This is the Catchup on 3 Things by The Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain.Today is the 8th of April and here are today's headlines.Nations are taking different stances toward US President Donald Trump's rising tariffs. China has vowed firm retaliation, rejecting Trump's threat of adding 50% more duties unless Beijing backs off its 34% counter-tariff. China's Commerce Ministry pledged strong countermeasures. Japan, in contrast, is opting for diplomacy, preparing to send a trade negotiation team to Washington. Trump confirmed speaking with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba about this move. The contrast highlights a global divide — between confrontation and cautious cooperation — in response to America's increasingly aggressive trade policies. In a landmark ruling, the Supreme Court declared Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi's decision to reserve 10 re-passed Bills for Presidential consideration as illegal. The court held that the Governor showed scant respect for judicial precedent and unduly delayed action. Using Article 142, the bench declared that the 10 Bills are deemed to have received assent, overriding the governor's withholding. This rare step sends a strong message about constitutional propriety and reinforces legislative autonomy amid growing tensions between elected governments and appointed constitutional heads.Pandemonium broke out in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly as NC members demanded discussion on the Waqf Act, which the Speaker had already dismissed through an adjournment motion. Tensions peaked when PDP legislator Waheed-ur-Rehman Para approached the Well of the House, insisting he had filed a fresh resolution. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary accused the Chair of silencing opposition voices. Para was marshalled out as disorder continued, highlighting growing friction in the Assembly and the sensitivity surrounding the Waqf Act debate in the politically tense region.Former Odisha CM and BJD chief Naveen Patnaik is facing internal dissent over the party's sudden U-turn on the controversial Waqf Amendment Bill. Despite long-standing opposition to the Bill, the BJD chose not to issue a voting whip, leaving the decision to individual MPs' conscience. The move triggered unrest within the party, reminiscent of a 2002 rebellion when six of its 10 Lok Sabha MPs challenged Patnaik's leadership. With the BJD lacking Lok Sabha representation but wielding influence in the Rajya Sabha, the shift has raised eyebrows.President Trump on Monday claimed the US and Iran are set for direct nuclear talks, but Tehran quickly clarified the dialogue would remain indirect. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed high-level indirect talks in Oman on Saturday, calling it both an “opportunity and a test.” His remarks came after Trump warned of severe consequences if the negotiations fail. Iran has previously rejected Trump's demand for direct talks under threat of bombing. The announcement revives fragile diplomatic hopes amid deep mistrust and escalating nuclear tension. That's all for today. This was the CatchUp on 3 Things by The Indian Express.

This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 9th of July and here are today's headlines.Worli Police today arrested Mihir Shah, son of CM Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena leader Rajesh Shah, who was absconding for three days after he allegedly mowed down a woman with his speeding BMW. The accused hit a 45-year-old victim in Worli while driving a BMW car around and was suspected to have consumed alcohol at Global Tapas Bar. The speeding BMW car owned by the Shinde Sena leader rammed into a two-wheeler on which she was travelling and dragged her on the bonnet for nearly two kilometres before flinging her on the road, in Mumbai on Sunday morning, police said.In light of the subdued showers, the India Meteorological Department has downgraded the red alert and now sounded a yellow alert in Mumbai which is slated to remain in place until tomorrow morning. The weather department has indicated that the city may witness heavy rainfall in isolated pockets today. While no warning has been issued in Mumbai till tomorrow, a yellow alert has been sounded again between Thursday and Saturday. In another indication that he intends to continue playing an active role in the BJD, party chief Naveen Patnaik has removed all state-level office-bearers of the BJD and got himself a first-ever ‘political secretary'. The removal of leaders across state units was done by Patnaik hours after he had attended the Rath Yatra in Puri. An order signed by the former chief minister said that the new officer-bearers will be appointed soon. The choice of the political secretary also sent a message, with Patnaik picking a former corporate executive who joined the BJD before the elections – and lost – Santrupt Misra.Describing Russia as a trusted ally and all-weather friend at a community event in Moscow this morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the opening of two new Indian consulates in the country — in Kazan and Yekaterinburg — to enhance travel and trade. On a two-day visit to Russia, PM Modi hailed President Vladimir Putin‘s leadership in strengthening the bilateral relationship over the past two decades during his address to the Indian diaspora. Meanwhile, Russia has broadly heeded to India's call to end the recruitment of Indians as support staff to the Russian military and ensure the return of those still operating in the force, according to top sources. As Modi met Putin in Moscow, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Tuesday expressed "huge disappointment", calling it a "devastating blow to peace efforts". Speaking about an attack on a children's hospital in the capital Kyiv, Zelenskyy wrote on X, quote, "It is a huge disappointment and a devastating blow to peace efforts to see the leader of the world's largest democracy hug the world's most bloody criminal in Moscow on such a day," Unquote. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 7th of June and here are the top stories of the week. The Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Party is set to return for a third term by winning 293 seats in the 18th Lok Sabha elections. However, the Bharatiya Janata Party suffered a major setback as it fell short of a majority – with 240 seats – on its own as it was heavily dependent on alliance partners such as the TDP and JD(U) to secure 272 seats required to form the government. The Opposition INDIA bloc combined by the Congress, the Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won a total of 232 seats. The Congress got back on its feet with 99 seats and the SP gave a stunning show by winning 37 seats from a mere 5 seats in Uttar Pradesh in 2019. The TMC won 29 seats in West Bengal while the DMK had leads in 22 seats. The Sharad Pawar-led NCP won 7 seats and the Shiv Sena of Uddhav Thackeray secured 9 seats. In Bihar, the RJD was ahead in 4 constituencies and the AAP and JMM in 3.In Odisha, the BJP is all set to form a majority government of its own for the first time, winning 78 out of 147 seats in the assembly elections of the coastal state. The outcome brings to an end the five-term reign of Naveen Patnaik's BJD, which managed to retain only 51 seats this time. Patnaik was eyeing to become the longest serving Chief Minister in India, but fell short by 76 days.Actor Kangana Ranaut, who recently won the Mandi Lok Sabha seat on a BJP ticket, was allegedly slapped by a woman constable of the CISF at the security area of Chandigarh airport. Afterwards, the CISF constable, Kulwinder Kaur, suggested her actions were linked to a statement Ranaut had made about women joining the farmers' protest. The CISF suspended the constable, initiated departmental inquiry, and lodged a police complaint against her. Ranaut, who was taking a Vistara flight to New Delhi and was accompanied by members of her family, said she will file a complaint with the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Chinese Foreign Ministry, which congratulated Narendra Modi, the BJP and NDA on their election victory, has protested the exchange of messages between Taiwan President Lai Ching-te and Modi on the poll outcome. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, responding to a question on the interaction between Modi and Lai, said there is no such thing as ‘president' of the Taiwan region and that China opposes all forms of official interactions between the Taiwan authorities and countries having diplomatic relations with China. She further stated that Taiwan is an inalienable part of the territory of the People's Republic of China. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.
First, Flora Swain is joined by Indian Express' Sujit Bisoyi and veteran journalist Sandeep Sahu to discuss BJP's very first victory in Odisha which broke the 24 year long streak of Naveen Patnaik and the BJD. They discuss at length why it happened and where VK Pandian stands in this whole situation. Next, Indian Express' Premankur Biswas speaks to political analyst Jayanta Ghoshal about Trinamool Congress' win in West Bengal despite the talks about it facing anti- incumbency. And the BJP losing ground in the state with its tally decreasing from 18 to 12 seats. Jayanta has been writing about the state for the last 40 years. (15:12)And in the end, we talk about China congratulating PM Modi on NDA's win in the Lok Sabha elections. China has said it wants to work on the bilateral relations between the two countries. This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 4th of June and here are today's headlines. With the NDA poised to form the government for a third consecutive time, bagging at least 290 seats, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a “historic feat”. As the INDIA bloc managed to halt the BJP's march towards majority, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi came out to hit out at the BJP, saying that the mandate today was a clear