“And I took that personally”. That was how the eccentric founder of Tokpork, Phon Yung Hou, felt when he was making RM300 a day in sales which paled in comparison to the others around him at Restoran Yum Me Place. There may have been a tease or two from the business owners around him that Tokpork was more hobby than business.Phon wasn't always in the business of selling Nasi Lemak, but with the support from his former boss Leon Foong, the former Uber Malaysia boss and then SOCAR Malaysia CEO, he eventually got into the nasi lemak business, after testing a few other food ideas. With Leon helping Phon with the stall deposit, Phon used his last pay-check from SOCAR as working capital and set up shop at a kopitiam in the Bukit Damansara, which he still operates from today. Things were tough at the start, but as he says in this conversion, “it's about the game” and he wanted to continue to play it. In the early days Phon was only making RM300 a day in sales, but this all changed following a KL Foodie video which ignited his business. The morning after the video was released, Phon was sold out before lunch, even after preparing extra food.In this episode, you will hear about the origins of this business in more detail and why he gave up his career to go into the ever challenging food business. We'll also explore his larger ambitions, why he wants to go into entertainment (and what he means by that), and the long term ambitions to build Tokpork and eventually sell it.

3 NGOs have filed for a judicial review at the High Court to challenge the Health Minister and the Government on the decision to amend the Poison Act 1952. These amendments allow eCigarette and vapes to be sold to anyone without any legal consequences. So a child can now buy a vape as easily as a packet of nasi lemak. Sham and Vik talk about hawker street stalls, Nasi Lemak, Rendang, roti, Kuey Teow soup, coconut, tamarind, sambal, and that polarizing fruit, the spiky, somewhat pungent Durian! They mention the Malay love of strong coffee. Plus recent Ireland arrival and chocolate sommelier Shobitha Ramadasan chips in about Malaysian cacao. Doses of Malaysian Stories Thru' the Lenses & Senses of Deanna
Malaysia is just so diverse in terms of people, cultures, arts, songs, language, life styles, festivals ooh the list is just endless. But the one thing that connects Malaysians - is FOOD !!! Yeah, that's right Food, No matter what community we represent, there is always one food that we all love as Malaysians.. and it's widely consumed and available to all, that is the Nasi Lemak- this is one food that ALL yes I mean ALL Malaysians have eaten before. If you don't believe me.. I set a challenge to all of you my beloved listeners - Try to identify a Malaysian ( wherever you are !! whichever part of the globe you are ) who has never eaten Nasi Lemak before !!! If you can identify this person,, let me know !! I would love to get to know him/ or her !!! But I doubt you can find this person at all !! haha. Nasi Lemak is designated as our Malaysia national dish ! It started off as a very simple dish- of fragrant rice cooked with coconut milk accompanied with fried anchovies, 2-3 slices of cucumber, half of a hard boiled egg -sometime, 2-3 strands of greens of kangkong- or water spinach- a local vegetables leafs like the sweet potatoes grown here in SE Asia. And this nasi lemak used to be taken for breakfast. Because of it's popularity, it has gone on to be taken for lunch and dinner. And there are also so many ways of presentation this simple dish. Today I bring to you, Med Pang - a Malaysian who has been residing in the UK for the last 21years. And he presently runs a stall at The Spice Lab, a Malaysia street food stall at Mercato Mayfair, serving this national cuisine. His Nasi Lemak is presented in a most unique way while displaying the uniqueness of our Malaysian cuisine. I hope you enjoyed my conversation with him and if you are in London. do drop in at his stall and try this special Malaysian dish- the Nasi Lemak! Once again, thank you for hanging out with me. I really do appreciate it very much and I look forward to be with you in my next episode. Selamat Tinggal and Bye !!!

Sometimes, you have to go back to something that you love, and when you can turn that something you love into a business, there's potential for something great. Just off Andrews Avenue in Sembawang, this place has been the subject of many ghost stories. Pineapples on pizza? $300 for a Nasi Lemak? Hipster food? Shi-ma?!
"The lone wolf dies, but the pack survives", you might recognize this quote from a particular HBO series, Game of Thrones. You might find it strange, what has this quote got to do with my guest today? As humans, like many other species, we are herd animals who are trying to fit in and earn the respect of others. How we decide our behaviour is based on the degree that it allows us to fit in to your environment and social circle. I am lucky to be surrounded by extremely passionate band members during my time in school and at the centre of it all is Siang Hong. The band major that shows up at 2pm every single day (apart from exam periods) to the band store and starts practicing and we would leave school between 530-6pm. After 2 years of observing his dedication, I felt like I had to do the same when I assume a similar position and I was more than happy to do so!On hindsight, if there is a word that can be used to describe him will be "consistent". Apart from the band room, him and I spent a bulk of our free time at the basketball court. Even the way he played basketball was the same, he does the same thing time and time again, he keeps scoring and there is nothing you could do.. During our years in NAFA, he would have absolutely no issue going to the same Nasi Lemak store just next to school every single day. Perhaps that is the secret to his life. On this episode, we speak about the travelling woes of a tubist, how chamber music has helped him develop as a musician, auditioning at different countries.Check out Concerts go Online organized by the Wind Band Association of Singapore to see Siang Hong in action along with other Singaporean talent!Thank you so much for tuning in to this episode of the podcast! America is famous for well infamous for being one of the fattest countries in the world. Mike, you said that in Singapore diet is something of an issueas well, can you please explain?Mike: Right, well we have all the usual burger joints, Pizza Place, all the fast food basically in Singapore are also and because a lot of us are busy working so naturally this food actually seem like a good idea because it saves us a lot of time and if you're working in a city like Singapore, during lunchtime, you don't have time to basically queue with everybody for food and stuff ... so, fast food are actually a good alternative to get your lunch. And on top of that, we have what we call, in Chinese, we call it "Kopitiam". What it means is "coffee shop" in English and these coffee shops they don't serve, they serve coffee also but a lot of it is actually local delicacies, and Singaporean food are famous for being delicious but very, very high in cholesterol.Clare: Well can you give me an example of a dish?Mike: OK, one of the famous dishes is actually originated from I think Malaysia or Indonesia. David Hears that "Prometheus" is getting the McYapandFries treatment After all the anticipation, we finally get to see the product of visionary director Ridley Scott’s return to Sci-fi on this week’s podcast, as Gavin and I review Prometheus. No need to worry about spoilers, as usual we steer well clear of those, however we will be discussing the plot in obsessive detail in a separate, spoiler-infected, Promethe-cast which should be available soon. Also this in this week’s show I also review Malaysian movie Nasi Lemak 2.0, we talk about new trailers for the latest from Quentin Tarantino, Denzel Washington and um...Disney Animation along with a few cool posters, and the usual distractions such as Gavin’s feelings on Jake GyllenHATE. Show Notes Trailer for Quentin Tarantino's latest, Django Unchained Bill Murray's cool Video Autograph Trailer for Flight starring Denzel Wasahington and directed by Robert Zemekis Trailer for End of Watch (Training Day 3) strarring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña Cool Dark Knight Rises poster featuring catwoman, (or at least some of her) First cool poster for Dredd First pic of Idris Elba in Pacific Rim The trailer for Gavin’s dream team up of Jennifer Lawrence and  Elisabeth Shue, The House at the End of the Street Herer's a link to the demeted Italian Sci-Fi movie, sent in by listener "Martian on Crack" Things! Of the week! Gavin’s Toy(s) of the week (for Transformers fans) Iain’s Toy of the week! Deal of the Week (for Battlestar Galactica fans) And finally, just to prove Gavin wrong here's the link to my 2009 review of Wristcuters:A Love Story
