I interview Jan Van Smirren, who used to train for Ironmans and swimming the English Channel by recording his heart rate by hand and writing each reading into a spreadsheet! I also cover the news - T100 Singapore, Sea Otter Classic, and more. Then we have a great edition of The Training Log where we cover... - HR with swimming is a game changer! - Green smoothies were causing cavities even though they are super healthy. - Ezekiel bread and cereal is really healthy, just don't read the rest of the scripture about how to cook it and serve it. - Figured out a better way to run with River. - Turning run problems into solutions. #Zen - Making a green smoothie live. Blueberries, kale, banana, and carrots in a Vitamix. With helpful tips! - Using colored zip ties to identify charging cables faster. - Upsides and downsides of Form Swim goggles hardware and software design. - 2025 Landcruiser and 4Runner thoughts about 4wd and how we use it in endurance sports. - Swimming by HR makes you euphoric and confident! - How serotonin works. - The Zen trap of "I've got it all figured out." - Form should make sports glasses and here's how. - How to make scrambled eggs in a coffee mug in the microwave. - You can get an education by listening to podcasts or audiobooks while in Zone 2. - How low cadence actually trains both slow and fast twitch muscles at the same time. - What you need to do is what you need to do most. - Measuring oxygen use to analyze efficiency. - Listen to Fast Talk Podcast about cadence. - Bike ride doing lower cadence. Faster, more relaxed! - Riding more often with white blinky light on the front for safety at sunset. - Feeding the donkey, River's peeing on my bike tires? - Bigger gearing as a training method. - Dunk in the pool. - Make yourself more aero by putting your phone in the center back pocket and it will pull a loose jersey more tighter. - I was really powerful at hill climbing because I used to train on a singlespeed. - I even rode the MS150 on a 1985 single speed Kuwahara road bike. (My brother's from high school) - How standing and pedaling over the tops of hills makes you faster and keeps your crotch from going numb. - Don't do a FTP test uphill or indoors and then try to use those numbers for your FTP in an outdoor race. - Swimming by HR turns major yardage into a calm meditation session. https://www.lisadoggett.com/ Lisa Doggett, MD, MPH is a family physician and author of a new memoir, Up the Down Escalator: Medicine, Motherhood, and Multiple Sclerosis (available Aug. 15, 2023, HCI Books). A seventh-generation Texan, Lisa grew up in Austin, where she developed a strong commitment to public service under the influence of her father, U.S. Congressman Lloyd Doggett, and her mother, Libby Doggett, a nationally known advocate for children and families. She attended Amherst College, Baylor College of Medicine, and the University of Texas School of Public Health. She completed her residency in family medicine at the University of Cincinnati. Returning to Austin in 2002 with her pediatrician husband, Lisa practiced medicine for several years at People's Community Clinic. Then, at the age of thirty-four, with virtually no administrative experience, she leaped at the opportunity to direct a new clinic for Central Texas residents without insurance. Days after her younger daughter turned two, Lisa was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Shocked and scared, Lisa faced a bleak future, plagued by chronic dizziness and the specter of disability hovering nearby. She didn't know if she would ever be able to work again or serve as an effective parent. But she has done both. Lisa now works as the senior medical director for a national care management company - a job which allows for creativity, continued work with vulnerable populations, and improved stress management. Her daughters - now 15 and 18 - are thriving, and her husband provides support through the challenges of her illness. Since her diagnosis in 2009, despite several relapses, she has hiked the Inca trail to Machu Picchu, traveled throughout the U.S. and internationally, run two marathons, completed a half Ironman triathlon, and biked the MS150 four times: over 160 miles from Houston to Austin and, more recently, Austin to College Station. A co-founder of Texas Physicians for Social Responsibility, she remains active on the board, currently serving as president. She has loosened her grip on perfectionism and accepts uncertainty. MS is now a reason to seize opportunities and rejoice in each day. A memoir of triumph in the face of a terrifying diagnosis, Up the Down Escalator recounts Dr. Lisa Doggett's startling shift from doctor to patient, as she learns to live with multiple sclerosis while running a clinic for uninsured patients in central Austin. Recounting before and after the discovery of her MS, she chronicles vexing symptoms while trying to be an attentive mother, wife, and a caring family doctor. Facing the prospect of a career-ending disability as she adjusts to life with multiple sclerosis, Dr. Lisa Doggett is forced to deal with a new level of uncertainty and vulnerability, and the everyday fear that something new will go wrong. Taking off her white coat—becoming a patient herself—she confronts unimaginable fears, copes with her limitations, and sidesteps her skepticism of alternative medicine to seek help from unlikely sources. Drawing on riveting patient stories, Doggett reveals the dark realities of the dysfunctional U.S. healthcare system, made all the more stark when she becomes the one seeking care. MS pushes Doggett—a perfectionist at heart—to soften her inner drill sergeant and embrace self-compassion. As a patient, she learns to advocate for herself to ensure on-time medication deliveries and satisfactory treatment plans; to navigate chronic dizziness, relapses, and parenting frustrations; and to push her physical limits as a runner to go farther than ever before. As the director of a health clinic for the uninsured, Doggett's MS inspires an even deeper empathy as she confronts challenging cases, prompting her to work harder on behalf of those in her care, many of whom struggle with illnesses more serious than her own.

