 steps to launch a podcast (you might want to read that first). Today I want to cover this episode from a new angle and address some of the mistakes I am seeing on episode 636 of the School of Podcasting. If you missed the previous list it was Step 1: Pick Your Topic Step 2: Decide if you're podcasting solo or with cohost(s). Step 3: Pick how you will podcast. Step 4: Pick where will you podcast? Step 5: Pick a name. Step 6. Buy the Hardware Step 7. Buy Software Step 8 is purchasing web hosting Step 9 is installing WordPress Step 10 is to get your WordPress installation ready to podcast Step 11 is making your website look good. 12. Domain Name 13. Graphics 14. Intro Music. (optional) 15. Media Hosting (for your mp3 files) 16. Organize Your Content 17. Record Your Content 18. Edit Your Content 19. Assemble Your Episode 20. Add ID3 Tags 21. Upload your media 22. Write Your Show Notes 23. Copy the Media URL and Paste It Into Your Post (optional) 24. Click Publish 25. Set Up Tags for iTunes 26> Make Sure your Feed is Valid 27. Submit Your Podcast to Apple Podcasts What is the Goal of Your Podcast? You need to know this. How will know if it's successful? Is it a certain number of downloads? Is it a certain number of sales? Is it to position you as an expert? Does Your Podcast Move You Toward Your Goal? So if the goal of your show is to help build an email list, did you remember to tell people about your list. If it's to build your consulting clients, did you mention you are available for consulting? Has Someone Who Is Your Target Audience Given You Honest Feedback? Have You Checked to See If You Are Unique? There are at least five shows named "outside the box", and six shows named, "The Feed." If you name your show identical to another show, not only may you be opening the door to legal action, but these people have a head start and you will have a hard time ranking for that phrase. What you NEED to Launch a Podcast Artwork: The artwork is SQUARE with a minimum dimension of 1400X1400 and a maximum dimension of 3000X3000. The FILE SIZE needs to be less than 500 kb. Failure to meet these specifications can get you rejected, and cause your show not to update, and in some cases get removed from Apple. A Valid RSS feed. That feed will have a description of your show. Along with the author/hosts(s) of the show, categories, and an email address. This is typically entered into your media host (more on that later) or whatever tool you are using to create an RSS feed A media host. I was a Libsyn customer for 10 years before being a customer, but I feel Libsyn.com is the best. For other thoughts on podcast media hosting see this post A quick note: Stay away from Anchor or any other free media hosts. I've seen multiple attempts at free media hosting over the years and it always ends badly One published episode. You can't upload a bunch of episodes as drafts, submit your show to Apple and other directories, and the flip a switch. While many people will tell you to launch with 3, 4, 10, 30 episodes, I'm here to tell you that you can launch with as many as you want (please note they DO NOT automatically download when someone subscribes, your audience needs to manually download them) but you only NEED one. The Podcast Launch Schedule I see so many people picking a launch date and then trying to fit their podcast into it. This is like picking a time for Thanksgiving dinner and you've never cooked a turkey before. You need to have a knowledge of how long it takes to cook the bird, and likewise, you wouldn't call everyone to the table if the meal wasn't done. They would all come running to the table and ask, "Hey, where's the food?" I spent last week with Rob Walch the VP of Podcaster Relations at Libsyn.com (the oldest, largest podcast media hosting company - get a free month using the coupon code sopfree ) and he recommended to start submitting your show to directories ONE MONTH in advance and I agree and here is why: While it may take 3-5 days to be listed in Apple, in some cases it takes a few extra days for the artwork to show up (after you've been approved) and in some cases even more, time before you are shown in the results of a search You want to have your show listed in as many apps as possible. Right now I recommend Apple, Spotify, Stitcher, TuneIn, Google Podcasts, and if it's still alive Google Play Music. As I write this in September of 2018, Google Play Music is on a respirator and I would worry about it last. The reason for this is people get comfortable with their apps and devices. I use Overcast on my iPhone. If someone wants me to listen to their podcast and it's only available in Stitcher, there is a very strong chance I will never hear their episode. It costs nothing but a few minutes to submit your show to these places. I've got tutorials on how to do all of this at the School of Podcasting Once Your Ready Pick Your Date Once you are listed in the directories, then you can pick your date and start building the buzz (OK, you can start building the buzz when you submit to the directories). A musician is not going to plan a CD release party (remember those), or an author won't setup a book reading and autograph session