Thoughts on the episode? Let us know.Sarah Davis was a corporate risk manager who began to chafe at the limitations on her life.Sure, she had a safe job and a comfortable income. She ran marathons (3:38 PR — damn!) and was living the dream in Bondi, Australia. But something was missing. When Sarah interrogated herself, she realized that she wasn't living as big or as bold as she wanted.Did risk management always have to be about minimizing risk at all cost? Or could the principles of risk management inform and guide actual risk taking?Could she use her professional skill set in tandem with her experience in surf sea kayaking and her love of travel and her pursuit of novelty to do something big and bold and amazing? In our conversation, we talk about the life lessons learned as she became the first woman to paddle the Nile River from its headwaters in Rwanda all the way to the Nile Delta in Egypt.I hope you're inspired to step outside of any comfort zones that have got you stuck. I hope you're inspired to identify a passion project and pursue it. And I hope you stay safe and well the whole time!A couple of the quotable quotes from this episode, as identified by AI:"Control the controllables""Life is for living"LinksSarahJDavis.comPaddle the Nile: One Woman's Search for a Life Less Ordinary, by Sarah DavisInstagram: @sarahpaddlesSarah's LinkedIn profileSarah's YouTube channelClick to subscribe to the Mindset Mastery Memo.Support the show
Best known for the 2004 hit “Life Less Ordinary,” the indie rock band Carbon Leaf has been at it since the early 1990s. That's when they got their start in Richmond, Virginia, alongside the likes of the Dave Matthews Band, Cracker, GWAR, Fighting Gravity, the Pat McGee Band, and more. The band just released its much-anticipated new album, “Time is the Playground,” Carbon Leaf's first full-length record in a decade. The album blends nostalgic storytelling with nuanced, folk-infused indie rock, and is a brilliant rumination on time, love and personal growth that features both rediscovered musical fragments and brand new material. We recently caught up with Carbon Leaf founder Barry Privett on The Load Out music podcast to discuss all that is Carbon Leaf.
Carbon Leaf has been playing on stage since 1992 with over 3,500 shows under their belts. Their 2004 album Indian summer was a hug success with songs like "Life Less Ordinary" and "What about everything?". The band is releasing their new album Time Is The Playground on September 27th and their lead singer Barry Privett was nice enough to stop by the show! Barry and Doc talk about the last time he was on the show, what happened with the band over the last 5 years, the making of the new album, 1983 and so much more! Meanwhile, Doc and Mike talk about the possibility of eating ortolans, being on never ending cruises and eating at generic food court Chinese restaurants. Listen now! Mark Little attended Trinity College Dublin before becoming an award-winning foreign correspondent and TV anchor for the national TV station RTÉ. He also presented the network's top-rated current affairs programme, Prime Time, and was its first Washington correspondent. He has covered some of the biggest stories of the 21st century, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the election of Barack Obama. In 2010 he took a leave of absence to establish Storyful, a social news agency that pioneered new models of verification and collaboration. He sold Storyful to News Corp in 2013 and went on to work with Twitter (now X), first as VP of Media Partnerships in Europe and later as MD. In 2016, he left that position to set up the digital news venture Kinzen (originally NevaLabs). Kinzen provides data and research to trust and safety professionals, content moderators and public policymakers, helping them deal with threats such as dangerous misinformation, hateful content, violent content, violent extremism and dangerous organisations. Kinzen was acquired by Spotify in 2022.
28 Days Later is a 2002 British post-apocalyptic horror film, our first film from the 21st Century. Ewan McGregor was the original choice to play the protagonist, ‘Jim', but he and director Danny Boyle had a falling-out at the time over The Beach, in which McGregor was to play the lead but was replaced by Leonardo DiCaprio (McGregor and Boyle have since reconciled). After McGregor, the role was offered to Ryan Gosling, who passed, having a scheduling conflict, leading to the film being offered to the relatively unknown Cillian Murphy. Danny Boyle films include: Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, A Life Less Ordinary, The Beach, Sunshine and 127 Hours. He was the artistic director for the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics, which he was offered a knighthood but declined. In 2011 he directed Frankenstein on stage for the National Theatre, with dual Holmes's: Cumberbatch and Miller, (that James was lucky enough to see live). Regular collaborator with Boyle, writer and director Alex Garland (who wrote this film) has a filmography that includes: Never Let Me Go, Dredd, Ex Machina, (for which he received an Oscar nomination), Annihilation and the fantastically bonkers ‘Men'. Garland has said he took inspiration for 28 days later from George A. Romero's Living Dead film series and John Wyndham's 1951 novel The Day of the Triffids. The crew filmed during early mornings and temporarily closed streets to capture recognisable and typically busy areas when they were deserted. For the scene in which Jim walks by the overturned double-decker bus, the crew placed the bus on its side and removed it when the shot was finished, all within 20 minutes. They had asked permission to place the bus outside Downing Street, but Westminster City Council refused. When they arrived at 4am and nobody from the council was present, they placed it there anyway. One of the first mainstream films to be shot entirely digitally, it was a financial success., grossing more than $82.7 million