There are many things that can impact your ability to become pregnant. In today's episode, I'm reviewing the top 10 things to consider if you are TTC. 1. Environmental Toxins. Avoid microwaving food in plastic containers or bottles. Always store food and glass or stainless steel containers. Million Marker offers a test to find out if you have in-body toxicity. 2. Chemicals in food and everyday products. Verify that the products you are using are chemical free. You can do that on https://www.ewg.org/ 3. Being sedentary. The CDC and American College of OBGYN, both recommend exercise in amounts of 150 minutes per week. Avoid over exercising, as low BMI can also cause fertility issues. 4. Food allergies or intolerances. Work with a nutritionist to find out if you have a food allergy or other food intolerance. You may also want to consider working with a specialist if you have PCOS or working with a nutritionist like Rohini Bajekal to help you manage PCOS if you have it. 5. Blocked Fallopian Tubes. Check with your doctor to find out if this is what may be causing you to have a hard time TTC. 6. THC and Cannabinoids can affect the motility of the fallopian tube and the receptors in the lining of the uterus. This makes embryo implantation harder and it might not happen as quickly as you would want. 7. Nicotine. Nicotine can affect the DNA and the egg in the sperm cells, and it can also affect a woman's fertility such that she could go potentially into menopause earlier. 8. Blaming birth control pills. Many people think that birth control pills "cause" infertility, but the truth is that because they regulate your period they may be masking the indicators of infertility. Make sure you get your hormone levels checked with your doctor every year to confirm your levels. 9. Ignoring biology. Every woman is born with a finite number of eggs, and if you want to wait to have kids until later in life, be sure and freeze your eggs when you are in your 20s. 10. Not getting enough sleep. Is your pregnancy test negative, again? Let's get real. It sucks when we do everything we can in our power to make something happen, and it just doesn't. If you've ever wanted to get pregnant, and have seen a negative result on the test, you know exactly what I'm talking about. It doesn't matter if it's one month of trying or 2 years…. "Trying to get pregnant" can be painful, and the phrase itself is defeatist. The mindset it establishes is one based on fear vs. love. I like to lead from a place of love, and encourage my patients to think positively. For that reason, I advocate for replacing it with, "preparing for pregnancy." Doesn't it just sound more peaceful, and open to the process? I think so. Regardless if you are on board with my line of thinking, I do want to share some helpful tips and suggestions so that your path to pregnancy is as informed and efficient as possible. Here are my top tips: My #1 tip for preparing for pregnancy is to NOT put blind faith in fertility apps. Tip #2: Develop a resilient, and positive mindset. Tip #3: Make use of science (diagnostic testing) to understand what could be preventing you from getting pregnant. Oh, and ask questions. Lots of them! Tip #4: Talk to your doctor about things you can do that are in your control like lifestyle and diet. Read the full show notes on Dr. Aimee's website. Struggling with fertility is not easy. It's important to stay positive. For example, I like to think of you being IN-fertile. As in you're "in" the club vs. infertile meaning you're "not" fertile. Call me crazy, but I truly believe in the fertility of everyone who walks through my door. Nobody is a number or FSH or AMH level. What do those things even mean? That's what I want to talk to you today.
Lynn Jensen is a yoga expert, and she created the "Yoga for Fertility"program in 2002, after dealing with her own fertility challenges for several years. She practiced yoga while trying to conceive, and noticed that it had many benefits: it gave her more resilience, and helped with her mindset while going through fertility treatment. She wanted to take what she learned to help other women who are trying to conceive, and I could not be more excited to have her joining me on the podcast today! In addition to talking about the best poses for boosting your fertility, how yoga for fertility is different than regular yoga, and also she shares thoughts on why yoga can help anyone who is TTC: "Yoga can help shift your mindset to one where instead of this is something being "achieved," (we're trying to 'achieve' this pregnancy,) that actually what we're trying to do is receive. That's a very different mindset and a very different way to approach it." Amanda Troxler has been practicing family formation law since 2013. She represents hundreds of Intended Parents, Donors, and Surrogates a year. Additionally, Amanda has personal experience in third party assisted reproduction, having been an egg donor. In today's show we are going to explain what family formation law is. As a fertility patient, it's important that you understand some of the basic legal pieces that you might want to have in place for your journey, whether that be for IVF, or if you're going to be using donor eggs, donor sperm, or using a gestational carrier. I very much love Amanda's thoughtful and caring approach to making family formation law approachable. As she says, "healthy families are formed through honest communication and centering the needs of the future child." Amanda received her J.D. from UCLA law on a Dean's Merit Scholarship in 2012. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Northwestern University in 2008. Amanda is a member of the Academy of California Adoption-ART Lawyers ("ACAL"), Society for Ethics in Egg Donation and Surrogacy ("SEEDS"), and American Society of Reproductive Medicine ("ASRM"). There are so many misconceptions about genetic screening. Unfortunately, this leads people to make uninformed decisions about testing, and it results in people just not doing enough of it. This is why I invited a fertility expert who has dedicated a lot of her research life to this very topic. I am so excited to have Dr. Nidhee Sachdev of OC Fertility join me on The Egg Whisperer Show to talk about genetic screening. Have you ever used Google Maps and been redirected midway via a better route? Think about this show as your personalized navigation tool for fertility and IVF, as Dr. Aimee shares the five things you need to know before, during, and after IVF to support yourself. 1. Be clear on why you're considering IVF. Why are you doing IVF? 2. Realize your relationships may change. This is something I ask my patients to think about before, during, and after IVF. 3. In this episode, I'm thrilled to welcome Hana Janebdar, co-founder and CEO of Juno Bio, all the way from London to discuss a topic I consider the new frontier in women's health: the vaginal microbiome. Hana brings incredible expertise with her background in biology and biochemical engineering from Imperial College London, and she's pioneering research that's closing the gender health gap. We dive into what the vaginal microbiome actually is, why it matters for your fertility journey, and how this community of bacteria and yeast living in your body can impact everything from IVF success rates to unexplained infertility. Read the full show notes on Dr. Aimee's website Throughout our conversation, Hana and I explore the fascinating connection between vaginal health and fertility outcomes, including the shocking statistic that women with disrupted vaginal microbiomes fail IVF 91% of the time. We discuss how bacterial imbalances can contribute to conditions like pelvic inflammatory disease and tubal factor infertility and why having a blocked tube doesn't automatically mean you had an STI. Hana shares how Juno Bio's at-home comprehensive vaginal microbiome test works, what you can learn from it, and the personalized treatment options available. This is essential information for anyone trying to conceive or optimize their reproductive health. In this episode, we cover: What the vaginal microbiome is and why 56% of your cells are actually microbial, not human How disrupted vaginal microbiomes impact IVF success rates and can cause a 91% failure rate The connection between vaginal bacteria and tubal factor infertility beyond STIs Why blocked fallopian tubes don't always mean you had a sexually transmitted infection How Juno Bio's at-home vaginal microbiome test works and what it reveals about your health Treatment options for vaginal microbiome imbalances, from antibiotics to targeted probiotics Why you should never douche and how your vagina is like a self-cleaning oven Resources:You can find out more about Juno Bio and Hana here: https://www.juno.bio/ Do you have questions about IVF? In this episode of The Egg Whisperer Show, I'm diving into the ten things I tell my fertility patients to stop doing every single day in my practice. As a fertility specialist who's been working with patients for years, I've noticed certain patterns and behaviors that can make the fertility journey more stressful than it needs to be. Whether you're just starting fertility treatments, in the middle of IVF, or trying to conceive naturally, this episode is packed with practical, science-based advice that will help you navigate this process with less stress and more confidence. I'm sharing the real talk about everything from baby showers to coffee consumption, and yes, even the prescription for ejaculation that sounds silly coming from a doctor's mouth but is scientifically valid. Read the full show notes and transcript on Dr. Aimee's website Throughout this episode, I explore the physical, emotional, and