until they have their products in their hand. With this in mind, I strongly suggest you do NOT pick your date until you are listed in all the directories. Teach Your Audience How To Subscribe Don't just tell your audience, "I'm in Apple podcasts." SHOW THEM how to subscribe. You can take screenshots on your phone (on an iPhone hold down the button on the right side of the phone and press the home button). If you have an android phone just press the Volume Down and Power buttons at the same time, hold them for a second, and your phone will take a screenshot. You want to guide your audience into being subscribers. This is the difference between a clerk at Home Depot answer the question "Where are the plastic tarps?" by saying "Isle 8" or taking me to aisle 8 and putting one in my hand. In that scenario, the clerk knows I'm walking out of the store with a plastic tarp. You want your audience walking out with a subscription. If you want you can use a video I made that explains how to subscribe to a podcast in Apple podcasts at www.learntosubscribe.com One thing I should mention here, while I'm assuming you have episode(s) recorded is I also assume you have a domain name. Do you have your own website? That's up to you ( I recommend it) but at least have a domain name so your website is Did You Know Siri Can Help You Subscribe to podcasts? Get on Facebook live and ask Siri on your iPhone to subscribe to your podcast. Most of the time she gets it right. Get Your Social Media Ready To Go Make sure you have your Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc ready to go with graphics, etc. There is a tool called thunderclap.it which enabled you to work with your friends so you can post a tweet on their account and so your message goes out to a huge group of people at the same time. As I write this thunderclap.it is having issues with their website (and may have gone out of business). With this in mind, supply your group of friends with a pre-written tweet that they can retweet, etc. Get Your Attitude in Check If you want your podcast to be a business eventually, then you better write a business plan on how you're going to be different, better, and more successful than your competition. I will say that it takes YEARS to generate a sizeable income. In the book "beyond powerful radio" by Valerie Geller she points out that it takes three years to build an audience on radio. Wil Schroter is the Founder + CEO @ Startups.co say that it takes at least 4 years just to get pointed toward a real business. According to a post on Quora.com Amazon started in July 1994. They reported their first profit in Jan. 2004 for the last quarter of 2003. With this in mind, get ready for the long haul. This is not a sprint. It is a marathon. How Many Downloads Should My Podcast Get? I have said the equation for downloads is Total Value in the Episode Multiplied by The total amount of intelligent promotion = Total Number of Downloads Also, keep in mind, it's not all downloads. You can see so many benefits of podcasting. I spotlight them in this podcast as a "Because of My Podcast" segment Conclusion Make sure your show is good. Get your target audience to give you feedback You only need one episode to launch, but many people launch with three. Use the right tools, and make sure you are following image guidelines. Don't start promoting your show until you are listed in the top directories Get everyone to SUBSCRIBE to your show when it launches Realize it will take time to grow your audience Common Podcast Launch Mistakes Using the wrong tool for the job. Podcaster who host their media on a web host (instead of a media host), free media hosts, companies that minor in podcast (Squarespace, Soundcloud) Only promoting Apple. In May 2018, 54.4 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers were using a Google Android device. Apple was the second most popular smartphone operating system with a 44.3 percent market share. source Picking a launch date a few days from today (and not knowing the time frame it takes) Horrible titles of episodes ( putting the name of the show in the title along with the episode number) Overthinking everything and Underthinking the process Not checking to see if the podcast name is already in place. Not knowing how to use their equipment (bad mic technique, and bad microphones like the Blue Yeti, Blue Snowball, that are not bad, but you need to know how to use them) Thinking a "Big launch" equals a big success. This is like saying a big wedding will lead to a happy marriage. Worrying about Apple charts, and new and noteworthy. Focus on your audience, and make it easier to interact with you instead. The charts do not deliver much of a boost, and their validity is under suspicion at the moment. Rating and Reviews are nice to have, but SUBSCRIBERS are the better thing to cultivate (which is why you want to lead them) People are spamming their name. So if I had "School of Podcasting" |make money podcasting, Pat Flynn, John Lee Dumas that would be spam. In the age of social media is email still relvant? If so, how do you grow your list? What makes a good lead magnet? Do I need a lead magnet? This is all discussed in episode 630 of the School of Podcasting Sponsor: Podcast Engineering School [1:38] Podcast Engineering School – next semester starts September 18th and runs through October 30th. The classes are live and Chris packs the 2-hour classes with tons of information Today I did a quick search on Indeed.com for “podcast engineer” and saw quite a few options Program Includes: LIVE Interactive Online Training Two Mentoring Sessions with Chris Curran Major Discounts on Software and Plugins Lifetime Access to the PES closed community Certificate of Completion EARLY BIRD PRICING IS NOW – SIGN UP TODAY AND SAVE BIG https://podcastengineeringschool.com/ What Makes a Good Lead Magnet? 