This week, as we count down the final episode of Stageworthy, host Phil Rickaby talks with the passionate Emilio Vieira, who takes on the role of Palamon in Shakespeare BASH'd unique production of "Two Noble Kinsmen." Together, we explore the thrills and challenges of performing one of the Bard's less frequently staged plays. Emilio reveals the intricacies of making Shakespeare's language resonate with contemporary audiences and discusses the emotional highs and lows his character endures in this tale of honour and forbidden desire. Embark on a behind-the-scenes journey with me as we examine the craft of adapting Shakespeare for today's audiences. We contrast the festival stage's grandeur with the intimacy of smaller productions and dissect the professional growth that comes from long-term engagement with Shakespearean drama. Moreover, the conversation turns to survival—both of the actor during an arduous theatre season and the creative spirit during the pandemic. We shed light on the birth of the SuddenSpark Collective and its aspirations, offering an inspiring look at the resilience and creativity of theatre professionals in unprecedented times. Bio Emilio Vieira is an actor/ creator currently working on Shakespeare BASH'd's Two Noble Kinsmen, playing at the Theatre Centre from January 25 to Feb 4, 2024. Emilio is about to embark on his 7th season with the Stratford Festival playing Antonio in Twelfth Night, Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet and Richard Dazzle in London Assurance. Other credits include: Richard II, Grand Magic, Richard III, The Miser, Coriolanus, The Tempest, Napoli Milionaria!, Tartuffe, Macbeth, All My Sons, Bunny (Stratford Festival); The Three Musketeers (RMTC); Towards Youth: a play on Radical Hope (Crow's Theatre); Tartuffe, Measure for Measure, Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It, Titus Andronicus (Canadian Stage); february: a love story (Sudden Spark Collective/Globus Theatre); Cymbeline (Shakespeare BASH'd). Emilio has appeared on HBO's Titans and some indie projects you haven't seen. He continues to voraciously audition for film and television without much success. During the pandemic, Emilio, and his creative collaborator Ellen Denny launched Sudden Spark Collective, a company aimed at producing heartwarming stories as soup for the pandemic soul. Their two projects, february: a love story, and Above Ground Floor had successful digital debuts with great acclaim. Both went on to stream with Stratfest@Home, garnering international attention and meriting them an interview with Tom Power on CBC's Q. Emilio is a proud graduate of York University's Acting Conservatory and studied under the direction of Martha Henry and Stephen Ouimette at the Birmingham Conservatory for Classical Theatre. He loves dogs, hugs, mint chocolate and cricket! Instagram: @emiliovieira Support Stageworthy Donate: tips.pinecast.com/jar/stageworthy

The Portland-based Northwest Classical Theatre Collaborative has a mission of bringing the art to underserved communities and performing in nontraditional spaces — like prisons and homeless shelters. And it’s deliberately financially accessible as well, with $10 ticket prices well below most admission prices for similar kinds of productions. Its new show “Happy Days” is a 1961 classic by Samuel Beckett, the late playwright best known for “Waiting for Godot.” Northwest Classical’s production is in a space that was once a Victoria’s Secret at Portland’s Lloyd Center shopping mall. Director Patrick Walsh joins us to talk about the production and the theatre’s mission, along with lead actress Diane Kondrat, who’s on stage for the entire 90-minute play.

