Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Friday, Aug. 30, 2024. Support the local economy with West Virginia Grown products…a new restaurant is serving up delicious homestyle cooking in the Ohio Valley…and the Build WV Act provides tax incentives to grow middle income residential housing…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV AGRICULTURE – As local food continues to grow in popularity and consumers turn to healthier, fresher options, branding your products as local will be vital to increasing potential market opportunities. Developed in 1986, West Virginia Grown was designed to market West Virginia grown and made products to consumers. By placing the West Virginia Grown logo on a product, farmers and other producers are assuring buyers that product was grown or processed, with quality ingredients, in the Mountain State. Serving delicious, homestyle meals, Jusino's Family Restaurant recently celebrated their grand opening in Follensbee, West Virginia. Owner Robert Jusino says he has finally achieved his dream of having his own restaurant. He started out nearly 30 years ago as a prep cook and worked his way up to executive chef and running a few restaurants around the area. “Then I decided this was my passion, this is my dream and with a little help from some very good friends, we were able to make this happen,” he said. The restaurant is open seven days a week, serving breakfast and lunch. Check out Jusinos's Family Restaurant on Facebook to view their menu. Business leaders from the construction, real estate, and baking industries were in attendance to learn about the act and how the north central region of West Virginia, specifically the area within 20 miles of Browns Mill, was one of 16 regions throughout the state selected for this program. Meghan Smith, manager of business development for the West Virginia Department of Economic Development, said that when a new manufacturer moves to the area, they need to recruit workers. And recruiting workers requires the area to have adequate housing, so the Build WV Act is trying to spur the construction of that housing. Meghan Smith discusses how she became involved with the First Alert Weather Team and how she enjoys telling the stories of the Heartland.
It's time for another interview series! I've been a student of Meghan's through her insightful TikTok, and I knew that I had to talk to her about being in the epicenter of what became known as 'grunge' in Seattle in the late 80s/90s. We had a time and covered so much ground. Some of the points we chat about include: indie record culture, the death of paper concert tickets, working the famous Nirvana in-store show, and moving to Palm Springs, CA and opening a vintage store. I found out what it's really like to go viral online, views on fashion TikTok and IG, sustainability in fashion, and cap it off with a Henry Rollins anecdote. Enjoy!
Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Thursday, March 14, 2024. The WV School of Osteopathic Medicine graduates doctors in all specialities.. A $45,000 donation will bolster STEAM programming at the Ravenswood Innovation Center. And Berkeley County developers learn about the Build WV Act…on today's daily304. #1 – From BROOKEREVIEW – At its core, the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine has always been driven by one purpose — to educate students to pursue careers as primary care physicians in rural and underserved areas, especially in the Appalachian region. That principle is part of the school's mission. But students who graduate from WVSOM are prepared for careers in all specialties. WVSOM's Class of 2023 had a 100 percent residency placement rate. While most of those graduates still sought primary care specialties — 59 percent of them chose family medicine, internal medicine, pediatrics or internal medicine-pediatrics — non-primary care specialties such as emergency medicine and surgery also proved attractive to graduates. “Students come to WVSOM because they have a passion for the underserved, and they address underserved populations through various specialties,” said Abigail Frank, D.O., assistant dean for graduate medical education. “Many of our students are interested in primary care, and we also have students who are interested in surgery, anesthesia, radiology and emergency medicine. Then we have folks who go into internal medicine, which is primary care. Internal medicine also allows our alumni to go into fellowships like cardiology, nephrology or oncology.” Read more: https://www.brookereview.com/2024/03/03/primary-care-is-ingrained-in-wvsoms-mission-but-school-excels-at-preparing-students-for-any-specialty/ #2 – From WV PRESS – BHE Renewables Project has announced an investment in Jackson County's future. The foundation's $45,000 donation will bolster STEAM and technical programming through the district's new Ravenswood Innovation Center, according to Jackson County Schools Superintendent Will Hosaflook. “The BHE Foundation's generous investment in our Ravenswood Innovation Center echoes BHE Renewables' continued commitment and support of the communities in which they reside. This investment will help provide a path toward a better future for our students and in return will provide a better future for us all,” Hosaflook said. According to district officials, the Ravenswood Innovation Center will be the home of an engaging curriculum for students to harness their strengths of creativity, problem solving, and innovation while focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts/Agriculture, and Math. Since launching the STEAM initiative this past year, Jackson County Schools has instructed over 400 students a week, grades second through eighth, in their current STEAM program. The program serves to provide a myriad of skills, including hands-on activities, that will prepare students for job-specific