3:23 Thanks to Win Charles from the Ask Win show, Matt Rafferty from the Author Inside You podcast, and Jerry Williams from the FBI Retired podcast for contributing Ryan Deiss at Digital Marketer defines a lead magnet as “a small chunk of value that solves a specific problem for a specific market that is offered in exchange for an opt-in. My buddy (and co-host of the Podcast Review Show) Erik K Johnston did a whole episode about lead magnets. Today we talk about email lists and why you might want to start using one. OptinMonster (which is a great tool/plugin for capturing leads) breaks it into seven parts: Solves a real problem – if your lead magnet doesn’t solve a real problem that your customer avatar has, or if it doesn’t give them something they really want, it won’t work at all. Promises one quick win – your lead magnet should promise (and deliver) one quick win for your avatar. In other words, it should help them to easily achieve something. Super specific – don’t create a lead magnet about something general. The more specific you are about the benefit of your lead magnet, the better it will convert leads. Quick to digest – PDF checklists tend to convert really well because they are so quick and easy to digest. eBooks or lengthy reports may make your prospects feel overwhelmed. High value – your lead magnet should have both high perceived value and high actual value. Instantly accessible – your lead magnet will work best if it is something that can be delivered right away. People love instant gratification. Demonstrates your expertise or Universal Value Proposition – when someone consumes your lead magnet, it should demonstrate your expertise or your unique value proposition. This helps turn leads into customers down the road. Here is a list of 69 effective lead magnets (no email required) Advantages of an Email List? 17:44 The biggest advantage of an email list is you are one click away from your desired call to action, and more than likely you have someone's undivided attention. Most people (hopefully) are not reading their email while driving, etc. You can email your list directly and not have the information appear on your website. You are in contact with your engaged audience. 2000 Facebook followers is not the same as 2000 email subscribers According to a 2015 study, 3.57% is the average open rate. So if you have 1000 subscribers, 35 will open your email Derek Halpern of Social Triggers sent his latest post to his email list and his twitter account Here are the results he got: 50 people clicked on his link from Twitter 1,200 people clicked on his link from his email list His email list might be twice as large as his Twitter following but it still generated about 24 times more clicks. Even your grandma has email. Where To Start? 21:38 Mailchimp is many times the place you start. Why? It' starts free (but if your list grows can be expensive). There are many, many companies out there. I've used Aweber before moving to Convert kit. Aweber is $19/month for 500 subscribers or .038 cents per subscribers Convert kit is $29/month up to 1000 subscribers or .029 cents per subscriber MailChimp is free up to 2000 subscribers but limits the number of emails sent out in the month to 12,000. If you have 1000 subscribers and wanted unlimited emails per month it would be $15 a month at Mailchimp Do I NEED an Email List? Do you need an email list when you starting a podcast, no. But, I hear time and time again that someone in year three pivots their show in a new direction and really, really wishes they had started an email list. Be Very Careful With Affiliate Links Both Amazon Associates (amazon's affiliate program) and Mailchimp have it in their terms of service that sending email with affiliate links is against the rules. Take the Time To Learn Your Email System One of the things you should do upon signing up for an email service is to take the time to go through whatever tutorials they have. For example, I use Convert kit and to make a long story short I'm not using half of the features. When I was at Podcast Movement, I went to their booth, explained my situation and the rep show the features I could be using, and show how easy it is to use. With this in mind, I still need to take the time to learn the system. There is no sense spending money on a system that sits dormant. Example of Podcast Lead Magnets Erik K Johnson has 17 Ultimate Podcast Interview Questions David Hooper of Big Podcast has 25 podcast episode templates (bottom of the page) Daniel