lifestyle factors that impact fertility treatment success. I discuss why it's okay to set boundaries, how to optimize sperm health, what you really need to know about exercise during IVF, and why that cup of coffee you've been avoiding is actually perfectly fine. My goal is to help you feel empowered to make informed decisions, reduce unnecessary stress, and approach your fertility journey with a positive mental attitude. I want you to stop doing things that don't serve you and start focusing on what actually matters for your fertility success. In this episode, we cover: Why you should skip baby showers and learn to say no without guilt during fertility treatment The truth about alcohol consumption during fertility treatments and when moderation is okay Exercise guidelines before and after egg retrieval, and why listening to your body is crucial Why abstaining from sex during fertility treatment is actually counterproductive and how frequent ejaculation improves sperm quality The importance of keeping your fertility journey private and choosing your support circle carefully How to choose sperm-friendly lubricants and avoid products that harm fertility Why stress about stress is unnecessary and how to build your fertility support team The impact of heat exposure on male fertility and why "cooking your balls" is a real concern Why you don't need to give up coffee during fertility treatment and the science behind caffeine consumption The power of positive mental attitude (PMA) and stopping negative thinking patterns Do you have questions about IVF? In this second part of my conversation with Dr. Lucky Sekhon, we dive deeper into what it really means to understand your fertility journey: not just the science, but the emotional and psychological landscape that comes with it. Dr. Lucky is a double board-certified reproductive endocrinologist and the author of The Lucky Egg, a book born from her own IVF experience and years of supporting thousands of patients. Her approach is refreshingly honest: she acknowledges what we know, what we don't know, and how luck plays a role in the deeply personal process of growing your family. Read the full show notes on Dr. Aimee's website. In this episode, we cover: How understanding the fundamentals of reproductive biology helps you make calmer, more informed decisions during treatment The role of luck in fertility and why surrendering control over the unknowns is helpful in maintaining mental health How to mentally prepare for the hardest moments in IVF, like waiting for embryo updates after egg retrieval Why the "Fertility Goddess Lifestyle" is actually about rejecting perfectionism and the culture of shame around fertility The importance of compartmentalization and taking things one step at a time in the present moment, instead of planning 10 steps ahead How to stay hopeful and grounded while remaining realistic about your fertility journey Resources: Dr. Lucky Sekhon's book: The Lucky Egg (on Amazon) Dr. Lucky Sekhon on Instagram: @lucky.sekhon Website: theluckyegg.com Do you have questions about IVF? I'm thrilled to welcome Dr. Meredith Provost to The Egg Whisperer Show for an essential conversation about weight, exercise, and fertility. Dr. Provost brings an incredible background to this discussion: she's a reproductive endocrinologist at Indiana Fertility Institute with degrees from NC State, McMaster University, and a PhD from Cambridge in the history and philosophy of science. As a former Division I volleyball player and athlete herself, she uniquely understands both the science and the practical realities of maintaining health while trying to conceive. Her approach is refreshingly balanced and evidence-based, making her the perfect expert to tackle these often-confusing topics. Read the full show notes on Dr. Aimee's website In this episode, we dive deep into how weight impacts fertility for both women and men, exploring the hormonal mechanisms behind these connections. Dr. Provost shares her compassionate, non-restrictive approach to helping patients optimize their health without extreme measures or body shaming. We discuss realistic dietary recommendations, the role of BMI in fertility outcomes, and what exercise is safe during different stages of fertility treatment, from IUI cycles to egg freezing, IVF, and early pregnancy. Her philosophy of "fertility is a marathon, not a race" resonates throughout our conversation, offering hope and practical guidance for anyone on their fertility journey. In this episode, we cover: How weight affects the communication between your brain and ovaries, impacting ovulation The difference between how higher and lower BMI affects fertility in women versus men Why eating "real food" matters more than following restrictive fad diets Exercise guidelines during IUI, IVF, egg freezing, embryo transfer, and early