Join Ocean House owner and author Deborah Goodrich Royce for a conversation with author Patricia Chadwick about her new book, Breaking Glass. About Patricia Chadwick: Patricia Walsh Chadwick was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1948. She received her BA in Economics from Boston University and had a thirty-year career in the investment business, culminating as a Global Partner at Invesco. Today she sits on a number of corporate boards, and she blogs on issues social, economic, and political. She also mentors middle school girls at Our Lady Queen of Angels School in Harlem. In 2016, she founded and is the CEO of Anchor Health Initiative, a health care company that serves the needs of the LGBTQ community in Connecticut. She is married and lives in Connecticut with her husband. They have a daughter and a son. About Breaking Glass: Kicked out of a cult at seventeen, Patricia Walsh Chadwick started on the bottom rung of the ladder in the world of business and worked her way to the top—breaking through the glass ceiling to become a global partner at Invesco. Patricia grew up in a religious community-turned-cult in the Boston area. At the age of seventeen, she was forced out of her home, leaving behind her entire family, and without access to higher education. From her first job as a receptionist at a brokerage firm, she clawed her way up the ladder—rung by rung—in that bastion of male chauvinism: Wall Street. By going to college at night, she achieved her degree in economics from Boston University, and from there, she headed to New York City. With a drive that earned her the moniker “Witch of Wall Street,” she rose from the ranks of research analyst to portfolio manager, where she was responsible for billions of dollars in pension and endowment assets. A turning point in her life was giving birth to twins at the age of forty-five, and she continued forward in her career, becoming a global partner at Invesco. At the turn of the millennium, she left Wall Street behind and embarked on a second career as a corporate board director. For more information about Patricia Chadwick, visit patriciachadwick.com. First Glorious Mystery: The Resurrection."But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices which they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel; and as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, 'Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen"' (Lk 24:1-5). Our Father, 10 Hail Marys (contemplating the mystery), Glory be to the Father. Second Glorious Mystery: The Ascension."So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God" (Mk 16:19).Our Father, 10 Hail Marys (contemplating the mystery), Glory be to the Father. Third Glorious Mystery: The descent of the Holy Spirit."When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance" (Acts 2:1-4).Our Father, 10 Hail Marys (contemplating the mystery), Glory be to the Father. Fourth Glorious Mystery: The Assumption."Henceforth all generations will call me blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me" (Lk 1:48-49).Our Father, 10 Hail Marys (contemplating the mystery), Glory be to the Father. Fifth Glorious Mystery: The crowning of Our Lady Queen of Heaven."And a great portent appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars" (Rev 12:1 ).Our Father, 10 Hail Marys (contemplating the mystery), Glory be to the Father.

Hello family!Happy Feast Day of Our Lady of the Rosary!  This is day 54 of our 54-day Rosary Novena.Every year on October 7th, The Catholic Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, formerly known as Feast of Our Lady of Victory. Pope Pius the V, Established this feast in 1573 to thank God for a Christian military victory over the Turks- a victory attributed to the praying of the Rosary. The way we pray the rosary has developed over time. According to franciscanmedia.org. The Initial practice was to pray for 150 Our Fathers to imitate the 150 Psalms. Then there was a parallel practice of Praying 150 Hail Marys. In the 16th Century, the Rosary was developed to include 15 Mysteries of the life of Jesus; 5 Joyful, 5 Sorrowful, and 5 Glorious. In 2002, Pope John Paul II added the 5 Luminous Mysteries to the Rosary. The purpose of the Rosay is to help us meditate on the mysteries of our salvation: the birth of Jesus, His Life, death, and resurrection. The 54-Day Rosary Novena Originated In the Late 19th, Century when Mary made an apparition to a Young girl, Agrelli of Naples, Italy. Our Lady Queen of the Most Holy Rosary specified that whoever desired to obtain favors from her should make three novenas of the prayers of the Rosary in the petition, and three novenas in thanksgiving. On our website, you can read a bit more about the History of the 54-Day Rosary Novena.Today on the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, I share with you the joy of completing our 54-Day Rosary Novena. I Pray that through the intercession of Mary, your petitions are granted if it is God's Holy Will.We have completed our 54-day Rosary Novena, but I encourage you to continue praying the rosary daily.  