DescriptionWhen it comes to speaking to Catholic audiences where does one BEGIN when preparing a talk? Where do you begin? I know too often I begin with: “have I given a talk on this topic before?” or “whats inspiring me lately?”. Again, nothing wrong with either of these, but are either of these the most important place to start? Well my guest today has some convictions around this question, and you've got to stick around to hear all about it. Kari and Mike start off today's episode with a little Advent chat and then speak with a contingent of young Catholics who recently returned from NCYC 2023, the National Catholic Youth Congress in Indianapolis. This year's four-day conference hosted 13,000 young people from across the country and featured breakout sessions, keynote speakers, Masses, time for confession, and camaraderie with their fellow young people. Joining us around the table are Millet LoCasale, Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry at Saint Katherine Drexel Parish in Egg Harbor Township and two young pilgrims, Sara LoCasale and Aerick Mallari; and Catalina Morales, Coordinator of Youth and Young Adult Ministry at Our Lady of Peace Parish in Williamstown and two of her young pilgrims Emily Hamilton and Luke Johnson. Our guests filled us in on what it was like to participate this year and what they took away from such a unique Catholic event. DescriptionWhat happens when you really stand back and let Jesus lead the way? Yes, in every aspect of your life - career, vocation, raising kids, etc.. But what if Catholic speakers, with great talent, opportunity and ambition don't follow this principle. I shudder to think, but then again I just have to look at my own life to see the results. Self-reliance is an idol that needs to be crushed in each our lives as disciples, and certainly foremost for those who come to serve the Lord through speaking, teaching and speaking. But I started off by asking ‘what if', what would it look like for a Catholic speaker to be dead serious about expecting, waiting, and trusting Jesus to take the lead? While no one does it perfectly, my guest today, Mari Pablo, shares with great humility and profound trust in God, her conviction the need to to step aside and allow Jesus to bring the opportunities, bear the fruit, and get the glory. Mari Pablo grew up in a devout, always supportive, boisterous Hispanic family in South Florida. She graduated from Franciscan University with a double major in theology and psychology; she also holds a Master of Theology from the Augustine Institute. She has worked in youth ministry for over 15 years, and is currently serving parishes and universities across the country with The Evangelical Catholic.Mari is a presenter in numerous projects for Ascension Press and is well known for her dynamic presentations at the annual Steubenville Youth Conferences, NCYC, NET, Life Teen events, FOCUS conference, diocesan events and more. Mari has a deep love for food but an even greater love for Christ and is dedicated to helping others encounter Him.Connect with Mari online at her website.LinksFor more information about the Better Preach Podcast visit: www.ryanohara.org/betterpreachBetter Preach Podcast is now on YouTube. Mike & a team of other alumni and students from the Catholic University of America recently ran a session at the National Catholic Youth Conference in Long Beach, CA. While there, we had a great conversation about the career, music, and spiritual journey of Justin Bieber and we got real deep into some stuff including: - Can you forgive but also set boundaries? - How can God be part of your friendships? Your romance? - How to come down gracefully from a spiritual high - What does a friendship/romance with God look like? - Porn addiction (it's not just for men) - Is there anything good about “Cancel Culture?” - Purpose . . . and more!Episode 56 Show Host: Mike Tenney Show Page: https://www.awakencatholic.org/pop-culture-catechism/justin-biebers-generation-live-from-ncyc Join my Patron Community www.PopCultureCatechism.com Listen wherever you find podcasts including: Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/pop-culture-catechism/id1530141366 Spotify Podcasts https://open.spotify.com/show/4hlSitS9FLX3sYqwr0RsFK?si=IObbssJPTWSwq9Qjn7VFaQ&fbclid=IwAR0aKkevoBgwo2CeJIpdeSnOHrE_h9vuHtKwffmOGHnYYl26XICYjllAzrU
Have you ever secretly (or not so secretly) wondered if you're doing this whole womanhood thing right? Are you tired of the secular rhetoric that tries to tell you how you should act and who you should be? And are you wondering what the church really teaches about Catholic femininity - but also a little worried about diving deeper into what the church says because you're afraid you won't measure up? In this episode, I sit down with Lisa Cotter. You may know her from talks that she's given at Steubenville, NCYC, or SEEK conferences. She's also the author of a brand new book, “Reveal the Gift: Living the Feminine Genius.” Obviously, we're going to be talking about the feminine genius in today's conversation, which is one of our mutual favorite topics. We're talking about what the feminine genius is, where the idea that there are “four main aspects” of the feminine genius came from and why it falls short when it comes to the beautifully diverse ways the feminine genius can be lived out, and how we can strive for human virtues in a particularly feminine way. If there was a video of this podcast episode, you'd