DescriptionWe love to overcomplicate things. Let me restate that. I love to over complicate things. More of a really good thing - like preaching the Gospel - has to be better right?!? Not always. In my conversation today with Pete Burds he shares how his approach to giving Catholic talks has shifted and developed over the years. And what he chooses to prioritize in a 30 min talk might surprise you. It did me. And I'm the better for it! And ironically, my first title for this podcast was super complicated - my longest one ever. And then I thought, I'm doing it again, so I actually put Pete's advice into practice. You're welcome! Ever since encountering Jesus Christ through a high school youth ministry program, Pete Burds has used his five loaves and two fish for the sake of building the kingdom. Through storytelling, leading retreats, and years of experience in youth and young adult ministry, he has proclaimed the freedom found in Jesus Christ to thousands. Pete currently serves as the Vice President of Mission for NET Ministries. DescriptionI can't tell you how many things I've learned how to do by watching video tutorials on YouTube, just for this podcast alone..but it doesn't stop there - plumbing, drywall, auto repair - you name it! YouTube is incredible because any one of these ‘how to' videos combine all three styles of learning. You can see and hear and learn exactly the steps you need to take to find a broken piece of glass that might be causing your dishwasher to not drain all the way.. And one of my favorite models of how to deliver great Catholic talks comes from a video library too! YDisciple. And in my fascinating conversation with their National Director, Annie Grandell, we dig into a wide range of topics and then land on what I'd call the seven marks of a great Catholic talk. After serving with NET Ministries and graduating from the University of St Thomas with a degree in Catholic Studies, Annie Grandell served as a Parish Youth Minister, for over a decade, for a cluster of 3 parishes in the greater Twin Cities metro area. With a heart for reaching souls with the gospel and teaching the truth of the Catholic faith, she continues to serve the Church as the Director of Y Disciple, a national Catholic leader in training adults to lead small groups of young people that make disciples. + Here's the link to YDisciple where Annie serves as Director.LinksFor more information about the Better Preach Podcast visit: www.ryanohara.org/betterpreachBetter Preach Podcast is now on YouTube. Anna Carter and Shannon Ochoa lead Eden Invitation, a Catholic Side B ministry for LGBTQ+ discipleship. TJ and David talked with them about their founding story, mystical theology, Pride Month, the opportunity and challenges of giant gray areas, theories of change, and so much more. We love how intensely they pursue loving God and loving their communities well. Please join us for this delightful conversation. (And yes, the retreat they mention has already happened—but there's always next year!) About Our Guests: As culture shifts, Eden Invitation believes the Church must be there to meet it. We are striving disciples with LGBTQ+ experiences, building community with others who desire a way of life in congruence with Christ and His Church. Through in-person events and online community, Eden Invitation creates space to receive the whole person, grow systems of mutual support, and empower for creative discipleship. Anna Carter is the co-founder and President of Eden Invitation. Anna's tenacious faith in Jesus predated her own experience of same-sex desires. Her passion for catechesis and evangelization brought her to the Franciscan University of Steubenville, NET Ministries, and the high school classroom. Now through directing the work of Eden Invitation, Anna proclaims that there is resurrected life in the midst of our longings. Anna wanted to found Eden Invitation in order to ensure there was a just pastoral response and to give light to what a “yes” to the Church's teachings can look like. Shannon Ochoa is the co-founder and Vice-President of Eden Invitation. Shannon graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with degrees in Social Welfare and Gender & Women's Studies. She has fallen for men and for women, but ultimately she fell for the beauty of Christ and His Church. Prior to founding Eden Invitation, Shannon worked in college campus ministry with The Evangelical Catholic and Brew City Catholic. She felt compelled to co-found Eden Invitation because she wanted disciples to know they were good, to not be afraid of themselves, and to find dynamic, faithful community. If you're looking for her, try the shore of the nearest body of water. “Man cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself.”~ St. John Paul IIIt sounds so simple: do good things that make me healthy, happy, & holy and avoid the things that stop me from thriving. But so often we feel like St. Paul: "For I do not do the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want" (Romans 7:19). As we discussed last week on Practicing Catholic, the need to support our young people in their faith journeys is ever-so-important in our changing world. NET Ministries – which stands for National Evangelization Teams - has been helping young people evangelize their peers for the past 40 years; utilizing retreat teams, discipleship teams, and YDisciple - a small group discipleship resource – to help our youth walk with one another in Christ. We had the honor this past weekend of speaking with Dave Rinaldi, the unanimously-voted upon new President of NET Ministries! We learned a bit about the man behind the ministry, some NET offerings happening within our own Archdiocese, and how we might further support our youth.

