The 2024 Iowa caucuses have come and gone, with the key takeaways some freezing temperatures, low turnout, and a Trump slam dunk. 15 percent of eligible Iowans gave 51% of the vote to the former president. Of course, that also means that about half voted for somebody other than Trump. Most disappointed was Nikki Haley, who surprised us all with a lagging third place, while Ron DeSantis pulled ahead to second. So, is the 2024 GOP nomination a done deal for Trump? Maybe. I talk with Sean Cribbin, survivor of serial killer Bruce McArthur, and Sean's partner Steve Sauder, who also provided the music score for the documentary. Was I Next? The Sean Cribbin Story, a multiple-award winning documentary from iCogitate Productions, tells the story of Sean Cribbin, a gay man who lived through a shocking brush with death at the hands of Canada's most brutal serial killer, Bruce McArthur. After years of communicating via online dating apps, in July of 2017 Sean agreed to meet McArthur, but once they were at his apartment, McArthur gave Sean a larger than normal dose of GHB, a known date-rape drug, which made him black out.McArthur photographed Sean's unconscious body in a number of ritualized poses, as he had done before with his 8 other victims before killing them, dismembering them, and hiding the remains in large planters. This time, however, McArthur's roommate unexpectedly returned home, having taken the afternoon off work, unknowingly saving Sean's life. After regaining consciousness, confused and entirely unaware of how closely he had come to dying, Sean returned home and chalked the encounter up to a bad date.Seven months later, in January of 2018, in the days after McArthur was arrested for 2 of the 8 murders he would eventually be charged with, the Toronto Police contacted Sean. They had found the photographs of his unconscious form on McArthur's computer, and asked him to come in for an interview. It is at this interview that he learned the truth about what happened at the hands of a serial killer now charged with multiple counts of murder, of the remarkable coincidences which saved his life, and just how close he had come to his own end.While the extraordinary events above serve as the catalyst for what follows, they are only the starting point for the documentary (in fact, the filmmakers made the conscious decision to avoid saying the killer's name whenever possible in the film), which tells a remarkable tale of trauma, survivor's guilt, cyber-bullying, victim-blaming and eventually healing.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/Hellblazerbiz. Sean starts the show by telling us details of his date with the most notorious serial killer in Canada of all times Bruce Mc Arthur.All evidence points towards Sean being the next victim and the terrifying revelations of what McArthur was planning for him, that was discovered after he was arrested. It all started with Sean communicating with McArthur over dating apps for 3 years. He groomed him for that long.Everyone knew there was a serial killer in the gay village neighborhood - 8 men had gone missing.Sean tells us that McArthur had been married with 2 children before he was outed as gay. He was a landscaper and a Mall Santa, who also did community service. There was no reasonfor Sean to be alarmed. Sean got in Bruce's car for their first date and Sean did not get any weird feelings at all. He even made some jokes about there being a serial killer on the loose. Sean talks in detail about going to Bruce's 19th floor corner unit apartment and about him taking the drug GHB that he likes to use when engaging in sexual relations and when done in proper doses relaxes him and heightens his senses but if given too much can make you unconscious. By a lucky coincidence Bruce McArthur's roommate came home early totally unexpected and that stopped what was going to be Sean's murder by the hands of Bruce. This saved his life. When Sean was speaking to an investigator to give information she told him that there were photos of him on Bruce's computer. The same staged photos as he had taken of his other victims. Photos of him handcuffed to the bed, a hood over his head, his eyes duck taped and the murder weapon, a pipe pushed up against his throat. The investigator got teary and told Sean she was glad he was here. A PHD in criminology labeled Bruce a sexual sadist. We talk about Bruce dismembering the bodies and hiding them in planters. When the forensic pathologist peeled the planters back she found a head, arms and legs.Sean says that was a very hard day for him, because that would have been his final resting place and the reality of it hit him very hard. Bruce McArthur is in prison, not eligible for parole until he is 91 years old. He lived a double life, a cunning, manipulative lying murderer. The only time he has spoken since his arrest was he said GUILTY 8 times in court. The belief is that there are way more victims. This August episode of the webcomics series begins with an introduction to Sean Kleefeld, the new cohost of the show. With Andy W. deciding to step down from his duties -- he'll be doing other exciting things with The Comics Alternative in the weeks to come! -- Derek has asked Sean to step in and join him for the guys' monthly look at webcomics. So listeners of the series can now benefit from Sean's discerning critical eye and deep expertise in the medium. In fact, all of the titles that they are discussing this month stem from Sean's recommendations. They begin with Steve Hamaker's Plox, a currently ongoing series centered on the relationships among three online gamers. While the premise may appear at first glance to be hackneyed, a satiric look at gaming geeks and fanboys/girls, this narrative is anything but. In fact, Hamaker's focus is more on the dynamics of identity formation and interpersonal relations than it is on pop culture stereotypes. One of the themes woven throughout the series (so far) is the discrepancy between our public persona and the ways we define ourselves from within, and how that tension reveals a search for authenticity. Next Sean and Derek look at Bird Boy, a fantasy/adventure series from Anne Szabla. This is the coming-of-age story of Bali, a young and diminutive would-be hunter whose inadvertent heroism -- and the accidental discovery of a legendary sword -- plunges him headlong into his tribe's creation myth. The guys comment not only on Szabla's beautifully detailed art, but also on her keen sense of pacing, how she sequences her panels to give depth to the action. Beginning in October 2010, this webcomic that is currently into its second volume. Finally, the guys look at an already completed work, Brendan Albetsky's The Mouth. This is a short work that can be found on Hell to Breakfast, the home to the Albetsky's online art as well as his podcast, The Hell to Breakfast Show. On the surface The Mouth is the story of three siblings who venture into the forest for an unlikely, and gothic-inspired, revelation. However, densely packed within this brief webcomic is a meditative, philosophical exploration -- Sean calls it zen-like -- exploring the very process and purpose of life. All three of this month's webcomics are worth checking out, and the guys' detailed discussion of them is just the right springboard for what promises to be a new and fruitful cohosting relationship.
