Why PCOS Isn't Just About “Fixing Your Hormones” (And What Actually Matters Instead)So many of us are handed the same generic advice when it comes to PCOS, “just balance your hormones” or “go on the pill.” But what if the story is so much deeper than that?In this episode, I sit down with Rohini, a registered associate nutritionist and one of the clearest voices in the space, to talk about what's actually going on behind the scenes with PCOS, and why hormone health doesn't look the same for every woman. This isn't about “quick fixes.” It's about real physiology, individual nuance, and understanding how your body is speaking to you.We explore:What we get wrong about PCOS (and why so many feel gaslit by their doctors)Why “hormone balance” isn't a real goal and what to focus on insteadHow stress, nutrition, and nervous system health impact PCOSHow to advocate for yourself inside a healthcare system that often misses the markWhy so many women are misdiagnosed — and how to navigate conflicting adviceUnderstanding your symptoms through the lens of function, not failureThe importance of cycle literacy for every stage of lifeHow diet culture confuses PCOS care — and what sustainable support actually looks likeTips for getting the most from your GP appointment or specialist consultHow plant-based approaches can support (not replace) root-cause healingWhether you've just been diagnosed or you've been managing PCOS for years, this episode will help you feel seen, informed, and empowered to approach things differently.About Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder worldwide, affecting at least 1 in 10 women, non-binary and transgender people. It is the number one cause of infertility with symptoms including acne, excess weight gain, irregular periods and hair loss and higher risk of long-term complications such as type 2 diabetes and womb cancer. Alarmingly, 3 in 4 of those with PCOS remain undiagnosed because of the complex nature of the condition. *The information shared in this podcast is for informational and educational purposes only; it is not a substitute for medical advice or individualised care from a qualified health professional. Connect with RohiniGet your copy of Living PCOS Free: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Living-PCOS-Free-hormonal-Polycystic/dp/1781612137My website: www.rohinibajekal.com My Substack: Full of Beans https://rohinibajekal.substack.com/Follow me on Instagram @rohinibajekal RCOG (2014):  Long-term consequences of polycystic ovary syndrome: https://www.rcog.org.uk/globalassets/documents/guidelines/gtg_33.pdfESHRE: Partner Guideline: International Evidence-based Guideline for the Assessment and Management of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome 2023. Copyright Monash University, Melbourne Australia 2023: https://www.ese-hormones.org/publications/directory/partner-guideline-international-evidence-based-guideline-for-the-assessment-and-management-of-polycystic-ovary-syndrome-2023/NICE guidelines: https://cks.nice.org.uk/topics/polycystic-ovary-syndrome/American College of Lifestyle Medicine: https://www.lifestylemedicine.org/Scientific-EvidenceFree factsheet on PCOS from Dr Nitu Bajekal: https://nitubajekal.com/pcos/Free downloadable PCOS Factsheet from Plant-Based Health Professonals UK: https://plantbasedhealthprofessionals.com/wp-content/uploads/PCOS-factsheet-210709.pdfSubscribe & Follow the PodcastIf this conversation brought you value, made you think, or gave you language to share with someone else — consider leaving a review, sharing it with a friend, or hitting follow. Welcome to TeachStrong Talks podcast, a place for real conversations about effective well-being for school staff! Our guest today is Dr Nitu Bajekal. Nitu is a consultant Gynaecologist who specialises in Women's Health. She has over 35 years of clinical experience and provides medical and holistic care for women with a variety of health concerns. In 2014, Nitu set up “Women for Women's Health” - a voluntary service to empower women of all ages to make lifestyle choices that will help improve their own health and that of their families and friends through education. Nitu has also written a book with her daughter Rohini (a previous guest on the show!) called "Living PCOS Free", as well as multiple articles for publications like Cosmopolitan, The Independent and Huffington Post. Around ¾ of teachers are female, however advice and guidance around health and well-being amongst school staff often fails to address specific issues that women may be going through. The aim of today's podcast is to unpick the information around some of the most common topics affecting women today and then explore lifestyle approaches that Nitu has seen first hand work to help relieve or treat them. We chat to Nitu about the causes and symptoms of : Painful periods Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) Menopause And the advice that she offers to manage these conditions. This is a longer episode than normal but a real masterclass in women's health. Ep. 59 – DR NITU BAJEKAL– The Case for a Plant-Based Diet – 2-PART CHALLENGE

Coming from a completely unbiased place of having been both vegetarian and omnivore, and seeing, feeling and understanding the benefits of both, I wanted to create a 2 part series where we really get to the bottom of whether or not one is healthier, or whether, like with all things when it comes to healthcare, it's a personalised approach based on each person's requirements, and this is the first in that 2-part series.   My passion is to provide people with information that they might not have access to otherwise; for people to be able to make decisions from a place of informed choice; to be able to break apart conflicting information to make the right decisions for you and your family and that was my intention with this series as there never seems to be a definitive answer on whether plant-based or some organic animal produce in the diet are healthier. It goes without saying that ethically, we know that plant-based living would help the planet and is kinder to animals, but I wanted to put that aside so that we could be totally undistracted by anything other than which is healthier.   Dr Nitu Bajekal is a plant-based women's health OB/GYN and speaks here about why she feels plant-based eating is the absolute healthiest option for everyone.   I did not agree with some of what Dr Bajekal was advocating, for example eating non-organic soy (or any soy), foods fortified with synthetic vitamins, and a lot of her views on allopathic healthcare. However, I respect her views and respect her as a source of information within the plant-based world, and the episode is brought to you as it was recorded in order not to censor anyone's views simply because they may differ from my own.   Make sure to tune back in next week when we discuss the other side, with Dr Stephanie Rimka.   Articles mentioned: MTHFR – The Gene Mutation That Could Harm Your Unborn Baby https://www.laurenvaknine.co.uk/2015/05/21/mthfr/ Your Genes Are Not Your Destiny https://www.laurenvaknine.co.uk/2018/06/29/wddty/   I'M RUNNING A *FREE* WEBINAR TRAINING WORKSHOP ON HOW TO FIX THE BROKEN RELATIONSHIPS IN YOUR LIFE TO LIVE THE LIFE YOU DREAM OF, ON AUGUST 23RD 2021 AT 7.30PM GMT. The Health Gap is a brand-new podcast from South West Londoner about all things women's health. Presented and produced by journalists Lucy Carr, Emily-Jane Heap, Kirsten Grant and Madison Bentley, this series will explore gender inequalities across the UK health services. Each week will see The Health Gap hosts talk with experts to demystify concerns surrounding women's health issues, debunk age-old misconceptions about the female body, and bring to light the issue of misdiagnosis and dismissal of women's symptoms. This week's episode focuses on how the COVID-19 pandemic has magnified gender inequalities in the healthcare system. Topics of discussion include the widespread panic triggered by the AstraZeneca vaccine's potential to cause blood clots, versus the lack of discourse surrounding the Pill, which carries a comparatively higher risk of causing the same life-threatening issue. This week's episode of The Health Gap welcomes special guests Dr Elinor Cleghorn and Dr Nitu Bajekal. Dr Elinor Cleghorn is a feminist cultural historian who specialises in the history of medicine, focusing particularly on how those histories relate to women's bodies and illnesses. Dr Nitu Bajekal is a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist with over 35 years of clinical experience in women's health.
