[School of Everything Else 2024] Part 6 of 6 We come to it at last. The final episodes of one of the greatest animated shows ever gifted to TV. And we pulled out all the stops this time, because it's bittersweet to say goodbye again.  Originally I planned to get this whole season discussed in one sit-down session, considering how much ground we had covered back in Season 1 with two sessions. But in the end a second was essential. What we have here is that unplanned final session with Kaoru & Debbie (joyfully back after a long absence while they brought a small person into the world) blended with segments held over from that first recording to close us out with fireworks. Many thanks to everyone involved in this challenging and rewarding project. You made it special, like it deserved to be.  Episodes Covered: Dipper and Mabel vs. The Future / Xpcveaoqfoxso / Escape from Reality / Take Back the Falls I / Take Back the Falls II Guests: From Sequentially Yours  Kaoru Negisa  @Moonpanther22 and Debbie Morse  @bastet8300 Toby Jungius @TJungius of Through the Wind Door Hollywoo Actress  Maya Souris @Mayasantandrea Victoria Luna B. [School of Everything Else 2024] Part 4 of 6 Back in early 2020 (pre-pandemic even) just as Disney+ had launched, making this show super-accessible to everyone at last, we recorded three podcasts on the first season. Now we are finally back to talk about the second and final season and one of the most satisfying, bittersweet endings of any television series, and I am not being hyperbolic with that statement. Dipper and Mabel Pines are a pair of tweens who have to spend the summer in the strange Pacific Northwest town of Gravity Falls with their conman Grunkle Stan. Now answers to the big mysteries of the first season finally bubble to the surface, presenting us with both hilarious hijinks and mind-bending sci-fi. It's the kind of smart, emotionally sensitive, poignant and genuinely funny programming for kids that we've seen rise most reassuringly over the past decade. Episodes Covered: Into the Bunker, The Golf War, Sock Opera, Soos and the Real Girl, Little Gift Shop of Horrors, Society of the Blind Eye, Blendin's Game, The Love God, Northwest Mansion Noir, Not What He Seems, A Tale of Two Stans, Dungeons, Dungeons, & More Dungeons, The Stanchurian Candidate, The Last Mabelcorn, Roadside Attraction.  Guests: Hollywoo Actress  Maya Souris @Mayasantandrea Victoria Luna B. This week, Laureta Sela is still recovering from the loss of her voice and I need her to be comfortable and fighting fit for the epic finale of Panther Soul. So, what I have for you folks here is one of my two Gothic Tales from the recent collaboration project we pulled together with listeners of the School of Movies and New Century Multiverse. The Lights from Distant Bonfires paperback of 18 short stories is currently available on Amazon at the lowest price we could legally set it at (the better to get more copies out there and into eager hands). The plan is that over the next few months our writers will be able to organise their parts for an unabridged audiobook version. Myself, Sharon and Willow are proud to be among them.  And here is my story of a very haunted house.

Welcome to the Wind Door less travelled. Welcome to Century Tails. A new show as a part of Through The Wind Door, we discuss the world of New Century with a wide angle lens. Running themes, components, and topics of various kinds that relate not only to the New Century Multiverse, but to storytelling as a whole. As a catchall for discussions beyond the regular retrospectives, there may be different guests on, but for the short term, my partner will be Maureen Foley, known best as the voice of Hrao. With that in mind, we return to the world of Rama to discuss one of the storybuilding components of Tiger's Eye: the Gods of Durga Tribe. In this episode, we explore: The significance of elemental gods, and what various roles they encompass both in Rama and in other fiction Creation myths What determines who the head of a pantheon is Gods of war, death, light and darkness. These and many other moments both fun and serious await. [School of Movies 2021] The second cinematic adaptation of the 1934 mystery by Agatha Christie. When this first emerged in 2017 there was a bit of a sniffy outcry from the press. Why does it even exist? Why re-adapt a book that already had a 1974 film by Sidney Lumet and was a key episode of the David Suchet serials? Since the long-running British TV show and the 40+ year-old movie exist, that should be enough for any potential new audience member! After watching this gobsmackingly sumptuous epic, shot on glorious 65mm film by the always-meticulous Kenneth Brannagh, with a soaring score by Patrick Doyle and a cast so delicious you'll have no room for pudding... we respectfully beg to differ with those critics.  