Becki Hayes is a Texas-born SAG-AFTRA actress known for both deaf and hearing roles. Born with a hereditary, progressive hearing loss, Becki's hearing rapidly declined, rendering her profoundly deaf by age 12. Becki made her network TV debut in ABC's "Gideons Crossing" opposite Academy Award winner Marlee Matlin, portraying a deaf teen at odds with her parents over cochlear implants. Life imitated art for Becki, as shortly after the show aired, she underwent bilateral cochlear implant surgery. She considers her former deafness a gift to her craft. "When one sense is absent, the other senses are heightened immensely. I had to become such an intense listener by necessity. In conversation, I was hyper focused on facial cues and body language to kind of fill in the gaps when words were unclear and provide context clues in order to react appropriately. My superpower is "hearing" beyond the spoken. It's authentic acting gold. I'm very lucky!" Becki is currently developing a dramedy (2020) based on her own adventures as a formerly deaf wife and mother adjusting to life changes after cochlear implants. "I'm constantly working out what life is about through my films." Mary Gerretsen

Play Episode Listen Later May 16, 2020 43:05

Mary Gerretsen is an award-winning filmmaker with an eye for stories that try to find the subtle joys of life in even the most tragic and somber sides of humanity. The youngest child of four to a couple of Beatnik Canadian filmmakers, when she wasn’t dreaming up stories in her bed under the stairs in the basement (before Harry Potter made it a cool thing), she was drawing, playing music, writing stories, and running around her neighborhood in Toronto. But as whimsical and quirky as her life seemed, she was never far from tragedy. Her mother suffered four aneurysms and a stroke and was partially handicapped since she was four years old, and when she was barely out of school, both her parents tragically passed away within years of each other. She followed in her filmmaker parents’ footsteps, graduating with a BFA in Film Studies from Ryerson University and pursued a career in film and television in Toronto, where she produced, directed, shot, and edited for television shows including CASH CAB, OVER THE RAINBOW, and STEVEN AND CHRIS, she also directed and produced music videos for Independent Bands like EVENING HYMNS and HEARTBEAT HOTEL. She went on to attend the USC School of Cinematic Arts’s Graduate Production Program where she channeled the lessons of her life into the films she was directing. Her documentary films GEORGE, THE ART OF THE LOST TRADE, and 7/8ths OF THE WAY THERE, all tackle the notion of finding the joys of life in the face of death in their own way, and those, along with her narrative film, ORANGE ARE YOU GONNA DANCE WITH ME?, have received over a dozen awards and have been accepted into more than fifty film festivals. While at USC, she was awarded various awards for excellence, including the Annenberg Scholarship, the University’s top scholarship. Since graduating, she has continued to direct, produce, shoot, and edit on a variety of long-form and short-form documentaries and narrative films, including serving as Second-Unit Director of Photography on Budweiser’s documentary KINGS OF BEER. She is currently in production directing and shooting a documentary feature about the life of a man dying from prostate cancer as well as a documentary series called TRUE. TALK. TALK. DOCS. (coming soon) is a series that shows: while we all carry our individual burdens, we don’t have to do so alone. Each doc highlights people doing something they love—painting, skating, singing, cooking—as they reveal the hardest moments in their lives surrounding circumstances we don’t talk about freely, like death, homelessness, divorce, suicidal ideation, missed opportunities, destructive habits, radical politics and racism. People are complex. The world is complicated. And too often we are made to feel isolated in our pain, only celebrated in our joy. This series brings awareness to those things we bury deep or hide from others (especially on social media), while highlighting those achievements that we feel more comfortable sharing. He has also appeared on stages across the country and globe. His credits include works at renowned The Negro Ensemble Company, Inc. of New York; True Colors Theatre in Atlanta; Huntington Theatre Company in Boston; Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company; Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles; Goodman Theatre in Chicago; and the Pittsburgh Public Theater and Crossroads Theatre Company in New Jersey. While traveling with the Negro Theatre Ensemble, Mr. Lee performed in the Pulitzer Prize-winning” A Soldier’s Play” and numerous other works. In 2019, Lee appeared in the Broadway production of American Son. Also, in 2019, he won the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play (“Two Trains Running,” Arena Stage). Lee is considered a “Wilsonian Warrior” for his many appearances in the works of August Wilson, including the Broadway production of “Gem of the Ocean.” He performed in five of Wilson’s 10 plays at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and in Wilson’s final autobiographical one-man piece “How I Learned What I Learned.” Mr. Lee’s own characters come to life through his plays, including “East Texas Hot Links,” which has been produced on stages from Los