Planning Your Fertility Future: Understanding Your Fertility (Plus Egg Freezing and IVF)

The Egg Whisperer Show

In this episode, I'm breaking down something that should be simple but often isn't: how to plan your fertility future. You don't need to be a fertility specialist or have a science degree to understand the basics of fertility planning. I want everyone to approach this the same way you'd plan a vacation: with intention, research, and realistic expectations. The most important thing I want you to know? Humans ovulate just one egg per month, and that egg only has about a 15% chance of being genetically healthy, even in our twenties. This fundamental truth changes everything about how we should approach family planning. Throughout this episode, I share my three-rule framework that I live by:  What do I want?  What is it going to take to get what I want?  And am I willing to do it?  When applied to fertility, these questions help you get concrete and honest about your timeline, your options, and the steps you need to take now to avoid struggle later. I explain why fertility treatment is really about "egg rescue" - saving eggs from being lost forever - and why planning your fertility deserves at least as much attention as planning that dream vacation to the Maldives. In this episode, we cover: Understanding that we ovulate only one egg per month with a 15% chance of genetic viability at best The reality of conception timelines: why it can take 6-12 months for healthy couples to conceive Miscarriage statistics and why 20-30% of pregnancies end in the first trimester through no fault of your own The three-question framework for planning your fertility future: what you want, what it takes, and your willingness to act How egg freezing works as "IVF without the F" and why it's about rescuing eggs, not depleting them Age-related fertility decline: why your chances at 41 (10% viable eggs) are dramatically different than in your twenties Preparing for pregnancy like you'd prepare for a vacation: getting medically ready, addressing health issues, and genetic carrier screening Do you have questions about IVF? Click here to join Dr. Aimee for The IVF Class. Your Genetics are a key part of my TUSHY Method (Y = Your genetics) and I'm so honored to have Dena Goldberg (also known far and wide as Dena DNA) joining me today! Some of the questions I know you have on your mind about genetics are: Nothing came back on my 23 & Me test. I'm good to go, right? Answer: Not so fast. 23&Me relies on "SNP testing," and only looks at "very specific bookmarks on very random genes." You'll want a more thorough test for preconception screening. I don't have any history of disease in my family. Do I need to do genetic testing? Answer: It's a good idea. There are syndromes such as Lynch Syndrome that are asymptomatic in 90% of people who are carriers. You'll want to know if you have those genetic markers before passing them on to your embryo and child. Can you make sure my embryo doesn't have autism? Answer: Autism is actually a description of a constellation of symptoms. So it's not an underlying condition in and of itself. There are hundreds to thousands of genetic causes to autism. I'm excited to share this episode, where I joined Dr. Kirti Patel to talk all about egg freezing on The Gynarchy Podcast. We discuss why egg freezing matters, how it works, and what every woman should know about her fertility options. As a fertility specialist with deep roots in women's health (and a family legacy in OB/GYN), I'm passionate about empowering women with the knowledge and choices they deserve. In this conversation, I share my personal journey, the inspiration behind my work, and why I believe education is the key to reproductive autonomy. During our interview, Dr. Patel and I dive into the evolving landscape of egg freezing, the cultural and societal factors influencing women's choices, and the realities (both medical and emotional) of fertility preservation. We discuss the science, the misconceptions, and the importance of making informed decisions, whether you're considering egg freezing for yourself or just want to better understand your reproductive health. My goal is to demystify the process and help women feel confident, not fearful, about their options. In this episode, we cover: My personal and professional journey into fertility medicine, including generational influences and early experiences in my father's practice The origins and evolution of "egg freezing parties" and how they've become a platform for education and empowerment The step-by-step process of egg freezing, including preparation, testing, and what to expect physically and emotionally Common side effects, risks, and the psychological impact of fertility treatments The role of genetics, age, and lifestyle in fertility planning, and how to personalize your approach Debunking myths: egg freezing as an "insurance policy," who should consider it, and the realities of success rates The intersection of workplace benefits, societal pressures, and reproductive rights in the context of fertility care Resources: Dr. Kirti Patel's website and The Gynarchy podcast (go subscribe!)  