Are we Educating Citizens or Consumers? A Conversation with Jon Alexander

Future Learning Design Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2025 44:33

Are we educating young people as consumers? Have educational institutions become service providers in the consumer economy of educational products?  Or are we educating young people as citizens - of their local communities, nations and the planet? If so what does that mean for how we engage them in the  processes of living and working together, making meaningful contributions and learning important things as they go.  I'm not sure that that looks much like what we're currently doing in most schools around the world. Jon Alexander is on a mission to help a new story to emerge about how people all over the world are getting involved in 'citizening' - that is, thinking of citizen as a verb and a local participatory responsibility, rather than citizen as a noun that you claim rights to.Jon began his career with success in advertising, winning the prestigious Big Creative Idea of the Year before making a dramatic change. Driven by a deep need to understand the impact on society of 3,000 commercial messages a day, he gathered three Masters degrees, exploring consumerism and its alternatives from every angle. In 2014, he co-founded the New Citizenship Project, a strategy and innovation consultancy that aims to shift the dominant story of the individual in society from Consumer to Citizen. NCP's client list includes The Guardian, the European Central Bank, and the European Journalism Centre. They have partnered with the BBC, Amnesty International, National Trust, the British Film Institute, Tate galleries, the National Union of Students, YouGov, the Centre for Public Impact, the Food Standards Agency and the Food Ethics Council. Jon is author of Citizens: Why the Key to Fixing Everything is All of Us - a book that seeks to reframe the moment in time we're living in as one of huge civic opportunity, not just crisis and collapse, and in doing so opens up a world of possibility for organisations and leaders across sectors and across the world.Links to Jon's work:Citizens (Book): https://www.jonalexander.net/How to Citizen, with Baratunde Thurston: https://stories.howtocitizen.com/formNew Citizenship Project: https://www.newcitizenproject.com/Jon's Four Thought lecture, BBC Radio 4: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04md5b0Jon's NCP article on Three Post Covid Futures: https://medium.com/new-citizenship-project/subject-consumer-or-citizen-three-post-covid-futures-8c3cc469a984Jon on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jon-alexander-11b66345/Baratunde on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/baratunde/

DESCRIPTION  In this episode, Katie invites the "Queen of Breakups" Rosie Wilby to share her wisdom on surviving and even thriving after a breakup. Covering everything from the seven key reasons relationships end to handling the aftermath with friends and family, Rosie provides comfort, science-backed advice, and plenty of wry wit. You'll learn why the sadness comes in waves, the mental tricks to stop feeling so terrible, and how to set boundaries with your inner circle so they can actually help (not hinder!) your healing.  KEY TAKEAWAYS  Phone a trusted friend straight after the breakup conversation happens Write out a pros and cons list to gain clarity without the rose-tinted glasses Seek professional help if you're still struggling with closure years later Reinvent yourself by trying new hobbies, careers or travels after some time Don't rush into dating before you've had time to process the emotions Decline friends "helping" you too quickly if it doesn't feel right yet Understanding the science behind heartbreak makes you feel less alone Reframing the breakup as an exciting catalyst for positive change BEST MOMENTS "I actually went straight over to a friend's house. I rang her. It was really late at night and she was like, we are getting on a flight at 4am, but just come." "I found the writing out the cons really helpful... it's called a negative reappraisal strategy. When you look at the negatives...that clear-sightedness about the reasons why it was not the right person for you." "Be selfish. It's a great time to look after yourself and it's a great time to do that because you are thinking very inward about what do I want to do, how do I now fill my time." Today I am joined by award-winning U.K. comedian, author, and podcaster Rosie Wilby. Rosie delivers an empowering view of the unexpected joy of heartbreak. She offers the perspective of opportunities one can gain post-breakup and how society can begin to normalize that breakups can be positive and amicable. Rosie shares with us the idea behind her book, The Breakup Monologues, where she shares about several of the relationships she's had that have come to an end. Tune in today to uncover the positives that can be gained through heartbreak. In this episode: Rosie provides some background on her book, The Breakup Monologues. What made Rosie want to share her past relationships in a book? What are Rosie's major lessons from her breakups? How can you see a breakup as a gift when you're in the thick of it? How many breakups does Rosie talk about in her book? We can start normalizing the idea that divorce can be positive and amicable. How to work through a situation if you feel trapped when desiring a divorce. Key Takeaways: Being single can allow us to step back and look at the trajectory of our life and how we want to live as individuals without the pull of what your partner might want. Relationships and marriage get really busy, and being able to step back after a breakup provides excellent opportunities. Breakups provide self-knowledge about what you want in a future relationship, what's important to you, identifying your needs, and what you want to do differently in your next relationship. When you are in the thick of a breakup, reach out and get support. Hire a therapist or talk to a friend who can be supportive. It should be someone who will empower you and lift you up vs. pull you down and speak negatively. Quotes: “I do feel that breakups, although they are incredibly painful and really difficult and really challenging times, they do provide an opportunity for reflection and growth, and they can be a catalyst for real positive change.” - Rosie Wilby “Sometimes growing apart is really healthy growth. Sometimes we just grow individually and in good ways, but we happen to have gone in slightly different directions, and that's not a failing on our parts. We have this really toxic language, these binaries of success and failure, and somehow if we don't stay together, we've failed, whereas surely, if we've separated in a really healthy way, that might be really positive and really mature.” - Rosie Wilby Guest Bio: Rosie Wilby is an award-winning U.K. comedian, author, and podcaster who has appeared many times on BBC Radio 4 programmes including Woman's Hour, Saturday Live, and Four Thought. She embarked on a quest to investigate, understand and conquer the psychology of heartbreak...but in a humorous way.  We talked all things break ups and Rosie shared some really insightful answers that could help anyone who might be going through a break up or is struggling to get over the heart ache of one.  We spoke about the topic of Monogamy. And if it is dead. Rosie's Ted x talk, 'Is Monogamy Dead?' has now been viewed over 56K times on YouTube. So we knew we'd get a fascinating answer.  It was really interesting picking her brain on the topic of sex and finding out how important sex really is in a relationship. Rosie shared some results she collected from a survey about what is and isn't classified as cheating. The answers may be surprising to some people.  You won't want to miss a minute, so crank up the volume and tune into this incredible conversation with Rosie Wilby.    Purchase Rosie's book here - @breakupmonologues | Linktree Follow Rosie on Twitter @rosiewilby Follow Rosie on Instagram @breakupmonologues   Follow us on instagram - @dosandd_  Email us your questions as we would love to answer them on the show - thedosanddshow@gmail.com  It would mean the world to both of us if you could please leave a 5 star review to help us grow this community and empower more lives.