Angeles to New York and London’s The Royal Court Theatre and is published by Samuel French, Inc. His other plays include “Fear Itself,” “Somebody Called: A Tale of Two Preachers,” “Killingsworth,” “Lyin’ Ass,” and the musical “Twist.” Lee is Artist in Residence and Artistic Director of the Black and Latino Playwrights Conference at Texas State University where he is also designated Distinguished Alumnus. “The parents—a furious, pent-up Eugene Lee as John Prentice, Sr., and a stoic, frustrated Andrea Frye as Mary Prentice—are excellently played so much so that we begin to realize this play isn’t just about race but also about gender and memory.” Gary Tischler, "The Georgetowner" AMERICAN SON “Mr. Lee’s life-time of performing experience is powerfully evident as he seizes focus while still being part on the ensemble. The enthralling Lee’s folksiness morphs into icy combativeness as the discord amongst him and the Connors intensifies. It’s a supreme display of character acting.” Darryl Reilly, "Theater Scene" AMERICAN SON “And as a police lieutenant who arrives near the end, Eugene Lee makes a powerful figure of a plot device.” If you liked this podcast, shoot me an e-mail at filmmakingconversations@mail.com Also, you can check out my documentary The People of Brixton, on Kwelitv here: www.kweli.tv/programs/the-peopl…xton?autoplay=true Damien Swaby Social Media Links: Instagram www.instagram.com/damien_swaby_video_producer/ Twitter twitter.com/DamienSwaby?ref_src…erp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor Facebook www.facebook.com/Damien-Swaby-213805135363397

Instead of waiting for opportunities to come, October of 2014 (Halloween, to be exact!), I picked up my whole life and moved to the beautiful city of Los Angeles, California. It was nerve-wracking at first, not knowing a single soul or having a job to go to everyday, but I took those nerves and used them to help create who I am. I made the non-traditional decision to not attend college because I knew in my heart I wanted to explore my life and passions the way I needed to. I know that may seem “out there” or unusual to most people, but it was totally natural for me. Now, I am making my own way through the crazy L.A. entertainment scene. On the outside it may look like its all GLITZ and GLAM, but in all honesty there have been many struggles along the way. Learning about this industry has been a wild ride and I continue to discover new things every second of every day. I strive to inspire others – whether in the industry or not – to have courage to stand up for their own beliefs, desires, and aspirations. It doesn’t matter what anyone else says...BElieve in YOUrself. Come along on this wild ride with me while I embark on new adventures and life lessons. She received a BA in Dramatic Arts from the University of Southern California and an MFA in Creative Writing from Hamline University. Her work has garnered awards from Jerome Foundation, Minnesota State Arts Board, Minnesota Film and Television, and others. Maya is dedicated to projects that have a sense of “purpose” in the world, selecting stories that illuminate some aspect of the human experience that is untold, rarely seen, or might benefit from new approaches to issues of diversity and inclusion, primarily in America. On this podcast we discuss her film Through the Banks of the Red Cedar! The story unfolds through the eyes of Maya Washington, Gene's youngest daughter, as she uncovers her father's journey and the impact of this legacy on the present generation. Maya traces her father's footsteps from the segregated South to the North, over the course of a modern football season. As she uncovers both the triumphs and defeats of her father's team, she develops a newly formed appreciation for the game and a deeper connection to her father, just in time to witness MSU Spartan Football team ascend to national prominence 50 years later. The racial demographics seen on the field today are due in large part to Hall of Fame coach Duffy Daugherty’s innovative approach to recruiting African American men from the South to MSU in the 1960s, known as the “Underground Railroad” of college football. The success of MSU’s 1965 and 1966 back-to-back Big Ten and National Champion teams forces America to re-think prejudices that previously kept African American players from earning scholarships or starting positions. The story delves into the triumphs and defeats of Daugherty's integrated team as they finish the season with the historic 1966 "Game of the Century," a 10-10 tie against Notre Dame. Teammates Gene Washington, Bubba Smith , Clinton Jones, and George Webster make history as first round picks in the 1967 draft. Gene Washington and Clinton Jones bring momentum to the Minnesota Vikings, playing in the 1969 Super Bowl alongside legendary teammates Joe Kapp, Alan Page, Carl Eller, Jim Marshall, John Henderson, Oscar Reed, Dave Osborn and Mick Tingelhoff. Maya's interviews with former players recall the highlights of the Minnesota Vikings' "Purple People Eater" years, as well as the racial discrimination black players faced in the league, speaking to the overall impact African American pioneers had on players' rights, including free agency and the right to negotiate salaries. Her appreciation and gratitude for her father grows deeper as together they reveal how what happened 50 years ago is still relevant today. visit www.redcedarmovie.com Awards