Today on cinema and cocktails. It's the "Get out of jail" episodes, as we highlight three crime dramas about trying to have some fun when you get out of the big house. This first is about a guy who wants to reunite his family in "The Ghost Who Walks", the second centers around the anger a daughter has towards her father in "Night Comes On", and the last is an epic tale of sacrifice and redemption in the "Shot Caller." All three films can be found on Netflix.

This week we're so lucky to have the director of the critically acclaimed new movie Night Comes On, Jordana Spiro. She is maybe best known for her acting roles in shows like 'My Boys,' 'The Mob Doctor,' and 'Ozark.' But after receiving her Masters degree in film from Columbia, she began directing shorts and her most recent debut feature. She's on the show to talk about another "Night" movie, Charles Laughton's The Night of the Hunter. She finds many parallels between this film and her own. And she even shares a similar career path to the director, actor Charles Laughton. April and her discuss the film's completely unique but assured visual style, along with the incredible performances of Robert Mitchum, Lillian Gish, and Shelley Winters. Plus, they cover the reason that this is the only film Charles Laughton ever directed. Episode 124 of One Week Only! It's a great week with some really strong films. Our key film is "Cocote," a stylistically unique and morally complex drama from the Dominican Republic about an Evangelical Christian man who returns home and faces the scrutiny of his traditional family, who want him avenge his father's murder. Directed by Nelson Carlo De Los Santos Arias, it's a rich look at the island's culture & customs, weaving them together with a complex moral drama about family, revenge & justice. (25:20) We also review Japanese legal drama "The Third Murder" directed by Hirokazu Koreeda (2:30), revenge drama "Night Comes On" directed by Jordana Spiro (10:20) and Iranian moral drama "No Date, No Signature" directed by Vahid Jalilvand (17:25). With Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Ethan Hunt yet again prevails over a mission that makes no logical sense, yet thrills us all. And that is our springboard for this week’s topic: Impossibly Impossible Missions. Movies often require a suspension of disbelief, and often times, films with a mission at hand – i.e., a plan that benefits the greater good – require you to physically remove your brain from its holster in order to continue. This week, we’re looking at several missions that we believe could never have resulted in success in reality. Also this week: 24 reboots again, Star Wars welcomes back its Princess, Hardwick returns, reviews of Netflix’s Extinction, Castle Rock, a debate on the star power of Tom Cruise, and much more.