Clare Pooley joins Club Soda's Dru Jaeger to talk all things journalling. Clare decided to change her drinking when she noticed how much her wine habit was affecting her life. She worked in advertising, and her job required a lot of socialising and wining and dining with clients. Drinking was affecting her as a parent, she was gaining weight, and she was struggling with insomnia. She knew that moderation wasn't going to work for her, and so decided to stop drinking. Writing about her experiences was an intrinsic part of her changing her habits. This was done via an anonymous blog for some time. Who is Clare Pooley?Clare Pooley graduated from Newnham College, Cambridge and spent twenty years working in advertising before becoming a full-time mum. Realising that her ‘wine o'clock' habit was out of hand, Clare started writing a blog, Mummy was a Secret Drinker, which has had nearly three million hits. Her memoir, The Sober Diaries was published in 2017 to critical acclaim. Clare's debut novel - The Authenticity Project, was inspired by her own experience of exposing the rather grubby truth about her own seemingly perfect life. Clare's talks include a TEDx talk - ‘Making Sober Less Shameful', a talk for Radio 4's Four Thought, and numerous podcast interviews. Try our How To Journal course If you are interested in exploring more about journaling and how we can support each change, we're drinking Club Soda is short course How To Journal is available at join Club soda.com. For episode 4 of our Community series, we present to you the very man who changed our own perspective on community living years and years ago. The co-founder of the Transition Network and Transition Town Totnes, Mr Rob Hopkins! To give you a bit of background on Rob, he is the author of numerous books including, The Transition Handbook, 21 Stories of Transition and most recently, From What Is to What If: unleashing the power of imagination to create the future we want. He presents the podcast series ‘From What If to What Next‘. In 2012, he was voted one of the Independent's top 100 environmentalists and was on Nesta and the Observer's list of Britain's 50 New Radicals. Hopkins has also appeared on BBC Radio 4's Four Thought and A Good Read, in the French film phenomenon Demain and its sequel Apres Demain, and has spoken at TEDGlobal and three TEDx events. This was by far one of our favourite episodes. The expression ‘you should never meet your heroes' does not apply here. Rob was our hero 15 years when we first came across him, and now all these years later when we finally get to meet him, he is still our hero!"At the moment we measure the success of an economy by how much bigger it is than last year. Imagine with your kids; there is a while in the evolution of your children where the fact that they are bigger than they were last year is a good thing. They are growing in the right direction. If that was the only measure, and they just kept on growing and growing and growing, till they were about 50 metres tall… after a little while you would think something is going really really wrong here. Actually what you want is for your kids to grow, ideally to slightly shorter than you are! And then to start growing in different ways; become kinder, wiser, more skilled, more connected, and more resourceful. We don't have that assumption for our economy, we just say - ‘is it bigger than last year? Grand!' The fact that cancer rates are rising, anxiety is rising, and people are less and less able to walk home alone after dark, all the things that we don't want to happen in a society, we don't measure, we don't factor them in.”This quote says it all, he is a creative thinker who lets no walls or structures limit his imagination and willingness to strive for a better future. The ultimate doer and who leads by example. We delve into everything from how Totnes became a self-sufficient transition town to how you as an individual can start thinking outside the box and become the change you want to see happen to your own community.Enjoy! In this weeks episode I am speaking to Reggie Nelson. I first heard of Reggie Nelson when a friend started harassing my phone to get me to stop whatever I was doing and turn on Radio 4. It was broadcasting an interview with Reggie where he’d been asked to appear on Four Thought to speak about his extraordinary life transformation, which led him to gain one of the most senior members of investment management company, BlackRock, as a mentor, become Whatsapp pals with Theresa May, and host his own podcast for the BBC. It didn’t take me long to completely stop all I was doing, and just listen, transfixed. Not only was I hearing a beautiful piece of spoken word - which is how Reggie chose to deliver his story - but I also was in complete awe of this man’s story of survival, strength, resilience, determination and faith. He'd grown up with an absent father due to both alcoholism and separation, with his father’s death eventually acting as the catalyst that pushed him to make the changes that he did, and become who he is today. I needed to get him on Daddy Issues. I found him on Twitter, emailed him, and waited. Weeks later an email popped into my inbox with the green light, and weeks after that, we recorded this wonderful episode. I am SO in awe of this man, and can’t wait to watch him continue to flourish and change, in his own words, ‘as many other lives as possible’ whilst doing so. Happy listening!

