“Whether you believe in ghosts or not—these stories are true.” –Ghosts & Specters by Bruce and Nancy Roberts Being a kid can be scary. In the premiere episode of Richard Hatem's Paranormal Bookshelf, Richard takes us on a nostalgic journey back to his childhood discovery of the book that changed everything. Travel back to 1974 as he recounts the pivotal moment when Aunt Sally gifted him Ghosts & Specters by Bruce and Nancy Roberts. This slim hardback, filled with haunting tales and eerie photographs, ignited Richard's fear and imagination and sparked a complicated lifelong fascination with the strange and unexplained that would later fuel his screenwriting career. While Ghosts & Specters by Bruce and Nancy Roberts may seem unlikely to inspire an entire life, to Richard, it is anything but. It started him on a journey into the unknown, and he's never looked back. Published by Doubleday, this collection of 10 stories describes ghostly apparitions and happenings paired with ghoulish photographs that seem to creep right out of the pages and into reality. Each tale within these pages transports readers to a world where the inexplicable becomes possible, and fear gives way to fascination (and then moves back to fear again). Maybe YOU have a book just like this on your shelf. It terrified you so completely that you couldn't put it down. Or, even stranger, maybe this is the same book that brought you to this podcast. Join Richard as he reflects on the power of books that act as a beacon into the unknown and the transformative journey that book lovers and librarians can have in our lives.

IMES SQUARE BILLBOARD PROMISES A FREE FACE MASK FOR EVERY AMERICAN Sustainable Activewear Company DHVANI Launches Fundraiser to Fight COVID-19 by Providing Free CDC-Recommended Masks to All 327 Million Americans PORTLAND, OR -- DHVANI, the Activ(ist)Wear brand, today unveiled a Times Square billboard promising “A Mask for Every American.” The red, white and blue billboard features the internet address DHVANI.com/FreeMasks – a web page where anyone can request a free face mask, and donate to help supply masks. The billboard kicks off a fundraising campaign to provide all 327 million American residents with a free face mask to protect themselves and others from the COVID-19 pandemic. The company will provide medical-grade masks to healthcare professionals and reusable cloth masks to the general public, per recommendations from U.S. Centers for Disease Control. This is a personal issue for DHVANI’s co-founder and chief of operations, Kanayochukwu Onwuama. Onwuama first learned of the seriousness of the personal protective equipment (PPE) shortages in the New York City area from his mother Joy Austin, a registered nurse at Elmhurst Hospital in Queens, NY. “When my mom told me she’d been using the same disposable mask for a whole week, my stomach dropped, and I couldn’t help but cry,” said Onwuama. “I immediately knew I had to do something.” “We hope nobody actually sees the billboard because they’re sheltering in place,” said Avi Brown, DHVANI’s co-founder and chief executive. “Unprecedented times require unprecedented action. It’s up to all of us to put an end to the COVID-19 pandemic. With the help of donations from the public, we’re using our manufacturing and distribution resources to put a mask on every face in America.” The two founders quickly decided to help the American people fight the virus, which has already caused around 170,000 deaths worldwide, one in four of which have been in the U.S. In Portland, where DHVANI is headquartered, the company made an initial donation of 10,000 medical-grade face masks to Providence St. Vincent Medical Center and an additional 1,000 to essential workers such as grocery store employees. Its next donation of 10,000 masks will be delivered to Elmhurst Hospital. "Providence is grateful for DHVANI's mask donation," said Nancy Roberts, chief operating officer of Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. "Every caregiver in a patient care area, no matter what their role, wears a mask for their shift. Donation
Today we talk about diversity, inclusion and equality, particularly in the workplace. This is one of those topics that is important, but polarising – the famous Jordan Peterson / Cathy Newman interview of a few months ago being a good case in point. Our insights aren't really data-based, and that's crazy because it's 2019. Data is the new oil. And diversity might also be an organisational superpower, particularly at the top. Diversity of opinions and backgrounds are excellent ways to manage risks and counteract cognitive biases. It can actually improve the bottom line. Moreover, if our large institutions and organisations are more reflective of our society at large, this could arguably lead to better management of some of the biggest challenges we face. Our guest today has made it her mission to do exactly that. Meet Nancy Roberts, founder of Umbrella Analytics. Umbrella applies Artificial Intelligence to deliver diversity. Nancy is an incredible entrepreneur with tremendous vision and insight. After years of directly witnessing inequality in the publishing industry and the slow, very incremental pace of change, she decided to do something about it. Addressing this stuff requires data and facts, not diatribes, myths and legends. Umbrella was born. We get into all of that and more including: The data on inequality; Differences between men and women in the workplace – and for my male audience, please listen to this!; Organisational culture and why people “go native” in large organisations; Quantifying culture; How organisations can alter the language they use in internal and external communications to reflect greater diversity and obtain numerous benefits; Much more Show notes: Umbrella Analytics On Twitter On LinkedIn On Instagram Nancy's blog on Medium Nancy on Unconscious Bias Training Escape the City The Jordan Peterson / Cathy Newman interview NASA and the space walk cancellation because of lack of women's sized space suits Why Do So Many Incompetent Men Become Leaders?: (And How to Fix It) by Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic The Peter Principle _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Like what you heard? For episode 50, I've looked back at the past year of interviews and put together a compilation of some of the best bits - or, at least, some memorable ones for me! In this episode, I look back at why people set up a publishing business, whether it's a small publisher, a tech business or something else. Reasons range from being made redundant, through frustration with how the industry works, to a simple passion for doing something else. This episode features extracts from interviews with Emma Barnes (episode 3), Alison Jones (episode 7), Ken Jones (episode 8), Bec Evans (episode 17), Justo Hidalgo (episode 18), Nancy Roberts (episode 20), Kate Wilson (episode 22), John Bond (episode 28) and Dominique Raccah (episode 29).
Linen, Uniform & Facility Services Podcast - Interviews & Insights by TRSA
Nancy Roberts, also known as The DISC Wizard, is a certified behavioral analyst that helps clients use assessments, coaching and training to navigate the hiring process and get better performance from their staff. Roberts joined the podcast to talk about her recent article in Textile Services magazine and her upcoming educational session at TRSA’s Healthcare Conference, as well as to share her insights on improving your organization’s recruiting and hiring practices. For more information on the Linen, Uniform & Facility Services Podcast, go to www.trsa.org/podcasts.
Nancy Roberts took time off from a successful career in publishing to work out what she really wanted to do, and how she could continue growing. Her answer to that was first Business Inclusivity (consulting with publishing companies to help them understand and improve their diversity and inclusivity) and recently Umbrella Analytics (providing hard data, comparison and analysis to back this up). In the podcast, we talk about how Nancy took the opportunity afforded her by an MBA to reflect on her career, and then to combine two passions to create something new. Her work has brought home to her the importance of top-down ownership of culture and change in a business - but also the way that both can be driven strongly from the bottom up, by people in an organisation who want change if they can only find ways to do it. Those at the bottom often underestimate their power in the workplace!