The Rosary is a beautiful prayer that we can use to draw closer to Jesus and Mary by Meditating on the great mysteries of our Salvation. God willing, our next 54-Day Rosary Novena will start on February 15 and end on April 9th.  A beautiful way to prepare our hearts for Easter Sunday 2023. The Novena will be published in English and Spanish. Family, If you would like to support our ministry, Please continue to share the links to our podcast and website with your friends and family. To give you a quick update, we have prayed over 278,000 Raosaries since August 2020. With your help, we have created a beautiful family dedicated to prayer. Helen Lewis was raised a Catholic, but is now an atheist - and has also spent the last ten years writing about feminism. Recently, she was asked if she thought feminism had replaced religion in her life. It's a timely question, since the British Social Attitudes Survey says that the decline of religious belief is “one of the most important trends in post-war history”. But have we really become less religious? Or has our hunger for truth and meaning simply transferred itself to social justice politics? In this programme, Helen Lewis considers the religious overtones of the “culture wars”. On both left and right, she finds unquestionable doctrines, charismatic preachers, blasphemy and heresy - and the promise of salvation. Talking to religious leaders, atheists, and voices from across the social and political spectrum, Helen considers the parallels - both good and bad - between traditional religion and modern social justice movements. Helen is also on the hunt for some answers. Can we take the religious fervour out of politics? Or — and this is hard for an atheist like Helen to accept — should we encourage a revival of traditional faiths to fulfil our spiritual impulses? July 1: Saint Junipero Serra, Priest 1713–1784Memorial; Liturgical Color: WhitePatron Saint of California and vocations“Always forward!” was his motto and his lifeThe United States of America's impressive Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., includes the majestic, semicircular Statuary Hall. Each of the fifty states chooses two citizens of historic importance to represent it in the Hall. Statues of one nun and four Catholic priests, two of them saints, grace Statuary Hall, including today's saint. Junipero Serra was the founder of California. He was the pathbreaking, indestructible priest who trekked California's mountains, valleys, deserts, and shores to found nine of its eventual twenty-one missions. California's rugged cattle culture, its luxurious orchards and rolling vineyards, its distinctive Mission architecture, and its blending of Mexican and Native American heritage are the legacy of Father Serra and his Franciscan confreres. The Franciscan city names tell the story: San Francisco, Ventura (Saint Bonaventure), San Luis Obispo, Santa Clara, Our Lady Queen of the Angels (Los Angeles) and on and on. The Franciscans simply made California what it is.Father Junipero Serra was baptized as Michael Joseph on Mallorca, an island in the Mediterranean off the coast of Spain. He grew up dirt poor and devoutly Catholic. He joined the Franciscans as a youth and moved to the large city of Palma de Mallorca, where he took the religious name of Junipero in honor of one of Saint Francis of Assisi's first followers. After priestly ordination, Father Junipero obtained a doctorate in philosophy and taught Franciscan seminarians. He was destined to lead a successful life as an intelligent, holy, and pious intellectual. But in the Spring of 1749, he felt the Lord calling him to become a missionary to New Spain (Mexico). On the fateful day of his departure from his large Franciscan monastery, he kissed the feet of all his brother Franciscans, from the oldest to the youngest. He then boarded a ship and sailed away from his native island for the first time and the last time. He would never see his family again. Our saint's life began in earnest in middle age. Long years of intellectual, spiritual, and ascetic preparation steeled his body, mind, and will for the rigors to come.Arriving in the port of Veracruz, Father Serra walked hundreds of miles to Mexico City rather than travel on horseback. Along this first of many treks, he was bitten by either a snake or a spider and developed an open wound that never healed, causing him near constant pain for the rest of his life. Father Serra spent the first several years of his missionary life in a mountainous region of Central Mexico among an indigenous population that had encountered Spaniards, and the Catholic religion, two centuries before. Father Serra wanted a rawer missionary experience. He wanted to meet and convert pagans who knew nothing of Christianity. After years of faithful service as a missionary, church builder, preacher, and teacher in Central Mexico, Father Junipero finally had