In “Lessons from the Tent,” Alex Rivera builds on the quiet depth of God's presence in everyday moments. Speaking to students and staff, he draws from the imagery of the tent of meeting to explore themes of obedience, stillness, and spiritual attentiveness. Through reflective storytelling and scriptural insight, Alex encourages the campus community to slow down, listen closely, and recognize that some of life's most transformative lessons happen not on the mountaintop—but in the tent.
In “Practice the Presence of God,” Alex Rivera guides students and staff through a powerful reflection rooted in Psalm 16, Exodus 33, and John 15. Drawing from David's declaration, “I keep my eyes always on the Lord… because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken,” the message invites listeners into a daily awareness of God's nearness. Rivera weaves in Moses' plea—“If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here”—to emphasize dependence, and Jesus' call to “remain in me” as the source of lasting fruit. It's a rich, Scripture-soaked call to walk with God in every moment.
Alex Rivera, known for his heartfelt and thoughtful approach to Scripture, shares a unique perspective in “Friendship in the Tent.” Speaking to students and staff, he reflects on the moment in Exodus when “the Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend,” inviting listeners to see friendship as something sacred. It's a gentle yet powerful call to nurture meaningful relationships—with each other and with God—through presence, trust, and shared space.

The Orocovis municipality, which is in the Central Mountain Range in Puerto Rico, is an area hard to reach in the mountainous part of the island because of washed out and unstable roadways. Join us on a profound journey in the latest episode of The Radio Vagabond, as we conclude the NomadMania educational tour of Ukraine. Our adventure begins in the suburb of Irpin, near Kyiv, where echoes of past conflicts and strategic defences tell a story of resilience and survival. The remains of a crucial bridge, destroyed to halt the advance of Russian forces, mark the stark reality of war. As we move to Bucha, the ambiance shifts dramatically. Orest Zub, our guide and organizer, narrates the transition from Irpin to Bucha, underscoring the distinct stories each town holds within the larger narrative of the conflict. Bucha, a town tragically transformed from a peaceful suburb to a witness of war atrocities, presents a somber picture of the invasion's impact. Here, we confront the aftermath of occupation and the brutal reality of civilians caught in the crossfire. The silent streets of Bucha, once bustling with life, now bear witness to the violence that swept through the town. Orest shares the harrowing details of civilian casualties, with about 600 local residents reported killed. The Church of St. Andrew stands as a poignant memorial, with a mass grave and commemorations for each victim, including children tragically caught in the violence. Inside the Church of St. Andrew, a heart-wrenching photo exhibition brings the tragedy of Bucha into sharp focus. Images of abandoned bicycles, a loyal dog beside its fallen owner, and lifeless hands clutching groceries paint a vivid picture of the town's ordeal. These photographs, capturing moments of untold stories and lives cut short, emphasize the need for accountability and justice on a global stage. Our journey continues to Lviv, where the atmosphere is a blend of anticipation and reflection. The city bustles with life, offering a stark contrast to the war-torn regions we've visited. The visit to a military cemetery in Lviv becomes a powerful moment of contemplation. Here, we walk amongst the graves of fallen soldiers, each marked with a photo, reminding us of the personal cost of war. Orest Zub explains the significance of these photographs, highlighting the youth and unfulfilled potential of those who lost their lives. On the last night, we gather for a unique sharing session. Travelers from diverse backgrounds, including Gustav Rosted, Max Layerer, Per Besson, Mette Ehlers Mikkelsen, Alex Rivera, Khadija Musa, Ed Hotchkiss, Kim Borup Frederiksen, Lee Sandberg, Tony Wang, Allan Have Larsen and Petro Marais, share their reflections on the Ukrainian spirit, the resilience observed, and the emotional roller coaster of the trip. Each adding a unique perspective to the collective narrative. Their words paint a vivid picture of a nation's struggle, resilience, and the indomitable hope of its people. As we conclude this remarkable journey through Ukraine, I share my plans for the upcoming year. The focus will be on producing more travel episodes, balancing the narratives of other digital nomads and travelers. I encourage you to support and spread the word about The Radio Vagabond. With a wish for a happy Christmas and a festive New Year, we close this chapter of our journey, ready to embark on new adventures in 2024. My name is Palle Bo, and as always, I gotta keep moving. See you in the next year, with more stories, more travels, and more insights from around the world. Blogpost and pictures: TheRadioVagabond.com/290-Ukraine