Minnesota Film & TV LACH Production Reimbursement Grant || Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant || Minnesota State Arts Board Arts Tour Grant || Jerome Foundation MN/NYC Film, Video, and Digital Production Grant || Audience Choice Honorable Mention – MN Made Documentary Feature – MSPIFF || Curated in “Best of Fest” screening for MSPIFF 2018 Official Selection Detroit Free Press Freep Film Festival Louisiana International Film Festival Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival Rochester International Film Festival Bentonville Film festival Color of Conversation Film Series, AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival If you liked this podcast, shoot me an e-mail at filmmakingconversations@mail.com Also, you can check out my documentary The People of Brixton, on Kwelitv here: www.kweli.tv/programs/the-peopl…xton?autoplay=true Damien Swaby Social Media Links: Instagram www.instagram.com/damien_swaby_video_producer/ Twitter twitter.com/DamienSwaby?ref_src…erp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor Facebook www.facebook.com/Damien-Swaby-213805135363397/

In 2018, BRUCE LEE & THE OUTLAW was released, a film which not only draws on her experience of working with difficult subject matters, but also her drama background and passion for story-telling. 'I had the support of the most wonderful editor, Katie Bryer, and I just want to work with her again and again. She cut the film beautifully, and she was my collaborator every step of the journey.' Alex Holmes, director of ‘Maiden’ '...it’s the plentiful on-board material, excitingly structured and paced by doc veteran Holmes with editor Katie Bryer, that lends “Maiden” great immediacy, suspense, and rooting value' Dennis Harvey reviews ‘Maiden’, Variety '...what distinguishes the documentary apart from its countless genre-mates is the pacing, which is constructed in a sleek, flawless fashion and blurs by without an inkling of a dull moment. The film is distinctly barebones with hardly a minute wasted.' Jonathan Christian reviews ‘Maiden’, The Playlist “Katie was a vital part of this project from day one. She has a fantastic sense of story and a strong sensitivity when it comes to dealing with difficult issues and vulnerable protagonists. Virunga would not have turned into the film it did without Katie’s input throughout the filmmaking process” Orlando von Einsiedel, director of Oscar nominated ‘Virunga’ “She has a great eye for story and for detail, and often editors can only see one, not the other. Editing is a conversation – with the Director and with the audience, and Katie is one of the world’s great conversationalists. He has been the director of photography on some of my favorite films, “Monster Ball,” and “Stranger Than Fiction,” and “Quantum of Solace” featuring Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, Judy Dench, and Gemma Arterton. Roberto has been extremely kind to find time in his busy schedule to talk about his work and the visual turn that the iconic series took with his decisions as a cinematographer. On this podcast, we speak about: Roberto being the first cinematographer to use an Arri Alexa instead of Panavision, for a James Bond movie. Testing the first Red One camera. Everyone in the industry being upset with Red at the beginning, coming out of nowhere. “They weren’t one of the old school.” Roberto Schaefer. Halle Berry didn’t hold back, a very giving actor. “Even if you’re shooting on film, everything goes on a digital domain so now, the latitude is there, and there is so much you can do in post, you can change everything.” Roberto Schaefer. Being a part off the ASC. Specific crews don’t have the background for major Hollywood films. Why Roberto Schaefer is against giving out awards - we win as a team. “I’m convinced there are so many actors, writers, and cinematographers that never get what they want because they are in the wrong place.” Roberto Schaefer If you liked this podcast, shoot me an e-mail at filmmakerswaby@hotmail.com Also, you can check out my documentary The People of Brixton, on Kwelitv here: www.kweli.tv/programs/the-peopl…xton?autoplay=true Damien Swaby Social Media Links: Instagram www.instagram.com/damien_swaby_video_producer/ Twitter https://twitter.com/DamienSwaby?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Damien-Swaby-213805135363397/

James Cameron is the Director of award winning films Titanic, Avatar, Terminator. "Just do it. Just pick up a camera and start shooting something." In total, Cameron's directorial efforts have grossed approximately US$2 billion in North America and US$6 billion worldwide. Not adjusted for inflation, Cameron's Avatar and Titanic are the second and third highest-grossing films of all time at $2.78 billion and $2.19 billion respectively. Cameron also holds the distinction of having directed the first two of the five films in history to gross over $2 billion worldwide (the latter three being Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame). Luckily I got to speak to Bill Duke! Film director and actor Bill Duke was born on February 26, 1943 in Poughkeepsie, New York and is the son of Ethel Douglas Duke and William Duke, Sr. After earning his A.A. degree from Dutchess Community College, Duke became interested in the performing arts while attending Boston University, although he initially enrolled as a pre-med student. He eventually majored in theater there