his chance. The Franciscans were tasked with leading the religious dimension of the first great Spanish expedition into Alta California, the present day American state. If Father Serra had never gone to California, he may still have been a saint, but one known to God alone. It was the challenge of California that made Father Junipero into Saint Junipero.Already in his mid-fifties, Father Serra was the head priest of a large migration of men, women, soldiers, cattle, and provisions whose goal was to establish Spanish Catholic settlements in California. Integral to this cultural and evangelical effort was the founding of California's missions, the vast farms, cattle ranches, churches, communities, and schools that have left such an enduring mark on California. For the last fifteen years of his life, Saint Junipero was seemingly everywhere in California—walking, confirming, working, building, preaching, fasting, planning, sailing, writing, arguing, founding, and praying. He exhausted his poor, emaciated body. He was recognized by all as the indispensable man. Father Junipero died quietly at the San Carlos Mission in Carmel just as the United States was becoming a country on the other side of the continent. He did for the West Coast what George Washington and better known founders did for the East Coast. He founded a society, in all of its complexity. Decades later, Americans migrated to far-off California, newly incorporated into the federal union, looking for gold, and were surprised to discover a distinctive culture as rugged, layered, and rich as the one they had left behind.California's foundational events were distinctly Catholic just as the Eastern colonies' were distinctly Protestant. When ceremoniously inaugurating an early mission, Father Junipero said a High Mass, sang Gregorian chant, processed with an image of the Virgin Mary, and had the Spanish galleons offshore fire their cannons at the consecration. What powerful solemnity! The roots of large regions of the United States run deep into Southern, not Northern, soil, and were watered by the Catholic faith, not dissenting Protestantism. The United States was baptized Catholic but raised Protestant. Father Junipero represents the best of that “other” founding of the United States of America.Saint Junipero Serra, inspire us to follow your example of physical perseverance, doctrinal commitment, and spiritual discipline for the good of the Church. You were a model priest, missionary, and Franciscan. May we, too, be great in all that we do.

St Patrick's Boys National School Announced 2022 Analog Devices Primary School Robotics Champions. Over 75 primary school children went to battle with their self-designed sumo wrestling robots at the 7th annual Analog Devices Primary School Robotics Competition. Students from St Patrick's Boys National School have crowned the 2022 Analog Devices Primary School Robotics Champions at the STEM-inspired challenge which took place in Limerick this weekend. Teams of 10 to 12-year-olds from 24 schools across Limerick City and County gathered in Analog Devices Campus in Raheen, Limerick early on Saturday morning to build and program their own robots before entering the ring and pitting their robotic creations against each other, sumo-style, that afternoon. Over 100 supporters cheered on the children during the highly competitive finale which awarded points for teamwork as well as design and innovation. Fionn Ott, Bruno Ulej and Odhran Yanto from St Patrick's National School, Dublin Road, Limerick won the overall competition and Kristiana Suares, Ellie Mai O'Dell and Óran Conlon from Thomond Primary School were runners up. The aim of the hugely popular event is to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) amongst primary school students by giving them a flavour of engineering through the opportunity to design, build, test and program their own robots. The children are encouraged to work as part of a team, express creativity, problem solve and have fun whilst at the same time learning key STEM principles. Announcing the winners, Jim Nagle, Senior Director – Manufacturing, Analog Devices, said, “It was wonderful to witness the teamwork, creativity, energy and excitement amongst our young competitors. Our aim is to provide a fun and engaging hands-on learning experience that will encourage children to stay curious and enthusiastic about STEM subjects and the opportunities ahead. Everyone certainly seemed to have fun today.” Ann O'Sullivan, Director – Process Development & Resilience, Analog Devices added, “The school's robotics program is very important to us at Analog Devices. From feedback, we know it provides engagement on a level some schools may not have the means to access. This early experience of robotics design captures the imaginations of so many students. They are simultaneously getting an appreciation of STEM principles and problem-solving as well as a taste of the exciting challenges that a career in engineering could offer.” Now