worldwide on its modest budget of $8 million, it became one of the most profitable horror films of 2002. Producer Andrew Macdonald had access to funding from the National Lottery, and pitched it to Universal Pictures, who declined to support it. Budget constraints proved to be an issue, with Christopher Eccleston having to take an emergency pay cut during filming. Macdonald announced to the crew that the production had run out of money, and filming ceased without a closing sequence being shot. After pitching several endings, the original, which featured Jim's death, tested badly with audiences, the studio granted more funding to film the ending scene that was eventually used. The crew organised for a real jet to fly overhead for them to film, as this was cheaper than approximately £70,000 for a computer-generated one. Despite Boyle not considering it a zombie film, 28 Days Later is credited with reinvigorating the zombie genre and influencing a revival in the decade after its release, with its fast-running monsters and character-driven drama. The film was followed by the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later and Boyle and Garland have been reportedly working on a 3rd part entitled “28 Years Later” (which may or may not be being released in 3 parts - depending on what rumours you read). Imagine waking up one day, taking a moment to reflect on everything you've done, only to realize that everything should have been… well, more. Not in the materialistic sense, but more in-depth, more in enthusiasm, more in meaning. This isn't about being greedy or trying to avoid regrets. If you've read Dan Pink's book "The Power of Regrets," you'll understand it's not about regret avoidance. It's more about truly understanding and defining what 'enough' feels like for you. Discover the three key steps to redefine your life and unlock your full potential in wealth management. Expect more of yourself. Redefine what you think is possible for yourself. Re-evaluate your strategy, and when necessary, change it. The challenge to ask yourself today is, are you living a life less ordinary? Take time to reflect on what 'more' looks like for you and whether you're on that path. For show notes and resources discussed in this episode, visit tammacapital.com/podcast. After the smashing success of TRAINSPOTTING, Danny Boyle reteamed with star Ewan McGregor and writer John Hodge to…make a movie where Dan Hedaya plays the Archangel Gabriel, Stanley Tucci plays a cuck dentist, and Ewan has one of the worst haircuts in the history of cinema? Shockingly, 1997's A LIFE LESS ORDINARY was not a hit. Actress and comedian Janet Varney (The Legend of Korra, “The JV Club”) joins us as we attempt to make sense of this bizarro road trip romance. Dr. Paul Wichansky was born with cerebral palsy and a hearing loss. Some people might consider these challenges that cannot be overcome, but Dr. Paul is the opposite. In his recent bestselling book, "Yes I Can! Lessons Learned From A Life Less Ordinary," he shares stories about times when people initially thought differently of him, and then were surprised to find out how much he has achieved. His attitude of positivity is an inspiration to all of us, and through his presentations and his writing, he continues to spread a message of "ability" rather than "disability." It is a pleasure to welcome Dr. Paul to our show to share more about his life, his message, and his book. -------- You can learn more about Dr. Paul at: justthewayyouare.com And his book is available on Amazon: https://bit.ly/3VdCvD9

Episode 9 Part 2 is all about Living a Life Less Ordinary with Phil & Penny Kirk We got cut off during our interview, so we resumed the next day for Part 2. I didn't want you to miss any of the gems that Phil & Penny dropped, especially around how to live life in the flow AND intentionally create your life. (hint: they're not mutually exclusive.) *If you missed Part 1, head back to last week's interview first – this episode will then make so much more sense. Phil and Penny are two of the most fascinating, heart-centered, and genuine human beings I've had the privilege of meeting and having in my life for the past 20 years. They epitomize creating and living a life less ordinary – their years have been filled with the accumulation of experiences. They've been professional athletes, coaches, parents of 3 musician sons, and business owners just to name a few titles – and by choice, they've moved 37 times in their 50 years of marriage in an ongoing quest for new adventure and letting go of attachment to “stuff”. From NY to New Mexico, from farms to monasteries, from construction companies to manufacturing supplements, from owning The Abominable Snowman Lodge to building an international network marketing team, they have lived a rich and varied life with a combined 80+ years of experience in the pursuit of wellness, purpose and what truly matters in life. What we cover in Part 2: How to go with the flow AND create an intentional life Contraction as a sign that it's time for a change What's beyond gratitude? The addiction to fear and how to break the cycle What prevents most people from creating a life they love How to use technology to our advantage Working in the slums of India What most people miss when setting goals What grief, death, and failure can teach you How to stay relevant I met Phil & Penny when researching what network marketing company I wanted to partner with, after selling my first NWM business. Over the past 20 years, they have been the best mentors I could have asked for, and also 2 of my favorite people in the world, because of their outlook on life, their wisdom, their hearts – and every time I talk to them they're up to something new, fun and mind-expanding. Let's dive in and explore what it means to create a life less ordinary in livelihood, experiences, and a beautiful, connected relationship of over 50 years. Episode 8 is all about Living a Life Less Ordinary with Phil & Penny Kirk. Phil and Penny are