Most people fantasize about escaping the modern world—this woman actually did it.In this week's episode, host Kim Anderson sits down with Miriam Lancewood, international bestselling author and wilderness explorer, whose life story reads like a modern-day survival epic. Miriam and her husband Peter walked into the wilds of New Zealand in 2010 with no technology, no back-up plan, and a big question: What happens to mind and body when you live far away from civilization? That one question shaped their next seven years—and changed their lives forever. You'll hear about the life skills it takes to truly live off the land, what it means to hunt your own food after growing up vegetarian, and why boredom might be one of the greatest teachers of all. Miriam also shares the story of their nomadic lifestyle across Europe, settling in the Bulgarian mountains, and the deep clarity that only nature can provide. In this episode, you'll learn:What it really takes to survive in the wilderness without modern tools or techThe unexpected truths about hunting, solitude, and slowing way downWhy living with nature transforms your body, mind, and relationshipIf you've ever dreamed of escaping the chaos and returning to something more primal, this episode is for you. Miriam Lancewood is an adventurer, author, and modern-day nomad who chose an extraordinary path far removed from the comforts of modern life. In 2010, Miriam and her husband Peter left civilisation behind, venturing into the high mountains of New Zealand with nothing but a backpack, a bow and arrow, and a tent.  For seven years, they lived as nomads, hunting wild animals, foraging for plants, and embracing a primal existence in the wilderness. Since then, Miriam's journey has continued to evolve. Together with Peter, she has roamed the wilderness of Europe, braved personal challenges like Peter's battle with kidney failure, and settled into an off-grid cottage in Bulgaria. While Peter tends the land, Miriam embarks on solo expeditions, most recently exploring the remote regions of the Himalayas, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. Miriam is also a celebrated author, with her international bestseller Woman in the Wilderness captivating readers across the globe. Her sequel, Wild at Heart, and her most recent release, Wilder Journeys, showcase her incredible adventures and reflections on nature connection in the modern world. Join us as Miriam shares her remarkable story of survival, resilience, and what it means to live in harmony with nature, far from the conveniences of contemporary life. Miriam is one of those women that continues to deeply inspire me and impact my life. We initially connected on podcast #34 of To Be Human which I highly, highly recommend where we explored her adventures of giving up her belongings with her partner Peter and moving to the mountains of New Zealand with a bow and arrow for 6 years and then subsequently walking 2,000km through the forests of Europe, along the coast of Turkey and ending up in the Australian desert. These incredible stories are shared in Miriam's international bestselling books, ‘Woman In The Wilderness' and ‘Wild At Heart'.What I personally love about this conversation that we have today is Miriam's continual evolution when it comes to understanding freedom, her consistent curiosity around who she really is and her commitment to living a life that is fundamentally true to her. We explore her current belief that to have a whole life that is planned is the worst prison of all. We explore the price we pay to live safe and comfortable lives and we explore how we are conditioned to continually solve problems, and what might just happen if we sat still for a moment and experienced the art of doing nothing. Connect with Jennah-LouiseInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/jennah_louiseVoice Note Mentorship with JL: https://www.voicenotementorship.comWebsite: https://www.jennahlouise.comConnect with Miriam LancewoodWebsite: https://miriamlancewood.com/