Ty Jones, the producing artistic director of the Classical Theatre of Harlem, talks about how CTH has survived the pandemic; continues to provide theatrical productions and theatre-based educational and literary programs for free or at little cost to Harlem residents, businesses, schools, community-based organizations and all who seek Harlem as a cultural destination from around the world; and is trying to create a permanent home for not only itself, but all of Harlem's classical institutions. FEATURING: how we define classics; unintended consequences of the last two years; the difficulty of keeping the drama on the stage; the possibility of transforming lives, especially for children; creating a sustainable organization; the importance right now of doubling down on support for theater; how costs have skyrocketed post-pandemic; connections to Steve Harris and The Practice; getting the tools, and then sharpening them; the challenge of creating a home for the arts while also bringing the arts to where the people are; adhering to the motto of "go big and get a home!"; and a hugely important push-back on the idea that a parent has failed if their child goes into the arts! The Exagoge of Ezekiel the Tragedian is the earliest documented Jewish play, thought to have been written in Alexandria, Egypt in the second century BCE.  From the fragments that remain, we know that it tells the biblical Exodus narrative in the style of a Greek tragedy. In 2016, theatre dybbuk combined the extant 269 lines with modern-day stories of refugees, immigrants, and other voices from the American experience to form a new adaptation, titled exagoge, that relates the ancient story to contemporary issues. This episode, presented in collaboration with the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Studies in Jewish Education at Brandeis University, features performances from exagoge intercut with a conversation recorded at the annual convention of the Central Conference of American Rabbis in March 2022 between theatre dybbuk's artistic director, Aaron Henne, and Dr. Miriam Heller Stern. Dr. Stern, the Vice Provost for Educational Strategy at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion and founder of Beit HaYozter/the Creativity Braintrust, studied theatre dybbuk's process alongside Dr. Tobin Belzer during the creation of the adaptation. This episode is made possible in part by a grant from the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.

Rebel-Actor, are you ready to dive into the sexy dirt of Shakespeare, soccer and life !?! Join me and today's very special guest, Rodrigo Beilfuss! Grab a pen + paper and get ready to jot down an abundance of aha's!   Rodrigo Beilfuss spent four years in Ontario with the Stratford Festival, and then relocated back to Winnipeg to be the new Artistic Director of Shakespeare in the Ruins (SIR) in the Fall of 2019. Born and raised in Brazil, Rodrigo moved to Winnipeg in 2001 as an exchange student, discovering Hamlet in high-school. Mr Gord McLeod is to be blamed for everything, for Rodrigo hasn't stopped pursuing Shakespeare since. In Winnipeg, Rod was a founding member of Theatre by the River, and he has directed and acted in several productions at various local theatres. Rod also has a passion for teaching, and he is a theatre instructor at various organizations and universities. He holds a BA (Honours) from the University of Winnipeg, an MA in Classical Acting from England's LAMDA, and he's a graduate of Stratford's two flagship programs: the Birmingham Conservatory for Classical Theatre and the Michael Langham Workshop for Classical Direction. More info at rodrigobeilfuss.com   In theatre, we always talk about being in the moment. But do we really know what that means?   Today, you'll discover: How Rodrigo transitioned to AD of SIR after four years in Stratford in 2019 SIR's dedication to performing Shakespeare in nontraditional spaces, particularly in the ruins of an old monastery with promenade staging, expanding the sense of the classical canon The outreach work SIR does with youth, emerging artists and inmates at Stony Mountain Penitentiary  How inmates get Shakespeare in a way trained actor's do not The outreach work at Stony Mountain is an exercise in empathy, exchange of experiences and a search to find a path forward, together SIR is performing The Winter's Tale in French and English this summer What you can do that is inspired by the moment as opposed to in spite of the moment  How Shakespeare was a passport for Rodrigo from Brazil to Canada  Why it's a fallacy for us to go around thinking Shakepearan actors know what they're talking about The danger of fatal fluency (when an actor pretends that Shakespeare's language is normal) How Shakespeare and soccer are cultural unifiers How futebol (soccer) is considered an art in Brazil Why Rodrigo loves the chaos, imperfections and improvisations of soccer Why you don't have to follow the narrative of what you think your life as a theatre artist should be all the time What Rodrigo is excited about giving to actors right now   And SO much more!! "Shakespeare's world was not that of the 'Renaissance Pleasure Fair.' It was a world of oppression, spying and betrayal, mass executions, censorship. But understanding how we got something precious from that should be part of what strengthens our grasp of what we have received from the past." The great literary scholar and Shakespeare expert Stephen Greenblatt is here for a discussion about The Bard--- his plays, his influence, and how one goes about teaching Shakespeare. Themes that have come up before on this show reappear here, notably what does one do with the uncomfortable, sometimes disturbing content of The Taming of the Shrew, Othello, or The Merchant of Venice? What is a college class supposed to make of all this in America in 2021? How does Greenblatt take lessons from the history of world art and culture and funnel them through Shakespeare to his students, to the readers of his books? Also included here is a deep dive into Verdi's Otello-- what Greenblatt believes to be a profoundly moving treatment of one of Shakespeare's great masterpieces. Support Talking Beats with Daniel Lelchuk on Patreon. You will contribute to continued presentation of substantive interviews with the world's most compelling people. There is a new webseries that has been all the buzz on Instagram, and its called Black Girls Guide to Fertility, created, written, and based on Sonhara' Eastman’s own battle with infertility. Black Girls Guide to Fertility tackles infertility in a profoundly intimate way that’s both dramatic and comedic without ever feeling rigid. It focuses on Ava, a 37-year old romance novelist, who faded into obscurity after finding love–and now finds herself on the rise again after self-publishing a diary detailing her fertility woes. Each episode is a recreation of Ava’s diary entry, adding a unique and compelling touch to the everyday struggle of infertility. I had the pleasure of prescreening the first two episodes and when I tell you, you do not want to miss this webseries. In this episode we discuss Sonhara’s vision, her personal infertility battle, and what is next with Black Girls Guide to Fertility. The webseries premieres on Friday, January 18, 2019 and if you are listening to this in real time that is two days away. Face2Face with David Peck

