Title: The Failure to Launch (Hebrews 5:11–6:3)Summary:In this sermon, we explore a powerful warning and a powerful invitation: God expects spiritual growth — and He guarantees it for those who desire it. Using vivid imagery like Peter Pan Syndrome, spiritual milk vs solid food, and digging for diamonds in Scripture, we are called to pursue a faith that is not just wide but deep, discerning and anchored. Growth requires both grit and grace — but ultimately, God Himself carries us to maturity.Main Points:Do You Want to Grow? (Hebrews 5:11-14)How We Grow (Hebrews 6:1-3)Reflection Questions:Where have you seen "spiritual sluggishness" creep into your life? Are you actively growing — moving from milk to solid food — or staying stagnant? If someone asked you to explain the basics of Christianity, could you?How can you actively dig deeper into God's Word this week?Where do you need to trust God's grace to carry you toward maturity?Website & Location:

In this sermon by Doug Pratt, the emphasis is on living a fruitful life, particularly as one grows older. Pratt addresses those already in their later years and those who hope to reach them one day. Drawing from Psalm 92, he challenges the cultural allure of remaining "forever young," as epitomized in Bob Dylan's song. Instead, Pratt proposes that being "forever fruitful" is the attainable and desirable goal. Using the metaphor of the date palm tree, which produces sweeter fruit as it ages, he suggests that life's best contributions may come later with experience. The sermon urges personal growth in faith and kindness and emphasizes making meaningful impacts on others. Pratt highlights seven aspects of a fruitful later life, including lifelong learning and deepening relationships, as integral to a full and balanced life beyond just wealth and health. The sermon concludes with a reimagined blessing, aiming for listeners to add life to their years. Pratt's prayer seeks God's guidance for leading a fruitful life reflecting divine intent.

GerleMen - Celebrating Our Greatness

I was recently at an all-gay birthday party, standing in a small gaggle of well-known friends comparing ages. The birthday “boy” was 44. I let the group know I will be 59 this April. Then said, “I'm old.” “You're not old!” One of them insisted, his eyes confused. I stood my ground and insisted that, by the numbers around life expectancy, I was in the final 3rd or 4th of my life. His expression changed to befuddled surprise. He then scanned me up and down before saying, with some exasperation, “But you're not ‘old.'” It was an attempt to be gracious, so why, even as I write this, does it piss me the fuck off? Isn't that what we all want to hear? Isn't that what we all want to believe? Isn't that polite? The response was all those things, and I still want to discuss it. But when I push the subject, and I don't fawn over the Emporor's forever young clothes, even when I'm the one wearing them, the frigid response I receive tells me I've broken a social contract by saying the word “old.”One reason I want my olderness confirmed is because getting old, especially gay-old, is so disorienting. I shouldn't be struggling with this. I was supposed to be dead at 23. That's what the doctor said when he told me I was HIV+ at 20. Decades and decades ago, AIDS was supposed to kill me. It didn't. It still hasn't. In fact, by the numbers of my regularly measured blood work, I've never been healthier. I need help figuring out how to be this way, how to be gay, out, male, alive, and old. To be me. Right now. What the fuck is going on? Disorientation turns into fear, and fear turns into anger.  Yes, gurl, she's old. Calm down! We have collectively created a culture where death only comes from a bullet, a bomb, a space phaser, a drive-by, a drug overdose, a medieval ax, or a superhero's pummeling. That's how we see it play out in the media. It doesn't come to good people who have followed all the rules, bought all the supplements, and stretched through every yoga class. Except that it does. That's reality. Another reason I want my age acknowledged is because I know I'm invited to a themed party called “Aging, or Olds, or Elders,” one that includes big ideas, deep love, and fleeting beauty that is usually only witnessed by those left behind at funerals. Every gay knows (or should know) that it's rude to attend a party and not participate in the theme. I want to pack, wear, and inhabit the most stunning version of the theme on offer. Please don't ask me to show up wearing what I arrived wearing 35 years ago. First of all, it doesn't fit. More importantly, it's not as interesting as the metaphorical garb this new adventure called “aging” suggests. How cool would it be to have a role in my culture because of my proximity to the end of my natural life cycle? Not in spite of it. I'd like to live in a village described by Don Kilhefner in a White Crane Institute essay, Gay Adults! Gay Adults! Where Are You? where each stage of life has its own gifts and responsibilities. If you'd like to hear me in conversation with Mr. Kilhefner, we discussed “Boy Energy vs. Man Energy vs. Elder Energy” and