indication that the people of the country do not want to PM Modi and Amit Shah to run the country. The Opposition INDIA bloc has reversed all exit poll predictions, leading in at least 228 seats, according to the latest numbers. However, despite a stiff contest, the BJP-led NDA is inching closer towards the 300-mark, standing at 297 at the moment. In what is probably the biggest upset state-wise, the tug-of-war for Odisha between BJP and BJD ended today with the Bharatiya Janata Party set to form the next government. Though the ruling BJD party hels various rallies and election campaigns, the saffron party has crossed the majority mark of 74. Odisha CHief Minister Naveen Patnaik served for five consecutive terms, but now the lotus party will form its first cabinet in the coastal state. In a major setback for the BJP, Union minister Smriti Irani lost to the Congress's K L Sharma in Amethi, as Congress wrest back power. The Amethi win comes as a big boost to the Congress, with Rahul Gandhi losing the seat to Irani in 2019. In neighbouring Rae Bareli, a Congress party bastion for decades, Rahul defeated BJP candidate Dinesh Pratap Singh, who apologised to the people of Rae Bareli.Behind the remarkable turnaround for the Opposition Samajwadi Party and Congress in Uttar Pradesh where the INDIA bloc was leading, some fascinating factors may have given them an upper hand over the BJP. One of the factors that may have worked in favour of the SP, is its ticket-distribution strategy. Unlike previous elections, the SP ticket distribution focused on non-Yadav OBCs. Also, the SP changed candidates in several constituencies, depending on feedback from local cadre and local caste equation. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and its allies, the JanaSena Party (JSP) of Pawan Kalyan and BJP, are headed for a landslide in Andhra Pradesh, in what is a complete reversal of the 2019 results. This is quite a turnaround for the TDP-led alliance, which was almost written off months before the elections after its chief N Chandrababu Naidu's arrest. Jagan seemed to have lost focus on governance issues in trying to implement his nine welfare schemes, which he had promised during his padyatra ahead of the 2019 polls. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.
This is the Catch Up on 3 Things for the Indian Express and I'm Flora Swain. It's the 31st of May and here are the top stories of the week. After a three-month-long hectic campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kanyakumari on Thursday, to begin a 45-hour meditation retreat. For his visit, the PM chose the historically significant Dhyana Mandapam inside the Swami Vivekananda Memorial, situated on a rocky islet. Modi started his meditation with prayers at the renowned Sri Bhagavathi Amman Temple before boarding a special boat to the mid-sea Vivekananda Memorial. The National Capital on Wednesday witnessed light rains and thunderstorms amidst record breaking temperatures and a severe heatwave. On the same day, Mungeshpur in Northwest Delhi had recorded the highest-ever temperature in the city at 52.3 degrees Celsius. Delhi water minister Atishi announced that a Rs 2000 fine would be imposed on anyone found to be wasting water. This included washing cars with a hose, letting their water tanks overflow or using private connections for commercial activity. With the BJP turning up the heat on the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD over the growing influence of his aide and former bureaucrat V K Pandian, Patnaik on Thursday sought to make it clear that Pandian is not his “successor”, and speculation suggesting this is “an exaggeration”. On whether his party has a succession plan, Patnaik reiterated that the successor “will be decided by the people of the state. That is the natural result in these things”.Days after former Pakistani prime minister Nawaz Sharif admitted that Islamabad had violated the Lahore pact, India on Thursday said an objective view is emerging on the issue in the neighbouring country. Sharif on Tuesday said Islamabad had “violated” an agreement with India signed by him and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 1999, in an apparent reference to the Kargil misadventure by General Pervez Musharraf. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said quote, “You are aware of our position on the issue. I need not have to reiterate that. We note that there is an objective view emerging in Pakistan as well on this matter,” Unquote. On Sunday night, an Israeli air strike on an area designated for displaced Palestinians in Rafah, located in the southern Gaza Strip, resulted in the deaths of 45 people and injured 249 others. A social media campaign titled 'All eyes on Rafah' emerged after the loss of at least 37 lives on May 28, gaining significant attention. In response, Israel launched the campaign “Where were eyes on October 7th?” referencing the October 7 Hamas-led attacks that killed at least 1,200 people. This was the Catch-Up on the 3 Things by The Indian Express.

