The Dads are on holiday but will be back as usual from 20th April. In the meantime enjoy this special rereleased episode where we discuss LARS AND THE REAL GIRL...Original show notes below.______________“The lack of women directors in the industry is no joke. The top 100 films of 2019 were helmed by a total of 113 directors, 89.4 percent of whom were male and 10.6 percent of whom were female.” So said Women and Hollywood's Melissa Silverstein after the 2020 Golden Globes once again featured an all male lineup in the Best Director category in a year where Greta Girwig (Little Women) and Lulu Wang (The Farewell) have had a strong case for inclusion. With this in mind, the Bad Dads Top 5 this week features those movies directed by women, and some of our favourite movies are included. My sex doll and I have been together for 5 years this week. To celebrate our anniversary I thought I'd spice things up a little so I bought a book - the Karma Sutra for Dummies. And with that thought, let's move swiftly on to this weeks main feature: Lars and The Real Girl. Despite the sensational and ludicrous premise (a socially awkward young man pretends a sex doll is real), this thoughtful and uplifting film united the Dads for it's sensitive examination of what a community support network could look like for someone struggling with mental illness. The sex talk continues with a nostalgic look back at a recently relaunched favourite. Yes morph is making a comeback! Talk about 50 Shades of Clay. Aardman Animations  Epic Adventures of Morph hit the television screens earlier this month and you can hear our take on this once beloved classic. On this weeks episode we dive into some of the most talked about, and difficult, topics in pop culture today. Melissa Silverstein, founder and editor of Women and Hollywood, discusses the much too slow progress for women in Hollywood and the backlash towards the upcoming female driven Ghostbusters reboot. And we speak to critic Matt Zoller Settz on how he approaches Woody Allen’s films today, post allegations. We have seen some serious ticket sales for female driven blockbusters such as Twilight and The Hunger Games. So the backlash towards women busting ghosts has been surprising, and the hatred expressed on social media shocking. We ask Silverstein – has the landscape in Hollywood actually changed for women? As of late, there have been some touchy topics, hard conversations and sadness in the pop culture community. It has become difficult as an audience member, as a fan, to come to terms with a filmmaker, artist or public figure accused of a horrific act. From Woody Allen to Johnny Depp, there are many examples of this occurring. One of the reasons we wanted to speak to Matt Zoller Seitz was his very honest article titled “I believe Dylan Farrow” which explained the complexity of being a film critic and separating the art from the artist once allegations have been made or confirmed. We explore all of these topics and much more in this very important episode.

If you look only at the categories for acting, women come in for an equal share of the Oscars.  But peeking behind the velvet curtains, a different picture emerges.  Women are still a tiny minority in the movie business overall -- so much so the lack of opportunity has been dubbed the "celluloid ceiling." With Kirsty Lang Kirsty talks to actors Matthew Macfadyen and Stephen Mangan as they play the roles of Jeeves and Wooster in a new stage version of one of P G Wodehouse's much-loved books. The architect Frank Gehry, whose Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles feature the undulating metallic curves for which he has become known, opens a new exhibition of his work this week. Frank Gehry discusses his new sculptures, a series of artworks based on fish, a recurrent motif in his art and architecture, as well as his designs for the new development at Battersea Power station in London. Stanley Spencer's masterpiece is a series of murals he painted in a small chapel in the Hampshire countryside. The paintings depict his life on the Salonika front during World War I, but concentrate on the domestic rather than the combat, on doing the laundry and eating jam sandwiches. The murals have now been removed while the chapel is undergoing restoration and is on show in London and then Chichester. The artist's biographer, Fiona MacCarthy, tells Kirsty about the story behind the paintings. This week a Swedish cinema announced that it was going to rate movies according to the Bechdel Test, in which movies get an A rating for gender equality if they have at least two named female characters who talk to each other about something other than a man. Melissa Silverstein, the founder of the influential Women And Hollywood website, tells Kirsty why she thinks this is just the start of a conversation we need to have about in women in film. Producer Stephen Hughes.