several other topics on my podcast. “Cultural anthropologists tell us that whenever and wherever humans are found, there seems to be a patterning of life into four stages called youth, adult, elder, and ancestor. Moreover, each of these stages has significant social roles to play in the village. There is a profound and fundamental interdependence between these stages and societal roles upon which the health and vitality of the village or tribe are largely based.”Unfortunately, American culture, and especially gay culture, doesn't recognize its youth, adults, elders, and ancients. We don't celebrate the challenges and gifts unique to each stage of life. We don't mentor up or down the age spectrum. We simply have young people and old people. The young are celebrated and left alone to sort out life, while the old are cloaked in invisibility.  This allows the olds and the youngs to maintain a kind of magical thinking – a fantasy where the culturally imposed indignities of being forgotten and deemed useless are shielded from witnesses – like a curtain pulled in an emergency room to separate both sides against witnessing the vulnerability, pain, and death, we close our eyes to the realities of aging and mortality. Unfortunately, attention, let alone deference and respect, are only given to elders in movies, not in real life. I'm Daddied, in a good way, on the dance floor and hookup apps, but it's not the same thing as having a role. It feels more like a superficial outfit assessment than a social role. Like I'm now wearing a United Federation of Planets Starfleet Captain's uniform instead of the Spiderman costume. No fundamental role changes, just a different look. I have a fantasy of being a respected elder, but I don't know where to do that or with whom. And, to be honest, I  don't want to leave the dance floor. I've scoffed at the idea that I have Peter Pan Syndrome, a Neverland desire to stay forever young. Still, aside from Cher, I don't know many 60-year-olds wearing body glitter under psychedelic lights as they dance to booming music until four in the morning. Maybe I'm paving a road forward. Maybe a mentor will appear and guide me. Maybe I'm in the wrong room. Since nobody is old, it's hard to find fellow travelers. I feel lost and alone. I keep dancing. Is it time to throw in the towel and give up the intense maintenance required for physical beauty and sexual relevance? Do I capitulate to aging and settle for the comfort of a sloth-like existence in front of the TV? Like all the waves of hotties I've seen at the gay gym over decades, rise to their peak of beauty, reign in our gay social sexual circles, and then, as the beauty slowly fades, disappear? Time is running out. The Centers for Disease Control says men will live until 73.5 years old. That gives me 14.5 years left. Adding the words “gay men” to my Google search was very depressing. It says we need to reduce that life expectancy number by 20 years, giving me 3.5 years left. My mom is now the only person in my bio-family older than me. All my grandparents, my father, and my older brother are dead. The gay men closest to me in my 20s are dead. My best friend Alvin, my 12-step mentor Gustav, and my boyfriend Tony, all men 5-10 years older than me. All gone. That's reality. We spent so much time, focus, and energy on survival that we didn't have a chance to think about what this existence would look like.I see clearly, like it or not, that this being old thing is a new frontier for out gay men. Like the Mattachine Society in the early 50s (the first queens to take on the United States Postal Service and win a Supreme Court decision allowing ONE Inc., a news magazine about gays, to be distributed through the mail), we need to find a new way forward. With that magazine, the Mattachine Society created a virtual gathering place where we could see and be seen as queers, paving the way for all kinds of queer thought to be sent through the mail. We, Olds, need to decide who and how to be at this age – because the examples shown by the non-gays are pretty grim. Most fatal gunshot wounds are self-inflicted by straight men suffering from that construct. We liked the Golden Girls, and that's not a bad family model to start with. Whatever we're doing, I refuse to pretend to be something that I'm not. I didn't when I was a young gay and won't as an old gay either. If we can't say and hear the word “old,” we'll never learn to navigate its reality. Today we are tackling the idea of Peter Pan Syndrome within the black community. We discuss is this something that truly exist and what the impacts may be of our people not wanting to grow up. Mikell contends that black society actually has more of the "Wendy Syndrome" where we end up growing too fast and that this Peter Pan syndrome is not born from black society. Sam contends that there are specific parts of black culture that glorifies staying in a younger mindset. Hip hop artists would be married for years, but all of their content would be about living a young carefree life. Warren P is tired of this generation not taking responsibility for not wanting to take control of their own lives.