pregnancy The truth about BMI goals and why Dr. Provost doesn't restrict treatment based on weight alone How to create sustainable lifestyle changes with accountability partners Why you shouldn't eliminate all the healthy coping mechanisms (like exercise) when trying to conceive Resources: Indiana Fertility Institute: fertilityindy.com Dr. Meredith Provost on Instagram: @meredithprovostmd "The Obesity Code" by Dr. Jason Fung (mentioned for intermittent fasting information) Online BMI calculators for tracking body mass index Do you have questions about IVF? Last year in the United States a baby was born every 8 seconds. That's roughly 3.8 Million babies born last year alone! You don't have to be a fertility doctor to know what that means. Millions of people just like you were trying to conceive. Research tells us that most couples conceive within six cycles of timed intercourse, but many others (roughly 10% of couples) are struggling with fertility. Here's the funny thing about what I do. I want to teach you how NOT to be my patient. Of course, there are exceptions to that statement. But in general, I'd much prefer to share with you what I've learned about preparing for pregnancy in hopes that it makes your journey to parenthood easier. In this episode, I'm breaking down something that should be simple but often isn't: how to plan your fertility future. You don't need to be a fertility specialist or have a science degree to understand the basics of fertility planning. I want everyone to approach this the same way you'd plan a vacation: with intention, research, and realistic expectations. The most important thing I want you to know? Humans ovulate just one egg per month, and that egg only has about a 15% chance of being genetically healthy, even in our twenties. This fundamental truth changes everything about how we should approach family planning. Throughout this episode, I share my three-rule framework that I live by: What do I want? What is it going to take to get what I want? And am I willing to do it? When applied to fertility, these questions help you get concrete and honest about your timeline, your options, and the steps you need to take now to avoid struggle later. I explain why fertility treatment is really about "egg rescue" - saving eggs from being lost forever - and why planning your fertility deserves at least as much attention as planning that dream vacation to the Maldives. In this episode, we cover: Understanding that we ovulate only one egg per month with a 15% chance of genetic viability at best The reality of conception timelines: why it can take 6-12 months for healthy couples to conceive Miscarriage statistics and why 20-30% of pregnancies end in the first trimester through no fault of your own The three-question framework for planning your fertility future: what you want, what it takes, and your willingness to act How egg freezing works as "IVF without the F" and why it's about rescuing eggs, not depleting them Age-related fertility decline: why your chances at 41 (10% viable eggs) are dramatically different than in your twenties Preparing for pregnancy like you'd prepare for a vacation: getting medically ready, addressing health issues, and genetic carrier screening Do you have questions about IVF? In this episode, I dive into one of the most important aspects of the fertility journey: support. Whether you're going through treatment yourself or you're a friend or family member wanting to help someone you love, this episode is packed with practical advice on how to navigate this emotionally challenging time. I discuss how to break the ice with loved ones about what kind of support you actually need, how to create a safety bubble around your journey, and why it's crucial to celebrate every small win along the way. For those supporting someone through fertility treatment, I offer guidance on asking the right questions, being present without fixing, and understanding that sometimes the best gift you can give is simply space and unconditional love. Would you like to learn how to get pregnant, The Egg Whisperer Way? What you learn from this show has the potential to change your life forever. Ask yourself: 1. What do I want? Be specific. example: I'm 32 years old and I want to have a baby. I want to do it naturally. 2. What is it going to take to get what I want? example: It's going to take knowing my fertility diagnosis first (enter the TUSHY Method), having a healthy lifestyle, taking prenatal vitamins, getting preconception tests done, and having sex. 3. Am I willing to do what it takes to get what I want? If you're not willing to do the things to get what you want, then you have to change #1. If at 37 someone says they want three kids and then I ask them what it's going to take to get what they want. Some people know what it will take. Others may not. Want to learn more?