My website: draimee.org and IVF classes: eggwhispererschool.com The Egg Whisperer Show on YouTube and Spotify Social media: @eggwhisperer on Instagram and TikTok American Society for Reproductive Medicine: asrm.org (for referenced studies) Do you have questions about IVF?Click here to join Dr. Aimee for The IVF Class. As you'll hear her say, "For anyone who's listening, who might be having a little bit of a hard time with their emotional and psychological health: you're not alone. This is really common. Is your pregnancy test negative, again? Let's get real. It sucks when we do everything we can in our power to make something happen, and it just doesn't. If you've ever wanted to get pregnant, and have seen a negative result on the test, you know exactly what I'm talking about. It doesn't matter if it's one month of trying or 2 years…. "Trying to get pregnant" can be painful, and the phrase itself is defeatist. The mindset it establishes is one based on fear vs. love. I like to lead from a place of love, and encourage my patients to think positively. For that reason, I advocate for replacing it with, "preparing for pregnancy." Doesn't it just sound more peaceful, and open to the process? I think so. Regardless if you are on board with my line of thinking, I do want to share some helpful tips and suggestions so that your path to pregnancy is as informed and efficient as possible. Here are my top tips: My #1 tip for preparing for pregnancy is to NOT put blind faith in fertility apps. Tip #2: Develop a resilient, and positive mindset. Tip #3: Make use of science (diagnostic testing) to understand what could be preventing you from getting pregnant. Oh, and ask questions. Lots of them! Tip #4: Talk to your doctor about things you can do that are in your control like lifestyle and diet. Read the full show notes on Dr. Aimee's website. Today we're talking about treating Endometriosis - related infertility.  Here are some facts about Endometriosis as shared by Dr. Sher:  - Endometriosis is a condition where cells similar to the lining of the uterus (endometrium) grow outside of the uterus, in the pelvic cavity.   - It occurs in about 10% of all women and can be symptom free or may cause a wide spectrum of symptoms.   - It's estimated that 25% - 40% of all female infertility is linked to endometriosis in some way.   - Endometriosis is a life-long condition. It cannot be completely removed or cured. While endometriosis can usually be controlled (medically or surgically), the condition itself is not curable.  - Removing endometriomas from an ovary may help with getting pregnant. Dr. Sher is also sharing information about how the endometrium begins to grow outside the uterus, and why some women remain asymptomatic, and others develop symptoms.  Read the full transcript and get more information on the website. We're diving deep into the science of NAD+ - what it is, why it matters for fertility, and how it might help improve egg quality and outcomes for those pursuing IVF or egg freezing. Dr. Ratner, a board certified urologist, brings a wealth of expertise in nutritional supplements and reproductive health, and I've been looking forward to sharing this conversation with you. Throughout our interview, we explore the fascinating roles of NAD+ and sirtuins in ovarian health, discuss the latest research (from mice to humans!), and break down what these findings could mean for anyone hoping to preserve or boost their fertility. We also touch on practical strategies, from supplements to lifestyle changes, and address common questions about safety, effectiveness, and the future of this exciting area of reproductive science. In this episode, we cover: What NAD+ is and why it's crucial for egg health and fertility The role of sirtuins as "master regulators" in our cells and their connection to ovarian reserve How age-related declines in NAD+ and sirtuins impact egg quality Insights from animal and human studies on NAD+ supplementation and fertility outcomes The difference between NAD+ supplements and precursors like nicotinamide riboside Dietary and lifestyle approaches to boosting NAD+ (and why caloric restriction isn't for everyone) The growing awareness among fertility specialists and what's next for research in this field Resources Get OvaNAD+ from Theralogix at their website (use the code EGG for a 15% discount) Join The IVF Class Find Dr. Aimee's Fertility Essentials & Supplements   Do you have questions about IVF?Click here to join Dr. Aimee for The IVF Class.