Born and raised in Montebello, California, Chelsea Rendon has been a working actress since the age of six. Her first role was a lead in the feature film No Turning Back. Recipient of a Young Latinos In Hollywood award, Chelsea has been known to portray dominant roles for over a decade. Most recently, she is recognized for her role as a young “woke” activist ‘Mari' in STARZ's hit drama Vida. Chelsea was also nominated for her work in Vida for the Imagen Awards for Best Supporting Actress (2020). One of the fan favorites, Chelsea's character is from the Eastside of LA where Chelsea herself grew up. Equally as dedicated to film, Chelsea has brought her talents to Disney's McFarland, USA, and the Oscar-nominated film A Better Life. She can also be seen in Netflix's original hit Bright alongside Will Smith and Netflix horror film Thriller. Chelsea recently starred in the immigration drama, The Infiltrators. The film mixed documentary with narrative dramatization premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in early 2019. Directed and produced by Alex Rivera and Cristina Ibarra, the film centers on a small group of young undocumented immigrants who embark on a high-risk mission inside America's for-profit detention system in order to set people free. Teaming up again with Bright director, David Ayer, Chelsea stars in the gritty American crime thriller, The Tax Collector (August 2020), alongside Shia LaBeouf, Lana Parilla, and George Lopez.

This one really hit my soul. I went to junior high and high school with Alex. I've gotten to know him over 3 hours of calls to discuss this podcast. It's been eye opening. This one with Alex Rivera representing Castroville, and a whole lot more is the best way I can think of to start season 2, episode 1. Check it out and be ready for a story you hear in a blue moon. Alex doesn't sell products he sells dreams. He also came from a family where his mom had to work picking in the strawberry fields till 5 and then go to her custodian job. He still made it out to be a dream seller resulting in kids like Sahid Valenzuela getting a full ride to Cal State Fullerton and drafted by the Oakland A's. Lot's more to tell this Friday on Stream Yard. If you give this podcast 5 minutes you'll at least listen to 20.

THE INFILTRATORS is a docu-thriller that tells the true story of young immigrants who are detained by Border Patrol and thrown into a shadowy for-profit detention center— on purpose. Marco and Viri are members of the National Immigrant Youth Alliance, a group of radical DREAMers who are on a mission to stop unjust deportations. And the best place to stop deportations, they believe, is in detention. However, when Marco and Viri attempt a daring reverse ‘prison break,’ things don’t go according to plan. By weaving together documentary footage of the real infiltrators with re-enactments of the events inside the detention center, THE INFILTRATORS tells an incredible and thrilling true story in a genre-defying new cinematic language. Co-directors Cristina Ibarra and Alex Rivera joins for a conversation on dire conditions that wait detainees , the cruelty of a system designed to frustrate people with legitimate reasons for remaining in the United States and their respect for the people who willingly put their lives and futures on the line for the sake of others. For news and updates go to: theinfiltrators.oscilloscope.net or infiltratorsfilm.com About the filmmakers: Alex Rivera is an award-winning filmmaker who tells visually adventurous stories. His first feature film, SLEEP DEALER, won the screenwriting award at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, was screened at the Museum of Modern Art, and had a commercial release around the world. In 2015 Alex was awarded support from the Surdna Foundation and the Ford Foundation for The Infiltrators. Cristina Ibarra has been making award-winning films that explore the U.S.-Mexico border for the past seventeen years. The New York Times calls her documentary LAS MARTHAS “a striking alternative portrait of border-town life.” Her PBS documentary collaboration, THE LAST CONQUISTADOR, The Last Conquistador, had a national broadcast on POV. Another week in isolation come and gone, with no end in site for my neck of the woods in South Florida. While we're all looking for entertainment and information, today, we'll feature both. The film "The Infiltrators" opens nationally today via Virtual Cinema. The award-winning film is based here in Broward County FL, at the Broward Transitional Center as undocumented immigrants were held awaiting deportation. We'll speak with the film's director and writer Alex Rivera. And Joe Biden finally addressed Tara Reade's charges this morning. All that and more on today's show.
Welcome to our third virtual episode How Do You Like it So Far? fans! We are shocked we even remembered that since who even knows what day it is. Satur-Thurs-Wednesday? That sounds about right. Firstly, we hope you are all staying inside and safe during such uncertain times. Secondly, we’ve got a new episode for you all! This week, Henry and Colin welcome Alex Rivera, Director of Sleep Dealer and The Infiltrators, a hybrid-documentary that blends together traditional documentary elements with scripted reenactments. Through The Infiltrators, he explores what happens when people put political pressure from the bottom up and as these individuals choose to disrupt history rather than line up with it. Listen in as Rivera discusses his own origin story and how his work in border and immigration issues ranged from experimental and traditional documentaries, to traditional shorts and features to music videos and mockumentaries. He also discusses his other works, specifically Sleep Dealer, and some thoughtful insights and suggestions for future filmmakers.