J Lewis has 20 things you should do before recording every podcast episode (right sidebar) He also has an email list devoted to pointing out great deals at Podcastingdeals.com I have a resource to help you write better Podcast Episodes titles at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/headlines I also have a video series for those thinking of getting into podcasting that walks you through the first few steps at www.schoolofpodcasting.com/babysteps The Question of the Month 28:50 If you've attended any podcast event, was it worth it? Show" which helped launch 98.5 The Sports Hub to improbably beat WEEI in the Boston sports media rankings in just a year. D.A. hits on making his mark in a media market he was unfamiliar with in Kansas City and how that readied him for the Boston market where his show helped revive the Bruins as they rose to prominence again and ultimately won a Stanley Cup in 2011. Also looks back on leaving the city for his home in New York, the Olympics today, Ryan Lochte, and Tom Brady's scissorgate.

Most membership sites, will have a need to protect the following types of media: Video, Audio, PDF, Zip, Word Docs - well, don't use word unless you have to, because not everyone would have word installed, but you get the idea. Different types of files need to be protected. But for the most part, we're talking about video, audio and PDF reports. If these files are stored right on your web site, AND if you have a bunch of these files that are also big in size - like over 10 MB, for eg., then a lot of your members viewing and downloading them from your site simultaneously will use up a lot of resources on your server – when I say resources, I mean server memory, server speed, server bandwidth, etc – basically your site can get overloaded. Which means your site could slow down considerably. Have you heard of the "Digg Effect" or "Slashdot Effect"? Many years ago, there used to be a social bookmark sharing site called Digg.com. If you have heard of Reddit.com, then Digg and Reddit were competitors. Big time traffic on both sites. Digg just slowly went away. But getting your site's URL on the front page of Digg, meant that you could end up getting tens of thousands of visitors in a very short time period. And that usually crashed most WordPress sites that were on shared hosting. Which is why WordPress unfortunately got a bad rap years ago. And things have changed a lot since then, and there are tools you can use today to make sure your site can withstand a sudden influx of traffic. But I'm not talking about just site visitors. I'm talking about a large number of your visitors and paying members, downloading PDF's, watching video, listening to audio, and if all of those files are stored on your site, then your site could end up becoming super slow, and then might eventually even crash. And your host will have to restart your server, and then the whole thing could happen all over again. On top of that, there are also bandwidth charges that your host will charge you with for all of those downloads, which are usually not very cheap. Don’t put too much faith in your web host’s “Unlimited Bandwidth” clause, because if you read the fine-print carefully, you’ll see that as per their TOS, if you consume large amounts of bandwidth and use too much of the server resources, this could cause other web sites (belonging to others) on the same server to slow down and have a degrade in performance, especially if you are on a shared hosting account. And your host could consider this as abuse of their terms of service, and they could either slap you with huge bandwidth or server utilization fees, or ask you to upgrade to a more expensive hosting package, or may even ask you to take your web site elsewhere because you’re causing issues for other site owners on the same server. Instead, if your media files are stored on Amazon S3.... (listen to the episode for the rest)

Dream Team of 5 Tools You Need To Create A Membership Site. Let's do a quick flashback. Back in April 2015, LinkedIn purchased online learning website Lynda.com for a cool $1.5 billion. Lynda.com, at its very core, is nothing but a membership site offering online courses with videos and checklists and PDF document downloads. So when you have a membership site that earns recurring revenue, you increase the value of your business as a whole, and that makes it easier to sell your site to a prospective buyer in the future, if you ever decide to walk away from it all. So a web site with recurring revenue has greater lifetime customer value, which will help you sell your site for a lot more than if you had just one-time products. Which is why a site like Lynda.com could get a valuation of 1.5 billion. Of course, they had millions of members, but the point is, that they weren't just regular members, but members paying a monthly fee. And you too can create your own mini version of Lynda.com. Here are the 5 members of Ravi Jayagopal's Membership Site Dream Team: 1) Content Management System 2) Theme 3) Media Host 4) Payment Processor 5) Membership Plugin & Marketing Platform So which ones did Ravi choose for his dream-team? Listen to the show to find out!