Leslie Moore can see the hand of God from childhood to present as she stumbles through life with extreme fatigue. She understands the importance of prayer and reading the Word of God. She believes nothing is by chance and the Lord has a purpose for each believer. In addition to MS, the Lord has brought Leslie through debilitating migraines, depression, anxiety, and ADHD. She believes all things are possible with Christ who strengthens her, and she strives to live her faith in Christ. She is a Manager in a Fortune 500 Company, a former owner of a non-profit, and an award-winning bilingual children’s Indie Book Author. Raised by an illiterate father, and a coda mother (a person raised by deaf parents), Leslie’s childhood was faced with unique communication challenges due to her father’s illiteracy and her mother’s vigilant fears and attitude. Leslie began working in the 7th grade and has not stopped. In 1993 at age 23 she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). In that same year she gave birth to her son who was diagnosed with learning challenges when entering elementary school; she was told he would never read. Leslie rebuked that declaration in the name of Jesus and a battle began: a fight for her son’s education that inspired her to write children’s books. Leslie is passionate about sharing the gift of reading with children who have fewer resources in environments of need. She has served on non-profit boards, taught Sunday school, facilitates a Bible study, and has given many hours to volunteer projects such as: The Urban League of PGH Hunger Svcs., Jambo Charity, Scouts, and the MS Society’s MS150. When you wake up in the morning, she advises, seek the Lord and mimic His walk. Don’t look for accolades in this life--look forward to them in heaven. Jesus took 12 ordinary people and turned the world upside down!

In 2006, Courtney Carver was drowning in clutter, debt, and stress. She was also suffering from myriad health problems such as extreme exhaustion, tingling in her hands and face, and vertigo. A diagnosis that very same year sent her reeling. Courtney was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, ironically, as she was training to ride the MS150 charity bike ride for a co-worker who also suffered from the disease. As she says on her website, the diagnosis, while devastating and shocking at first, has actually taught her how to really live.  In order to diminish the symptoms of MS, she had to minimize stress as much as possible. In preparation for that journey, Courtney started a blog to chronicle her efforts to simplify, de-stress and find her way back to health, happiness, and love.  As you can imagine, it has resonated with thousands. Her message is this: "Be more with less means: Be more you. Give yourself all the space, time and love to remember who you are. Living with less clutter, busyness, and stress will help you make the room to do what you need to do." Today, we talk about her new book, Soulful Simplicity: How Living With Less Can Lead to So Much More. In this book, she shows us the power of simplicity to improve our health, build more meaningful relationships, and relieve stress in our professional and personal lives.  BeMoreWithLess.ComSoulful Simplicity   "I Could Never Do That" Facebook Page Instagram   Subscribe on Apple Podcasts Subscribe on Spotify Subscribe on Stitcher Subscribe on Google Play   Copyright 2018, All Rights Reserved Theme Music: ”Aitech"Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

The oil and gas industry is more than just getting hydrocarbons out of the ground and into the hands of consumers. The oilfield is a community built on hard work and helping others. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has been part of this community since 1984 and raised more than $240 million to support MS research, programs and services that are changing the world for people affected by MS. We sat down with Justin Martin with the National MS Society and Micah Love, one of the MS Ambassadors, to talk about the BP MS 150 Houston to Austin Ride, which is one of more than 80 Bike MS events across the country and is the National Multiple Sclerosis Society's largest fundraising event. BP America has been the title sponsor of the BP MS150 since 2001 and, along with Team BP, has raised nearly $17 million to support the Society's mission. BP supports the communities where its employees live and work and is committed to serving as title sponsor of the BP MS 150 through 2018. The 33rd Annual BP MS 150 begins on Saturday, April 29 from three start line locations in the Houston area, and finishes in front of the Bob Bullock Museum near the State Capitol in Austin on Sunday, April 30, following an overnight celebration in La Grange. The ride will connect an estimated 11,000 riders, in addition to thousands of volunteers, sponsors, donors and supporters, as they embark on a shared journey to drive awareness and raise $16 million. The BP MS 150 is a fundraising event, not a race, and therefore is attractive for novice and experienced cyclists. Meet Angie, Amy, Heddy, and Made Victoria of Houston's Toxic Shocks! Howdy Joyriders! On this episode of The Joyride, I chat with four members of Houston's Toxic Shocks Cycling group! In this laughter-filled show, we chat about the power of riding in a group of women, being provocative, and I get totally schooled on bike snacks! I was introduced to the Toxic Shocks by friend of the show, Femmewrench Tara Escudero - check out her episode of The Joyride here. Friends on Bikes There's a new inaugural Women of Color social ride in Portland hosted by a new group called Friends on Bikes. The ride is intended to break down barriers and claim space for Women/trans/femme/non-binary people of color in this overwhelmingly pasty-white biketown. Check out this fantastic write up in the Portland Mercury here. Check out their FB group here, and follow up on Twitter and Instagram. Be our Guest! Do you know of a gal you'd like to hear on the show? Nominate a friend, or yourself, to be a guest at bit.ly/joyrideguest! I'd love to hear from you and build this big, beautiful, vibrant community. Meet Angie, Amy, Heddy, and Made Victoria! I cannot even believe how much I smiled while recording and listening back to this podcast! It was so much fun to chat with this inspiring group of gals. You can't see Amy in the screenshot below, but she was there :) From the Toxic Shocks Cycling site: "We strive to promote and encourage women's cycling in Houston. This group is a conglomeration of ladies and friends who ride bikes. The rides stop at bars and other fun places, to drinky drank and talk girl smack. To be clear, we welcome anyone who identifies as a woman and/or is non binary and/or trans! The goal of this group is to provide a safe space for women to enjoy Houston's growing cycling community. The meet-up is every Monday evening around 7 p.m. Carnegie Van Guard High School (Taft/West Gray) on top of the parking garage. Roll out is about 7:15 p.m. New riders, please note that it is necessary to bring a bike lock, lights for riding at night, drivers license or ID (for bar entry) and cash or credit card." Make sure to visit ToxicShocksCycling.com or link up with their FB group for information on their weekly ride and other events like MS150, Alley Cats, Bike Around the Bay, Cranksgiving, and more. --- Big thanks to Toxic Shocks Cycling for hanging out and sharing the bike love with us! Connect with them on the Instagram, Facebook, or their site at ToxicShocksCycling.com. Friends, you know I believe in the transformative power of the bike, in our personal lives, our communities, and the world at large. I would be super grateful if you'd leave a rating or review in iTunes, Stitcher, or via whatever method you listen. It helps more gals find the show, and I believe the more stories we share, the more women who ride, we make this world - both our internal and external worlds - better with every revolution. Ratings and reviews help with that, but nothing is better than a personal referral, it'd be rad if you would share the show with even just one woman who you think might dig it. Remember, life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage. Keep moving forward and until next time I hope you enjoy the ride. Forever Forward, ~C