Episode 165 of The Adventure Podcast features adventurer and author, Miriam Lancewood. Miriam grew up in Holland and travelled around Africa and India, before meeting her now husband, Peter. Peter was a 'modern nomad' and they spent the next few years hiking across mountain ranges, before ending up back in Peter's home country of New Zealand. After questioning the life they were living and the life they wanted to live, they gave up their possessions and moved into the wilderness with a tent and bow and arrow. One year turned into seven. In this episode, Matt and Miriam discuss how to survive in high mountains, what happens to the body and mind in wild spaces, and what it's like to go from a vegetarian to a hunter. Miriam is not a purist - she doesn't live by anyone else's rules or codes. This is a truly fascinating story and insight into a life that is very very rarely lived.Photo credit: Murdo MacLeodSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-adventure-podcast. But... "Don't try to change the situation. Change your mindset and the situation will change". Hello beautiful people On today's podcast we have the powerful Miriam Lancewood. Miriam was born in the Netherlands. After completing her university degree, she worked for a year in Zimbabwe and then travelled to India where she met now husband Peter; a former university lecturer from New Zealand. Together they hiked over mountain ranges in the Himalaya, journeyed for years through South East Asia and eventually ended up in New Zealand. It was in New Zealand that they decided to give up all of their belongings and move into the mountains with a bow and arrow for 6 years, and subsequently in 2017 they left New Zealand to walk 2,000km through the forest of Europe, along the coast of Turkey and also ended up in the Australian desert. These incredible stories are shared in Miriam's international bestselling books, ‘Woman In The Wilderness' and ‘Wild At Heart'.What I personally love about this conversation is Miriam's energy and openness. I read both of Miriam's books, which I genuinely recommend, and thoroughly enjoyed the depth and pure, raw storytelling that prevailed. I cried, I laughed and I reflected on some harder topics that as a society we tend to suppress and ignore. I speak with Miriam about the wave of emotion that certainly was felt surrounding her fear of doing nothing and of being alone, her experience of transforming from being a vegetarian to a hunter, the lessons of life and death that are learnt from being in a relationship with someone 30 years her senior, and of finding herself through the exploration of nature and connection with the wilderness. If you are enjoying these podcasts, please rate, review, subscribe, share with friends and family, become part of the To Be Human Collective, and I'm excited to share this beautiful, empowered lady with you, Miriam Lancewood.Connect with MeMindset Coaching | https://www.jennahlouise.com.auInstagram Personal | https://www.instagram.com/jennah_louiseConnect with MiriamWebsite | https://miriamlancewood.com

Miriam is a best-selling author of the book 'Woman in Wilderness'. She lives with her husband in the New Zealand wilderness, surviving in extreme conditions by hunting wild animals and foraging edible plants. Miriam Lancewood has given up all modern-day comforts to live life right on the edge and off-grid. Her book, now translated in many languages, is her story of living six years in the wilderness with her husband. In 2017, Miriam and Peter left New Zealand to explore other wild places. They walked 2000 km through the forest of Europe and along the coast of Turkey, mostly camping under trees and cooking by fire. It's a gripping story about life and death, courage and the power of love. In this podcast, we dive deeper into her life in isolation and wilderness. It's her untold story from a youth-olympian, travelling through Africa, India, South-east Asia and living in New Zealand as a nomad with her husband. Interestingly, we met at the Emirates Dubai Literature Festival in February 2020 and became good friends. We don't know about you, but this COVID19 crisis has certainly made us reflect on what's most important in life. A little while ago we had the pleasure of Interviewing Miriam Lancewood, author of Woman in The Wilderness and although she doesn't own camels, boy did some have some wisdom for us! We wanted to interview Miriam about her wilderness adventures, because we know, that some of you listening, have brought camels for this idea of living more freely, trekking with your camels to remote places, far away from anything…. not to mention a large number of you who are wild about being in the wild and experienced this first hand with us on one of our camel treks. Miriam's amazing book, about her 8 years (so far) living out in the wilderness with her partner Peter covered some pretty interesting things. They have…. No phones. No work to attend. Some savings to help buy food every few months. Their own two legs. Back packs… And a heart open to what the wilderness can teach. Talk about DREAMY! It's their way of life, but it hasn't always been this way for them…. They wanted to learn how to hunt & survive in the wilderness, and they wanted to find out what happens to the mind and body, when living in the beauty of the wildest nature on earth. Miriam Lancewood was born in a loving home in a small village in the Netherlands in 1983. After completing her university degree, she worked for a year in Zimbabwe, and then traveled to India. And in India she met her now husband Peter Raine.   Peter had resigned from his job as university lecturer in New Zealand and had moved to India to live like a ‘modern nomad’. He had lived five years in India when they met.   Together they hiked over eight mountains ranges in the Himalayas, journeyed for years through South East Asia, including Papua New Guinea, and eventually they ended up in Peter’s home country: New Zealand.   Miriam worked for a while as a teacher, then they decided to give up all their worldly belongings and move into the mountains with a tent and bow and arrow.   They wanted to learn how to hunt and survive in the wilderness, and they wanted to find out what happens to the mind and body, when living in the beauty of the wildest nature on earth.   Show notes   -   Growing up in Holland Wanting to be a sports teacher Heading off travelling at 21 years old Meeting her husband Peter and travelling together Climbing 8 mountain ranges in the Himalayas  Deciding to live in the wilderness Making it to New Zealand and having to work as a teacher for a year Tramping in the mountains Deciding to spend a year in the mountains How to afford to live What it was like living in the wilderness Learning how to hunt… Deciding to catch possums Not knowing what to do Learning the art of doing nothing Walking the Te Araroa Trail, 3,000km from the North to the South Keeping clean and healthy Dealing with periods Keeping in contact with friends and family  Not taking anything for granted Her relationship with Peter Deciding to write a book about her life Having to find a house  Stress and anxiety in the wilderness Thinking short term to not get overwhelmed Lessons learned from living in the wilderness Walking the Lycian Way in Turkey Second book on it’s way with plans to release it in October 2020 Plans for the future Attending writers festivals around the world Learning how to cook and skin the animals The roles in the relationship Why you should read the book and how it will inspire you Not understanding social media Final words of advice The power of sleeping   Social Media   Website - https://miriamlancewood.com