In today's upbeat and eye-opening episode, We're taking a candid look at the "Peter Pan Syndrome," that tendency we have to cling to youth in ways that actually make our health choices anything but youthful. I'll take you back to when I was 22, equating fun with a whole lot of unhealthy habits, and lay bare the biases and misconceptions we often have about what being young, 'edgy,' or 'fun' really means. I'll also dig into the hidden narratives in food marketing—ever notice how processed, unhealthy options get billed as 'party foods,' while anything healthy gets tagged as 'boring' or 'old'? Through stories like a client of mine who was scared of losing her connection with her boyfriend by eating healthier, I'll unfold the irrational ties we make between overeating, overdrinking, and this idea of defying aging. But here's the real meat of today's talk—it's all about empowerment and self-realization. I'm inviting you to take a hard look at how you want to think about eating well and caring for your body. Let's break free from those narratives that aren't doing us any favors and redefine what fun and youthfulness really mean—in terms of energy, vitality, and feeling amazing. In this episode, I aim for you to realize that taking control of your health isn't about resigning to getting old; it's about truly living. It's about embracing every age with wisdom and celebrating each stage of life with a joy and fulfillment that's genuinely ageless. Chapter Summaries: Redefining Aging, Fun, and Responsibility (0:00:04)  Exploring the Peter Pan syndrome, I uncover how unhealthy habits are marketed as fun and how to redefine health, joy and vitality. No doubt you've heard at some point in your life that girls are more mature than boys. As a result, we tend to forgive childlike behaviour in men more easily, even in adulthood. Living with immature men can be a struggle for their partners. What's more, Peter Pan syndrome is sometimes used as justification for behaviour that's difficult to live with. You may remember that we discussed the topic in a previous episode of Do You Really Know. And another term for someone who displays Peter Pan Syndrome is a man child! What are the main characteristics of men children? Does it get better with time at least? What can you do to avoid this behaviour? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! NOTE: Since the date of recording this episode, our guest for this week has embarked on her gender transition. While you'll hear her referred to by her previous name (often called a ‘deadname') in the episode, we've updated the show notes to reflect this. Her name is Hana Leyland and she uses She/Her pronouns. What happens when you face your darkest fears and emerge stronger on the other side? We're thrilled to welcome the extraordinarily resilient Hana Leland to the show, who's about to unfold an absorbing narrative of personal transformation, navigating a queer identity, and dealing with a mother's mental health battle. Hana's life-changing journey saw her grappling with addiction and trauma, yet she found an unexpected superpower in the midst of these darkest hours. On today's episode, Duane and Hana unravel the complex layers of her identity, and how she navigated through her queer identity in an ever-evolving world. The discussion takes a deep dive into the concept of Peter Pan Syndrome and its link with addiction, a rampant issue within the queer community. Hana's story is a testament to the power of self-exploration guided by therapy and internal family systems. She shines a light on the importance of mentors within the LGBTQ+ community and how they play a pivotal role in shaping identity. Moving forward, we explore the transformative journey toward authenticity. Hana highlights the role of sobriety in illuminating her own identity, and how harnessing the power of storytelling has been instrumental in reclaiming her authenticity. Not shying away from vulnerability, she emphasizes the need for support and mentorship on one's journey to self-discovery. Hana's narrative is an inspiring reminder that embracing our unique values and identities can lead to profound transformation and that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but strength. Tune in and let this heartfelt story inspire your own journey toward self-actualization. In this episode, you will hear: Overcoming addiction and finding grace Navigating LGBTQ+ identity and trauma Exploring identity and overcoming dark parts Asking for help and authenticity Follow and Review: We'd love for you to follow us if you haven't yet. Directed by Alexander Payne from a screenplay written by himself and collaborator Jim Taylor (I NOW PRONOUNCE YOU CHUCK AND LARRY would you believe it), 2004's SIDEWAYS is a comedy about middle-age, depression and alcoholism. Miles Raymond (Paul Giamatti) is a divorced wine aficionado and unpublished writer of a terrible sounding semi-autobiographical novel who takes best friend and former television star Jack (Thomas Hayden Church) on a road trip through California wine country ahead of Jack's impending marriage. Though his friend focuses on one final fling with wine pourer Stephanie (Sandra Oh) before getting hitched more than he does sampling the best the Santa Ynez Valley has to offer, Miles finds something deeper in the vineyards with Maya (Virgina Madsen). Giamatti has a relatable everyman charm about him which allows you to empathise with and even forgive him no matter how badly he disgraces himself which includes stealing from his own mother while fellow Spider-Man villain Thomas Hayden Church somehow manages