Do you find it difficult to keep emotions out of business - especially when you feel let down? Many of us do it, but is it the best way to make decisions? This week we discuss the issue of disappointment and how we deal with it (or don’t!). Our conversation leads into the idea that disappointment is always closely related to expectations - when we expect something specific of a person or situation, we can feel hurt, angry or extremely disappointed when those expectations are not met. We have recently experienced a number of situations where we have either witnessed disappointment, caused disappointment, or felt disappointment and we examine this issue from each of these 3 perspectives. In this episode, we also discuss egotistical gurus, inspiring leaders, and the power of starting the week in creative flow. Rob Hopkins -- Transitioning and Transforming Our Communities: From What Is to What If

Awakin Call

Rob Hopkins is a cofounder of Transition Town Totnes and Transition Network. The Transition Town movement is an international network of grassroots projects that aim to foster local ecological resilience and self-sufficiency. A movement that has been growing since 2005 in 50 countries, it is about communities stepping up to address the big challenges they face by starting local. By supporting individuals to transition both in and out and then come together, the movement seeks to crowd-source solutions to nurture a caring culture, one focused on supporting each other as groups or as wider communities. In practice, Transition Towns are reclaiming the economy, sparking entrepreneurship, re-imagining work, re-skilling themselves and weaving webs of connection and support. Neighbors come together to plant community gardens, transform local schools, install their own renewable energy plants, create their own local currencies, and more. The first Transition Town started in Totnes, England, in 2006, by Rob and friends. They kickstarted 'open space' meetings for the community to convene around the themes of peak oil, climate change, and the local solutions to these issues. The message of combining our head, hand and heart, of transforming both the inner and outer landscapes, of daring to imagine and embracing the uncertainty of never-ending stories, soon went viral across the world. In 2012, Rob was voted one of the Independent’s top 100 environmentalists and was on Nesta and the Observer’s list of Britain’s 50 New Radicals. Hopkins has also appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Four Thought and A Good Read, in the French film phenomenon Demain and its sequel Apres Demain, and has spoken at TEDGlobal and three TEDx events (TEDxExeter, TEDxTotnes, and TEDxMadrid). An Ashoka Fellow, Hopkins also holds a doctorate degree from the University of Plymouth and has received two honorary doctorates from the University of the West of England and the University of Namur. He is a keen gardener, a founder of New Lion Brewery in Totnes, and a director of Totnes Community Development Society, the group behind Atmos Totnes, an ambitious, community-led development project.  He is the author of The Transition Handbook (2008), The Transition Companion (2011), and The Power of Just Doing Stuff (2013).  In his most recent book, From What Is to What If (2019), Rob Hopkins asks why true creative, positive thinking is in decline, asserts that it’s more important now than ever, and suggests ways our communities can revive and reclaim it. He blogs at transtionnetwork.org and robhopkins.net, and tweets at @robintransition. Rob has long been someone who can sense what is possible is the air, and put himself out on a limb to do it. When he was 12, Rob and a few other friends started a sit-in protest against the divisive policies at his school. Three hundred students joined and the school policies were later revised. At 14, Rob became a vegetarian. At 20, he moved to Istituto Lama Tsong Khapa, a Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Tuscany, Italy. Rob served there for two and a half years as the House Manager. He recounted being “deeply moved by the practice of daily meditation, and the community’s focus on compassion, letting go of greed and egotism, ... and embracing the value of both inner and outer transformation through skillful means”. After Tuscany, Rob spent a year traveling in India, Pakistan, China, Tibet and Hong Kong. In India, he met Emma, who later became his partner and mother of their four children. In Pakistan, he found “a garden of bliss” in Hunza village, where people led self-sufficient, contented, healthy lives. An Australian friend who was traveling with him mentioned the word “permaculture”, and one fortuitous event after another, Rob became a student, a practitioner and later a teacher of this art of designing for sustainable living.   