in its seventh year, more than 4,900 students across Limerick city and country have participated in the Analog Devices Primary School Robotics Competition. The first stage of the competition started months in advance when Analog Devices opened registration to all primary schools with more than 120 pupils in the Limerick city/county region. Each school that registered received a free Robotics workshop where 5th and 6th class students learn to build and program a robot using Lego WeDo kits. After building their robot in the classroom, each team competed against each other for the chance to represent their school in the Analog Devices Primary Schools Robotics Final Competition. Finals day began with a more advanced robotics workshop to further develop and build on their learnings from the first round of classroom-based workshops. A new robot challenge was set which tasked the students to design and program a robot for sumo wrestling. In the afternoon, each team played a series of matches in the pool stages with the top teams going forward to the tense and exciting play-offs where the final points were allocated. At the end of the showdown, the team with the highest points was crowned the overall winner. Previous winners include Scoil Ide (2015), St Patrick's Girls NS (2016), Our Lady Queen of Peace NS (2017), Killoughteen NS (2018), Scoil Mhuire Broadford (2019) and St Patricks N.S Bruree (2020). Today's podcast is devoted to sharing Our Lady's weekly messages to the parish of Medjugorje from July through Christmas Day of 1986. These apparitions and messages are 100% approved by the magisterium of the Catholic Church. Our Lady Queen of Peace has been appearing on earth since 1981 to visionaries from the little town of Medjugorje, Bosnia-Hercegovina. This podcast gives a brief overview of how this started and offers resources you can use to delve more deeply into this great and powerful gift God has given to the world. The gift of Medjugorje is, first of all, a great display of our Blessed Mother's love for all humanity. She as been visiting the earth tirelessly for 40 years to lead us out of darkness into the wonderful light of Her Son. He who became Incarnate in Her as the Word of God Made Flesh is permitting Her to come to us, to undertake by the power of the divine love flowing through her Immaculate Heart the visitation of Her children like never before in human history. Have we not been very lazy and weak in our response to this great gift? Let's change that! Now is Her time to crush--with Her Son--the head of the ancient serpent. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lisa9722/support

UBM Unleavened Bread Ministries

Delivered from Captivity (6) (Audio) David Eells - 7/19/20 I reported to you and the President almost three years ago that the Anarchists, Antifa, BLM, Muslim terrorists, and Communists would burn Churches and attack Christians and especially the leadership. We were told by the Lord this would be HIS punishment to bring His Church to repentance and bring it back to the Bible covenant. We pointed out how Babylon used     fire and pestilence to conquer the apostate people of God. “The things that have been are the things that shall be”. However Satan and his helpers have plans to go further than God’s will and to overthrow our republic and bring in Communism to destroy Christianity. Obama and Hillary and their elite bosses sought to do this before the tribulation and God sent Cyrus to stop them.  The job is not finished. God said, “You have not because you ask not”. So to finish the job you must pray in faith and do spiritual warfare, saints. Esther stood up to Haman, the factious murderer, and got the ear of the King of Kings and all was turned around.  If you are a member of the Bride body you will do the same. Please find a fast that fits your situation and pray and do warfare. No one else but true believers can do this. Luk 10:19  Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall in any wise hurt you. My Email to the President 7/18/20 Mr President Trump,   I believe you know their plan. The UN, the DS, the elite, China and the anarchists who are burning churches as the Lord told us almost 3 years ago and I told you, will start a shooting and burning war and will target Christians.  When they have caused enough carnage they will call in their ally, the UN and they will all be against us to overthrow our republic. And As I said the DS has made and tested a new far more deadly plague to blame on you and the Christians. The end result will be that the Christians will be chastened for departing from the New Covenant and there will come revival. Because of our prayers to Almighty God you and the patriots will conquer these leftist Communists.  I pray you redistribute the wealth of the wicked before this gets bad. Pray to Jesus and fear not.  