to find some depth in the vacuous Peter Pan Syndrome suffering Jack. Character actor M.C. Gainey's penis almost steals the movie but it's the thoughtful themes about maturity, aging, male friendships and the need for patience to nurture people in relationships which lingers on the palate. We love to hear from our listeners! "If you look at studies on people who are faced with their mortality, people with chronic disease who have a year to live, people on the death bed… Nobody says I wish I worked more or I made more money. Everybody says I wish I spent more time with my kids, I wish I had kids, or I wish stayed with that partner, I wish I was more with my family and friends." - Sal Di Stefano   Same Problems, New Environment "These problems that we have today are actually not new problems. It's a new environment… The reason why people are unhappy now is although we have more, they can see the next guy that has more than they do, as they compare themselves. That's not a new problem… This is human behavior. I don't think they're new problems, I think we have different circumstances. Human behavior doesn't change, I think we still have to learn the same lessons." - Sal Di Stefano   Links From Today's Show  Dr. John Gottman 451 Laura Coe | Understanding Akashic Records: How To Live Your Dharma, Spiritual Bypassing, Twin Flames & Soul Mates MPM: 1480 How To Find Peace & Meaning Amid Chaos With Bishop Robert Barron 484 Stefan Chmelik | Vagus Nerve Toning: The Science + Spirit of Healing From Stress With Sensate The Bible - Isaiah 45:7 405 Tim Corcoran | Vision Quest: How To Find Your Place In The Ecology of Life, Purpose Mountain & Spiritual Courage 457 Josh Trent: Solocast | Healing The Father Wound, 100+ Hours Fasting, Vision Questing + Being Alone With Mother Nature's Wisdom Mind Pump Media Mind Pump Podcast: Josh Trent Of Wellness Force On The Future Of Tech In Fitness & Beyond 437 Josh Trent | Death & Rebirth: Why I'm Saying Goodbye to Wellness Force… Jordan Peterson Joe Dispenza Bruce Lipton Arnold Schwarzenegger MPM Co-host: Adam Schafer MPM Co-host: Justin Andrews MPM Producer: Doug Egge Paleo Conference - Austin, Texas Shawn Stevenson: The Model Health Show 384 Shawn Stevenson | Eat Smarter: Use the Power of Food to Reboot Your Metabolism, Upgrade Your Brain, and Transform Your Life 333 Dr. Kelly Brogan | The Spiral Path: How To Own & Love Your Self Jessica Di Stefano Arthur Brooks Chris Kresser MPM: 620 Chris Kresser On The Chronic Disease Equation, The Potato Hack For Fat Loss, The Disease Worse Than Being Eaten By A Shark & MORE 140 Unconventional Medicine – Chris Kresser MPM: 1480 How To Find Peace & Meaning Amid Chaos With Bishop Robert Barron MPM: 910 Paul Chek Paul Chek MPM: 1792 The Secrets Of Happy People With Arthur C. A painfully skinny teenager, he felt insecure about his physique and his lack of muscle and strength. Fitness was a way for him to apply hard work and effort towards changing and re-inventing himself. A natural intellect, Sal devoured every fitness, physiology and nutrition publication he could get his hands on. His appetite for knowledge is voracious and he used his passion for learning to maximize his own body's potential. 4 years later Sal walked into his local 24 Hour Fitness gym and applied to be a personal trainer. He quickly became a top performer and, at the age of 19 was promoted to the position of general manager with as many as 40 employees working under him. During this period of time, Sal learned to master skills of sales, marketing, and communication and his gyms broke records in sales and production. At the age of 22, Sal became an entrepreneur. He opened a wellness and personal trainer facility that offered one on one training, massage therapy, nutritional counseling, hormone testing, and acupuncture. At the age of 28 Sals health took a bad turn.   Sal's Wellness Journey The years of training his own personal body with excessive amounts of intensity in the pursuit of more muscle combined with the abuse of supplements caused his body to rebel. He lost 15 lbs of muscle and at one point believed he may have an autoimmune disorder. This forced Sal to change his personal approach to fitness. He made health a priority and he visited his insecurities that caused him to abuse his body. It took him a full year of study and learning to transform yet again. Sal learned about gut health, hormone health and how to prioritize health over appearance. He healed his body and changed how he communicates fitness and health and was re-invigorated with a new sense of purpose. Although this was a challenging time for him, it is literally what formed his view on health and how he communicates it to this day.   MAPS Programming At 33 years old Sal met Doug Egge who became his client. They formed a close friendship and together they created the first Maps program. Sal was the designer of the workout plan and Doug created the marketing material behind it. Their goal was to shatter the failed muscle-building workout ideas that Sal had personally witnessed as entirely ineffective. They knew that MAPS programming would be vastly superior. Their challenge was how to bring this to the masses. 2 years later Sal met Adam and Justin and together with Doug they started Mind Pump. The goal with Mind Pump was simple... Bring quality fitness and health information to the masses with integrity and honesty. Sal wanted to shift the direction of the fitness industry from an aesthetic insecurity-based industry to a self-love and self-care health industry. He knew this could be accomplished with education through entertainment.