opportunities in our community, as well as the nation. Passed in 2022, the Build WV Act is geared to assist West Virginia's growing communities in attracting much-needed housing development projects, especially in the area of middle-income housing. The act offers a state sales and use tax exemption for building materials and a 10-year property value adjustment refundable tax credit to offset building costs. Meghan Smith, manager of business and industrial development for the Development Office, told the group gathered that a revision to the act allows up to $150 million in overall costs of projects in any given fiscal year. The state fiscal year runs from July to June, she clarified. Tax incentives for projects that get approval for the Build WV Act include sales tax exemptions for contractors, subcontractors and all others associated with the project; a property value adjustment credit against the individual and corporate income tax, set at one-tenth per year for 10 years; and a potential business and occupancy tax exemption where applicable. Susan, your host, welcomes Meghan Smith Brooks to today's episode. Meghan is an Ordained Unity Minister and the author of Unraveling Grief: A Mother's Spiritual Journey of Healing and Discovery, which details her grief experience when she lost her son when he was just 19 years old. Meghan shares how she was able to pull herself out and find a sense of gratitude for this new path she has been set on in this week's episode. Key Takeaways: Meghan shares her grief story and the murder of her son. Meghan spent two months walking around like she wasn't in her body. How did Meghan find gratitude after she found out about her son's death? Meghan is so grateful that she had a spiritual foundation to stand on. Pain and loss are part of our human reality. Meghan still has moments when she wants to scream. Sometimes you have to forgive the people who killed your loved one, not for their sake, but yours. You can live in a dark hole when someone you love passes away, but it's up to you to get past that. Susan remembers her arguing with her husband about where to go to eat. It's a choice to be angry at someone. Grief is your teacher. It broke Meghan open. When Meghan wrote her book, it helped her oldest son cope. It becomes an ongoing blessing when you can be vulnerable and create something beautiful out of your pain. How does Meghan spiritually help people in grief? Every day you get to choose how you will show up and what you do to make a difference. Keep breathing; keep moving forward. Guest: Meghan Smith | Julian Gibb interviews Meghan Smith with Firm Foundation Youth Homes. Megan says, "My heart burns to be the hands and feet of Jesus; that's the great commission. He set us out to love those who are broken, outcast and beaten down by this world and this life. There's no greater fulfillment in life than to be walking side by side with Jesus and building up those that are hurting and broken who don't know him, but need to know who they are in him." Playing with Problems: Listening to Your Light with Meghan Smith I am excited to bring you episode number one of the Playing with Problems podcast! I'm extraordinarily grateful to my guest Meghan Smith for being the brave, vulnerable, wise, and fun human that dared to join me on this first adventure. This episode was eye-opening and powerful, and I know it can and will help many people. In this episode, Meghan and I go deep, we laugh, it gets emotional, and we create powerful awareness and breakthroughs that left Meghan "feeling a buzz all day" (which she shared later). Meghan is a spiritual teacher, leader, and coach. She is a former lawyer who graduated top of her class and left her success behind in choosing a life and work that makes her happy and fulfilled. She is also the Host of The Skeptic's Guide to a Spiritual Life podcast, a wife, and a mother of two amazing kids. As a coach, she supports high-achieving women to heal from dysregulated nervous systems, co-dependency, and addictive behaviors. Through a combination of ontological coaching and spiritual teaching, Meghan leads women through the transformational process of learning to surrender, allowing them to create highly satisfying, spacious, and prosperous lives. In this episode, we discuss: - Meghan's "successful life" as a lawyer, trustworthy, dependable, executed, intelligent, and at the top of their class, yet behind the scenes, was miserable -We define success (primarily outward or societal focused) and something we coined as "evolved success," which would include being happy and fulfilled -Her Rock Bottom -What gave her the ability to walk away, to change and transform her life -Her addiction to food and chaos, working the 12 steps and losing 120lbs -What is she currently struggling with? Her marriage is a place where she feels she keeps hitting her head against the wall. Her avoidant attachment style keeps her distant and disconnected, and she often feels like the worst wife and mother -We dig into separating her "dark" thoughts from her "light" thoughts and hear Meghan speak from each -Creating awareness around true self-acceptance, surrender, getting her needs met as a person, and mother, realizing she needs more structures to take care of herself You can connect with Meghan Smith here: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/coachmeghansmith/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/meghansmithcoach Website: www.meghansmithcoaching.com You can connect with Alex Terranova here: Instagram: @InspirationalAlex Website: www.TheDreamMason.com Email: Alex@TheDreamMason.com Alex Terranova, PCC, is one of the world's top and most sought-after Performance & Success Alchemists and Coaches. What is your current relationship with spirituality? We'll take a closer look at that in our coaching tip for the week. And in our interview