two of the most fascinating, heart-centered, and genuine human beings I've had the privilege of meeting and having in my life for the past 20 years. I met Phil & Penny when I was researching what network marketing company I wanted to partner with, after selling my first NWM business. Over the past 20 years, they have not only been the best sponsors and mentors I could have asked for, but they're also 2 of my favorite people in the world – because of their outlook on life, their wisdom, their hearts – and every time I talk to them they're up to something new, unusual, fun and mind-expanding. What we cover: What created their seeking + adventurous nature Spiritual awakening of witnessing yourself – being the observer Wanderlust and seeing the world as a person, not a tourist 5 Crucial Elements for Health Eating for what you do + the environment you live in Limitations of holding onto beliefs too tightly Using values + resonance for making decisions in your life Following your heart and curiosity Cremation + Agora Monks in India How to have a lasting + connected relationship after 50 years How to handle recessions and what mindset to have I can't wait to introduce Phil & Penny to you as we explore what it means to create a life less ordinary in livelihood, experiences and a connected relationship of over 50 years. Important – we got cut off ¾ the way through and had to finish recording the next day. So next week Episode 9 will be the last ¼ so you don't miss any of their wisdom! So don't be surprised when the interview just ends abruptly – that's exactly what happened and we'll start next week, where we left off. Alright. Let's dive in. Alexandra Adams was the first guest on this podcast, and the inspiration behind starting A Life Less Ordinary. She's also a medical student who is deaf-blind. In 2020 she went into hospital with symptoms of an undiagnosed chronic illness and was there for 17 months during which time she massively deteriorated and experienced some shocking mistreatment at the hands of medical staff and some hugely traumatic experiences, including having covid in hospital in the midst of the pandemic. Alexandra shares these experiences as well as that of finding her community online of others with chronic illnesses. She tells me of how earlier this year she managed to find a renewed sense of purpose and was able to get back on her medicine degree, as well as a job as a phlebotomist. Sharing her story more recently on Tiktok she blew it up with her myth-busting videos about being a deaf-blind medical student. Alexandra talks openly in this interview about her mental health struggles and she shares some wonderful advice on how to cope with setbacks.TW: In this episode Alexandra tells me about some shocking stories of mistreatment and lack of care whilst in hospital. It is acknowledged that staff were under immense pressure and there was a huge lack of resources and staffing during this period. Fingers are not being pointed. Alexandra is merely sharing her experiences and her learning from this challenging time. Find Alexandra at @alexandraelaineadams and Sophie at @sophieelwes.

We all learn differently. Visually. Auditory. Verbal. Social. How do you learn best? Do you know? Turns out, Ira didn't even realize how he learned best until this episode, so it's a super valuable question to ask! Also, Josh recommends True Detective and Ira recommends (specifically for Josh, but you're welcome to go along for the ride:) Forgetting Sarah Marshall and (a very early) Danny Boyle's A Life Less Ordinary.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today, we've got a great guest on to talk about a great Scotsman - Ewan McGregor! Conor and Dan are blessed to have the wonderful Fiona Underhill (of JumpCut Online) on to talk through the (still, somehow) underrated actor's incredibly diverse career. We focus on: The Pillow Book, A Life Less Ordinary, Down With Love, and Perfect Sense. We dish on Ewan's iconic looks, the full frontal nudity that punctuated his early films, the conflicted accent work, that James Joyce movie he did, and the long feud between him and Danny Boyle that happened because of The Beach. Additional items include the animated film Robots (from the now-shuttered studio Blue Sky), an especially-effective short film called Desserts, and Max Richter's luminous score for Perfect Sense. And, last but not least, a special shout-out to Mark Osborne's magnificent short film More, which deserves to be seen by everyone. Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Krystal Kenney fell in love with Paris as a teenager after visiting as part of a school trip. Living in the United States at the time, she dreamed of moving internationally and several years later she made it happen. She now lives in the city of light: Paris, France where she explores her creative talents in many different ways. She's a professional photographer who specializes in capturing candid moments and special memories for locals and visitors to Paris. And when the COVID-19 pandemic arrived, meaning no one was taking vacations or holding special events that would benefit from her talents as a photographer, what did she do? She got creative! Krystal launched a podcast called La Vie Creative, where she shines a light on the stories of creative people, past and present, from Paris as well as other spots in France. She even teamed up with another storyteller, Claudine Hemingway, to add even more incredible stories to the show. Most recently she wrote and released her book, a memoir, called Paris, A Life Less Ordinary. On this episode, host Angela de Burger chats with Krystal about the creative inspiration she draws from Paris, as well as from photographing people celebrating engagements, weddings and birthdays. Krystal offers insights into how she developed her creative style and the process of writing her new book. She also shares lots of inside info about how her podcast came to be, and the benefits of collaborating on creative projects.