The first 42 minutes of this episode are spoiler-free. After that we delve into the many characters and their motivations. We recommend you see the film first, but if you can't or don't want to, the rest of the show shouldn't really ruin your eventual enjoyment of it. Full disclosure; This show was commissioned by Greg Downing and Toby Jungius, hosts of the Through the Wind Door podcast, which discusses the many stories in The New Century Multiverse. We wanted to chip in for their new microphones, but it felt like greasing the palms of our most prolific critics. So instead we just waived the fee on this one and let them buy their own mics. Welcome to Season 4. What was originally going to be four episodes delving into the two major components of the first fictional creation of Alexander Shaw has already sprawled, with Manifesto taking up three episodes total, over the course of two Skype sessions. And we'll see how long it takes us to discuss Dramatis Personae when it happens. But just as before, we find ourselves talking for a lot longer than expected about these books, even with a short book comprising a non-traditional narrative. Before we start discussing where we're going, we start with where we've been. The conversation capping off with a more thorough year in review of Through The Wind Door itself, and how we have evolved since February of 2020. From there we start talking about the influences and context that brought about the structure of the Handbook, and get into an overall synopsis of its constituent parts. And finally from there, discussing the propagandistic components of the Handbook, and why we choose to label it Manifesto. The Cartographer's Handbook is a blueprint and foundation for everything that came after, and pairs well as a prologue to the novel we will continue Season 4 with, Arlington. It's been talked about more than any other novel in the New Century oeuvre, but I hope over the course of the next month, we'll be able to come up with incisive thoughts and fresh takes on it, with the weight and context of the now twelve books that followed. And so, let us begin.   The New Century Multiverse books and audio dramas can be found on: https://www.newcenturymultiverse.com   Intro is "One Person, Listening Now" by Doctor Turtle of freemusicarchive.org Outro is "How Far We've Come" by Matchbox 20

This was normally going to wait till my new regular upload time of midnight, Saturday. But once more, I just couldn't hold back the signal. Part 1 with Maureen was much more high energy in general, a bunch of dorks connecting over this piece of media we loved and participated in. Part 2 is more sobering, going to more difficult places. Talking about our experiences during the last year, and about the internal struggles since 2016 that led Maureen to start stepping back from being a regular cast member of New Century. I do think we do a good job of rounding out our questions, and giving Maureen a chance to revisit her role in shaping New Century, as she ponders what is next for her. But more important is the surprise ending of this episode, and one that is resonant with the stories we have covered. The importance of finding hope in the storm, and holding fast to it. We end as we mean to go on. "[Greta] was not of this world. But also, she was of this world. She was a grounded character, but there was something so... like you could feel her weight but you couldn't touch her. She was so real to me because she was so... like what I had imagined some things that I heard about from my ex and her family history. And I sort of brought that into Greta to give her some grounding in the reality of it. And then, bearing in mind that she was really untouchable. It's a hard way to describe it, but she was a hard character to describe. [laughs]" - Maureen This is not quite us completing our set of interviews, because even now, Alex is adding more people to his indomitable voice cast. But Maureen is the last of the originals, and man, does she bring a powerful and varied story with her. We make our way through the potent women that she gives voice to, starting with Tabitha Chorley, discovering the hidden depths of Greta. Touching on the importance of our purple tiger to Maureen (which she has already spoken most eloquently on in Episode 20A), and from there, diving into the yet undiscussed personal elements of voicing Sarah Arlington, and the way she struggled with Merlene. "...this is not the first time that we will see someone react harshly to what they percieve as a calamitous threat. Someone far more sympathetic, someone that has lots of evidence to hand as to how things could turn out if not addressed. In the case of Hakka, the situation is framed very differently, and his story comes back to us now at the end to give us context to make us sympathetic to his journey. For those of you that haven't read the other books of New Century, you'll have to imagine what it's like on the other foot. When we have a clear protagonist having these kinds of conflicts with other protagonists. Indeed, you already got a little taste of it back in Secret Rooms. Where Annie encouraged Abigail towards empathy in regards to other humans, and Frank had to talk James down when the doctor claimed that they might not be treating the *wendigo* with empathy. So keep all of that in the back of your mind when we move on to Arlington and other future books." Part 4 of our analysis of the final chapters of Tiger's Eye, and what it has to say about Hakka's journey. We stop talking about Yesterday and start discussing Today. We dig deep on how Hakka feels about everything, how his anger and desperation grows as the events unfold, and his interaction with The Silent One as one firetalker encounters another, and they test each other.  