JD Barker, New York Times bestselling author, was diagnosed with autism at 22—a late discovery that brought long-overdue clarity to challenges he'd faced since childhood. Early in his career, a stint in anger management led a counselor to suggest autism, prompting JD to begin therapy. There, he worked on basics like making eye contact and organizing his thoughts—skills that helped him better navigate both personal life and the demands of his writing career. He began as a ghostwriter and book doctor, eventually becoming a bestselling author in his own right. JD credits autism for giving him a unique mental edge—he can juggle eight books at once, all meticulously organized in his head. While public speaking remains a challenge—he once went two years without speaking to anyone—he now co-hosts Writers Inc., a podcast where he interviews fellow authors about their creative journeys. As a therapist who works to make learners successful across the lifespan, it's interesting and encouraging to hear from autistic adults. I have to say that this episode was such a pleasure to record.  I was lucky enough to meet a young woman named Lindsay and chat with her and her mom. You see, Lindsey is autistic and struggled with things like communication and social interaction as she grew up.    She endured bullying and isolation.  She is a testimant to perservernce.  In one word, she's amazing.  I can't wait to share her story and tell you what she is doing now, as a 30-year-old autistic woman.  You are definitely going to want to listen right away. Topics Discussed: Autistic child and adult lived experience Reflections from the mom of an autistic woman Autism and bullying Autism and employment Lindsey's bio: I was diagnosed with autism at 28 months. I was non-verbal and had severe tantrums. My family was given very little hope of me having a bright future. When I was 17 years old, I got the opportunity to see a presentation given by Temple Grandin, an activist and person living with autism. After she was done speaking, I went up to her and said, "I have autism, too." She replied,"Great. Now what are your strengths and goals? Do that." There was a point in high school when I would come home and just do art naturally, and the more I drew, the more I wanted to create. I am the proud Illustrator for Koda The Fluff. I'm inspired by so many passions in life and when I think of something, I just want to draw it. Like the movie Titanic, the character Betty Boop, or my favorite artist of all time, Frida Kahlo, whose portrait I draw over and over again. Despite growing up with autism, I am fortunate to have strong support from my family and the inspiration that Temple gave me to do more with my life.  As my mom would say, "There were a lot of ups and downs," so it inspired us to tell our family story in a book I co-wrote with my aunt Linda Wagner, Autism: A Family Lives Beyond the Label. Each of us contributed our own perspective in hopes it will support other families. We also have a Little Lindsey series of biographical children's books. Little Lindsey Gets a Haircut, Little Lindsey is a Picky Eater, Little Lindsey Makes a Friend, and Little Lindsey Goes to Therapy, a Sibling Story.  My second language is Spanish. I was so happy to be hired by Target to support them as one of their Spanish-speaking team members. The experience at Target has been good for me. I've found everyone to be very inclusive and they work with me on anything I need. I'm glad to say I'm a proud University of WI-River Falls Associate of Arts and Sciences graduate. I've had many opportunities to present and share my story of autism with interested audiences, and have met and interacted with so many different people. Three years ago, I bought a house with my sister Brittany. These, and all the experiences I have along the way, provide me with the inspiration to continue to live up to my strengths and goals. One of the least understood, and most marginalized groups of autistic people are those who are non-speaking, or who have minimal or unreliable speech due to neurologically-based motor speech disorders. Nonspeakers' “voices” are now being heard, and what they have to say is shattering erroneous stereotypes about those for whom speech is not their primary mode of communication. Harmful beliefs about how speech and behavior are accurate reflections of a person's intelligence and social awareness are being discarded. We initially spoke three years ago with Ian Nordling, a young autistic man who has benefitted from Spelling to Communicate (S2C), and Elizabeth Vosseller, who developed (S2C). In this episode, we get an update on progress for non-speakers. Learn more about this episode on our website!  Follow us on social media

A great and harmful myth perpetuated for decades is that autistic people are incapable of deep connection, empathy, and loving relationships with others. Over the years, diagnostic criteria have included wording to this effect. We now know that this generalization is inaccurate, largely due to an understanding that autistic children and adults may “show up” in different ways in relationships. As with all people, however, the desire to connect and develop trusting and loving relationships is clearly a part of the autistic experience. Dave and Barry discuss these issues from a historical, clinical, and first person perspective. Find out useful resources and learn more on the episode's website!