You will win. Fairfax County police said they were alerted to an alleged stabbing at the church at around 3pm on Saturday afternoon. The attacker is said to have charged at the church's pastor, who was reportedly conducting a bible study group at the time. Police said that Fairfax County Police Chief Edwin C. Roessler, who was present at the event, intervened, helping to subdue the suspect. Local media reported that Roessler was among those who were hurt as a result of the incident. The Washington Post reported, citing police, that the chief escaped relatively unscathed, without suffering any stab wounds, but was "scratched and perhaps bitten.”The motive behind the stabbing is so far unknown. Senior pastor of the church, Brett Fuller, also serves as a chaplain to the Washington Redskins. The team recently announced that it would retire its logo and change its name after coming under heightened scrutiny amid mounting racial tensions gripping the US.  Christian sites across the country have been increasingly targeted, mostly in vandalism attacks, since the Black Lives Matter protests sprang up in late May. The movement, which began as a peaceful protest against police brutality, has seen activists toppling monuments of historical figures, ranging from Confederate generals to former US presidents. Last Wednesday, a Catholic church in Connecticut was defaced with anarchist and satanic symbols, while the day prior a statue of Jesus was found decapitated in the courtyard of a Catholic church in Florida, in what the Archdiocese of Miami said was mostly likely a “hate crime.” While the Black Lives Matter movement has mostly been focused on tearing down statues of figures who in some way contributed to slavery, some radical elements within the group, such as racial activist Shaun King, has argued that murals, statues and other depictions of Jesus as a white European should be done away with as well. you White Mother Killed By Black Lives Matter Mob for Allegedly Saying  'All Lives Matter', National Media Fully Ignores https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2020/07/young-white-mother-killed-black-lives-matter-mob-allegedly-saying-lives-matter-national-media-fully-ignores/  De Blasio's New York: Violent Thug Assaults Female with a Child in a Stroller Before Stabbing Her Multiple Times (VIDEO) Prepare for a second Plague not like the first.  I told you that Covid 19 did not fulfill all that the Lord told us three years ago that He would do with the plague to bring down the factions and apostates and that I expected more plague. The dream changed and I was still in the same condo at a small medical facility where people were dropping like flies from some unknown pathogen or contagion. There were three women and two men who were so sick they were unable to function. I tried to grabbed the one woman closest to me while she was falling. In the dream I knew the elite were experimenting with the next Plandemic. I said ma’am ma’am what’s wrong get up ? Again and again, but she was dead.  I went over to the nurse who was in a back room. I could tell she knew something and was divided about it. She was very sad and on her knees. I knew it was partially because she was totally helpless to assist or medicate the sick that were there. I picked her up off the ground and somewhat screamed at her”what is happening to these people?” She told me “don’t ask me that question” as she cried in fear and sadness. I yelled again for her to tell me everything you know,  what’s happening to these people?! She again told me not to ask that question. She knew they were victims of a trial run for the next pandemic. In the dream I just knew it. That’s is the info that kept coming to me in the dream, next plandemic and trial run experiment.  Please prepare yourselves, friends and family for this plague. As the leader of the Sanctuary Movement in Los Angeles during the 1980s, Father Luis Olivares brazenly defied local Catholic authorities and the federal government by publicly offering sanctuary to Central American migrants fleeing political violence and civil war, and later extending it to undocumented Mexican immigrants unable to legalize their status after the passage of the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. Twenty-five years after the priest's death, Mario T. García has written the definitive account of Olivares' life and the beginnings of the Sanctuary Movement in Los Angeles. In Father Luis Olivares, A Biography: Faith Politics and the Origins of the Sanctuary Movement in Los Angeles (UNC Press, 2018), García traces Olivares' humble beginnings as a poor boy growing up in San Antonio's west side barrio to his improbable rise as the “Gucci priest” of the Claretian order. After becoming involved with the Farmworker Movement, which led to an unexpected meeting with César Chávez in the mid-1970s, Olivares experienced a conversion that transformed him from the politically connected “GQ priest” to a community-centered cleric committed to achieving social justice for his barrio parishioners. Later, after assuming the leadership of Our Lady Queen of Angels Church (La Placita Church) in 1981, Olivares was transformed again, this time by Central American migrants seeking refuge from U.S. backed authoritarian regimes in El Salvador, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. Combining liberationist theology with Saul Alinsky-styled grassroots activism, Father Olivares shepherded La Placita Church and the City of Los Angeles into the center of U.S.