DescriptionWhen I set out to do this podcast, one of the questions I was really eager to answer was: How do the strongest communicators PRACTICE their talks? And honestly except for a few different ideas here and there - it seems like people mostly don't practice talks from start to finish. And there are a lot of reasons for that - they often give the same talk over and over, they practice particular bits of their talks, they practice the opener and closer, but improvise a bit more based on a structure in between. But in my conversation with Dave Rinaldi today, I got the first really satisfying and challenging answer to this question. He has a very particular approach that will, I think, challenge and surprise you. We get into towards the end, so buckle up! We're going for a fun ride together. David Rinaldi is the Vice President of Mission for NET Ministries. He trains and equips NET's missionaries to bring the Gospel to 100,000 people each year. David has 20 years of ministry experience with youth and young adults and has given over 1,500 presentations to a variety of audiences and has never been run out of town. Yet. "If this is not my calling, how can I still take those things that I've learned and the things I still love, and how can I use those things now?" With a background in media studies and theology, Julia Strukely has found a variety of ways to put her degree and faith into action. As she followed the promptings of God in her life, she found herself leading retreats, serving with NET Ministries, working as a youth minister, and even discerned a religious vocation. Even though she ultimately discerned out of religious life, Julia saw that her time discerning was just the beginning to a deepening of her personal mission. Now, she teaches religion, journalism and media literacy to middle schoolers and continues to evangelize with and through the media - all because she continued to say yes. In this episode, Julia and I talk about her love for media, her time discerning a religious vocation and how that formed her, and how she continues to evangelize now as a speaker and podcaster. Here are the show notes for this week's episode. You can follow Julia on Instagram @sevenmilechats and on Twitter @MsStrukely1.Please be sure to tune into Julia's podcast, Seven Mile Chats! His Excellency, the Most Reverend Andrew H. Cozzens, Auxiliary Bishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota joins Dr. Mary Anne Urlakis on Episode 19 of WCAT Radio’s “Vows, Vocations, and Promises: Discerning the Call of Love.” Bishop Cozzens is a native of Denver, and a graduate of Benedictine College in Kansas. While discerning a priestly vocation, he served as a traveling missionary with the Twin-Cities based NET Ministries, subsequently joined the Companions of Christ in St. Paul in 1992. After completing four years of study at the Seminary of St. Paul, he was ordained to the priesthood in 1997. After serving as the Parochial Vicar at the Cathedral of St. Paul, he was sent to the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome where he completed a doctoral dissertation which focused on the manner in which the priest is called to be the living image of Jesus Christ the Bridegroom of the Church. Bishop Cozzens was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis on Oct 11, 2013, and His Ordination to the Episcopacy took place on Dec 9, 2013- the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. In 2019, he was elected to a 3-year term as the Chairman of the USCCB Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis- a role which began in November 2020.His Excellency has worked extensively in priestly formation, including his work on the USCCB Working Group for the Program of Priestly Formation the (PPF6) based on the new Ratio Fundamentalis. Bishop Cozzens serves as the Board President of the Seminary Formation Council, and His Excellency is also the Board President for the Institute for Priestly Formation.Bishop Cozzens and Bishop Felipe Estevez are the Co-Editors of the text: Priestly Husbands: Priestly Fathers: Seminary Formation for the 21st Century. As such he brings a wealth of insight and experience to this unique book project. The text brings together in one volume a dynamic collection of essays, documents, and tools for those who work in the area of seminary formation. The goal of this comprehensive book is to provide a spiritual and psychological resource that engenders affective maturity and fruitful celibate chastity for a renewal of priestly formation, an aim which echoes the objectives expressed by the Church in the 2016 Ratio Fundamentalis and the 6th edition of the Program for Priestly Formation. The text has been hailed by bishops and formators as an essential guide which provides concrete tools that assist formation by taking into account the spiritual and humans needs of the candidates, while helping them determine whether those same candidates are capable of the self-gift required by priestly celibacy. In this interview, Bishop Cozzens discusses with Mary Anne Urlakis both his role in the development of the book as well as his own personal contribution- Chapter 10, entitled: “The Essential Role of Mentor-Formation Advisor.” Spiritual Husbands-Spiritual Fathers: Priestly Formation for the 21st Century is published by Enroute Books and Media and can be purchased at https://enroutebooksandmedia.com/spiritualhusbands/, as well as on Amazon.com.

"Regardless of my vocation, I'll always be called to encounter people and help them encounter Jesus." Emma Wong definitely considered serving with NET Ministries at one point in her life, but it wasn't until she gave her yes that she realized the magnitude of it. She spent an entire year in Australia, serving the youth of the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney. Now that she's back in town, she is a youth minister at St. Patrick's Parish in Maple Ridge. This week Mike and Pete are joined by four fantastic Catholic young adults from NET Ministries - Christian Peres, Cecilia Peyton, Joe Bartley, and Casey Buenzli. The group talks about about the retreats they have been offering throughout the northeast United States, most recently in the Diocese of Camden. NET Ministries challenges young Catholics to love Christ and embrace the life of the Church. Every August, 175 young Catholics aged 18-28 leave behind their jobs, school, family, and friends to devote nine months to serving with the National Evangelization Teams (NET). Divided into 16 teams, they travel across the U.S. for nine months to share the Gospel with young people and their families. Our chat with these young people is fantastic, only derailed once by the podcast’s longest and angriest digression ever (32:12 mark), an attempt to inform our midwestern guests where to get their first cheesesteak - Pat’s/Geno’s/Jim’s/Steve’s (the classic’s suggested by Mike) versus Donkey’s (the avant-garde suggested by Pete).