and then went on to earn a M.A. degree in fine arts from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Duke later enrolled in the American Film Institute (AFI). Duke began his career as an actor in New York City theaters like The Public Theater and New Federal Theater, performing in plays such as LeRoi Jones' Slave Ship and Melvin Van Peebles’ musical Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death. Duke’s first movie role came in 1976 when he portrayed a fierce young Black Muslim revolutionary named “Abdullah Mohammed Akbar” in Car Wash. Duke’s television directorial debut came in 1982 when he directed episodes of Knot's Landing, Falcon Crest, and Flamingo Road for Lorimar Productions. Duke's most prominent and critically acclaimed television work, however, has been his direction of teleplays for the PBS series American Playhouse including “The Killing Floor,” “A Raisin in the Sun,” and “The Meeting,” a 90-minute drama that depicted an imaginary meeting between Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X. During the 1980s, Duke amassed more than 100 television directing credits, including more than 70 episodes of roughly 20 television series such as Miami Vice, Dallas, Crime Story, Cagney and Lacey and Hill Street Blues. Duke directed his first feature film in 1990, a film adaptation of Chester Himes' novel A Rage in Harlem. Duke went on to direct many other films including Deep Cover, Sister Act 2, Hoodlum and Deacons for Defense. In 2004, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed Duke to the California Film Commission, which works to enhance the economic climate of the state by keeping film industry jobs in California. Duke also works with non-profit and charity organizations such as Educating Young Minds, an organization that helps inner-city students excel at school and in life. Duke is the recipient of numerous awards including the AFI’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the NAACP’s Special Award for Outstanding Achievement, SCLC’s Drum Major for Justice Film Award and a Cable Ace Award. President Bill Clinton appointed Duke to the National Endowment for the Humanities. Dating back to the 1970s, Duke has appeared in a number of popular films, including Car Wash, American Gigolo, Commando, Predator, and X-Men: The Last Stand. Fewer still might be aware of Duke’s extraordinary accomplishments off-screen—as a talented director, producer, entrepreneur, and humanitarian. Carl Orlsen - A fine art painter, photographer, podcaster and filmmaker

Carl Olson is a fine art painter, photographer, and filmmaker. He became a fine art painter much later in life. The interest had always been there; however, painting remained in the background mostly as a hobby while he ran a successful web-based design and content production company. He and his team wrote software that glued together the intricate processes of businesses and commerce. Striving for the utmost in software quality and reliability, he envisioned each line of code as if it were a finely executed brush stroke of luscious oil paint in a masterpiece. After running his business several decades, Carl now focuses on creating fine art. Oil paint, canvas, and his easel have replaced the command line and software development tools he used for so many years. When working with clients, Carl always sought opportunities to express himself creatively. One such accomplishment was the opportunity to design the award-winning album cover for Trust, by musician Patrick O’Hearn. The album was nominated for a Grammy and received the “Best Album Cover Design” award from the National Association of Independent Record Distributors. Carl is also known as a filmmaker. Along with cinematographer Rick Delgado, Carl recently completed a beautiful and poignant documentary about the story of a local artisan who works with his hands to create beautiful works of art by turning wood on a lathe. The documentary is titled One of a Kind - Analog Made. Embracing the medium of podcasting, Carl produces two popular podcasts: Artful Camera is a podcast about digital and analog photography and filmmaking. This podcast has remained in Apple iTunes’ top 200 podcasts in the visual arts category for nearly 9 years. The other podcast Carl produces is the recently launched Artful Painter - art lessons for artists, collectors and people who love art. It features interviews with several internationally known artists. Carl has studied with renowned landscape oil painters Matt Smith and Ralph O’Berg - both who are members of the Plein Air Painters of America group. Carl has also attended many lectures and demonstrations by artists Clyde Aspevig, Len Chmiel, Jill Carver, Dan Young, Kenn Backhaus, and Skip Whitcomb. Carl’s artwork was recently featured in a month long exhibit at the Vine Cafe and Market located in Douglasville, Georgia. Several of Carl’s water lily series were recently on display at the Douglas County Museum of History and Art, also located in Douglasville. Carl paints both outdoors and in the studio. He is drawn to the landscape and its vibrant textures and colors. Up close his landscapes appear abstract–expressed with thick impasto applied with both brush and knife. His paintings are a celebration of the subject and the medium. He feels that art should richly illuminate the heart with beauty. I really enjoyed speaking to Carl. It was his podcast that influenced me to produce my own.