You may want to start out just making content and then add the callers and live streaming later. Audello Final Thoughts [13:35] Dave lost his cool in a video when it appears a company lied to him about the length of time a discount was available. We have to make sure our facts are accurate. I was surprised that I was basing some actions on facts that have changed over time. Looking back I should have waited until I had really tested it to report on it. Dave will be checking out simplecast.fm in the future. Jim and Dave are currently playing with Media Fire. Come up with a list of criteria to base your facts on. Volume Levels [41:00] Tools mentioned: auphonic.com When traveling I was surprised on how much different shows had VERY different volumes levels. In general Dave is not a fan of free podcast hosting. While it may be cool for a while, NUMEROUS companies have tried this and they all go out of business eventually. Who is Scott Smith? Offending People Scott does a business with his podcasts like Motivation to Move. According to Mike he said something offended and Mike unsubscribed. You are not going to be able to avoid offending someone. You do the best you can.
Stats help you measure your audience and performance. Media hosting moves your podcast files away from your website server. But are either of these services really necessary for podcasting?
This is show # 14 for April 11th, 2014… iTunes Revisited Here we go again! I get a TON of iTunes related questions so I'm going to revisit what iTunes is when it comes to podcasting. How to get your show listed. How to KEEP your show listed. How to make your listing say what you want it to and other issues with the #1 place people find and listen to your podcast. Q. I uploaded my latest episode today and it's not in iTunes. A. The iTunes store listing and what appears in your feed are two different things. People that subscribe to your feed in iTunes will get the new episodes as you post them but the listing at iTunes can lag by a few days (or up to a week or so) behind your feed. There is no way to automatically tell iTunes that your feed is updated since they have removed their ping podcast feature. If you think there is a problem at iTunes please contact Apple Support at podcasts@apple.com Q. How do I get my podcast to show up under XXX keyword in search on iTunes? A. SEO on iTunes is a bit of a mystery, but, as near as I can tell, it works about the same as Google SEO but you have to wait longer for it to improve. Also, Apple gives more weight to shows that get a lot of subscribers. The best I can tell you is be patient and make your show title and description keyword rich like you would for google and bing. Q. When I upload my episode to itunes…… A. No you didn't! Stop it! … You do not UPLOAD to itunes. It is done by your RSS feed. You upload you show to your media host and you make a post on your website (if you do it the way I suggest) and your RSS feed, feeds iTunes and all the subscribers using iTunes. AGAIN!!! YOU DO NOT UPLOAD ANYTHING TO ITUNES… STOP IT!! Q. My show description / image / host name/ etc… won't change. I changed it 2 weeks ago and it's still the same as it was. A. Apple takes it sweet time updating things like show information, Cover Art and Host info. Be patient. I've see it take up to 3 weeks to update things. On the other hand, I've seen it take less than 3 hours in the case of Podcast Help Desk a couple of weeks ago. As long as your feed looks right, iTunes will update. It does seem that putting out a new episode will help speed up the process. Also, the more consistent you are, the quicker it will update things like that including your next episode. Q. Can I track how many people are subscribed in itunes? A. No, not really. You can not really track “subscribers” to your RSS feed or in itunes. You can, however, with Blubrry and Libsyn stats, figure out a rough guess. The more important stat is downloads. I will have another show focusing on stats soon, but the answer to the question is no.. This show brought to you by Blubrry.com Media Hosting…. Use the promo code nobs for a free month of podcast hosting at any level at blubrry.com The promo code also works for blubrry premium statistics 1 month free by using the promo code nobs. That will do it for this session. The Podcast Helpdesk is now closed until next week. If you would like me to answer your question, please email your question to podcasthelpdesk@gmail.com or use the speakpipe “Leave a voice comment” tab on the website. You can also tweet your question using the hashtag #podcasthelpdesk. I'm Mike Dell. Catch me next time!