Ngozi and Face2Face host David Peck talk about Ms. Lovely, Sarah Baartman, freedom, shame and the colonial gaze, “othering” and why we no longer have excuses. Buy Your Tickets here. Synopsis: The Emancipation of Ms. Lovely, which is being staged as part of the inaugural season at The Crow's Theatre March 28 - April 8, 2017. The one-woman play stars Ngozi Paul (Da Kink in My Hair) and is directed by Canadian Screen Award winner Zack Russell (She Stoops to Conquer).  Especially relevant in today's social and political climate, The Emancipation of Ms. Lovely is a hilarious, timely and evocative tale of a young woman’s search for love and agency. At different stages in her life Lovely struggles with her understanding of herself as a Black woman and awakens to her sexual identity as mirrored through popular culture. Personal stories from Lovely's life interweave with the story of Sarah Baartman (The Venus Hottentot), the historical symbol of the commodification of Black women’s sexuality. From the 21st century twerk to the “faux-cul” of the 19th century, Lovely travels a musical landscape using movement, sound and dance, looking for self-love and emancipation on her journey.  The play was a Now Magazine critic's pick at the 2015 SummerWorks Festival, where Ngozi Paul also won the Spotlight Award for her performance. Would you be interested in speaking to her about the play and it's broader context in today's society? Biography Ngozi Paul is an award-winning Canadian producer of film, television and trans-media projects. Ngozi is best known for creating, producing and starring in the award winning television series ‘da Kink in My Hair. Relutante a início, Teseu aceita a tarefa. ATW - SDCF Masters of the Stage

In October of 1984, Hungarian-Canadian director John Hirsch, who directed classical theatre for thirty-two years and served as Artistic Director of the Stratford Shakespeare Festival from 1981-1985, sat down with Richard Harden for a ninety-minute roundtable discussion. He talks about the definition of classical theatre, which he defines as plays which survive the test of time and speak to audiences of all ages, and classicists, who submerge themselves in a single subject. Hirsch and Harden discuss Shakespeare, Chekhov, and the ecology of playwriting in which playwrights must know the classics to write new ones. The industry struggles they address, including financial accessibility and lack of importance outside of the arts world, bear a striking resemblance to those facing the theatre world over twenty-five years later. For an insightful exploration of classical theatre or to recall a time when an expensive Broadway ticket cost "only" $45, listen to this interview!