-Central American geopolitics and the budding national Sanctuary Movement. In this in-depth and intimate portrait of Los Angeles' Latino priest, Garcia has not only written a biography of an unquestionably important individual, but also of a community and movement that continues to transform American society and politics. Twenty-five years after the priest’s death, Mario T. García has written the definitive account of Olivares’ life and the beginnings of the Sanctuary Movement in Los Angeles. In Father Luis Olivares, A Biography: Faith Politics and the Origins of the Sanctuary Movement in Los Angeles (UNC Press, 2018), García traces Olivares’ humble beginnings as a poor boy growing up in San Antonio’s west side barrio to his improbable rise as the “Gucci priest” of the Claretian order. In this in-depth and intimate portrait of Los Angeles’ Latino priest, Garcia has not only written a biography of an unquestionably important individual, but also of a community and movement that continues to transform American society and politics. The music is "Good Vibrations" at the start, by The Beach Boys; and "I Knew Jesus (Before He Was a Super Star)", at the end, by Glen Campbell. Here is the description for iTunes and also the blurb for Mockingbird: So much has been written -- I mean, SO MUCH -- concerning the so-called Historical Jesus: a welter of books and "Untersuchungen". I've spent most of my career reading these books, and writing a few, too. Then Pope Francis came along and put them all in a cocked hat. This is because if you want to see with your own eyes how Jesus operated in the New Testament -- how he acted, how he spoke, how he was desired, and how he was received -- all you need to do is watch Francis. Phrancis. The way Christ was with Zacchaeus, Bartimaeus, the man at the Pool of Bethesda, the woman with the issue of blood, Jairus -- the beat goes on: that's the way Francis acts, and acted while he was under the scrutiny of all of us. Just watch him on the Philadelphia Airport tarmac, at the shrine to St. Mary the Untier of Knots in Philadelphia, at Our Lady Queen of Angels School in East Harlem, and at the state prison near Philadelphia. Just watch! All your questions about the conduct and message of the historical Jesus -- or almost all of them -- will be answered. It just takes a few videos, a couple speeches, a few infants kissed, a few cripples blessed. Remember the song by The Fifth Dimension, "Blowing Away"? (George Harrison wrote a similar song.) So much of what I read and learned over 40 ytears just got, well, blown away -- by the Real Thing.

Summary of today's show: Hundreds of thousands of Catholic families now homeschool their children. Scot Landry and Fr. Matt Williams delve into the why and the how with Allison Gingras, Maureen Wittmann and Mark Schwedrt of the New England Homeschooling Conference that is taking place on May 19 at St. Monica parish in Methuen. They discuss the socialization myth, how Allison and Maureen decided to homeschool their children, and what attendees can expect at the conference. Listen to the show: Today's host(s): Scot Landry and Fr. Matt Williams Today's guest(s): Mark Schwerdt, Allison Gingras, Maureen Wittmann Links from today's show: Today's topics: New England Catholic Homeschooling Conference 1st segment: Scot wished a happy birthday to our producer Rick Heil, celebrating his 24th birthday. Scot and Fr. Matt discussed the Eucharistic Congress taking place this weekend in the North End. He encouraged interred people to register online at http://www.eucharisticcongress.org or to show up at Sacred Heart church in the North End of Boston on Friday night and Saturday morning. 2nd segment: Scot welcomed Mark Schwerdt, who is organizing the New England Catholic Homeschooling Conference on May 19 on behalf of St. Thomas More College. He said these conferences happen all over the country and they attract people from all over the region. It will take place St. Monica's in Methuen. There will be speakers as well as a hall full of vendors who provide resources to those who are homeschooling. Mark said this is the fourth New England conference, but it's the first that St. Thomas More is organizing. Previously, the event was held in western Massachusetts. Mark said they chose St. Monica's as a central location that is very accessible. He said in the future they hope for growth and probably will end up closer to Boston. Scot welcomed Maureen Wittmann of Homeschooling Connection. She encouraged parents to go to homeschooling conferences and meet face to face with other homeschoolers. There's nothing like being with dozens of like-minded people to