And the number is 30 - 30 different plants per week." - Dr. Will BulsiewiczDr. Will Bulsiewicz reveals the startling truth about our modern diet - 75% of supermarket calories come from just wheat, corn, and soy. Drawing from groundbreaking research in the American Gut Project, he explains why plant diversity is the single most important factor for gut health, with 30 different plant foods weekly being the magic number. From smoothies packed with varied seeds and berries to reimagined pasta sauces filled with herbs and vegetables, Dr. Bulsiewicz offers practical ways to transform your nutrition beyond the standard American diet where only 10% of calories come from plants.Beyond simply adding more fiber, Dr. Bulsiewicz explains the fascinating science behind why diversity matters - each plant feeds different families of gut microbes, which have unique "taste buds" and food preferences. By expanding your plant repertoire, you'll not only nourish more beneficial gut bacteria but also experience greater satiety, reducing hunger and cravings. This revolutionary approach to eating challenges us to be intentional about our food choices, prioritizing variety alongside whole, unprocessed ingredients for optimal gut health and overall wellbeing.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter: http://www.greatness.com/newsletter

Will Bulsiewicz went to school for 14 years to become a gastroenterologist. He loved working with patients, and developed a fascination for emerging research about the gut microbiome -- trillions of bacteria that live in our intestines and digest fruits and veggies. As a young doctor, he realized that public perception of the gut microbiome was lacking. When he gave a talk about colon microbes at his hospital, the intimate event became a standing-room only fire code violation. That's when he knew the world was hungry for more information, and the Internet was calling. Appearing on some of the world's most popular and respected health podcasts, Dr. B rocketed from a practicing clinician to a leading advocate for gut health -- especially on Instagram. While he could treat a handful of patients in private practice, he was helping millions as a science communicator online. When working 9-5, writing books, creating content, appearing on podcasts, and being a dad became too much, he made the tough decision to leave clinical work behind and become a full-time influencer. This week on INFLUENCE, Dr. Bulsiewicz sits down with Matt to discuss the fascinating microscopic creatures in our colons that we can't live without, why our modern diets starve them of essential nutrients, the advice his wife gave him that changed the course of his career, what to look for when parsing medical information online, and some disgusting trivia about cow intestines. Are seed oils healthy?   The truth lies in the research. Dr. Roxie Becker does a deep dive into the data surrounding the controversial cooking oils. In a conversation with "The Weight Loss Champion" Chuck Carroll, Dr. Becker highlights misinformation surrounding seed oils, particularly the claim that they are inflammatory. Critics often reference a systematic review showing no significant difference in arachidonic acid levels in the body, regardless of linoleic acid intake.   However, Dr. Becker also emphasizes that seed oils should not be the primary focus of a diet due to their high fat and caloric values, both of which contribute to obesity.   The interview concludes with personal anecdotes about their vegan diets and health outcomes, underscoring the importance of evidence-based nutrition.   In This Interview   - Seed oils vs non-seed oils - Inflammatory seed oil science - Least healthy seeds oils - Does heating the oil make it worse? - Fat from seed oils vs. fat from animal sources - Fat sources, cholesterol and heart disease   — — SHOW LINKS — — Join Chuck and Dr. Will Bulsiewicz in Miami https://www.pcrm.org/events/bon-voyage-party-2025 — — — Studies Referenced Increasing linoleic acid in the diet doesn't change the amount of linoleic acid in the body https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3132704/#sec9 Increasing linoleic acid did not increase markers of inflammation https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28752873/ Cooking with peanut oil or corn oil did not increase markers of inflammation https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32756661/ Flaxseed oil did not increase markers of inflammation https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26959052/ Canola oil did not increase markers of inflammation https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33127255/ Sunflower oil may lower markers of inflammation compared with butter https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21430255/ Sesame seed oil may lower markers of inflammation compared to a control oil https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3683238/ Soybean oil did not increase markers of inflammation https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22031659/ Safflower oil did not increase markers of inflammation https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/12818406/ Minnesota Coronary Experiment https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4836695/ American Heart Association core 4 trials on unsaturated fat vs saturated fat https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/cir.0000000000000510   — — —   Free Athlete Nutrition E-Book https://www.pcrm.org/athlete — — BECOME AN EXAM ROOM VIP — — https://www.pcrm.org/examroomvip — — THIS IS US — — The Exam Room Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theexamroompodcast — — — Chuck Carroll Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ChuckCarrollWLC Facebook: http://wghtloss.cc/ChuckFacebook X: https://www.twitter.com/ChuckCarrollWLC — — — Physicians Committee Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/physicianscommittee Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PCRM.org X: https://www.twitter.com/pcrm YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/PCRM Jobs: https://www.pcrm.org/careers — — SUBSCRIBE & SHARE — — 5-Star Success: Share Your Story Apple: https://apple.co/2JXBkpy Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2pMLoY3 Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or many other podcast providers. A cardiologist reveals how to lower cholesterol naturally.   Dr. Steve Lome joins Chuck Carroll on The Exam Room Podcast.   Key points discussed include:   Prevalence of high cholesterol: Dr. Lome emphasizes that high cholesterol is a significant issue, often unnoticed by those affected. He notes that while genetics can play a role, lifestyle choices are the primary contributors to high cholesterol levels.   Dietary impact: The discussion highlights the importance of a whole food, plant-based, low-fat diet in managing cholesterol levels. Dr. Lome shares anecdotes of patients who have dramatically lowered their LDL cholesterol through dietary changes, often within a month.   Genetic component: Dr. Lome addresses the misconception that high cholesterol is purely genetic, stating that only a small percentage of the population (0.2%) has a genetic condition that prevents them from lowering cholesterol through diet.   Saturated and trans fats: The conversation covers the impact of saturated and trans fats on cholesterol levels, with a particular focus on dairy products as a major source of saturated fat in the American diet.   Statins: Dr. Lome discusses the limitations of statins in treating high cholesterol, arguing that dietary changes are more effective in addressing the root causes of heart disease, which include inflammation and arterial damage.   Join Chuck and Dr. Will Bulsiewicz at Dr. Barnard's Bon Voyage Bash in Miami on March 7!   — — SHOW LINKS — — Dr. Steve Lome YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@DrStevenLome IG: https://www.instagram.com/stevenlome Web: https://www.PBNM.org — — EVENTS — — Dr. Bulsiewicz and Chuck in Miami Where: Dr. Barnard's Bon Voyage Bash Date: March 7, 2025 https://www.pcrm.org/events/bon-voyage-party-2025 — — — Free Athlete Nutrition E-Book https://www.pcrm.org/athlete — — BECOME AN EXAM ROOM VIP — — https://www.pcrm.org/examroomvip — — THIS IS US — — The Exam Room Podcast Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/theexamroompodcast — — — Chuck Carroll Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ChuckCarrollWLC Facebook: http://wghtloss.cc/ChuckFacebook X: https://www.twitter.com/ChuckCarrollWLC — — — Physicians Committee Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/physicianscommittee Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PCRM.org X: https://www.twitter.com/pcrm YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/PCRM Jobs: https://www.pcrm.org/careers — — SUBSCRIBE & SHARE — — 5-Star Success: Share Your Story Apple: https://apple.co/2JXBkpy Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2pMLoY3 Please subscribe and give the show a 5-star rating on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or many other podcast providers. Fiber is often overlooked in discussions about diet, weight loss, and immunity, but it shouldn't be. Fiber is essential for digestive health, improving gut motility, and regulating bowel movements. It's also key for weight management, as high-fiber foods are more filling. Research shows that fiber can reduce LDL cholesterol, potentially lowering the risk of heart disease. Additionally, fiber lowers the glycemic load of foods, helping to prevent metabolic syndrome and related conditions. Fiber also plays a crucial role in microbiome health, acting as a prebiotic to support the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, which positively impacts immune function, mental health, and more. The issue? Most of us don't eat enough fiber or a wide variety of plants. My guest on this podcast is a gastroenterologist who literally wrote the book on fiber and will share his insights on how to heal your gut. Listen and learn: About fiber, resistant starch, and polyphenols as prebiotics Why you should aim to eat 30 plant foods weekly The importance of colorful plant foods How fiber transforms into anti-inflammatory short chain fats in your gut The reward vs. risks of fecal transplants Links: Will's site ABOUT OUR GUEST Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, MD, MSCI, is a board-certified gastroenterologist, gut health expert, and New York Times bestselling author of Fiber Fueled.