This is show # 13 for April 1st, 2014… No Joke! This is the first “rebranded” show, now called Podcast Help Desk. Today I'm going to tell you how I rebranded this show including the website address, RSS feed, iTunes listing and everything. Step by step. First thing I did is get the new domain name. PodcastHelpDesk.com. I use Godaddy to get my domains and host my websites, but you can do this part using any registrar and host I'm sure. I had podcastingtechcoach.com going for a year or so and wordpress, powerpress and all my other plugins were installed and configured. Instead of starting from scratch, I decided I would just re-use the site I had and re-name it. Once I got the domain name, I went into the hosting part of godaddy and pointed the new domain name to the same directory as PodcastingTechCoach.com. At this point you could have typed “podcastingtechcoach.com' or “podcasthelpdesk.com” and you would get to the same place. (once the change propagates) It's called domain forwarding in most hosting control panels. The next step I did was to install a plugin called “Static Feed”. I configured it to take my powerpress feed (/feed/podcast/) and make it an xml file called Podcast.xml and put it in the root directory. I then made a 301 redirect in my .htacess file. Example below: RewriteEngine On RewriteBase / RewriteRule ^feed/podcast/ http://podcasthelpdesk.com/podcast.xml [L,R=301] What this does is make sure that if anyone hits the old feed which was podcastingtechcoach.com/feed/podcast/, it forwards it to the new feed at podcast help desk. It also tells iTunes and anyone subscribed in other programs, that the feed is changed permanently and to change where they look for new episodes. Stitcher is a bit different. If your show is listed on stitcher, you need to go in and manually tell it about the change. Just login to your partner account and edit your listing. It's not too hard. Blubrry and Tech Podcast Network. Both of these will pick up the change sooner or later, but I would (and did) go in and update it manually. In my case, it took iTunes just 1 day to pick up the change. Your mileage may vary with itunes. I've seen them take up to 3 weeks to pickup a 301 redirect. I suppose they are getting better. After all that I went in and did the rest of the rebranding on the website. Changed the title, tagline graphics and colors. This would also be a good time to change the theme in wordpress if you wanted. But be careful! Some themes do not play well with podcasting so be prepared to check things out before pressing on. Other things to think about is if your show has Twitter and facebook accounts. You will want to start new ones or rename the ones you have. Since this show isn't really about social media, I will leave that one up to you. This show brought to you by Blubrry.com Media Hosting…. Use the promo code nobs for a free month of podcast hosting at any level at blubrry.com The promo code also works for blubrry premium statistics 1 month free by using the promo code nobs. Tip of the week: This is more for listeners than for podcast producers. I'm sure most of you are listeners as well. Say you want to get a list of all the podcast feeds you listen to so you can subscribe on a new device or new podcast catching program. If you are using iTunes, just go to the podcasts area on your computer and right click on the title and select “Copy Podcast URL”. Then you can paste it into a doc or into your other program. If you want to get them all in an OPML format (Which most podcast catchers can use) Go to the View menu and make sure you have the sidebar on. Once it's on, right click on the word “podcasts” in the sidebar and click export. Then choose the format of the file you want. Save that to wherever you would like and you can email it to yourself so you can put it on your iphone, ipad, android tablet or phone. The OPML works with most podcast apps including the Apple P...