Well & Good with Art & Matilda

SOUND QUALITY DISCLAIMER: This interview was conducted over skype with a poor internet connection (thank you rural New Zealand).  This does not take away from the fact that the content will have you hooked, we promise!   Introducing to you a very extraordinary woman – Miriam Lancewood.  Nine years ago Miriam and her husband Peter decided to give up all of their worldly belongings and move into the New Zealand wilderness with nothing but a tent and bow and arrow. Together they wanted to learn how to hunt & survive in nature and discover what happens to the mind and body when you take away all comforts and live wildly amongst nature on earth.  They live simply in a tent or hut and survive by hunting wild animals, foraging edible plants and using minimal supplies.  This quote sums Miriam up perfectly: ‘My life is free, random and spontaneous. This in itself creates enormous energy and clarity in body and mind.’  This is not an episode to miss.  Art, Matilda & Miriam chat so beautifully about Miriam’s motivations to live in the wild; covering the effects on both the body and the mind.  The conversation covers what life looks like when you live without a clock or technology but instead live by light hours, in silence and with ones thoughts. Miriam talks about the skills she has had to learn and the confidence she has found within because of this.  Inspirational to say the least; Miriam’s story will have you wanting to pack your bags and head bush.   Brought to you by: Roar Collective Hosts: Art & Matilda Green Producer: Tess Novak Sound Technician: Matt Eller Music: Ricky Simmonds

Today we are interviewing Dutch born Tamar Valkenier about her 4 month Mongolian Camel Expedition. Tamar gave up her promising career in 2015, Graduated with A+ as a criminologist as well as a psychologist, she worked as a Investigative Psychologist for the Dutch National Police. Although she loved her dream-job, she wanted to experience a different reality beyond another horizon. She built her own bicycle and cycled towards Istanbul (without a map). Once set out, she fell from one adventure into the other: she lived with jungle tribes, hitchhiked in panama, rock climbed in Greece, lived off the land in Australia, and eventually she ended up in Mongolia: She bought a horse, a camel and got a dog and walked alone in the remote Altai Mountains for 4 months, learning the ancient art of eagle hunting and about survival techniques, she completed the expedition in 2018 and then gained her papers to become an official wilderness guide: In the Canadian Rockies she learned about the local edible plants, herbal medicine, animal tracking and survival-skills. In December of 2018 she set off with Miriam Lancewood (author of “Woman in the Wilderness”) and who we've personally interviewed for this podcast (Episode #30), on their Epic Female Expedition in New Zealand. They survived for more than 2 months on hunting, fishing and gathering edible plants. They roamed with heavy backpacks and rifles over 8 mountain passes, well away from trails and tracks, and discovered the heart of the wilderness Without further to do and say you gotta tune into this inspiring interview which, for us, took our imagination to wild places thinking about trekking with camels in the Mongolian Altai Mountains.
