ND Filters - What Are They? What Do They Do? Do I Need One? Hi and welcome to Episode 134 of the Photography Explained podcast. Here is the answery bitND stands for neutral density. A neutral density filter reduces the amount of light that passes through the lens to the camera sensor. This gives the photographer more control over the camera settings that he or she can use, whilst still getting a correct exposure in a variety of lighting conditions. ND filters can be used in very bright conditions to help get the correct exposure, or to reduce the depth of field. ND filters allow photographers to use longer shutter speeds in conventional lighting situations for creative reasons, such as to blur water, clouds or anything moving in the photo.ND filters are basically sunglasses for cameras. And a very cool tool that I love to use!Listen for more, or check out the transcript and even the blog post - so many ways to find out more! What's next?Glad you asked! Here are some of my best tips for long Exposure photography: 1. Have a good Tripod, use the self-timer or better a remote 2. Find a good foreground middle ground background, use 3. Shoot HDR as needed to get a variety of exposures 4. You don’t need an ND Filter to start 5. Shoot toward the good light 6. Shoot toward the waves 7. I've got some amazing things in the mail I want to share with you all today. I've talked a lot about Wine Country Camera filters in my videos. Its a really unique filter system designed for high-end architectural and landscape photography applications. I'm good friends with the owner, Rod Clark and he just sent me the new 150 Filter Holder. The 150 is designed for wide-angle lenses that don't have filter threading. The attachment for the filter holder goes over the lens and tightens into place. The attachment is made of glass-filled nylon so its extremely tough but also as light as a feather. These are made on an industrial 3D printer so they can produce these for very unconventional lenses and have them in production in as little as 3 weeks. If you're interested in Wine Country - check out the website and use offer code AOP to save 15% off of anything and everything in their store. http://www.winecountry.camera Thanks to all who sent me books this week - check them out here! Neutral Density filters are extremely useful in video and still photography applications when you want to control light and use lower shutter speeds. Check out Blackstone filters at http://www.winecountry.camera/ You can get 15% off of anything in the store by using offer code AOP on checkout. Typically in video you will get the best motion estimation by using a 180 degree shutter. This is double the frame-rate of your video clip. In still photography and landscapes you want to be able to capture motion of things like clouds or water for a dramatic effect. All ND filters are not created equal. Color casts are a huge problem as are distortions from glass inconsistencies. I use only Blackstone filters for this reason. Music is from Epidemic Sound.