We come close to the end, of Hakka's journey as well as Hrao's and Miguel's, to be resolved... next time.   The New Century Multiverse books and audio dramas can be found on: https://www.newcenturymultiverse.com   Intro is "The Legend of El Dorado" by Derek and Brandon Feitcher Outro is "I Will Not Bow" by Breaking Benjamin

"... okay, well, [Hakka and Hrao] are very much not aligned with one another. And yet, there is a familiarity there. And that just kind of gets the gears turning. But then, once the fight in the ruins happens, everything about the way Hakka speaks towards Hrao just feels exactly like an ex who still does care about you, but] is just so fundamentally not 'getting it'. The conversation on the surface is him trying to convey his goodwill towards her... it is very much a reminder of 'this is why we broke up'. It's kind of the energy of that fight scene." Hope you love Hakka talk. Cause we gonna talk-a about Hakka. This episode focuses of the revelation of Hrao and Hakka as mates. Both during their time together, and what it is for them now that they are apart with all of the baggage in play. How Hakka's insecurity and view of how the world should work spells doom for that relationship, and in the process, coming back to a serious discussion of how we relate to these stories and the people involved in their creation.   The New Century Multiverse books and audio dramas can be found on: https://www.newcenturymultiverse.com   Intro is "The Legend of El Dorado" by Derek and Brandon Feitcher Outro is "All Time Low" by Jon Bellion

One year of discussing our favorite series. And there's no better way to mark the occasion than a Non-Quick Review of book 10, Stonespring Maidens. "So much of New Century's fiction is the confrontation of big, frightening concepts. Things that will drive people into existencial depression.  But the author - and by extention, Hrao - looks at that and finds something that you can hold onto. Leon may well be a country with a lack of compassion. But there are still people within it that are willing to nurture hope." And here is the beginning of the end. Part 1 of our look at chapters 21-25, though this one really only focuses on the first of these chapters. We make further commentary on what is going on inside Captain Queensbury's head as well as speculation on her future. We also dive deep into the dashing Quincy Matthews and the final communion between Hrao and Doctor Shera. "[Mohawk] has defined himself by his cruelty. And once his cruelty has been forcibly stopped and [the totems] he has stolen have been stripped away from him and given back to who it belongs to... what is Mohawk? In the end, we never know him by his true name. So, by the end of this, it's decided: 'We will not communicate with you. We are not going to suffer your presence any more, and we are denying you the spiritual close and the idea that you may come back in whatever form is next. Just go'. it is a complete disintegration of what Mohawk is and what he has done. In the end... Mohawk is nobody." Part 3 of our look at... what was it? Chapters 16-20? Yes, those. Man, that was a lot of talking. looks ahead to the amount of talking on the final chapters  ...well.... shit. There's nothing for it, I suppose. "Hakka is ultimately- he's a kid. Like, in a way that a lot of adults secretly are. Especially at the age I kind of was when I was reading him. There's a lot of people who don't mature past a certain point, and fortunately got the opportunity to do so. But he- he very much thinks he's an adult. He thinks he's the shaman of the tribe. Much like Baltus: 'i'm this important pillar'. But the difference between him and Baltus is that Baltus believes that despite all the evidence to the contrary. Whereas Hakka is almost the other way around." - Spencer Part 2 of our glorious interview with Spencer. But as per the in joke of this episode, I have only two words to describe it: "Hoof hands." Almost whether you like it or not." - Spencer, talking about coping in the aftermath of tragedy and trauma. This is the day you've waited for, where we finally interview the noteworthiest of Nags, Spencer Leeb. As with all our other New Century voice actors, we grill him on his origins, and discover he has a performative past. We get in deep discussing his longest running character, Frank Butler, and discuss Spencer's tendencies towards playing various kinds of soldiers. Comparing and contrasting them all, especially those new audiences are most familiar with, Rafe and Butler. We also get into the antagonistic Baltus, and have some deep, serious conversations about running themes within his characters. There's laughs and sobering seriousness. ...Mohawk took [Hrao's] agency... and this is the first concrete step to fucking taking it back. She will not let his actions define her.   