We all know about the 5 senses we have - seeing, hearing, smelling, touch and taste. But did you know we have other senses too? Guest Jo Grace is talking to Clare this week about the impact these different senses can have on children's behaviour. Jo shares examples of what sensory needs might look like at home and how it's important to distinguish between behaviour choices and neuro differences. Jo explains the meaning of "proprioceptive awareness" and how important it is to make an individual feel safe. Jo Grace is a Sensory Engagement and Inclusion Specialist. She's a doctoral researcher, author, and trainer, and a TEDx speaker. Jo is also the Founder of The Sensory Projects. Jo recommends the book My Mummy is Autistic by Heath Grace. You can find Jo at The Sensory Projects, Twitter @jo3grace and on Facebook. Jo also shares three tips during the episode: Make sure you distinguish between neuro differences and behaviour. Don't look for a single trigger to understand your child's behaviour – think about the bigger picture and consider what the individual is dealing with in their environment. Recognise the impact of our senses and how proprioceptive awareness can make a child feel safe and secure. The My Family Coach podcasts covers every aspect of children's behaviour, all in handy 15 minute (ish) bite-sized chunks. Each episode features a new guest chatting about a different aspect of behaviour and leaves you with three handy tips to use at home.

Autism support is given to half the people who need it, and nearly all of it involves teaching people to appear not-autistic i.e. teaching them the skills required to mask autism. “I didn't used to say that I was autistic. Not because I'm ashamed of being autistic, but just for very practical reasons that I'm aware of the prejudice,” explains Joanna Grace, Founder of The Sensory Projects, Author and TEDx speaker. On this second installment of two-part conversation with Joanna Grace, co-hosts Heather and Donna ask Joanna about her experience with being an autistic mother, and how that led her son to become the youngest published author in the UK.  Joanna dives into the story of how her four-year-old son became a published author. Because Joanna is a primary school teacher, she tried everything to get her young son to continue writing over summer break. To fully comprehend how their minds process information differently, Joanna encouraged her son to draw pictures and write a book about having an autistic mother. This book showcases a five-year-old's understanding of divergent minds from a simplified neurotypical perspective. This book is not only helpful for younger audiences, but also for neurotypical individuals who are having a difficult time understanding how the mind of an autistic person works.  Tune into the second installment of this two-part conversation with Joanna Grace to learn more about how autistic minds process information and how to understand neurodiversity through the lens of a four year old. Then, check out Joanna's and her four-year-old son's books using the links below!    Quotes  • “I didn't used to say that I was autistic. Not because I'm ashamed of being autistic, but just for very practical reasons that I'm aware of the prejudice.” (02:50-2:55 | Joanna Grace)  • “I was thinking, goodness, does he suffer from having an autistic mummy?” (4:30-04:33 | Joanna Grace)  • “Like many neurodivergent people I experienced delayed processing with language. So it's like it buffers as it goes into my brain.” (7:49-07:53 | Joanna Grace)  • Somebody, when they were talking about his authority to write this book said, you know, this little boy has lived 24/7 with an autistic person. So he's an expert, even though he's very young. (10:16-10:22) • And so, yeah, he is the UK's youngest published author and his book My Mummy is Autistic talks about the language processing differences that I experienced. And it does so in a very pragmatic, mommy's brain is different. Words go in like this in her brain. This is what mommy's listening face looks like. This is what my listening face looks like. It's very matter of fact, it's very accepting and it's very celebratory. (12:14-13:00 | Joanna Grace)  • “Neurodiversity is natural. A lot of the deficit based narratives are possible to flip. You know, it's not that this is a particular strength or a particular weakness. It's just capacity in context.” (14:31-14:46 | Joanna Grace)    Connect with Joanna Grace: 7 Min SENCO: Autism https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLi1RQR58BHnW5LtJfD0Ph-RIH7EhnrP3t    TedTalk: https://www.ted.com/talks/joanna_grace_chloe_salfield_inclusion_for_pity_s_sake?utm_campaign=tedspread&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=tedcomshare    LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joannagracethesensoryprojects/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/jo3grace  Facebook https://www.facebook.com/JoannaGraceTSP    www.thesensoryprojects.co.uk  Stories: http://www.thesensoryprojects.co.uk/sensory-stories  Books: http://www.thesensoryprojects.co.uk/books  College: http://www.thesensoryprojects.co.uk/online-college    Learn more about the Neurodivergent Leader Podcast: www.neurodivergentleader.com  https://www.instagram.com/neurodivergentleader/    Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Eighteen years later her grandson Jason and friend Tan bring their teacher to the island to show him the paradise and of course Kong. But their teacher Ramon De La Porta has other plans, he steals the island's Primal Stones which control the balance of the island and make sure the imprisoned god Chyros does not escape. So now to restore balance to the island Jason, Tan, a shaman girl named Lua and of course Kong must journey around the world to retrieve the stones and stop De La Porta once and for all.Cast:Alex Doduk ... Harpy (voice)September 2000 The #1 song that week was “Jumpin Jumpin" By Destinys Child The #1 movie for the week was "The Watcher". "The Watcher" is an exciting psychological thriller that takes a unique look into the minds of both a serial killer and the man who must, reluctantly, pursue him. Starred Keanu Reeves fresh off Matrix The #1 tv show was Survivor, followed by ER and Who Wants to Be a Millionare Microsoft releases Windows ME. Rage Against the Machine's Tim Commerford is arrested for climbing on the set at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards after his band lost the award for Best Rock Video to Limp Bizkit. The director of Rage's "Sleep Now in the Fire" video, Michael Moore, suggests Commerford was probably "just bored" by the show.  Britney Spears performed her hit single "Oops!... I Did It Again", becoming one of the VMA's most iconic and controversial performances due to her skin-coloured outfit.  NSYNC performed their hit single "Bye Bye Bye", also becoming one of the VMA's most iconic performances ever The 2000 Summer Olympics are opened in Sydney, Australia. Fun Facts: Two video games were released based on the series, both on the Nintendo Game Boy Advance. The first, called simply Kong: The Animated Series, was released by Planet Interactive in 2002. The second was released by Majesco Entertainment in 2005, and was based on the direct-to-video film Kong: King of Atlantis. Details on Netflixs new animated series: Netflix took to Twitter revealed certain details about the upcoming project and stated that a shipwrecked crew would be reaching an island of monsters. The island has “one king to rule them all” before mentioning Skull Island is a new anime series set in Legendary's Monsterverse from Powerhouse Animations. A sympathetic clone version of him starred in the 2000 cartoon Kong: The Animated Series, in which he wrestled dinosaurs and romped around with his human buddies. However, there's a good chance Skull Island will not be aimed at kids, judging by its Netflix predecessors, which were also done by animation studio Powerhouse Animation Worst Ranked Kong Movie by Screen Crush: Kong: King of Atlantis (2005): This list starts out with an obscure, animated incarnation of King Kong that really should be forgotten. The only upside of Kong: King of Atlantis is that it's so far removed from the original King Kong story that you can pretend this is a completely different franchise. Kong: King of Atlantis was released straight to DVD as a tie-in to Kong: The Animated Series, so it's not to be taken seriously on its own. The plot is focused on an evil queen named Reptilia who tries to use Kong to control the people of Atlantis. He's rescued by a man who's a bargain bin version of Jim Hawkins from Treasure Planet. It's not a good time. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