I wrote it for entrepreneurs like me. I wanted them to know that if they have a solid idea and a strong work ethic, they can make their vision a reality. I came from no business training, but I always had a knack for it. I didn't have a business degree. I didn't have formal training. I didn't have a big investor. I didn't have a whole lot of money. What I did have was a really strong work ethic and a desire to succeed. I wanted to build a business that could work, that would support my family, that would make the world a better place for people. It became a reality. I wrote it for my fellows who suffer chronic anxiety. I wanted them to know they were not alone. Even though we may never completely be free of anxiety, we can rise above it and find new ways to be at peace with ourselves and the world. We can take care of ourselves and advocate for our mental health. We can learn to be resilient and ride the ebbs and flows of chronic anxiety. Finally, I wrote it for the 20-year-old whose life is not going so hot, like mine once was. It could be addiction, or crime, or a series of bad choices they just can't get past. I was stuck in a lifestyle I knew wasn't me, but I kept going with it, kept making those bad choices and hurting people. Yet my life turned around. I learned to channel my drive in a new direction, a healthy direction. It didn't happen overnight, but eventually, my life started on an upward trajectory that today actually helps people and creates good in the world. If you're like I once was, your life can turn around, too. Today, my main goal in life is to help others, which is why I wrote From Turmoil to Triumph. In these pages, I share the good, the bad, and the ugly. A lot of it is not flattering. But if it can change someone else's life, it's worth it."

In his first description of autism, Leo Kanner noted that “insistence on preservation of sameness” was a distinguishing characteristic of autistic individuals. This may be manifest in a number of characteristics including “resistance to change”  and the need to maintain routines that have been established in daily activities. Often such patterns may be manifest throughout the lifespan and too often, are described primarily as problematic and as a “symptom” of autism. But what if rather than viewing “control” through the lens of pathology, we consider the “deep why”. That is, from the perspective of the person who is viewed as controlling, what functions might be served by such patterns? Barry and Dave discuss the issue of control from their own personal experiences.  Explore more about the episode Find more episodes of De-Pathologizing Series

Having an autistic adult on the podcast is always an opportunity to learn how we, as practitioners, can do our best for our clients. Joining me today is Larissa Minner, a passionate and experienced disability rights advocate, speaker, and consultant. Burnout is commonly talked about, and I've even done an episode where we talked about professional burnout in the field. Larissa talks about Autistic Burnout and Neurodivergent Burnout and what that looks like for many individuals. Signs and symptoms of Autistic (or Nuerodivergent) Burnout can include feeling drain in all aspects of life, an increase in executive functional challenges, a lowered coping skill level, regression and loss of skills, brain fog, physical fatigue, mimicking and causing depression/anxiety, and even being a factor involved in suicidal ideation. This causes a lot of problems for autistic individuals, like finding a job or making their way through university. So what can we do? As professionals, we can provide Neuro Affirming Environments. A Neuro Affirming Environment applies to social, emotional, and physical aspects, and Larissa explains some ways to do that without putting the burden on the autistic person. Firstly, use the person's preferred language, whether they prefer Autistic Person or Person with Autism. Also developing language that is not based on a person's deficit; for example, Larissa uses the term Strategic Explorer to verbalize her preference for routine. Additionally, consider sensory friendly rooms with adjustable lighting and noise accommodations, validations in different listening and communicating skills, and always giving ample warning when it comes to events and changes. Larissa is active in making changes across the field for both autistic children and autistic adults when it comes to healthcare, education, and career opportunities. This is a great conversation that shares some less talked about advocacy for autistic people and encourages professionals to check themselves when it comes to providing compassionate care.  #autism #speechtherapy  What's Inside:What is Autistic Burnout? What are signs and symptoms of Autistic Burnout? What is a Neuro Affirming Environment? How can providers be Neuro Affirming?Advocacy goals for education, healthcare, and career finding. The importance of preferred language surrounding autism and disabilities. Mentioned In This Episode:You can participate in her ongoing research study at Shape in Healthcare Survey (Healthcare Equality)You can find out more about Larissa and her work at: https://linktr.ee/larissaminner

Tiffany Hammond wears many hats. First, she is the loving mother of two autistic children, a developmental psychologist who provides professional consultation and she has a huge network with her Instagram  following on “Fidgets and Fries”. Based on her experiences as both a professional and a mother, as well as the way she has been treated herself as an autistic person, she has become a fierce, social justice activist. She also is a talented writer. We discuss issues she feels passionately about, as well as her forthcoming book, inspired by her son, “A Day with No Words”.   Visit the Episode's Website for more info