Part of our discussion of Chapters 16-20, as we finally move away from the events of Chapter 16, and back to Miguel's narration. We discuss the difference in the capacity of for understanding the passage of time, because Miguel is used to thinking in discrete time units even if he cannot record them. And then we discuss the other weighty topic of these chapters: Miguel killing a lion in cold blood, and all the stuff that entails. How he reaches his lowest point, but has to come out the other side without time to properly come to terms with what he has done. We also finally start to discuss one of the most heartwarming moments of the book, how it resonates even more in respect to the events a few chapters ago, and the unification of One Tribe accepting Miguel as one of them.   For those that make it to the outtakes: a picture of Toby and his hamster, Apple.   The New Century Multiverse books and audio dramas can be found on: https://www.newcenturymultiverse.com   Intro is "The Legend of El Dorado" by Derek and Brandon Feitcher Outro is "Together We Stand" by Scott Holmes of freemusicarchive.org

The parts of Tiger's Eye that the story focuses on and we tend to remember and value are the feelings of freedom and the vibrancy of this other world, and the uplifting connections between people who were previously disconnected and have every reason to be at odds with one another. This moment [Hrao's rape] is the antithesis of that, framing it as the darkest point of opposition against all that is valued and celebrated within this narrative. Part 1 of our discussion on Tiger's Eye, chapters 16-20 (or 16-21 in the audiodrama). And this one is a doozy, discussing one of the hardest hitting moments in the New Century ouvre. This episode focuses mostly on the events in chapter 16 itself. We talk about some of the elements of the chapter that hearkened back to other pieces of media like the 1977 miniseries "Roots" (remade more recently in 2016). And we also discuss how the central theme of communication is finally brought to focus now, during this dark hour. About how Hrao rises above despair and uses the knowlege that she has gained in order to rally the aboriginal cats, to the goal of One Tribe. But this conversation is bracketed by a discussion of rape in media, as this is one of the distinguishing events of this chapter. Trigger Warning: For those to whom any discussion of rape might be triggering in any way, the timestamps to avoid such conversation is 24:24 to 1:05:55. (This means a bulk of the episode is verboten, but everyone needs to make their own call.) We hope we have done our best to address such a serious subject, and that you are also able to come with us on this journey. But if not, less fraught fare will be available next week.   Roots - The Golden Cannon: https://youtu.be/fZWiEi1XBv8 Levar Burton's speech about the Roots remake: https://youtu.be/43F7BFETmyg Anansi Tells A Story: https://youtu.be/BgOH-3vcWro Why is it we made a joke about different versions of Tiger's Eye having different faces: https://tinyurl.com/y88m8ngf   The New Century Multiverse books and audio dramas can be found on: https://www.newcenturymultiverse.com   Intro is "The Legend of El Dorado" by Derek and Brandon Feitcher Outro is "Secure Yourself" by Indigo Girls

"...at the end of the day, the effect of his decision is not as important as what it means to Miguel. And what it means for Hrao, that he came back for her. He may or may not have saved her life. But the significance is that he tried." Our final episode covering chapters 11-15 of Tiger's Eye! This one is choc full of discussion on a number of different topics: • A further analysis of all our three new lion characters, and positing comparisons between ego, superego, and id. • Miguel's decisions and imagination, and how his culture plays into understanding the world of Rama. • A digression into Miguel correctly gendering Hrao, and the role of gendered language. • Further analysis of Miguel and Hrao's developing relationship, muddied by imperfect communication. All this and more, and we're only half way done with the book. The second half? And that's what negative space is when it comes to narration. It's your understanding that what you're being told isn't an omnicient third person narrator whose job is to insure you are given every detail. It's a character *telling* you this. And that character will have their own biases and thing that will inform what they choose to tell and not tell you. That is just as much a part of the characterization as the events of the plot that you see in it.   Digging deeper into our topic list for chapters 11-15, we get back into discussing Miguel's story. I end up learning some more about my cohost above and beyond our recorded conversations, and how they influence both his reading of the media he likes and the difficulties he has expressing his thoughts sometimes. We also talk about the metaphor of the lions of Albion and what it means for them to be the overarching threat to our aboriginal cats instead of humanity as was implied in previous chapters.   The New Century Multiverse books and audio dramas can be found on: https://www.newcenturymultiverse.com   Intro is "The Legend of El Dorado" by Derek and Brandon Feitcher Outro is "The Boy in the Bubble" by Paul Simon