In 1996, weary with the disconnection between theory and practice among Western practitioners of Buddhism, Rob and his young family moved to southwest Ireland, to West Cor, seeking to find “positive, practical and loving ways to help foster ‘an extraordinary renaissance— ‘economic, cultural, and spiritual’ throughout the industrialized world”. While setting up the first 2 year full-time permaculture course in the world, at Kinsale Further Education College, his and others’ families set up Baile Dulra Teoranta, a charity, with the intention of creating an ecovillage project called The Hollies on a farm near Castletown, Enniskeane. After close to 3 years, they were granted the first planning permission for an ecovillage development in Ireland. Being a vocal community organizer, Rob faced oppositions and setbacks throughout his life. In October 2004, Rob and Emma’s house was destroyed in an intentional fire. Rob continued to teach, helping his students to finalize the Kinsale Energy Descent Action Plan, which was later supported by the Kinsale Town Council. Rob was encouraged by this experiment to further step up in his ambition of “a massive-scale social transformation”, based on permaculture’s principles. Today I’m chatting with autism mom and diet expert, Crystal Jordan. Crystal shares her journey with her son, who is on the autism spectrum. Crystal explains how her sons sleep, skin and gastrointestinal issues became a real challenge in their lives. While they eventually did get an autism diagnosis, Crystal decided to also look into diet as a possible treatment for these issues. Using what she describes as a ‘modified paleo’ diet they were able to see significant improvement for her son in all these areas and more. Because of their success, Crystal decided to start ‘Foods Four Thought’, which is a great resource for all things diet, to help other families as well. I really appreciated Crystal’s honest take on diets and her advice on how to get started. I had a great time chatting with Crystal and I hope you enjoy listening! The Courage of Ambivalence

In an age of certainty, of assertions without facts, and sometimes assertions with facts, Mark O’Connell makes the case for a different virtue – ambivalence. Six years on from his thought-provoking, witty and charming Four Thought, he returns to make the case for ambivalence. In those six years almost every trend in public life has been away from ambivalence rather than towards it. Populist movements from the left and the right are about certainty, and even the idea of balance often ends up sharing single, entrenched views, just neatly arrayed on either side. Yet in real life few decisions are truly clear-cut, there is often a case on both sides, and a reasonable person could easily reach a different conclusion with the same evidence. Most of us, much of the time, have complex and mutually contradictory views on issues small and large. And that's also true in public life: the arts and business, politics and the military are all properly in the realm of ambivalence, with complicated, messy and marginal decisions. Mark begins this programme in Dublin, speaking to a philosopher, a psychologist, an essayist and an art critic about what ambivalence is, how central it is to the human experience, and how we might embrace it. Then he travels to London, to examine areas of public life, and issues, where ambivalence feels less comfortable, more challenging. But as someone who is profoundly ambivalent about most things, much of the time, can he sustain the courage of his own ambivalence? Producer: Giles Edwards

Hannah Walker Is a Highly Sensitive Person

Hannah Jane Walker argues that sensitivity is overlooked, dismissed and under-utilised, and argues that our society would be much better off if we embraced it instead. Two years ago, Hannah gave a Four Thought talk about sensitivity, and received hundreds of emails from strangers, reaching out to tell her the same things: that sensitivity in our society isn’t considered useful, and that, well, ‘that’s just the system that we live in, isn’t it?’ Since then, Hannah has felt slightly ashamed at having started such a powerful conversation without offering a solution. And so in this programme she sets out to do just that. She’ll be talking to several of her correspondents, as well as a psychologist, a neuroscientist, an economist and even a newly-minted activist for the highly sensitive. The programme focuses on highly sensitive people, but sensitivity is a spectrum and as Hannah hears more about it, she also finds out more about the benefits all of us can take from being in closer touch with our sensitive sides.