As of this afternoon, the Election Commission received about 1036 complaints from various political parties in West Bengal related to malfunctioning EVMs, agents being stopped from entering polling booths, and voters being threatened or stopped from going to cast their votes in different constituencies. Meanwhile, in addition to five Lok Sabha seats in Odisha, voters will also cast their ballot for the second phase of simultaneous state assembly elections in 35 seats today.Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said that he was hurt seeing the poverty in Odisha despite the state having “so many mineral resources”, and alleged that the Chief Minister's Office and residence had been captured by “a handful of corrupt people”. In an indirect dig at V K Pandian, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik's close aide and BJD's key election strategist who is from Tamil Nadu, Modi also claimed that people were saying the keys of the Puri Jagannath Temple's Ratna Bhandar (treasure trove) had been sent to the souther state. THis is his third visit to Odisha in a fortnight.Days after a Banaras Hindu University study reported long-term adverse events of “special interest” in a group of over 900 people a year after they were vaccinated with Bharat Biotech's Covaxin, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has called it a “poorly designed study” with critical flaws. The director-general of the apex medical research body has also written to the authors of the paper and the editor of the journal in which it was published, stating that it “incorrectly and misleadingly” acknowledges ICMR though the body did not offer any financial or technical support for the paper. The Enforcement Directorate has moved an application seeking an extension of Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal's judicial custody by 14 days in the money laundering case linked to the 'excise policy scam' after he surrenders on 2nd of June. Kejriwal is currently on interim bail till 1st of June after he was granted bail by the apex Court.Iran's President Ebrahim Raisi has been killed in a helicopter crash in the mountains to the northwest of the country, close to its borders with Armenia and Azerbaijan. The helicopter, which was also carrying Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and the Governor of Iran's East Azerbaijan province Malek Rahmati, disappeared in dense fog on Sunday. Money was sometimes tight in the household, and she knew that if she wanted to have dolls, this was the only way for her to get them. Sandra was always making things because that was the only way to have the dolls and other things she wanted, hence she made her first homemade cabbage patch doll, which wound up being featured in her High School play. After she got married and started a family, she became acquainted with reborn dolls; and then thought she might like to try sculpting. She started sculpting on her own and created a few reborn dolls, but realized she had an affinity for little dolls and decided to try her hand at creating ball jointed (articulated) dolls. Sandra started creating little BJD dolls, and while she was working on them, she started naming them little Punkins…and the Punkin Line was born.Although she created dolls in polymer clay, porcelain and other media, she's probably best known for her Punkin line of 7" resin ball-jointed dolls (BJDS)In 2020, she was Industry's Choice winner in the Dolls Awards of Excellence for her Punkin Pie entry, the first in her Punkin line. For more info about Sandra Maxwell and her adorable BJD dolls, please visit www.sandramaxwellstudios.comFor more information about the upcoming Professional Doll Makers Art Guild Online Convention October 14th-16th, please visit www.pdmagconvention.com#inthedollworld #sandramaxwellstudios #professionaldollmakers

After nearly two years, the much-awaited and long-overdue report by the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Data Protection Bill 2019 was tabled on Monday, 22 November. Though the report has not been made available in the public domain yet, as many as seven MP's from the Congress Trinamool Congress and the BJD have submitted dissent notes to the committee since some clauses give the Centre sweeping powers to collect and process data. While Congress MP Jairam Ramesh in his dissent note stated that the bill assumes that “constitutional right to privacy arises only where operations and activities of private companies are concerned”, TMC MPs Derek O'Brien and Mahua Moitra described the 2019 Bill as "Orwellian" in nature and raised questions on the functioning of the committee. Though the report reportedly has introduced a few positive provisions as well, including mandatory disclose if users' data has been passed on to a third party, the blank cheque of relaxations given to the Centre for collecting and using personal and non-personal data is a matter of grave concern. Head of the WAFarmers livestock section, Geoff Pearson, is calling on DPIRD, to reveal more detail about the location of properties, potentially affected by the cattle wasting disease Bovine Johne's. On the Country Hour yesterday the state's chief vet revealed BJD had been found on a cattle property in southern Western Australia and could now be on 400 or more WA farms. Up until now, WA has been trading on a BJD free status, but that looks likely to change, as eradication appears unlikely. Esperance based based vet Enoch Bergman believes bovine Johne's disease has been in WA for some time and it was only a matter of time until it was found.