[Krieger] believes in the value of hope in the face of adversity, the balance between the two extremes of overwhelming madness and supreme bliss and harmony. "One of the truisms about parenting is that we can't always accept the advice of our parents due to the emotional hang-ups we have about them. One of my favorite quotes is that parents push buttons like a peyote dealer working straight commission. And absent their real parents, that's basically what Katherine is to them. If new wisdom and guidance is to come, perhaps it has to be someone else to give it." The second half of Episode 11, and it's all Katherine, all the time. We spend a lot of time praising Alex, so we shouldn't also be afraid to put his heroes under scrutiny. But maybe that's what he wants us to do? (Yes.) So we do a deep dive on how Katherine Holloway's actions or inactions can be interpreted. Is she right about James and Abigail? Has she fallen down on her job, or was it inevitable due to everything she was carrying on her shoulders? Also, some more poetry analysis.   The New Century Multiverse books and audio dramas can be found on: https://www.newcenturymultiverse.com Intro is "The Talons of Adventure, The Antlers of Romance" by Doctor Turtle Outro is "Ghost" by Indigo Girls.

"All three of those things are lost to the adult James. They are all things that were associated with pleasant memories... but they are gone. It's a sweet smell to him because - like all fresh things - it is ephemeral. Momentary. Dissipating before being lost. Yet those fleeting moments stay, lingering... and haunting him forever." Yeah, this episode is coming out early. Because I couldn't hold it back. I finished early, and I was just too proud of it. But y'all have a lot more content coming out over the next week, so there will be plenty. This (half) episode covers chapters 14-17. That means discussion of the N-word (yaaaaay) in fiction, more racial content, how New Century starts to address alternate sexuality, the formative tragedy of James and Abigail... and finally, a little bit on how the brain works, and the metaphor implicit in the events of these chapters. "[Mayor Buck] is someone New Century doesn't have a vested interest in because he is not someone who is trying to bring that titular 'New Century' to pass." The second half of Episode 9, where we mix the problematic with the heartwarming. Today we cover the peculiar story of Old Man McGucket Malloy, the characters of Mary Sampson and Mayor Buck, and talk about that heartwrending speech by Annie, about how fragile humans are, and what it means when everyone has lost someone, and has been in mourning for years. The episode was originally meant to cover only Chapters 10-12, but because we get into it a bunch with Mary and Buck, in order to avoid spoilers, please have read Chapter 13 as well. We still save the bulk of that conversation for next episode, though. Because there is a lot of it. I am no longer going to use the Black Lives Matter hashtag in my scrawl, because while I still believe it, I don't think my podcast should be considered relevant to the conversation. I am going to consider what else I can do to continue to show my support. But in the meantime, in memory of Chadwick Boseman, here is a cosplay of an alternate universe T'Challa, where he adopts the moniker King in a wild west setting. "It's a 21st century take on an era hundreds of years removed that isn't afraid of holding gothic up to the light." Welcome to part one of our final episode on the New Century Multiverse story, Let Them Go. Even with thorough editing, this episode ended up very long, and after the experience with our introductory episode that covered chapters 1-5, I decided not to do that to you, or myself. So our final discussion is divided into two episodes, the next to be released the following Monday. This go around, we reflect on the story through the lens of the gothic genre, which Toby and I boned up on prior to tackling this episode. We talk about the components of said genre, and where the story plays it straight, and where it necessarily, wonderfully diverges. We learn about the subgenre of the Female Gothic, and we have a lot of laughs along the way. One of the great things about finally talking about the story as a whole is nothing is held back, but we don't have to dive too deeply into heavy subjects: we already did most of that heavy lifting.   #BlackLivesMatter #PrideMonth   Recommended links for fun and profit learning: Sharon Shaw, modelling for the LTG cover   https://twitter.com/NewCenturyShaw/status/1230572711455399937?s=19   The original podcast graphic Alex designed on the fly:   https://twitter.com/NewCenturyShaw/status/1221842430368022528?s=19   Links we used to learn more about Gothic:   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gothic_fiction (specifically Elements of Gothic and The Female Gothic) https://www.nature.com/articles/palcomms201742 https://epublications.marquette.edu/gothic_supernatural/   The New Century Multiverse books and audio dramas can be found on: https://www.newcenturymultiverse.com   Intro is "Moonrise" by Chad Crouch Outro is "Bird Set Free" by Sia