We're joined by our resident New York, smart phone, and helicopter expert, Alex Rivera (@carlsice on IG). We talk about Adam Sandler's dramatic work, the Safdie's use of non actors, and mostly Julia Fox for an hour and a half. In 2012, two young activists from the National Immigrant Youth Alliance went on an undercover mission to infiltrate the Broward Transitional Center, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Florida. NIYA had been contacted by the son of a man named Claudio Rojas, who was taken from his home by immigration agents and brought to Broward. NIYA has been compared to ACT UP; its members try to force confrontations with authorities over immigration policy. The two activists, who are themselves undocumented, pretended to be newly arrived, confused immigrants who spoke little English. They got themselves arrested by somewhat perplexed Border Patrol agents. The story of those activists is told in a new film called “The Infiltrators,” which recently showed at the Sundance Festival and South by Southwest. It is a kind of quasi-documentary, the directors Cristina Ibarra and Alex Rivera tell David Remnick; because they were not able to film inside the ICE facility, they staged a reënactment of the events inside a decommissioned mental hospital. Rojas, who had been released from detention after staging a hunger strike, advised the production for verisimilitude. But after the movie’s release, Rojas was suddenly re-detained during a routine check-in with ICE, which he attended with his lawyer. “For eight years I presented myself for supervision visits,” Rojas tells The New Yorker’s Camila Osorio, speaking on the phone from detention. “Why didn’t they detain me before? . . . I am completely sure that this is a reprisal against me, that they want to deport me no matter what.” Note: In regard to Rojas’s suspicion of retaliation on the part of ICE, a spokesman for the agency sent this statement after the story went to air: “ICE detains individuals according to federal law and makes custody decisions based upon the facts of their case. Any accusation that ICE uses retaliatory tactics is patently false.”

On this week’s podcast, Cymene and Dominic recap their time at the marvelous Petrocultures 2018 event in Glasgow and tell tales of adventures with quinoa sandwiches and Buckfast, a curious liquor better known locally as “stab-yer-pal.” Then (13:25) we offer another edition of our Soylent Rainbow segment, talking classic ecofilms that you’ve recommended to us. This time it’s Alex Rivera’s 2008 cult film, Sleep Dealer, which brilliantly imagines a dystopian future of militarized water, reality TV drone killings and cyberlabor as the United States has invented a new way to exploit Mexican labor power without allowing workers’ bodies to cross borders. It’s a film in many ways ahead of its time that deserves a watch in 2018. We talk about its many strengths but also what we might do differently if the film were remade today. Speaking of which, Charlie Brooker, if you are out there, this is a Black Mirror episode waiting to happen!!

Playing for Team Human today is digital media artist, activist, and filmmaker Alex Rivera. Known for his acclaimed 2008 feature film, Sleep Dealer, Rivera's work explores the contradictions of a free-flowing globalized economy and the simultaneous stigmatizing of immigrant laborers and erecting of border walls. Together, Rivera and Douglas Rushkoff interrogate the rhetoric of the digital "global village." We'll learn about what Rivera calls "Dronification," a highly connected, yet ever-more alienated digital subjectivity. Rivera and Rushkoff then discuss how we might restore true human connection and build bottom-up solidarity, or what the Zapatistas call "globalization from below."In today's intro monologue Rushkoff considers the need for both empowering local, grassroots organizing as well as fortifying public structures that bring the benefit of mutual aid and collectivity up to scale. This episode closes with a song from Team Human co-producer/editor Stephen Bartolomei, entitled Kill Floor Rebellion. It's a song "that celebrates border crossers and migrant workers, inspired by the true story of the Kill Floor Rebellion."Inspired by this episode?
M's beat the A's and we have the highlights. Alex Rivera, Josh Kerns and Mike Curto are all a part of the program.