energize you, plus see so many curricula up close. Scot asked her what led her to homeschool her families. Maureen said in eighth grade she was out of school for six months and realized she could do all her schoolwork in a couple of hours per day. Later on she met homeschoolers and was encouraged to begin. They have seen many benefits by strengthening their family life and atmosphere. Scot asked about spending all day with kids and how to avoid stress. Maureen said you get along better with your children by being with them all day. When they are at school all day there is actress when they come home to do chores and homework and all that. In homeschooling, they have a lower pace, go to Mass a few times per week together. It's not always smooth, but being together throughout the day improves the family dynamic. Allison Gingras said she home schools because God asked her to. She said she has a special needs child who thrives in that one-on-one environment. She added she's happy to be at St. Monica's parish because she's spends a lot of time praying to her. St. Monica was the mother of St. Augustine and prayed for her son when he was far from God. Allison said St. Monica offered fasts for Augustine's conversion, showing the quiet sacrifice of a mother. Scot asked Maureen why homeschooling stories are long stories. Maureen said it's not something that's the norm so you need more than one reason to do it. Homeschooling resources are more abundant today than when she started 20 years ago. She used to rely a lot on libraries and photocopies. Now new homeschoolers can be overwhelmed, Allison said the most important resource for her is her own prayer life. She spends a lot of time asking God for the plan to raise them. Then she goes to the resources. She relies on Rainbow Resource a lot for a curriculum. Scot wondered if there needs to be a kind of Catholic homeschooling Khan Academy. Maureen said at Homeschool Connections they're creating some resources like Khan Academy with a Catholic worldview. Fr. Matt asked how you measure so you know your child is keeping pace. Who sets the standards? Allison said the kids don't have to take the MCAS. She said in her town she has to meet the superintendent of schools and show her curriculum and submit progress reports. She chooses to follow the Massachusetts Frameworks. Maureen said in Michigan they have the most liberal homeschooling laws in the country. They don't have to report anything to the government. She does track progress and now three are in college. She said she never used a science textbook and he scored a perfect score on his science ACT. When he was younger, they read a lot of literature, watched videos, got out into nature. In high school, they got involved in another kind of science team activity. Scot asked Mark what led Thomas More College to become involved in the conference. Mark said the conference came to them providentially. The school's involvement is to minister to the families in the archdiocese. Catholic homeschoolers form a large percentage of students at the college, about 30 percent. He said they often are more prepared than Catholic and public school students. He they aren't just good students, but wonderful people as well.Scot asked what differences they do see in the homeschoolers from others. Mark said they do come prepared for a rigorous curriculum. He said it's also a myth that they aren't socialized. Often they are involved in home school cooperatives. Scot asked Maureen about the socialization myth. Maureen said for her family it's been proven to her that socialization in homeschool is equal to or superior than a site-based school. At theme, they're used to being around adults and children of all ages. She recalls how at ease her 16-year-old son was with caring for small children. She cited studies in how home schooled children vote more, use libraries more, and are as well socialized as any others. Allison said the biggest myth is that the children won't have as good an education without a professional teacher. She has a master's degree in education, but she's seen kids in school who aren't learning as well as home schooled kids. She notes that with her own children she's able to spend as much time as possible for them to pass topic. Fr. Matt asked about mentoring and support. Maureen said there are many people out there to help. She suggested going online and searching for a local homeschooling support group. If you sign up with a home study school, they have counselors. There are online forums and Facebook support groups. She said homeschoolers always seem excited to help each other. Maureen said 83 percent of homeschoolers do it for religious or moral reasons. They want a faith-based education primarily. It took off in the Eighties when evangelicals wanted to be able to pray in schools. As a homeschooler she can pray the rosary with her kids during the day or the Divine Mercy chaplet at 3pm. Her kids who discern a religious vocation are not dissuaded from that as