"If a weapon could be said at all to be haunted, this weapon could easily qualify. Haunted by memory, if not by spirits." If you need a mental break from everything that's going on, join Greg and Toby for further discussion on the book Let Them Go, a story that brings us heroes that do triumph over the dark and don't give in to despair. Me? I'm fighting my despair by putting the episode out on time. This episode may include more edits than usual: there were several vocal distortions that I don't yet know how to clean up properly, and a bunch of rambling that I replaced with more succinct passages. There's a number of heavy subjects we discuss along the way, but also get into the symbolism of a shotgun, the power of emotions and logic, and how our heroine prepares herself for the final showdown. Episode covers Chapters 10-12. Trigger warning: this episode also discusses physical and emotional abuse on a personal and societal level.   #BlackLivesMatter Please support bail funds for protestors, links to several in the list below:   https://twitter.com/MatthewACherry/status/1266895545022287872   Audio excerpts taken from: https://newcentury.bandcamp.com/album/new-century-let-them-go   The New Century Multiverse books and audio dramas can be found on: https://www.newcenturymultiverse.com   Intro is "Moonrise" by Chad Crouch Outro is "Outro" by Evgeny Teilor Both are available on: http://freemusicarchive.org   Greg is @MightyGregDoge on Twitter Toby is @TJungius on Twitter

This is chapter 7 from New Century Book 5: The Princess Thieves If you want to hear more it is available on Bandcamp in full audiobook form.  A swashbuckling comedy fantasy adventure from the creator of Tiger's Eye and Arlington. In 1873 an enormous doorway between realms opened up in the north of London and on the other side was a parallel British Isles named Britannica. This place was home to two new races, the short, stubborn, Duart and the hulking, green-skinned Akka. What they brought with them when they stepped through to aid us and settle in our damaged country was an army of tough firecasters to see off our monster problem and a class system that humans fit roughly in the middle of. In the week this story takes place, Gwendoline, the last remaining family member of Britain's royal Saxe-Coburg bloodline is preparing to be married to the Duart lord; Aaron of Britannica. Before that happens the young princess will be going on the adventure of a lifetime, through the dangerous, filthy streets of London, through the doorway between worlds and beyond. Part of the New Century Multiverse, a saga set across many worlds with each story constituting a piece of the grand mosaic. The first six stories in New Century Phase 1 can be listened to in any order... If you are one of these people, welcome. Six stories. You can start with any of the first five.  The Cartographer's Handbook Secret Rooms Tiger's Eye Arlington The Princess Thieves SteamHeart The current ongoing fiction podcast story is: The Princess Thieves.  The first four are available in complete audio form on Bandcamp. [Digital Gonzo 2013] This is an audio drama adaptation of The Killing Joke: written by Alan Moore, and originally illustrated by Brian Bolland for DC comics in 1988. This show is dedicated to Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy, two of my all-time heroes. Their inspirational work is a key reason why I love Batman so much, and their immense talent as voice-over artists is what made me want to produce performance pieces like this. All credit to Alan Moore for his excellent writing. The few minor changes I made were to facilitate the audio format. Also artist Brian Bolland. If you enjoyed this, do please check out Batman: Breakdown, which is an original story written by myself and rendered into an accompanying audio drama. You can find it on this podcast feed or on YouTube. As a bonus for newcomers I've included the first six minutes of Breakdown to act as a taster at the close of this production. If you like my work on this you should check out my original audio drama, The New Century Multiverse, the previous stories are available in audiobook form on Bandcamp with new episodes released as a weekly podcast.  A huge thank you to my cast, without whom, this would be a considerably less vibrant production.