mainly just see me nodding along and mouthing YES for thirty minutes while I listened to Lisa's thoughts on Catholic femininity, and I'm so excited to share this conversation with you. If you're ready to explore what it means to be an authentic woman and discover how to be an authentic women, sister, this letter is for you. Topics we talked about in this episode: Lisa's story as a Catholic woman and how she does not do it all as a wife and mom What inspired Lisa's new book, “Reveal the Gift: Living the Feminine Genius” Our mutual frustration at Saint Pope John Paul II's lack of definition of the feminine genius, and a definition from Sister Prudence Allen that helps us understand what the feminine genius is Why “the four aspects of the feminine genius” falls short of what the feminine genius truly is How we live out human virtues particularly as women with a feminine genius Women's capacity for fidelity Where we can draw inner strength from as women (especially in challenging seasons!) How Lisa lives out the feminine genius by being receptive to grace Resources you should check out after listening to this episode: Reveal the Gift: Living the Feminine Genius by Lisa Cotter The Eternal Woman by Gertrud Von Le Fort How to Be a Spiritual Mother (Whether You Have Kids or Not)—an article I wrote back in 2018 for Aleteia that discusses the beauty of spiritual motherhood Follow Lisa on Instagram and her website, Made to Magnify Naptime Notes, a new monthly newsletter from Chloe Order my newest book, Sisterhood: Giving and Receiving the Gift of Friendship Check out The Little Catholic Box and access the exclusive bonuses for LTW listeners
Kristyn Russell is joined by college students, Hannah (The College of Wooster), John (Calvin University), and Collin (University of Michigan) for a synod listening session. All three young adults were active participants in youth ministry at Blessed Sacrament. They attended NCYC, participated on the Outreach Team, and were members of the Youth 2 Youth retreat team. Collin mentions a video that he did for the Diocese of Saginaw. You can find that here. Hannah was a guest on the podcast back in December. If you missed her episode, you can find it here.

Parish and school communities throughout the country are in the process of sending out their young people. No, I don’t mean Confirmation rites or graduation rituals. I’m talking about the young people who will be attending any one of a variety of summer camps, programs, and institutes. There is no shortage of opportunities for young people to attend formational programs with their peers. As someone who helps direct such a program, most of the questions I receive have to do with, “how can I get youth from my parish to go?” Finding youth to attend, however, is only part of the battle. Once a young person has experienced the One Call Institute, One Bread One Cup, NCYC, or any of the other national and regional programs that exist, what do we do with them now? We sent them, now do we welcome them back? Most importantly, how do we utilize and continue to develop their gifts, talents, and interest? So, today, we’re exploring strategies, tips, and approaches that can help your community better utilize the experiences and formation of the young people in your community. To help us out, we’ll hear Zack Stachowski, co-director of the One Call Institute. We’ll also hear one of Zack’s compositions in this week’s “Ministry Moment.”
This week we chat with Molly Herrera who is the Coordinator of Youth Ministry and Young Adult Faith Formation St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Gaithersburg MD. Molly started out as a youth group kid (including going to NCYC with her parish as a teen) and now works in full time ministry. She talks about how her experience as a member of a youth group as a teen has impacted the way she does ministry today.

Also discussed: tips on how to safely drive and eat at the same time.
My reflection on the National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC). Over all I can bear witness to the hope given by this event. I know I am going forward as a better priest because of this event. What gives beer its taste? Why do some ales taste of berries, bananas or chocolate? A big part of the answer is the type of yeast used to ferment it. There are hundreds of different strains that brewers can use to make beer, and many of them can be found at the National Collection of Yeast Cultures in Norwich. We went for a pint with scientists from the NCYC to find out how different yeasts affect the taste of ales, and learn about their research to find strains that can produce new and better beers. Episode 17: Our plant for this episode is not a plant. It's yeast. Tiny in size, huge in utility, yeast is all around us. Found in the Ecuadorian Rainforests, the Arctic, and on our skin, this single-celled member of the Fungi Kingdom is part of Nature's Recycling Team and has been on the planet for millions of years. Used for brewing and baking, humans have enjoyed a long and fruitful relationship with yeast. In this episode, Dr. Ian Roberts of the National Collection of Yeast Cultures (NCYC) talks about yeast: its history, what it needs to survive, its role in the ecosystem, and the process of fermentation. Dr. Roberts is the curator of more than 4,000 strains of yeast collected over 65 years at the NCYC. To learn more about the NCYC and its heritage collection of UK brewing yeast visit their website.