being uncool, for instance.. Scot asked Allison how much benefit she gets from being able to structure her day and her family time to do more unusual activities that give a well-rounded educational experience. Allison said schooling can be 24 hours per day 7 days per week, so they can have different opportunities. They're not tied to a school day. They can on vacation when everyone else is in school. Scot said there might be a perception that homeschool kids are jealous of going to school with all other kids. Allison said people used to give her the look that homeschooling is weird. Now she hears kids say they wish she could teach them too. All her own kids miss is school lunch, which she says is a comment on her cooking. Maureen said she hears a variety of reasons. One friend was terribly bullied in school. Sometimes it's that her kids can be done with schooling in a few hours so they can do other projects and sports. Allison said her school system has a program where she bring her kids to play sports, They also have town sports they can join. She just has to pay the same fee the other kids pay. 3rd segment: This week's benefactor card raffle winner is Laurie Costello from Brookline, MA She wins The “Glory” Rosary Musical DVD If you would like to be eligible to win in an upcoming week, please visit . There's also going to be a used book sale. Allison said it will be great to talk to the person who has used the book before in homeschooling and get a personal review. Allison said her talk will be called “Swallowed by a Whale”. She said she tried to run from God when he called her to homeschool. When God calls you to this, he will provide everything you need to do this. You don't need a college degree or be a professional educator. She will also talk about her ministry called Reconciled to You, encouraging people to live a sacramental life and thus encourage child to live it too. Maureen's topic will be “High School and Beyond: Yes, You Too Can Homeschool High School”. She said in her old homeschool group, about half of the parents put their kids in high school because they didn't feel qualified or have resources. In her new city, it was rare, but they had a co-op in which they could take classes one day per week with teachers. She wants to encourage parents that they can do it. Maureen said in high school you get into deeper work and loftier subjects, but she finds it much more thrilling and interesting. She said she couldn't teach Latin, so she hired a tutor to teach them. She said she takes her planning each week before the Blessed Sacrament in prayer. Scot said the conference sounds like it would be good for homeschoolers, but also for those who are thinking about it and even those whose kids go to school. Mark said you will find families who care about the education of their children and want to give them the best resources available. Mark said to register online at http://www.newenglandhomeschool.com/. It's $15 per person, $25 for a married couple, and $5 for each teen. This is the preregistration rate until May 11. Pre-registering helps them to plan the conference and be prepared. It starts at 9:30 am and ends at 3:30pm followed by 4pm vigil Mass in the parish. Scot asked Allison about the greater challenges that come with homeschooling. Allison said it's not always easy to get motivated. Her own children have followed her lead in becoming night owls. They have had trouble getting things done, but she reminds herself that everything can be educational and that they can school 365 days per year. Scot said it sounds like adjusting your own expectations. Allison said this is why its great to connect with other homeschoolers because they have often had the same obstacles and can help each other with strategies and plans. Fr. Matt asked how the time use differ in homeschool. Allison said her children tackle a little of each subject per day. Maureen said her homeschool became much less structured, but it depends on the child. She said she has children with dyslexia, ADHD, and Asperberger's. For one she would give them many more breaks from work. Other days they would get on a roll and work on English for hours. Some parents set a schedule and teach certain subjects during certain hours. Allison said she knows people who are homeschooling as parts of groups or independently, but they all eventually connect in one way or another. She said it's important not to feel alone in it. Maureen said you need support. You need encouragement and prayers and to be that support for others. Maureen said about there are about 2.4 million homeschooling families and Catholics are about 25% of Christian homeschoolers. She guesses it's about 180,000 Catholic homeschooling families. And it's growing. Scot said the Church's teaching is that parents are the primary educators of their children. Maureen said the Diocese of Lansing has her on the school board as a homeschooler. Scot said Fr. Ed Riley is the Archdiocese of Boston's official liaison to homeschoolers.