Welcome to Episode 22 y’all! This week, Lucie learns to count (maybe), and we have more advice for men regarding bedroom activities they need to stop asking for, plus one they should probably just learn to deal with. Plus, listen to Lucie’s recap of Girls because during it she gets a surprise from the man she spent Valentine’s Day with! (It’s a lot less sexy than it sounds.) Then Erica reviews the classic romcom Bridget Jones’s Diary, and we discuss our feelings on Spanx, which we have a lot of (feelings, not Spanx). Erica also points out that while we both have terrible luck, at least our bare asses have never been on the news. Here at BMGB Podcast, we would never condone violence, but if it’s somebody gross like Hugh Grant in BJD, we might be on board. As always, subscribe, rate, and review!
https://www.inthedollworld.com/customizers.html Join us for a truly delightful interview with Lisa Jameson, aka Pepstar as she shares how being an avid doll collector, starting with Barbies, then evolving to the Tonner Fashion Dolls in the late 90's, began her doll repaint obsession. She soon discovered the ball joint dolls and how finding them she decided to switch over to them as they were resin and she enjoyed working with that medium over vinyl andhow all the dolls that she loves have all become wonderful canvases for her repainting and customizing skills for over 15 years. We also learn the story of how one of dolls was featured in a music video. How cool is that? Her skills are now applied to more BJD face ups that have created some exquisite and very realistic looking dolls, so much so that you forget you are looking at a doll.To learn more about Lisa and her dolls, visit her at:Website: www.pepstarsworld.comFacebook: facebook.com/pepstarInstagram: instagram.com/pepstarsworldThank you for listening to our show!To see our video interviews of some of our podcast, please visit and subscribe to our YouTube Channel at https://www.youtube.com/c/inthedollworldOur 1st Annual Black Dolls Celebration is still going strong with monthly Black Doll Giveaways so if you want TO WIN A DOLL...please visit our website and subscribe to our newsletter to be entered into our drawing at https://www.inthedollworld.com/subscribeFollow us at,- FB: https://www.facebook.com/inthedollworld-YOUTUBEhttps://www.youtube.com/c/inthedollworld

Hey y'all, Here's part three of our Bridget Jones's Diary extravaganza! At the end of this episode, you'll hear us say that our next episode is Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, but SIKE it's actually a BJD costumes episode. After that, though! Zombies! They're coming to get you, Barbara! Many thanks to the great Caroline Siede, our guest for this episode. We think it's one of our best, and that's no coincidence—it's because Caroline is very, very good at her job. Although India faces numerous challenges – a huge population, rising unemployment, growing environmental vulnerabilities – there is general agreement that, despite many odds, democracy has not only survived but is now firmly entrenched in the social and political fabric of the country. In recent months, however, the country has been rocked by nationwide protests following the enactment of the Citizen Amendment Act in December 2019. And then Covid struck. On the 24th of March, Prime Minister Modi announced that the country was going into a three-week lockdown. The sheer scale of this nationwide lockdown affecting 1.3 billion people, was unprecedented. In subsequently extending the lockdown beyond the initial 3 weeks, the Prime Minister noted: “India didn’t wait for the problem to escalate. Instead, as soon as the problem appeared, we tried to stop it by making swift decisions. I can’t imagine what the situation would have been had such quick decisions not been taken”.In the initial weeks and months, the lockdown appeared to be working well but once it was gradually lifted, there was a surge in Covid cases. And many within India remain worried that the country’s healthcare system may not be able to tackle a crisis of such magnitude. But there is also growing evidence of how India has radically stepped up its Covid-testing capacity. And last year, an ambitious new health insurance plan was launched – the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, which aims to provide free health coverage to large groups in the country, Joining me to discuss India’s Covid response, health insurance policies, center-state relations in the country’s federal set-up, the role of political parties in promoting development and reducing poverty, and much much more is Mr. Tathagata Sathpathy. Tathagata Satpathy served four terms as Member of Parliament, representing the Dhenkanal constituency of the state of Orissa (also known as Odisha). Until recently, he was a member of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) political party and was the party’s chief whip in the Lok Sabha – the lower house of the Indian parliament. In addition to being a politician, Mr. Satpathy is the owner and editor of the daily Odia newspaper, Dharitri, and the English daily, Orissa Post.