segment, we'll be joined by Meghan Smith, a spiritual teacher, leader, and coach. Learn more about how Elena can support you here https://elenaarmijo.com/ Meghan completed the Accomplishment Coaching Program in Victoria, B.C. Canada in 2019 and stayed on in a leadership role with the company for an additional two years upon graduation. Her podcast “The Skeptic's Guide to a Spiritual Life” reflects her past as a very skeptical, logic-brained lawyer who had very little room for spirituality in her life. She is now passionate about bringing spirituality to very high-achieving, high-performing people in a way that allows them to explore. Elena and Meghan talk about how Meghan successfully starts the “spirituality” conversation with her clients. They talk about partnership in spirituality, the willingness to open up, and how to find the access point to start the conversation. Finally, they confront the challenges that come with partnership and the relationship to spirituality. Part of Meghan's journey includes her recovery from adrenaline addiction. She is an advocate of the 12-step process, and the wisdom that comes with it, and says that if there is any part of you that may have addictive tendencies to go find 12-step work immediately. Finally, Meghan invites you to really “get” and understand that you don't need “fixing”. There's nothing “wrong” with you. You're just having a human experience. In her Coaching Tip, Elena asks you about your relationship to whatever it is you believe. What is your current relationship to spirituality? Everyone has different versions of what spirituality means. The conversation around spirituality versus religion is a deeply layered conversation. Oftentimes when clients are confronted with limiting beliefs around something or STOPS, as we like to call it in the coaching world (where you are getting stopped around a concept or belief), it helps to look at the relationship to it. So instead of fighting against the beliefs that you have around God or the universe, or not believing in anything at all that's outside of yourself, it's easier to focus on who you are being about that belief. So, for me, there's a lot of gold in looking at the relationship to it. No matter what I believe and what my choice is, am I in alignment with it? Are my actions lining up with who I'm choosing to be and what I believe about it? Get clear about what's going on and then ask yourself: how do you want it to go? What kind of access would you enjoy with an ideal relationship with spirituality? What would it allow or make possible in your life? 2020 is over. The damage it did is not. And not just the physical damage, either; there was more than enough grief to go around, and grief has a tendency to die hard. On the final episode of Generation Cult, we wrap up Season 2 with a conversation with Meghan, an ex-Jehovah's Witness. She left as a young adult when the mental anguish she experienced within the organization threatened to take her life. But that departure sent her on a roller coaster of family detachments that she still rides to this very day. Although relieved to flee the bible-based religion, she continued to believe its teachings and was convinced she was going to die in Armageddon. So, she experimented with everything she had been taught not to do: She smoked cigarettes, tried a few drugs and worked on a pot farm. And she had a lot of sex. Eventually, she began to work in the sex industry as an escort. Find out what happened to Meghan and how she became the person she is today. Thank you so much for listening to Generation Cult. *This episode contains discussions of self-harm and sexuality and is not for younger listeners. When the City Podcast began more than five years ago, the thinking behind it was relatively simple. First, humanize local governemnt. The podcast created an opportunity for listeners to literally hear the voices and get to know the personalities of the people who spend their days serving the residents of our city, with the hope being that folks would recognize that all these "government bureaucrats" are, in fact, human beings, and that the reasons behind the policies enacted in the City of Spartanburg are human reasons. Second, we wanted to tell the story of Spartanburg at a time when its transformation was just beginning. We wanted to get to know the people behind that transformation and hear why Spartanburg mattered to them. Those initial episodes show then City Communications Manager Will Rothschild and then local resident Christopher George finding their footing, figuring out how exactly this podcast thing should be done. Over the years that followed, the rapport strengthened, the questions got better, the local resident became a City Staff member, and the podcast equipment got fancy enough to cut out the amateurish background noise...at least a little bit. With Rothschild's departure last year however, the podcast became a one-person show, and while we've done some compelling episodes since, the chemistry between two hosts that can make a simple interview more compelling wasn't there anymore. The essence of what the podcast had been was lacking in some ways. On today's podcast, we're addressing that issue and taking the City News Podcast back to its roots, bringing back the engaged local resident perspective that made the storytelling work in those early days, by introducing our new cohost, Meghan Smith. Previously , Meghan will allow us to take the podcast in directions we haven't yet explored, bringing to the show her passion for people and their stories, a deep wealth of local knowledge, and the perspective of someone who truly cares about Spartanburg, not just as a place to invest or a place to play, but as a real community, a place to create a home and raise a family. So join all of us at the City in welcoming our new City News Podcast cohost, Meghan Smith!
